You are bidding on a rare 1951 MGTD “C” roadster. There were only about 1,700 total “C” TDs produced during the run of about 30,000 total MGTDs. The “C” (competition) model came from the factory with a whopping 5 to 6 HP more than the standard MGTD, due to some modifications at the factory. This car has been in storage about 40 years. The previous owner bought the car in 1966. It still has the dual fuel pumps, Andrex shock absorbers, original larger air cleaner, bulge in the right side of the hood for the larger intake manifold, etc. It does not appear to have ever been molested. The engine is the original, matching numbers one that came with the car from the factory. (See picture of VIN tag and engine tag.) Rust does not appear to be a problem with this car. The only rust hole I could find was in the bottom of the battery box. Some of the wood that is visible will need attention, such as where the top attaches in the back. If this were a standard MGTD, it would probably sell for around $4,000 less than my “Buy It Now” price. If you’re looking for an MGTD to restore, it makes more sense to pay the extra $4,000 for a rare one because you’ll more than make up this cost if you decide to sell it once it’s restored. I expect payment within 5 days of the end of the auction. The car can be picked up after your check has cleared my bank. Shipping is the responsibility of the buyer, but I can give the name of a good, reliable shipper if you wish. Buyer will be given a Bill of Sale and the Florida Title I received when I bought the car. If you have any questions, you can use the “Ask Seller A Question” box, or call me at (912) 222-5771 between 9 AM and 9 PM, Eastern time.

Evolution was slow at Morris Garage, but there's a reason why cars like this 1953 TD were brought home by the hundreds by GIs returning from Europe, and why they remain wildly popular today. 1953 was also the final year of the TD, and for many enthusiasts, the separate headlights and fenders define the vintage MG look. The look is pure pre-war, with separate fenders and a long hood, but the energetic handling and performance were quite contemporary. This MG was completely and expertly restored in 2008, but it wasn't over-restored to the point where you're afraid to drive it, which misses the point entirely. The body construction was traditional, but that also means that it's light and easy to repair, and this one shows no signs of serious damage or the MG's arch-nemesis, rust. Hood and door fit are quite good, and the creamy English White paint is a very authentic-looking finish that's neither too shiny nor full of metallic, both of which are instant giveaways to incorrect choices. It shows only a few light signs of use, of course, but the overall presentation is what endears MGs to their legions of fans. Of course, things like the chrome grille, stand-alone headlights, and simple bumpers give it an old-fashioned look, and they're all in excellent shape. Inside the diminutive cabin, there's adequate room for two, and once you settle into the low-slung bucket seats and assume the proper driving position, you'll find it's easy to spend hours behind the wheel without fatigue. Well, maybe your cheeks will be hurting from grinning so much, but the driving experience is involving without being exhausting. The leather seats have been properly reupholstered in pleated tan leather, which matches the door panels that offer useful storage pockets. The lovely dashboard is genuine wood, not a veneer, and houses a full array of Jaeger instruments that have been fully restored and sparkle with a truly British look. The three spoke steering wheel is still the universal symbol for sports car, and has been completely restored to a high level like the rest of the interior. And since MG lovers are serious about their cars, this one offers a matching tan canvas convertible top as weather protection, which quickly separates the men from the boys, although it does include a full set of side curtains for truly inclement weather. The whole point of an MG isn't brute power, but they're plenty peppy with the 1250cc inline-four, and it has a wonderful baritone exhaust note that's half the experience. It was rebuilt during the 2008 restoration and this one really is a wonderful runner, firing up easily through dual side-draft carburetors with chrome air cleaners. The whole engine is scarcely bigger than a briefcase, but all the parts are easy to get at and maintain, which is why MGs are so beloved today. The engine's linked to a slick-shifting 4-speed manual transmission whose light action and progressive clutch are the cornerstone of performance driving and make it a joy to run at 8/10s. The chassis is a simple ladder frame, and as I mentioned before, there's zero rust or rot underneath, just a neatly detailed undercarriage that shows how thorough that restoration really was, because it's very, very clean. Stock steel wheels with chrome hubcaps look right and wear appropriately tall 165R15 radial tires. One drive and you'll see why it's so easy to love an MG, and this TD delivers that old-world fun with the benefits of a quality restoration behind it. 1952 MG TD/C MARK II ROADSTER, COMPETITION MODEL Car No. TD/C 17174 EXL/NA Body No. 16522 / 88730 Engine No. XPAG/TD3/17424 Body Type. 22381 Original Mileage: 24,588 Our TD/C is a numbers-matching example. THIS IS A VERY RARE CAR. 1,710 TDC Models were produced out of a production run of 29,664 MGTDs. Approximately 5% of total production. As a result of the demand for a car with the MG TD's classic look, but with better handling characteristics and more power, MG built a limited number of TD/C's, the "C" standing for competition. An additional set of Andrex friction dampers were added to the shock absorbers of the car which was additionally equipped with twin fuel pumps, larger twin (13/4") carburetors, larger intake and exhaust valves, stronger valve springs, larger oil sump and other mechanical modifications. This car has the original radio which was installed in the glove box as a special option. Also, has an extremely rare, day-night rear view mirror flip up option. Optional heater unit installed. Windwings, Tonneau cover, Luggage rack, Excellent top and side curtains. It has always been parked in a climate-controlled garage, at the residence, and covered for over 30 years !!! Low original mileage. Southern car that looks like it did when it ran in mid-fifties. Wonderful patina. The car will need body work and paint, if you desire.. Motor turns freely, but does not currently start. Being 70 years old myself, I prefer to sell the car as a project however, if not sold, I will have it restored. It would be difficult to find a more original low mileage example to restore. Price is set below NADA book value. This vehicle is being sold as a restoration project. Car is registered, and insured in the state of Georgia. Sold with Bill of Sale only. Overseas buyers welcome. Seller assists with coordination of shipping from Charleston, S.C. to your nearest port.
