This is the 560SL you have been looking for! Ultra low 28,256 actual documented 2 owner miles. The first owner was a Microsoft executive who purchased the car for his wife on the West Coast. The second owner is a dear friend and fellow Mercedes collector who asked me to list the car for him insofar is he is not the most computer savvy guy and isn't much of a talker. The car is a impeccable example of a no paint work (Mils 3.5) no stories car. Signal red over black with perfect burlwood veneers, a crack free dash and basically a car that looks and drives like brand new, as it should with 28k miles on it. My friend bought the car years ago and stored it on stands and drove it about 100 miles a year. The original Pirelli tires are included but not safe to drive on anymore. All original glass, perfect original soft top and hard top. The car is leak free and goes to Mercedes for a check up every year. The car is leak free and tight! Most of the original stickers are on suspension components. The wheels have no curb rash and this is most likely the finest kept SL at any mileage. This car was bought as a perfect car, maintained to those standards throughout the years. Included is the window sticker, maintenance log, tool kit, hang tags, supporting maintenance records. The 3.0-liter straight-eight powering the Mercedes-Benz 300SLR that Stirling Moss famously drove to victory in the 1955 Mille Miglia produced 302 horsepower. At its 7500-rpm peak, the great sports-racing car topped out at 179 mph. Fast forward to 2002. AMG, Mercedes' performance arm, has waved its hot-rod wand over the SL500 to create a unique combination of supercar performance and hedonistic comfort. The SL55 AMG is fast, and 55 percent more powerful than the SL. How fast? There's no simple answer. Officially, the 469-hp supercharged SL55 is electronically limited to 155 mph. But AMG buyers don't spend in the neighborhood of $115,500 to sit in a 155-mph autobahn train and be overtaken by every 911 on the hunt. It seems most European customers (and a small number of Americans) have the restrictor removed. Unrestrained, Mercedes reports the SL55 AMG can run to an intoxicating 208 mph—on the Papenburg proving ground, of course. The problem is tires. No road tires exist for these speeds in a 4400-pound car, so even the "unlimited" SL55 is constrained to 186 mph. That's fast enough to humble a new 3.6-liter Porsche 911, if not quite the 192-mph Turbo. Without diminishing the "regular" SL's incredible refinement and comfort, the SL55 overlays a level of performance that raises it to the status of true supercar capability. Mercedes' claimed 4.6-second blast to 60 mph—a staggering 1.5 seconds faster than the SL500—can't convey the difference in acceleration, or character, between the two sports cars. The SL55 AMG feels dramatically quicker, as the anticipated numbers indicate. In the 15 seconds it should take the SL55 to reach 125 mph, the SL500 would be at 105 mph. Nor do they sound alike. Whereas the SL delivers a cultured burble, the SL55's exhaust note is offshore-power-boat racer, the V-8 throb muted on a constant throttle, gloriously assertive when the engine delivers. The secret, achieved by an IHI belt-driven screw supercharger that spins at 23,000 rpm to a maximum pressure of 11.6 psi, is mountains of torque. At a meager 1500 rpm, the SL55 delivers 369 pound-feet, already 30 pound-feet above the SL500's peak. At only 2000 rpm, 479 pound-feet are on tap. It achieves a peak 516 pound-feet across a plateau from 2650 rpm to 4500. To cope with the torque, AMG exchanged the SL's aluminum alloy rear subframe for one made of steel, a major contributor (a hair less than 88 pounds) to a 243-pound weight increase. This is instant performance gratification, the breed of responsive, accessible power that, working smoothly with the five-speed automatic transmission, endows the SL55 with instantaneous, horizon-catching acceleration. Mercedes' ESP stability control keeps it in check to the accompaniment of a flashing warning light. Switch off ESP so there's no reduction in engine power when a rear wheel loses traction, and tire-smoking starts are only a throttle tickle away. Yet even on damp roads the SL55 has massive traction. On the fast, open roads north of Seville in Spain, where AMG held the launch, reigning in the 5.4-liter V-8's 469 horses took more control than we could muster. Inevitably, we arrived at corners up to 50 mph faster than expected, the coupelike refinement making driver and passenger largely unaware of the SL55's rapid progress. Roof-down cruising at 100 mph is also effortless and largely turbulent-free. The V-8 shares the same capacity as the naturally aspirated engine fitted to the E55, the CLK55, et al., but AMG's engineers have thoroughly upgraded the engine to cope with the increased power. The crankcase, the crankshaft, and the pistons are more durable, oil pressure is increased, and the cylinder heads have been modified to accept the greater airflow. The camshafts produce longer valve-opening times to take advantage of the force-feeding. The transmission shares the same ratios and final drive as the standard SL, but for the first time, a Mercedes has paddle-style gearchanging devices on the steering wheel, in a new manual mode. Changing gears via the small buttons behind the upper steering-wheel spokes—left for downshift, right for upshift—is swift and fun for a time, but because the manual program eliminates any form of throttle-induced kickdown, it quickly becomes apparent that the adaptive gearbox works more effectively when left to think for itself, changing up at 6500 rpm at full acceleration. Apart from firming up the dampers by 5 to 10 percent (depending on road speed), the SL55's suspension is unchanged, the magic of Active Body Control delivering a compliant ride and, if it senses the driver prefers corner action to straight-line speed, switching over to tauter suspension settings that bring flat cornering and brilliant body control. Because the steering is integrated into the computer-controlled ABC, it's quicker in the first movements away from straight ahead. It's only in tight second- or third-gear twisties that the driver becomes aware that not even ABC can disguise the SL55's bulk. To the by-wire brake technology introduced on the SL, AMG adds huge 14.2-inch front disc brakes with eight-piston calipers fitted with four pads—almost twice the pad surface offered on the standard SL—and 13-inch rear discs. Both are cross-drilled and vented. The brakes are brilliant. Visually, the SL55 gets the usual AMG go-faster bits. There's a deeper front spoiler with three intakes instead of one, side skirts, four potent-looking oval exhaust pipes, and prominent "V8 Kompressor" badges on the flanks. Inside, the changes are subtle. There's added bolstering to improve lateral support on the excellent seats; Alcantara trim covers the instrument hood; there's aluminum decoration on the dashboard and door panels, and the gauges have red needles on a silver background. Before AMG launched the SL55 at last September's Frankfurt show, 1800 cars were going to be built in 2002. Publicity doubled this, and the number has leaped to 4000, with U.S. deliveries getting under way this fall. This is one hell of a car, almost too perfect in its ability to combine true supercar performance with hedonistic levels of comfort and refinement. Progress. 1986 Mercedes-Benz 560SL Roadster Very Rare AMG Aero Body Package Rear Seating 11/85 MFG Date VIN: WDBBA48D6GA041207 Rare Smoke Silver Metallic (Code 702) Exterior Light Brown / Java Leather (Code 274) Interior Brown canvas convertible top along with Smoke Silver Metallic Hardtop Just under 93,000 Miles I am selling a 1986 Mercedes 560SL roadster for my Dad. He purchased this vehicle only a bit ago as an investment as values on the R107 have just begun to really move and will continue to do so over the coming years. Our plan was to put a little time an effort into it to make it in tip-top shape and enjoy it however money has gotten a little tight, so this toy has to go. I would consider this 560SL to be in-between conditions 3 and 4 based on Haggerty Auto value descriptions. This R107 560SL in uncommon, distinctive and desirable colors was first sold at a Mercedes-Benz dealership in Arizona and resided with its first owner there till 1990. In 1991 the vehicle made its way to California to meet its second owner which maintained and drove it till 2005. The vehicle was then purchased by an elderly gentleman and shipped to Illinois where it was only driven on the nicest of weekends during the summer. He drove it sparingly. With less than 93,000 miles, it has been driven an average of 3,175 miles a year. It has been garage-kept and decently-maintained. The paint and chrome are quite presentable and there is no rust. This is a major plus when looking at R107 chassis cars as rust is very problematic. The brown canvas top is in nice shape with only one small patch on the driver’s side. The glass is free of cracks, chips and scratches. The java interior is in very good condition. The dash has no cracks however the carpets show some wear. The vehicle comes with the original owner’s manual and roof latch tool. The car is equipped with the optional external thermometer as well. A few major rarities on this particular vehicle are the AMG Aero Package which is very seldom seen as well as the rear roadster seating. The AMG Aero Package includes the front air dam, side skirts, rear spoiler and rear valance along with the prestigious vintage AMG badge on the rear deck lid. You will also notice that the car was manufactured in 11/85; There we’re only 3,907 1986 560SLs produced during 1985 making this a very early R107. 1985 Manufactured cars are the rarest of the bunch as production numbers were the lowest of any year offered. The car drives well, as straight, smooth and strong as an SL should. It really is quite quick and it seems abnormally strong for a 560SL.
