Now that the W113 230/250/280SL's have become priced out of sight, here comes the 560SL. As recently as the mid 1990's, and early 2000’s you could pick up a nice condition 1971 280SL Pagoda Roadster for around $20,000. Almost in the blink of an eye, that's what a basket case now goes for - with good condition examples regularly selling north of $75k and more. There are good reasons for this: scarcity, limited production, and a demographic generational shift that shows the 50's and 60's muscle car prices have peaked and the next generation is after the desirable cars they remember - which mostly came from Germany in the 70's, 80's and early 1990's. In the 560SL, Mercedes got it all just right, offering essentially bullet-proof reliability, satisfying power, and aggressive good looks. The 560SL combined all that Mercedes learned about the V-8 W107 chassis cars into a cultural icon that quietly and confidently told the world its occupants had "arrived." Simplicity, superb build quality, and an enduring design are all hallmarks of the Mercedes 560SL. The 560SL was the culmination in the United States of what Mercedes-Benz internally referred to as the R107 chassis, a model run that lasted for 18 years, beginning in 1972 with the US introduction of the 350SL. The R107 chassis was one of the longest running production bodies in the Diamler-Benz AG's line, and R107s are extremely well built and collectable. It is also the first V8 powered two-seater to be built at the Stuttgart, Germany factory. Before it was parked into the storage, it was used as a daily driver. Engine starts up, and the car runs, but before any serious driving is done, tune up, fresh fluids, and going through things is in order. (Please see the video of engine starting up and running below!!!) This beauty came in a very rare and elegant Pearl Gray Metallic paint (color code #122 perlmattgrau) over gray leather interior!! Fresh repaint would make this car look stunning again, as paint is showing its age, and it is oxidized on the rear end of the car (trunk, top of the doors and rear fenders). Body is nice and solid, as well as the undercarriage, which is all original, and unmolested and most importantly it is rust free!! This was Florida car its whole life, explaining its Rust Free condition! Original Interior is all there and for 28 year old car, it’s in pretty good condition and its nicely presentable. Original seats are in good condition, and are covered with the Sheep Skin Covers…Leather shows some signs of age and wear, but structurally seats are supportive and comfortable. This SL comes with both Hard Top and Soft top. Hard top is in pretty good condition, and all glass is nice and complete. Soft top looks good, and canvas is still in good useable condition. All 4 matching Michelin tires are in excellent condition with plenty of tread left. Original books and manuals, including the original window sticker, and original DATA card are all present!!! It is a showcase for Mercedes' electronic brake system, active body control suspension and vehicle stability programs. The good thing about all the gadgetry is that it blends into the vehicle so seamlessly in daily driving that all you notice is uncommon competence in situations that might otherwise seem a bit dodgy. This is the fifth generation sports car. Its styling is sleek yet muscular, with a four-headlight face that is recognizably a Mercedes. Like a chameleon, it turns from hardtop to convertible in 16 seconds as the roof folds into the trunk. The innovative brake-by-wire system uses a computer to activate a valve at each wheel, and the system senses how hard the driver wants to brake. If you brake in a turn, the system applies more braking to the wheel on the outside and less to the inside to help maintain vehicle stability. Brake Assist detects a panic stop and applies the brakes with full force. A traditional hydraulic master cylinder is available as a backup. Mercedes uses an active suspension system that reduces body lean while providing a dynamic compromise between a soft ride and responsive handling. Called Active Body Control, the system has sport and comfort settings. ABC adjusts the ride instantaneously and keeps the car level when taking a turn. Anti-lock brakes and traction control are also part of the ESP vehicle stability program that helps negate skids. One expects a luxury performance sports car of this price to cosset its occupants with convenience and comfort, and the SL does just that. Sensors in the seat-belt buckles let the climate control system know whether there is one or two occupants, and it adjusts accordingly. This vehicle is equipped with heated seats that also cool with fans that circulate cool air through the perforated leather. These seats have multi-contour seatbacks, adjustable side bolsters and a pulsing lumbar support to relieve the tension of long hours behind the wheel. Interior storage consists of small compartments under each seat and small bins behind the seat. It would be nice if these bins were lockable. Cup holders are unmarked and it took a trip to the manual to locate them. They are situated so spills would land on the stereo and navigation system. Safety items include head and thorax side-impact airbags, a driver's knee airbag and a roll bar that pops into place should the vehicle turn over. The tachometer and speedometer reside in large pods behind the steering wheel. Their graphics have been simplified, and night lighting is now in blue. The Command navigation and audio systems use an LCD. This particular vehicle is in EXCELLENT shape. Just look at the pictures and judge for yourself.
