Round #2! Come on, folks! This is no normal SLC...and I know you know it! I am selling a SUPER-RARE Euro model Mercedes Benz 280SLC hard-top coupe WITH A 4 SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION for under $2K!!! This car has significant rust in the floors which does not need to be "fatal". There are affordable replacement floor pan parts from companies like K&K Mfg. where you can get front and rear pans for left and right sides for $132.50 each! That means "better than original" floor pans for a tick over $500! This car WILL need new floors installed as well as some localized wheel-well patching. Did I mention how RARE this car is??!! Try to find another 280SLC with a 4 speed manual...besides the one in Hemming's right now that is listed at over $22,000! The engine starts and runs but it has an air valve that can cause some rough idling when cold. Once warmed-up, it idles nicely. The RARE 4 speed manual transmission is complete but it has a bad slave cylinder. The engine and transmission are COMPLETE. The car will be sold with OE 14" Bundt alloys wearing some "vintage" Michelin radials that will hold air and get you onto a trailer safely...but I wouldn't plan a long drive on them. This car has excellent glass (no chips or cracks!!). The stainless and chrome trim pieces (window trim, belt-line trim, rocker panel trim and bumpers) are COMPLETE and are in good shape with only the sides of the rear Euro bumper displaying a few cracks in the chrome finish with signs of rust peeking through. Head light trim is COMPLETE, crack free and in good condition. Front turn signal lights are COMPLETE, crack free and in good condition. Front fog lights are COMPLETE, with one cracked lens. Other is crack free and in good condition. Tail lights are COMPLETE, crack free and one of two (passenger side) shows minor discoloration in a localized spot. Other is in good condition. The spare tire well is solid and appears to be rust free. As you can see, this car has the sought-after small "Euro" bumpers which will fit both SL and SLC models. For crying out loud...the bumpers are worth $1,200-1,500!!! The gauge cluster is in very good shape reflecting 93,700 miles (believed to be actual, but no guarantee made) with all gauges (oil, temp, tach and speedometer) believed to be operating. All applicable dash knobs and pulls are present and in decent condition. The dash surface has one crack by the instrument cluster area. Dash wood (in center console area) displays cracks in finish. Glove box door operates as it should. Center console displays some fading but is in otherwise decent condition. All side windows (front and rear) are manual with cranks being complete and all function as expected. The seating surfaces are in very POOR condition as the euro cloth inserts have become brittle with age and have significant tears and cracks. Seat frames seem to be solid and will act as a good foundation to be recovered. The front seats tilt forward for rear seat access, as by design and the rear seat bottom cushion lifts out via the applicable release buttons. The First Aid Kit cover is intact and the rear shelf carpet is in need of being replaced due to fading. The easily removable sheet metal ( hood, truck lid, doors, fenders) is all in quite good condition. The front fenders and doors are in very good condition with only a small sign of paint bubbling on the passenger door (under the belt trim) and some bubbling near the headlight bucket on the driver side fender. The hood and trunk both appear to be in great condition with no significant dents and all badges present. The front grill is complete and presents well for a 37 year old car. Finished in White with Blue MB Tex, the car has both tops, and runs and drives very well. It features the legendary v8 and rugged Mercedez reliability. The SL Mercedez in arguably one of the finest cars ever made. From its inception in the 50's to today these cars have filled a niche at the top of the Mercedez line that will endure forever. They handle well, ride comfortably, and perform exceptionally well. These are cars that can go 100 MPH all day long! The third series model ran from 1973 to 1989 and are now starting to gain the attention of collectors-a low mile car recently sold at auction for over $100k so prices have started to escalate. These early examples without impact bumpers are very hard to find and are likely to be among the most desirable "Tank Roadsters" as the market matures. They exhibit the classic lines of the earlier cars while having a lot of very nice features that make them a lot more drivable. These cars are good for hundreds of thousands of miles and don't let those nay sayers fool you- sure parts aren't cheap but they rarely ever break! I have always been an Italian Car Collector and sort of poopooed the teutonic German Marques such as Mercedez and BMW, but my 3.0cs changed my mind about Bimmers and my SL is quite simply the best car I have ever had. (I have had a lot of cars) . This car has had a lot of recent upgrades and sensitive restoration performed, it is fully sorted mechanically and is cosmetically ready for any show one would wish to take it to. Books, tools, and extensive records accompany the car. The car features the Euro Headlights, another rare feature which really make the car look beautiful. Now is the time to buy one of these! All cars have an inverted bell curve of value and we are already on the upswing side of the curve on these little numbers! Its almost too late to get a good Pagoda reasonably, don't wait until these are out of range. After fierce debates, the Board of Management finally decided to produce the R 107 ( R for roadster ), as the 1971 SL was internally called, on June 18, 1968 . One of the crucial questions was whether the roadster should rather become a coupe with sunroof because alarming news concerning the safety – and type approval – of open-top cars had arrived from the USA : it was touch and go for them, and history has shown that they did, in the end, go. The Board's decision in favor of a roadster with removable hardtop was therefore a fundamental, future-oriented decision, entirely owing to the then Chief Engineer, Dr. Hans Scherenberg, who had vehemently fought for this concept. "The SL gave me a lot of pleasure, but also a lot of trouble. It was not an easy job," he summarized that memorable meeting at a later stage. Béla Barényi's safety concept with crumple zones front and rear and the rigid passenger cell – the three-box principle – was also incorporated in further developed quality in the 1971 SL. Unlike its predecessor, the R 107's backbone was not just a shortened and reinforced sedan floor but an independently designed frame/floor unit with an enclosed propeller shaft tunnel and box-shaped cross and side members, their special feature being different sheet metal gauges for deformation to a predefined pattern. The SL was to be designed by all means as an open-top car without a Targa bar for appearances' sake, so the only safety features for the roadster in the event of a rollover were the A-pillars with the windshield between them. So these pillars were newly developed from the ground up to acquire a strength that was 50 percent higher than in the predecessor. The windshield was bonded to the frame to increase strength. This provided for a remarkable level of resistance in the roof drop test – which meant that the open-top car acquired the safety experts' approval in the USA even without a Targa bar. It goes without saying that the rear screen in the hardtop was also bonded in. Ground-breaking innovations were also incorporated in the interior. The conventional – hard – dashboard was replaced by an ingeniously designed sheet metal construction: both the upper and knee-impact sections were foam-padded and yielded on impact. Another new feature was the four-spoke steering wheel, designed on the basis of the accident researchers' latest findings. Nevertheless, customers all over the world did not rush to the showrooms to order the new SL with safety in mind. They were attracted by the offer of a perfectly balanced open-top car – the only one of its kind built for years to come and attractive for that reason alone. Its distinctive front end with a dominant SL face, broad-band headlamps and ribbed turn signal lenses gave the car a powerful appearance; the low silhouette featured harmonious lines no matter whether the car was open, closed or fitted with its hardtop, and the slightly concave trunk lid was reminiscent of the Pagoda era. Ribbed, dirt-deflecting broad-band rear lights gave the rear end a strong, masculine touch. The "fastest" soft-top of all cabriolets and roadsters – a further refined design of the Pagoda version – was highly conducive to comfort and ease of operation: the process of opening or closing took a mere 30 seconds. As customary in SL roadsters by then, the soft-top vanished under a cover when folded down. From the start of production, the 1971 SL boasted the 3.5 liter eight-cylinder engine which had celebrated its premiere in the 280 SE 3.5 coupe and cabriolet in 1969 and had since been praised to the skies. Its 200 hp at 5800 rpm helped the SL – which weighed as much as 1600 kilograms – to accelerate from standstill to 100 km/h in nine seconds. Its top speed: 212 km/h. A number of detail features turned life in and with this car into a pleasurable experience. Right from the start, the seats were fitted with head restraints and seat belts. A highly responsive heating and novel air channeling in the area of the doors enhanced well-being and physiological safety. Dirt-deflecting moldings on the A-pillars and exterior mirrors enhanced visibility in poor weather. The windshield wipers, centrally arranged close to each other, swept a remarkable 70 percent of the windshield, were aerodynamically efficient and did not lift off at high speeds. It features the legendary v8 and rugged Mercedez reliability. The SL Mercedez in arguably one of the finest cars ever made. From its inception in the 50's to today these cars have filled a niche at the top of the Mercedez line that will endure forever. They handle well, ride comfortably, and perform exceptionally well. These are cars that can go 100 MPH all day long! The third series model ran from 1973 to 1989 and are now starting to gain the attention of collectors. They exhibit the classic lines of the earlier cars while having a lot of very nice features that make them a lot more drivable. These cars are good for hundreds of thousands of miles and don't let those nay sayers fool you- sure parts aren't cheap but they rarely ever break! Ihave always been an Italian Car Collector and sort of poopooed the teutonic German Marques such as Mercedez and BMW, but my 3.0cs changed my mind about Bimmers and my SL is quite simply the best car I have ever had. (I have had a lot of cars) . The 560 SL is the tank roadster to buy as all of the bugs were worked out by this time in the development of the model and they are great performers. There appears to be no rust on this car and the interior is tear free and will clean up nicely. The car has both tops. Now is the time to buy one of these! All cars have an inverted bell curve of value and we are already on the upswing side of the curve on these great cars! This freshly restored example has been well cared for its entire life, it came to the currect owner in 1985, by way of California then Arizona. A rust free example, the owner decided to restore the car, and embarked on a comprehensive restoration which has just been completed. Most of the original interior was able to be retained it was in such fine shape- only the front carpet was replaced. Over 1000 hours were spent on the restoration of this stunning example. Featuring the desirable Air Conditioning, and finished in the desirable White with Cognac interior, this is the hot ticket as far as Pagoda Sl's go. The car runs and drives very very well, and can be pressed into immediate service, although I would go collect some trophies before touring the car. New wheels were added during the restoration- the originals go with the car-and the chrome wheel well trim is installed properly with the correct clips versus being screwed into the body. All the Aluminum under the hood has been polished, which really gives the car the extra detail it needs to separate it from every other Pagoda on the show field. This is a spectacular example. This is the finest 280SL we have had the opportunity to represent, and we sell a lot of these cars! If you are looking for the finest one you can find, look no further! They were sold as the "pagoda roof" SL Class. The W 113 replaced the W 198 SL-Class in 1963 and was replaced by the R107 SL-Class in 1972. All models boast an inline six-cylinder engine with multi-port fuel injection using a mechanical pump system adapted from the diesel motors. All are rear-wheel drive, but are also equipped with independent rear suspension, a feature that greatly improved road handling. Most of these early SLs were sold with both the removable hard top and a soft top in the so-called "Coupe/Roadster" configuration, but there was also a "California Coupe" version available that came with the removable hardtop but no soft top. In these models, the soft top well (between the passenger compartment and trunk) is removed, and a drop-down bench seat is installed in its place. The rear seat is small and not very useful, so these 2+2 models are rare but not especially sought after today. While the SLs are relatively heavy compared to other similar roadsters, weight was reduced in part by the use of aluminum panels for the trunk lid, front hood, tonneau cover and door skins. Production began in 1963 with the 2.3 liter 230-SL. These models were commonly 4-speed manual transmission cars, but a 4-speed automatic transmission was also available and popular for U.S. market cars. The 230-SL sported front disc / rear drum power-assisted brakes. They quickly gained popularity in the U.S. market, and this eventually led to more and more cars being built with automatic transmissions. The 2.8 liter 280 SL was introduced in 1967 and continued production largely unchanged through 1971 when the W 113 was replaced by the entirely new, and substantially heavier, R 107 350 SL/450 SL. Most 280 SL cars built for the U.S. market were equipped with automatic transmission. Manual transmission cars came with either a 4-speed tramsmission or the super rare ZF-5 speed. The ZF 5 speed is very rare sought after by American collectors. In the European market manual transmission cars were still dominant. 23,885 280 SLs were produced, of which 12,927 units went to the USA and 5,754 to other countries outside of Germany. The car runs and drives perfectly and has been professionally maintained during Jack's ownership. Jack used it sparingly on sunny summer days. This car has never been left out side overnight let alone driven in inclement weather. The car is completely rust free, which is very hard to find, and has never been in any altercations or accidents. The car has had a respray at some point, the dash is original and more of a grey blue, while the exterior is more of a silver blue, otherwise the car appears original. It comes with all it' s original tools and manuals. The car starts right up, runs smoothly and is ready for the road! Finished in a rare color combination, and fitted with the rare factory A/C and mother in law seat, this is a unique opportunity to acquire a nice solid Pagoda with a known history.
