This 1984 380SL is a great balance of performance, style, price, and preservation, and for open-air motoring, the SL is still pretty tough to beat. In the mid-80s, wild colors were in fashion, but every-conservative Mercedes-Benz always got it right. In this car's case, it's beautiful navy blue bodywork with tan hides inside, a combination that has looked great for decades, if not centuries. The dark blue finish gives the SL a big car look despite its rather diminutive size, and in a Mercedes, elegance is never an option but mandatory. The dark color also emphasizes how straight and clean this one is, thanks to a lifetime in a warm climate and only 91,678 original miles (that's not many at all on a 30-year-old Mercedes-Benz). A gold pinstripe offers a bit of contrast and the darker colors like this do a much better job of disguising the heavy federally-mandated bumpers, so it looks sleek and trim compared to many of its siblings. There's plenty of shine, but a dedicated hobbyist could really take it up a notch with a professional buff so that the car can really live up to the legacy of the three-pointed star on its nose. Most R107 SLs received MB-Tex vinyl, but this lovely roadster wears genuine leather, which makes a big difference in the way it feels. The design is familiar, of course, but that's part of the SL's appeal, and with everything so sensibly arranged and logical, is there really any other way to do it? The upholstery's condition is excellent all around, particularly for an open car, and the contrasting black dash is not only attractive but practical as it reduces reflections in the windshield. Big, easy-to-read gauges were a Mercedes-Benz hallmark for decades and the giant steering wheel makes this car feel substantial when you're at the helm. Features like automatic climate control, power windows, and cruise control mean it's one of the most user-friendly 2-seaters you can own and the lovely carpeted package shelf behind the seats offers good storage space when you're in a hurry. A blue canvas convertible top stows neatly under the hard boot in back and looks almost new and like all SLs, it includes a removable hardtop. In 1980, the SL switched to a 3.8 liter V8, which still delivers the kind of effortless performance for which these cars are famous. They're also quite reliable and easy to maintain, so don't be afraid of owning this one. It starts easily with a familiar V8 thrum from the exhaust and the bubbly idle and smooth torque make it feel beautifully polished from behind the wheel. The engine bay is very nicely maintained, super clean, and full of correct parts, so no worries about deferred maintenance here, and the 3-speed automatic transmission has a knack for always being in the right gear. The all-independent suspension is supple yet athletic, and while this is no sports car, it doesn't mind hustling a bit on your favorite roads. 4-wheel discs live behind those familiar Mercedes-Benz "pie crust" wheels and carry right-sized 205/70/14 blackwall radials. Complete with original books and manuals, this is a clean, tidy SL in great colors that we can heartily recommend for summertime fun. There's an immense dignity in this car, a formal 4-door that everyone recognizes still has some pretty serious blasting powder under the hood. Having spent almost the entirety of its life in sunny California, this beautifully maintained S-class looks spectacular in bright Arctic White with gray accents. There's no hiding the fact that it's a big car (the "L" in SEL denotes the long-wheelbase version), but the white paint keeps it looking fit and trim overall. There's no sign of major accident damage or other hidden issues, and the paint has a great shine that proves that you really did get more car for your money with a Mercedes. All four doors open and close with that remarkable precision that only the Germans seem able to deliver, and once you're inside it seals up like a tomb. The big grille is imposing even 25 years later, and coming up behind slower traffic in this heavy Panzerwagon clears traffic as effectively as a battering ram. There's not a lot of chrome, but the details remain in excellent shape with unmarked bumpers and crisply rendered letters on the trunk lid. The gray leather interior is so elegant and understated that it's impossible to tell if it's 1988 or 2008. The upholstery is in excellent condition with minimal wear, a tribute to the quality of the materials and the care it's received. There's real wood on the dash and the familiar instrument panel shows big, bold gauges and intuitive controls throughout. Everything you could imagine in 1988 was standard equipment, from automatic climate control to power windows and locks to Mercedes' industry-defining power seat controls. The original Becker Grand Prix AM/FM/cassette radio still lives in the dash and sounds remarkably good due to the amazing silence inside this car, even at speed. Thick, plus carpets with matching floor mats have a sinfully decadent feel and rear seat passengers will feel like they're riding in a mini-limousine with enough legroom for the front line of the LA Lakers. There's also a massive trunk that looks virtually unused and includes the original jack and tool kit. Mercedes 4.2-liter OHC V8 is a direct descendant of the superlative engines used throughout the '70s and '80s, with unbeatable reliability and plenty of torque. The California lifestyle seems to agree with this big sedan, because the engine bay is crisply detailed and even the raw metal parts are still shiny. Complete maintenance has kept it in top condition and turning the key is met with a reassuring smooth start every single time. Pull the familiar shifter into Drive and the car oozes away from a stop in second gear for ultimate smoothness, but booting the throttle will give you a first-gear downshift and acceleration you wouldn't expect from something this big. The suspension is competent yet comfortable and the 4-wheel discs are powerful, as you'd expect from a 4000-pound cruiser with a 130 MPH top speed. Classic Mercedes alloys are fitted with 205/65/15 Dunlop radials with a lot of life left in them. After that, the cars were mainstream, and the engineers were joined by the marketing department, and the slogan "Engineered like no other car" fell by the wayside. This two owner 1989 560SL represents the last of the best, a low-mileage survivor that proves why these cars are still wonderful machines that truly deserve their honored reputations. If you could afford one of these when it was new, it meant you had well and truly arrived, and that you cared about smart investing as much as making a good first impression. Brilliant Silver is the perfect color on a grand tourer such as this, and it is remarkably well preserved on this 31,513-mile example. It has clearly led an easy life in a warm climate, and at 32 years old, it is only just now getting broken-in. Panel gaps are exemplary and the trim fits with a precision that was typical of Mercedes-Benz quality of the era, and the "built like a bank vault" term was coined just for these cars. The heavy chrome and rubber bumpers were an unfortunate by-product of federal regulations, but they, too, add to the car's appeal with their purposeful look, as if Mercedes didn't care about appearance as much as function-which was 100% true. There's also a single pinstripe running the length of the body in contrasting blue, just to tie it together with the elegant interior. Sadly 1989 was the last year of the W127 model, but at least it received a slender third brake light at the trailing edge of the deck lid, a big improvement over the clunky unit found on earlier models. The luscious blue leather interior is incredibly inviting and looks upscale even in today's world. The leather used in these cars is not only lovely to look at, but wears like iron, and the bucket seats have a comfortable look while still being supportive and firm. Matching dark blue carpets look unaffected by the sun's rays or dirty shoes, and burled walnut trim warms up the interior without detracting from the all-business controls. A modern AM/FM/CD stereo has been retrofitted in the dash, but the factory Becker unit is included with the sale if you're a stickler for originality. Even the trunk is upholstered in plush carpet that's nicer than the stuff found in the passenger compartments of lesser automobiles. This car also offers two tops, a new navy blue folding roof and a color-matched hardtop. The final evolution of the 5.6 liter SOHC V8 was designed to run for hundreds of thousands of miles with only routine maintenance, and with only 31,513 original miles, this one is still fresh. With a bubbly, bouncy idle and seemingly limitless reserves of torque, it moves the two-seat roadster effortlessly without the high-strung theatrics of lesser machines. The engine bay sparkles like new, while the chassis is clean and obviously rust-free thanks to a life down south. A 4-speed automatic transmission swaps gears unobtrusively, and the supple, all-independent suspension is willing to dance, but is equally comfortable on long stretches of highway. Traditional MB alloy wheels wearing 205/65/15 Bridgestone radials neatly straddle the ride/performance equation. Renowned for their engineering, cars like this SL are a reminder of when the gap between the ordinary and the extraordinary was wide indeed. Right now, we would recommend that you buy and hold a car like this 1975 Mercedes-Benz 450SL. For one, they're insanely affordable and offer great performance and value, and two, prices can only go up from here. So enjoy it now and cash in later with one of the great 2-seaters in automotive history. There is no better way to look and feel like a movie star than with an SL like this. They were A-list cars when they were new and most folks see that three-pointed star on the nose and a top that goes down and they assume you've won the lottery. This pretty primrose yellow SL has had just three owners, two of which were in the same family, so it's been very well maintained throughout its life. The cars didn't change much over their production life, so an early one is as desirable as a later one because the clean lines are so timeless. It was repainted a few years ago and it looks quite good. Hailing from down south, it isn't a rust bucket and all the rubber trim is in good order. A few chrome bits add substance to the SL's diminutive shape, all of it in very good condition. The tan upholstery is a nice contrast to the yellow paint and uses familiar MB-Tex vinyl which is both durable and comfortable. The seats appear to be original, more proof of the material's longevity and the car's care over the years. The steering wheel is big and feels hefty in your hands, so you know instantly that you're at the helm of something substantial. Familiar gauges are big and easy to read, monitoring all the usual vitals, and this one carries factory A/C, power windows, and cruise control, all desirable features, even in a top-of-the-line Mercedes-Benz. The AM/FM/cassette stereo is the only deviation from stock equipment, but the upgrade is a welcome one. There's a snug-fitting black canvas convertible top stowed under the deck, and it's so nice that it has to be a replacement, and the car, like all SLs, comes with a color-matched hardtop as well. The trunk is outfitted with the original rubber mat and still includes the factory tool kit strapped down in the corner. The Mercedes-Benz 4.5 liter V8 was a mainstay of production throughout the '70s and into the '80s for a good reason: it was bulletproof. While it's true that a neglected SL can be expensive to put right, properly maintained cars like this are a joy to drive and as long as you take care of them, they'll run forever. There's plenty of torque on tap and thanks to an early Bosch fuel injection system, it starts and runs with a far more modern feel than you'd expect. The 3-speed automatic transmission feels syrupy around town, starting in second gear most of the time, but on the highway is where this car shines and if you let it stretch its legs a bit, you'll find that few cars are better at eating up miles of pavement. It's quite clean underneath, with a correct exhaust system that sounds just right, and we've always liked these cars wearing color-matched hubcaps, which add a sporty flair. You can buy this car with confidence, as it comes with all kinds of paperwork, including the original invoice, maintenance receipts, and the owner's manual.
