1960 Mercedes 220SE Cabriolet The 220SE was produced from only October 1958 to November 1960 with only 1,112 cabriolets built for the three model years. In 1958, Mercedes updated their 220 S when the 2.2-liter engine was fitted with Bosch fuel-injection and produced 137 BHP. Internally, the injection cabriolets were known by bodycode W128 with the engine code M127.983. The impressive 220 Cabriolet was produced by the Sindelfingen factory. Even more impressive than their styling and engineering was their price tag, which was a staggering $9,000 making it one of the most expensive cars of their era. The Mercedes-Benz W128 was a 6-cylinder automobile that was available in sedan, coupé, or cabriolet body styles and produced from October, 1958 to August, 1959 (Cabriolet A/C and Coupé to November, 1960). Its main model, the 220SE, was the last of the"Ponton" series which had design roots and styling cues beginning in 1953 with the Mercedes-Benz 180 sedan (W120 chassis). The 220SE featured a unitized body/frame construction and fully independent suspension. All models were fitted with a 2.2 L (2195 cc) straight 6 gasoline engine (M127) with aluminum head, overhead camshaft, and Bosch mechanical fuel injection. An automatic clutch was available with the column-mounted 4-speed manual transmission. This collectible was meticulously cared for an improved over the last twelve years by last owner. Complete records including over $40,000 in receipts detailing the improvements made on this classic are available with the car. The engine had a complete re-build done 3,000 miles ago by noted Mercedes craftsman, Steven Marx. 1956 Mercedes 190SL “Mercy” This 1956 Mercedes 190SL represents what is wonderful about the classic car market. This original car has been meticulously cared for, with every careful step documented and has remained in one family for the last sixty-eight years. Mercy was handed down from generation to generation and cared for as a family heirloom should be. Mercy was treated to an eight year full nut and bolt restoration with an eye for exacting detail, strictly following factory specifications, that was completed in 1999 just in time to compete in the Santa Barbara Concours d’Elegance in September of that year, where it was awarded a 2nd place finish. You just can’t find a better example of a 190SL with such careful records and precise ownership history anywhere. Percival C. “Dobie” Keith, Jr. was responsible for the design, construction and startup of the Oak Ridge uranium processing plant during World War II. He purchased this rare collectible as a gift for his wife, Anne, in December of 1956 on a business trip to Germany. Before taking delivery of the car from a dealership in Dusseldorf, Anne insisted that the dealership mount a St. Christopher medal on the glove compartment door, where it can still be seen today. The car was shipped to New York and then driven to “Windfall” the Keith’s Estate in Peapack, New Jersey. The car was only driven sparingly in the summer and carefully stored on blocks in the winter. From then until the complete restoration project began in 1992 the car remained in the Keith family and was driven only occasionally and maintained meticulously. The stewardship of this vehicle from generation to generation is testimony to the virtue of respect. Respect for family and respect for this heirloom. Since the completion of the restoration the family has entered Mercy into a number of shows to be judged.
