However, a year later, they went a step further with the Exige! And, by 2007, the Exige S came out with the factory supercharged system giving the car the 220hp that it deserved. Plus, the roof scoop is now fully functional feeding fresh air directly into the intercooler. The Exige S is everything a sport car should be! Weighing under 2,000lbs, this street legal go-kart/race car is the definition of “driving experience”. This much fun can’t be legal. When the tach reaches 6,000 RPM, the variable valves come to life and literally screams to 8,000 RPM. This Exige S was sold new by a California Lotus dealer on March 7th, 2007. The first owner lived in Los Angeles and sold it to the current owner in December of 2008 with about 8,000-miles on it. The current owner is an avid collector and enthusiast. It was ordered from the factory with the following options: Starshield Touring Package Track Package Lifestyle Paint The Lotus Stage II exhaust was installed by the dealer in 2010. The current owner kept this Exige S carefully stored and used it sparingly to keep it lubricated. It was never tracked or abused. This example is in very nice condition. The paint is all-original and has a great shine to it. If you aren’t familiar with Chili Red, it is a “Lifestyle” special order Lotus color that has orange metallic flake in the paint. In bright light, it has a sunset-like hue. It is similar to a darker orange. The original Starshield clear bra is in good shape with just a minor blemish by the Lotus emblem (see pic). The rear bumper has a few blemishes in the paint as well. They are hard to see unless you are a few inches away (see pics). The wheels are in great shape with no curb rash and are wearing near new rear Yokohama Advan tires. The fronts are original with about ½ life remaining. The rear brakes have about 1/3 life remaining and the fronts have more than ½ left. All the glass is original and the windscreen has no significant blemishes. The interior is equally as nice. The leather seats are in great condition with no rips or tears. The floor mats are brand new from the local Lotus dealer. The headliner on the roof has just been replaced (common issue with sagging) using factory ordered material. The dash and door panels are perfect. All the lights and gauges work properly. The A/C blows cold. The standard radio (Alpine) has been upgraded and includes a rear camera (a must for backing up an Exige). The center console has been trimmed in carbon fiber. This Exige S drives incredible. The throttle response is intoxicating. Everything feels tight with no rattles. The clutch engages perfectly and shifts smoothly. The brakes have excellent feedback with no fading. Turning is intuitive and flat. It has excellent road manners even on uneven surfaces. This is an excellent low-mile survivor example that has been lightly used. Original owner's manual is included. the world in 1989. There were only 3,885 built worldwide by time production ended in 1992. Of those, only 539 were federalized for the U.S. and a mere 117 were specifically designated for California. These hand-built/low-production sports cars are considered (even to this day) one of the most reliable Lotus cars ever built. Much of this is due to the fact that the Isuzu 1.6L turbo engine was used as its power plant. This workhorse motor was found to be extremely reliable, inexpensive to maintain, and parts were readily available. Weighing only 2,250 pounds, the dual overhead cam/16-valve engine with its air-to-air intercooled turbocharger made this roadster a pleasure to drive. And, it still managed to sip gas and get nearly 30mpg. Kensington Motors, LTD of Long Beach, CA sold this Elan when new on December 30th, 1992 to a local Orange County resident. This first owner kept the car until 2005 and used it as a light weekend cruiser. When sold to the current owner, it only had 30,000-miles. For the past 10-years, this owner has primarily used it as a daily driver. This owner is a car enthusiast and understands how to properly maintain his cars. All services since new were either performed at the Lotus dealer or a very well respected independent Lotus service specialists. Highlights of recent services/significant repairs include: Complete repaint less than 3-years ago (clear coat was peeling) Timing belt and cam sensor replaced (20k miles ago) Coolant system service (new expansion tank and hoses – 10k miles ago) New catalytic converter (less than 2k miles ago) Rebuilt turbo charger (less than 2k miles ago) New Interstate battery Replaced drive shaft boot (10k miles ago) New front brake rotors and pads New rear brake pads and new rear wheel bearings New spark plugs and wires It is clear that this owner really enjoyed this Lotus and took excellent care of the car. He performed frequent oil services (at least annually) as well. Considering the age and miles, this Lotus is in very good condition. The paint looks great with minimal signs of use (was repainted less than 3-years ago). There are no signs of accidents or any other damage. The brakes are new all the way around and the rear tires have more than half-life remaining. The front tires are at about 30% life. The soft top was rarely put up as the car was only used during dry driving conditions. The top is in great condition with no tears or rips. The rear plastic window has some discoloration due to age but is still clear. The interior is in pretty good shape but shows wear on the driver seat. The exit bolster is worn down and the bottom of the seat has stitching coming apart as well as the bottom support is collapsed. The rest of the interior looks very nice. The dash is good with no cracks and all the gauges/buttons seem to operate properly. The A/C was never used. It blows, but not cold. This Elan just passed the strict California smog test and registration is good until January, 2016. It comes with the original owner’s manual, spare tire, battery tender, extra key, and tools. 2008) No Accidents/Straight Original Car Matching Numbers Car located in Costa Mesa, CA Colin Chapman developed the Lotus 7 in the late 50’s as a road-legal racer that embodied the spirit of all his designs: performance through low weight and simplicity. Unexpectedly, the model was incredibly successful. By the early 70’s Chapman was so focused on is F1 program and other modern road cars; he didn’t have time to manufacture the parts for the Lotus 7 cars. So, he sold everything to Caterham who had already been assembling the majority of the cars for Lotus. Who would have thought that this design would have lasted nearly 60-years. In 1973, Lotus started the transition and Caterham started assembling their first Super 7’s as their own manufactured car. Overnight, Graham Nearn took over the rights, parts, tools, and even the employees. The first generation Caterham’s were essentially a Lotus S3 built by the same people with a Caterham build plate. As a result, some of these Super 7’s that made their way new to the U.S. were titled as a Lotus. This example was sold new to a woman enthusiast that lived in Colorado. It was titled as a Lotus and even the original license plate said, “LOTUS 7” (which is included with the car). She kept the car as a weekend/summer toy. It was never tracked or abused. In 1987, she brought the car to Southern California in order to find a new owner. The current owner lives in Newport Beach and purchased the car directly from the original owner. Initially, he registered the car in California; but, he found it easier to title it in Arizona (where he has vacation property). The car has lived covered in his garage here in Orange County. Like the first owner, he lightly used the car for weekend fun and never abused it or tracked it. This ownership history has really been the key to this car’s survival. It is remarkable how original and well preserved the car is. The chassis is very dry with no rot or damage. The original orange fiberglass looks great. There is some light checking on some of the paint but it is subtle. The aluminum looks great with just minor scratches on the bonnet. The current owner ordered a NOS (new old stock) aluminum bonnet from Caterham many years ago. It is still in the box with all the original packaging. The original top and frame have never been installed on the car and although the top is a bit crispy, it is in very nice condition. The tires appear to be quite old as well which is remarkable. Although not recommended for spirited driving, the tires show very few signs of age. It is a testament to the overall preservation condition of this car. Although this S3 was not driven very often, it was routinely serviced by some of the best local mechanics. Recently, nearly $3,000 was invested to make sure the car was in great driving condition. The following services were performed: Rebuild original carbs New engine mounts Test/clean fuel system Major service (oil change, spark plugs, valve adjustment, tuning) Service cooling system including radiator flush As a result, the car drives fantastic. Shifting is smooth and the car starts easily. Power is extremely strong and the handling is very crisp. It is a joy to drive. These cars were an important part of the common man sports car movement. There are very few intact/original survivors left.
