For sale is my 1966 Land Rover 88 Series IIA with rare Ferry Roof option. This rover was purchased at the Bonhams Simeone 2014 museum auction and was owned by the curator of the museum for the last 14 years. The Rover runs and Yard drives but will need some re conditioning IE new tires and hoses and belts to make it 100% trail ready again. The Rover suffers from the normal Series IIA rust issues but the frame is solid, it has been patched a few places over the years but is useable. A short description from the auction The Land Rover Inspired by the US Army's wartime 'Jeep', developed in haste and intended for short-term, small-scale production, the Land Rover would defy its creators' initial skepticism. Rover bosses the Wilks brothers saw the need for a tough, four-wheel-drive, utility vehicle to serve the needs of the agricultural community in the immediate post-war years, but the Land Rover's runaway success took the company by surprise. The necessity of using corrosion resistant aluminum panels at a time of severe steel shortage turned into a positive virtue in the Land Rover's sphere of operations, and the use of existing components - including the P3 saloon's 1,595cc, four-cylinder, sidevalve engine - kept production costs down and cut development time. Ruggedly built and simple in construction, the Land Rover proved capable of surviving in countries where conditions were primitive to say the least, a characteristic that helped contribute to its worldwide acceptance. Indeed, it is estimated that two-thirds of all Land Rovers ever produced are still in existence today. Progressively developed since its launch in 1948 and modified to serve countless specialist requirements, the ubiquitous Land Rover looks set to continue well into the 21st Century. The Motorcar Offered This classic Land Rover, complete with a ferry roof and Alpine windows with sunshield, is a rough-and-tumble classic which has been stored but not run for the past 10 years. It is mechanically complete. Its rugged character is emphasized by the spare tire mounted, of all places, on the hood. In generally used condition, this Rover should probably remain in this state because of its practical beauty. Obviously it will have to be re-commissioned prior to use, but it was always a faithful performer in its day.
