Up for sale in the Houston showroom is one of the most iconic cars in history, the 1981 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am \"Bandit\". The Pontiac Firebird was a car designed by the Pontiac division of General Motors between 1967 and 2002. The Firebird was introduced the same year as the Chevrolet Camaro and coincidentally shared the same chassis. This move by GM coincided with the release of the 1967 Mercury Cougar, which shared its chassis with another iconic car, the Ford Mustang. Firebirds were used in the Trans-Am racing series in the 1960s and 1970s. When the Firebird Trans Am was released, there was a lot of noise over the model\'s inability to compete in the Trans-Am because the smallest available engine was too large for use in SCCA presented series. The name also caused controversy because it was used without permission from the SCCA, who threatened to file suit against GM. GM ended up settling the dispute by paying $5 to the SCCA for every car sold. And also let\'s not forget Smokey and the Bandit was a smash hit at the box office. Bankrolled with an original budget of $5.3 million which was cut to $4.3 million two days before initial production and the film still grossed $126,737,428 in North America making it the 4th highest grossing movie of 1977. The worldwide gross is estimated at over $300 million. In the final year of the Second Generation Firebirds (1981), the Trans Am for sale still used the same engines as it had in the previous model year, with the only change being the addition of a new electronic carburetion system atop the 301 cubic inch Pontiac. 1980 and 1981 saw the biggest engine changes for the Trans Am since 1972. The 301, offered in 1979 as a credit option, was now the engine to have. Backed by the 3 speed automatic transmission and a 10 bolt Pontiac rear end, I guess you could say this car was made to fly. Signed by the Bandit himself, this is a car show magnet. Original BANONE license plate is with the car along with Burt Reynolds signed autography with letter of authenticity. Options on this gorgeous 1981 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am include: A/C, am/fm/cd radio, power door locks, power windows, power brakes, power steering, tilt wheels, t-tops, numbers matching and aluminum alloy wheels on performance radial tires.
