Up for sale in the Houston showroom is one of the most iconic cars in history, the 1981 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am \"Bandit\". The Pontiac Firebird was a car designed by the Pontiac division of General Motors between 1967 and 2002. The Firebird was introduced the same year as the Chevrolet Camaro and coincidentally shared the same chassis. This move by GM coincided with the release of the 1967 Mercury Cougar, which shared its chassis with another iconic car, the Ford Mustang. Firebirds were used in the Trans-Am racing series in the 1960s and 1970s. When the Firebird Trans Am was released, there was a lot of noise over the model\'s inability to compete in the Trans-Am because the smallest available engine was too large for use in SCCA presented series. The name also caused controversy because it was used without permission from the SCCA, who threatened to file suit against GM. GM ended up settling the dispute by paying $5 to the SCCA for every car sold. And also let\'s not forget Smokey and the Bandit was a smash hit at the box office. Bankrolled with an original budget of $5.3 million which was cut to $4.3 million two days before initial production and the film still grossed $126,737,428 in North America making it the 4th highest grossing movie of 1977. The worldwide gross is estimated at over $300 million. In the final year of the Second Generation Firebirds (1981), the Trans Am for sale still used the same engines as it had in the previous model year, with the only change being the addition of a new electronic carburetion system atop the 301 cubic inch Pontiac. 1980 and 1981 saw the biggest engine changes for the Trans Am since 1972. The 301, offered in 1979 as a credit option, was now the engine to have. Backed by the 3 speed automatic transmission and a 10 bolt Pontiac rear end, I guess you could say this car was made to fly. Signed by the Bandit himself, this is a car show magnet. Original BANONE license plate is with the car along with Burt Reynolds signed autography with letter of authenticity. Options on this gorgeous 1981 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am include: A/C, am/fm/cd radio, power door locks, power windows, power brakes, power steering, tilt wheels, t-tops, numbers matching and aluminum alloy wheels on performance radial tires. This 1977 Pontiac Trans Am is for sale in our Louisville KY showroom. Bringing back fond childhood memories of one favorite movies, Smokey %26 the Bandit, is the 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. This is partially restored Trans Am from the %26acirc;??70%26acirc;??s, that has been properly maintained, with only items needing to rebuilt or replaced being attended to and it just has over 116,037 original miles. The Pontiac 400, not the Oldsmobile 403 that many of these T/A%26acirc;??s had, was rebuilt 2500 miles ago. It is believed to be the original engine, but cannot be documented. The TH350 3-speed automatic transmission was also rebuilt at the same time the engine was rebuilt. The rear end is a factory posi-trac unit. This is an original factory AC car, the air blows cold, it now uses the more common and affordable 134A Freon. The other mechanical items that have been attended to include; new exhaust, new brake hoses, new battery and a new AC hose. The interior looks almost new, and that is because most of it has been replaced. New interior items include front %26 back seat upholstery, carpet and headliner. In the trunk is the original space saver and inflation canister. This Bandit Trans Am rides on an original set factory honeycomb wheels that have been wrapped in raised white letter radial tires. Just in case you don%26acirc;??t remember the Bandit, here is a quick refresher! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnRwQjTYfGI This 1977 Pontiac Trans Am can be seen, including an HD video, at www.gatewayclassiccars.com or call at 812-294-1555 for more information.
