A little more upscale than its Chevy siblings, this one includes a strong-running small block V8, a decent list of comfort and convenience options, and a nicely preserved overall presentation that will help its status as a future collectable. It's quite possible that this truck wears its original paint, and aside from some very minor factory-style orange peel in the finish, it looks fantastic. Trucks rarely led easy lives and in 1978 not a lot of guys were buying vehicles like this as collectors' items, so finding one that wasn't worked hard is none too easy. Go over it carefully and there's no evidence that it was ever wrecked or rusty and the squared-off look of these trucks will remain popular for decades to come. The regular cab/short bed combination is the one to own if you want to drive and enjoy your pickup, making for a more maneuverable package that feels just about the right size pulling into the Home Depot parking lot. That six-foot bed is in remarkably good condition overall and uses chrome bed rails to help secure cargo. Other dress-up pieces include the chrome window visors, a beautiful set of factory bumpers, a grille that looks like new, and a cool spotlight on the driver's side. A matching burgundy interior is a nice combination of working-class functionality and luxury, offering a vinyl seat cover that wears like iron and still looks great, reasonably plush carpets that make the GMC feel quieter and more luxurious inside, and brushed aluminum trim to brighten things up a bit. Options include ice cold factory A/C and the original AM/FM radio, plus a full array of factory gauges. Heavy-duty rubber floor mats are probably a good idea in a truck that can still earn its keep around the house and with a column shifter, there's plenty of room for three-across seating in a pinch. The dash pad is remarkably well-preserved and this is one of those rare vehicles where you can climb in and instantly feel like you've been driving it all your life. Power comes from America's favorite V8, a 350 cubic inch crate small block. The engine bay is quite clean and offers a few dress-up parts like the chrome air cleaner lid and a set of finned valve covers that always look good. An aluminum intake with a good old Rochester 4-barrel carburetor give it snappy throttle response and plenty of torque for doing trucky things and with a true dual exhaust system and glasspack-style mufflers, it sounds like a V8 should sound. The truck's originality is highlighted by the original jack and tire iron still living under the hood along with R12 refrigerant in the A/C system. A TH350 3-speed automatic transmission provides reliability and an unobtrusive demeanor and the original rear end still hangs on factory leaf springs, so it doesn't mind doing a little hauling now and then. Factory Rally wheels look especially good on these trucks, with this pickup carrying big 275/60/15 Cooper truck radials. We never seem to be able to keep these in stock, and trucks like this have all the hallmarks of future collectables: good memories, fun to drive, and easy to service, and this is a great choice. A lot of guys grew up around trucks just like this and fondly remember the days of square bodywork and traditional V8 horsepower, making good ones highly-sought collectors' items today. This gorgeous blue pickup is no exception. The paint and bodywork were restored about eight years ago, and it still looks awesome. Unlike so many vehicles in 1984, this one got some timeless colors that still look great today and were accurately reproduced in modern urethanes when the time for a repaint finally arrived. Factory style two-tone gives it a longer, sleeker profile, but there's no denying that the GM pickups of this era were great-looking vehicles. This one has led a good life, too, with straight sheetmetal, good gaps, and a shine that's probably better than 1984 paint could muster. A billet grille makes the front end look a little bit custom, but with big, red GMC lettering, there's no escaping what kind of truck this is. There's a rubber bed mat and what might be original paint underneath, showing that this truck never really worked very hard but doesn't mind putting in a long day now and then. All the original brightwork remains, including some really nice chrome bumpers, a diamond-plate tailgate protector, and oversized mirrors. The largely original interior offers handsome and plush blue upholstery to tie in perfectly with the exterior, and it's all in very good condition, especially considering its age. The instrument panel offers a complete array of gauges that are all fully functional, all visible through the spokes of a custom leather-wrapped Grant steering wheel with a GMC horn button to make it look OEM. You'll also note factory A/C, which was recently serviced and converted to R-134a, and a vented rear window for the more mild days. The entertainment system is about the only part that isn't stock, with the factory radio being replaced by a Pioneer AM/FM/CD head unit in the original location. A set of heavy-duty floor mats protect the plush blue carpets (unusual for a pickup) and there's an aftermarket cup holder in the dash that's a sorely needed upgrade for those of us who actually drive our toys. The 350 cubic inch V8 engine appears to be a replacement block installed sometime I the truck's past. It's not stock, however, and now sports the usual upgrades that include an Edelbrock intake manifold and Holley 4-barrel carburetor, chrome valve covers and air cleaner, and some bright ignition wires. It's got a clean, well-maintained look although it's not a show truck, and with power steering and brakes, it's easy to handle regardless of the load. A 700R4 4-speed automatic gives it long legs, so you can turn up the A/C and unwind without listening to the engine screaming at you and the 2-speed transfer case allows it to climb through the slop without working hard. A dual exhaust system gives it a nice rumble and upgraded shocks were part of the 2.5-inch lift that gives it that towering stance. Handsome Pro-Comp polished aluminum wheels are recent additions and wear fat 32x11.50-15 BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A radials. Don't underestimate the appeal of these full-sized trucks, which not only look great, but are fantastic drivers, and this one is nicer than most.
