That reboot began with a partially restored body that was sandblasted all the way to bare metal. That metal revealed a solid fuselage that, after the addition of a new trunk pan and a few patches, was massaged and block-sanded into a collection of virtually flawless surfaces. Once those surfaces were completely clean and fully prepped, their all-business demeanor was reanimated in smooth 2-stage that reflects correct Bright Blue Metallic pigment. And today, the car rolls as one lust worthy classic that's ready to show AND go! Every bit of this B-Body's bright ornamentation appears straight and presents well. And while it's really hard to determine whether all those baubles and bolt-ons are original, they certainly look nice! At the front of the car, a restored grille hangs a bright "R/T" script between four halogen headlamps, a clean chrome bumper and crystal clear parking lights. Behind that grille, correct fender-mount turn signals frame a silver-detailed hood that flows to a factory antenna and satin-finish windshield wipers. Behind that hood, correctly tinted glass founds pristine stainless trim beneath correct drip rails and a correct driver's mirror. Below that glass, a sculpted profile anchors traditional Chrysler door handles and dent-free rocker guards between small "HEMI" emblems, bright "R/T" scripts, small marker lamps and fresh wheel frames. Compression is sparked by Chrysler Electronic Suppression cables, snapped onto a correct points distributor. And resultant combustion is cooled by a big, 26-inch radiator that's fitted with pliable hoses via old school squeeze clamps. Visually, the body-matched engine compartment is clean and predictably impressive. Thanks to the car's thorough rebuild, the big mill performs just as well as when it rolled out of the showroom. A roster of correct and restored details includes items like factory decals, a familiar Chrysler washer reservoir and a reproduction MoPar battery. DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION Slide under this solid B-Body and you'll find a virtually spotless chassis that's framed by original factory undercoating. At the center of those bones, an original A727 TorqueFlite, which hangs a correct PK2801544K part number beneath a matching partial VIN, spins power to a correct 8.75-inch axle. That spirited driveline rides in a correct, completely restored Hemi Suspension, which is fitted with correct power steering. Stops come courtesy of correct heavy-duty power drum brakes. Exhaust is handled by upgraded, 3-inch tubes, which bend around an H-shaped crossover and brash Flowmaster mufflers. And everything rolls on Bright Blue Metallic steelies, which twist correct F70-15 Goodyear Speedway redlines around brilliant fratzog center caps. INTERIOR Swivel this Dodge's level doors and you'll find a correct White on Blue interior that's functional, straightforward and very livable. It's not just the big V8, or the valuable options. This one gets you with the details, like unique paint that shows off all the square-jawed angles we all love on this piece of American muscle. White is particularly nice when it's done correctly. The respray of the factory color leaves this coupe looking clean and pristine. Dodge really got the design right in '66. This classic has a wide stance that can make this intermediate look full-sized. There's plenty of style touches like the creases along the side that flare out on the quarters, and that cool taffy-pulled rear end that couldn't space out D-O-D-G-E any wider if it tried. Best of all, a subtle custom pinstripe package helps highlight every aggressive thought that was sculpted into the sheetmetal. The interior design proves that the Chrysler stylists were at the top of their game in the '60s. This is further highlighted by a professional restoration of the headliner and intricate seats. In between the front buckets is a center console with the highly stylized gearshift. There's a dashboard full of real gauges, not "idiot" lights (a nice upgrade), and a grippy steering wheel like the three-spoke style usually seen the Hemi muscle cars. But this one is built for comfort, that's why it has everything from heat/defrost, to power steering. There's even plenty of desirable spares (including a correct AM/FM radio) that come with the car. The 440 cubic-inch V8 in the engine bay is not the original motor, but the swap was for a very good reason. This was built with a 318 and sold to a doctor who made rural house calls. The original engine failed on him in 1967, and so he figured while the car was being fixed, he'd have a factory 440 motor installed. The engine proved to be strong and reliable enough that this is the powerplant still in the car today. In 1997 this Coronet went through a restoration that overhauled the engine, and included a new cam, chain, bearings, and rings. It now makes an awesome rumble from a Flowmaster dual exhaust. The three-speed automatic transmission was also rebuilt, and they added a 2,800 RPM stall converter. But this restoration went much further. It included an entire fuel system upgrade, new brakes, new driveshaft, and a 3.23 ratio Sure-Grip limited slip read end was installed. It goes down the road nicely thanks to new brushings and Hemi-sourced torsion bars. This package is capped off with the larger 15-inch cop car wheels, with dog dish ventilated hubcaps. You know there were fewer of these MOPARs produced, compared to the Fords or Chevys back in the 60s. That makes this quick coupe a rare gem with an interesting story. There was plenty of money invested in upgrading the V8 power and turning this into a all-dark machine, but that doesn't mean you have to pay too much. 1972 is a desirable year for Darts. This would be the last time they did not have federally mandated impact bumpers, and that means something special on a car like this. It's all-black style looks great when the painted bumpers hug the body like they're not even there. It gives this coupe a brute muscle car look that helps highlight features like the front chin spoiler. Even thought this mean Mopar is dark down to its steelie wheels, the paint is all done in such a nice high gloss that people will think of this less as a budget bruiser, and more like an undercover muscle machine. Open the door and you'll see more of this custom midnight attitude. The bucket seats are borrowed from a late model car (a comfortable upgrade), but the black vinyl pattern still matches everything else inside. The darkness is broken up by a hint of classy color, with the Dart's wood paneling remaining on the doors and dashboard. It also matches the iconic Hurst pistol grip shifter. This stick shift is part of the reason you'll be glad there is a sports steering wheel to hang onto, and a large AutoMeter tachometer with shift light to keep an eye on (there's a set of auxiliary gauges below the dash as well.) For everyone else in the car, there's an upgraded AM/FM/CD stereo to stay entertained. As you probably have guessed by now, there is something quite wicked under the hood of this Mopar. You could get a 340 cubic-inch motor like this one in the Dart Demon version in 1972, but even that did not get the famous three two-barrel carburetors on top. Yes, this one has been upgraded to the iconic six-pack! It's also received Mopar Performance valve covers, Jacobs Ultra Coil ignition, and long tube headers. This all combines to make the kind of rumble from the dual exhaust that you'd expect from a bad boy coupe. And you'll have no trouble proving this power on the streets, thanks to the four-speed manual transmission. But for those times when you just want to go around intimidating people at slow speeds, this custom Dart will cruise all day thanks to its power steering and front disc brakes. That's right, this is an exceptionally popular, but very rare muscle car, that's still in its correct wild color. Even better is this one came from the factory loaded! Does it get any better than finding a California Charger? Sure, when it also has had a professional respray of its original color. This classic orange Mopar shade is called Go Mango. The correct-spec white vinyl roof does not have a cool a name for its hue, but it looks great, and matches the factory optional bumblee stripe on the rear. The squared-off bodywork with its exquisite curves, and butch simulated vents on the front doors, looks good in any color, but this bright orange finish seems to give it an aggressive touch that cannot be ignored. Of course these Chargers never needed much help with intimidation, thanks to the wraparound chrome front bumper. It draws attention to the recessed front end that looks like it will inhale anything that gets in its way. Then again, most people (like Rosco P. Coltrane) only saw the exceptionally wide taillights of these Mopars as they rapidly pulled away. A burnt orange interior is the last thing you'd expect to see on this car, which is kinda cool. After all, it's going to make people at the car show ask you what the original color arrangement was, and you can show them the fender tag with the rare correct EK2/C6K4 combination. Beyond just the color novelty, this will draw attention for being a thoroughly loaded car right from the factory. It has the high-back bucket seats with center console, and everything looks comprehensively original from the heater/defrost controls to the AM radio. There's plenty of '60s style luxury wood veneering on the dash, console, steering wheel, and of course, the iconic pistol grip shifter. Because you will be rowing through the gears, you'll appreciate the full gauge package, including a large tachometer next to the speedometer. In a muscle car that been this clean so far, you know exactly what you'll see when you lift the hood. It's an exceptionally tidy engine bay, nearly overflowing with motor. The big 440 cubic-inch Magnum V8 is the factory-correct powerplant for this car, and it just looks awesome in its period-correct dressings. Of course, in any other engine bay the orange block would be a wild standout color. Just in case you don't want to lift the hood, the headers and dual exhaust gives this car a roar that warns others about the beastly motor. And you'll be able to uphold the king of the streets attitude thanks to the four-speed manual transmission and Super Track Pack rear end that has a 9.75 Dana 60 axle with 4.10 ratio - that's perfect for power takeoffs. And boy, a set of mirrors at the car show will show off how nice the underside is. But, also don't be afraid to take this coupe on the long trips thanks to front disc brakes and power steering. It's getting harder and harder to find these factory high-spec big-block Chargers. This is the one that gives you everything you could want (even the owner's manual) for far less than the price of building or restoring a vintage Mopar for yourself.
