Enjoy the extremely thorough information below about this vintage Datsun Z race car. Such comprehensive information/photos/video footage is provided for prospective buyers to be confident that this Z is for them. Purchase this vehicle with the utmost confidence. I have sold other vehicles via Ebay nationwide and worldwide with 100% positive feedback. I am a true Datsun fanatic that has owned and worked on my own numerous Z cars (240’s, 260’s, 280’s, ZX’s, 350Z, etc.). I currently have a 66k mile 280Z my father and I restored for my wife and an ’05 Anniversary 350Z as a daily driver. I know these classic Z cars well, and of course greatly appreciate them! Intro: For your consideration is this vintage Datsun Z (1974 260Z) race car that is ready for the track and to pass tech inspection. This car is a beast! It has a 3.1L stroker engine with 297 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque to propel 2,250 pounds (dyno sheet included and pictured below). This is a very competitive vehicle and about as quick as a lap time as it gets for the money. The engine was professionally built and dyno tuned by Sam of LNA Enterprises, a well-known Datsun racing specialist, located in North Carolina. The engine has approximately only nine events on it since having been completed in the past couple of years so it is still fresh. This Z is set up quite nicely with upgraded Wilwood brakes all around, coil overs, camber plates, Tokico Illumina adjustable struts, IMSA fiberglass body kit, and more. The car has received extensive recent maintenance and is track ready. Its Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) log book, engine build, and other receipts and documentation are included. Extensive details and specifications are outlined below. Also, please view the video footage and photos. If you are looking for an impressive classic Z, stroker engine, intense driving experience, or a track weapon to embarrass newer and more expensive vehicles, or a competitive vintage race car, this Z would be a great candidate. Video: A high definition video is provided to better show the condition of this Z and to show it driving. The walk-around video footage was taken in October of 2015 and on-track footage from 2015. It is a L28 block with the strong Maxima diesel crankshaft making it a 3.1L stroker motor. As mentioned, it was professionally built by Sam at LNA Enterprises for racing purposes. The work alone to the engine, not including the cost of the block, head, carburetors, intake, header, and related components cost over $8,000. To outright buy an inline 6 cyl Z car engine of this caliber with this set up would be above $13,000. This engine is impressive and makes this Z an absolute blast to drive. The amount of torque it has throughout the RPM range is excellent. At 4,000 RPM it has 243 lb-ft with a max torque of 269 lb-ft at 5,000 RPM. At 5,000 RPM it has 255 horsepower and peaks at 6,600 RPM with 297 horsepower. This Z weighs about 2,250 lbs so that is quite a nice power to weight ratio. Most other foreign vintage race cars are not near this powerful and if so are tens of thousands of dollars more expensive. The sound this engine makes is intoxicating. The exhaust sounds aggressive and like a race car. The sound of the induction from the triple 45mm carburetors is just as intoxicating. The engine has excellent throttle response through the RPM range. It was professionally tuned at LNA on an engine dyno. The oil gets regularly changed at least every other event. With the oil cooler and larger capacity oil pan, it holds around 9 quarts. The engine does drip some oil but not enough to not drive it or not pass tech inspection. Apparently the gasket on the oilpan is a foam type gasket so switching that to a cork one would help. Also, there looks to be a slight oil leak near the timing chain cover area which could be resealed at some point. In summer of 2015, new spark plug wires were installed and the spark plugs cleaned up and re-gapped. The coolant gets changed each year and checked each race. The water temperature and oil temperatures stay where they should. The oil pressure is excellent. The oil pressure gauge recently stopped working on me so I purchased a new one that needs to yet be installed. If someone really wanted, more power is available with this engine. LNA’s header yielded another 10 horsepower when they tried it out. Also, it was stated the setup has even further room to expand as some of the port work and other part choices were “mild”. Tens of more horsepower are available if someone was so inclined. The engine build was completed in 2012. The prior owner used this Z for Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) and had it at a few events, such as Road Atlanta and Sebring, since the engine had been installed. I have had this Z at a total of 5-6 track events in the Midwest like Road America, Blackhawk Farms Raceway, and Autobahn Country Club. Never have I or the previous owner ever had any engine issues. This engine is quite fresh yet and is quite the strong heart for this incredibly fun Z. Drivetrain: Datsun four speed manual transmission Centerforce Stage 2 clutch Stainless braided clutch line R200 rear end with 4.11 gearing Solid front differential mount Suspension & Brakes: Ground Control coil overs Upgraded springs (300 lb front, 275 rear) Tokico Illumina adjustable struts front and rear Ground Control front camber plates Corner balanced Suspension Techniques thicker front and rear anti-roll bars Suspension Techniques polyurethane end-links Energy Suspension polyurethane bushings throughout Wilwood Superlite four piston front calipers with 12” two piece rotors Wilwood Polymatrix A pads front Brake ducts and hoses Wilwood Dynalite two piston rear calipers with rear disc brakes Wilwood Polymatrix A pads rear Stainless braided brake lines Booster delete Wilwood separate front and rear brake master cylinders Wilwood brake bias adjuster Brake pressure/pedal feel adjuster Diamond Racing rims (16” x .5” front, 16” x 10.5” rear) Hoosier TD vintage bias ply racing slicks 24”x 8.5” front, 25.5” x 10” rear The four speed transmission and differential received fresh fluids within the past two months. The shifter has a nice tight feel, not loose and sloppy like some Z’s (due to the bushing on the shifter). The clutch is great and with absolutely no issues. The clutch is only a couple years old. The pedal feels good. The transmission performs as it should. Installed in spring of 2015 were new front and rear Tokico Illumina 5-way adjustable strut cartridges. At that same time, both the front and rear brake calipers were completely rebuilt with new seals and pistons installed. The front rotors were replaced at this time with new ones and new racing brake pads were installed at the front and rear with Wilwood Polymatrix A compound. The fluid was also changed out and ATE racing fluid was used. The brakes and new struts have two events on them. Notice there is tons of pad life left on the front and rear pads. The brakes perform extremely well on this Z. The pedal feel makes for very precise brake application. The bias and pressure can be adjusted as well. Brake as hard as you want. The brakes can take it and do so without fading. The suspension is set up very nicely. The strut and spring set up with the thicker anti-sway bars result in some very confident and well dialed in handling. The Hoosier TD tires currently on the car have no more than 1.5 hours on them and have plenty of life left for a few events. Theses racing slicks are great tires. The suspension and brake system is well sorted and maintained. The car feels very neutral. It should not need any significant attention or investment. It is a 1974 260Z. At this point with the current set up, from what I understand the main benefit of an early 240Z compared to a 260Z chassis is they are about 50 lbs lighter. The prior owner had this Z since 1992 and owned it in Florida which is where I picked it up from. The body has not been in any sort of significant accident on or off track. The critical areas are rock solid on this Z. The “frame rails” that run along the bottom sides of the engine bay, behind the front wheels, and where the torsion bars mount is rock solid! The rest of the underbody is great. There were the very typical small rust spots on the fronts of the floors. Also, there is some minor rusting at the battery tray. Other than those areas, this body is extremely solid. The rockers are great. The rest of the underbody is great. This Z is quite light weighing in at about 2,250 pounds. The fiberglass panels help in aiding the lightness and getting larger tires to fit. The IMSA “widebody” kit looks great and really makes this Z look mean and purposeful. This body kit is quite expensive to purchase and to ship! The paint is the original color to the car. For a race car, the paint is in very nice condition. It is glossy and aids in the presentation of the car. There is typical wear and marks as expected but nothing excessive. This Z gets quite the compliments for its visual appeal, really stands out at the track in a good way, and is something you can sit, stare at, and admire when in the garage. The front headlight buckets were made flush with the fenders, for aerodynamic purposes, and is somewhat noticeable but not distracting from the car. The rest of the sheetmetal (doors, roof, cowl, etc.) is quite straight. This Z has of course been stripped of any unnecessary parts. Vinyl window covers snap in for if there is bad weather. A proper certified roll cage has been installed. The rear section of the driver floor was modified to allow a lower center of gravity with the driver seat being lowered. The racing seat and harness keeps you planted. A driver window “net” is present. A passenger seat and harness is currently installed so you can scare your friends or family members on a ride. Other necessary racing equipment like a fire suppression system, power switch, and more are present and functioning. What is it like to drive? Picking one word to describe the driving experience of this Z would be intense. It is intense, but in a good way. It is an adrenaline fueled experience. All of your senses are active. The sound is intoxicating. The control and feel is very direct and not numb. Utmost concentration is needed to be precise and smooth. Modern cars on the track feel so different and are still tons of fun but with power steering, power brakes, anti-lock brakes, and etc. they can feel less involving and easier to drive. The vintage Z requires you to make it your priority. It does exactly as your inputs tell it to and is very rewarding to drive. The handling is quite neutral and confidence inspiring. There is no dangerous oversteer or annoying understeer. The brakes are everlasting and controllable with excellent firm pedal feel. This Z often gains tons of ground in the corners and has the ability to brake much later into the corner than most of what is on the track. Heel-toe shifting is easily achieved. Consistent lap times and smooth but fast driving are also achieved. The engine has plenty of torque to pull you out of turns and plenty of horsepower to keep on pulling. The car has a great combination of light weight but also power. This is a car that communicates very clearly up to the limit and is controllable when the limit has been exceeded. I have owned a plethora of sports cars ranging from V8 RX-7, Porsche 964, 930, Lotus Turbo Esprits, Ferrari 308’s, 348, & etc. Compared to everything I have driven, this vintage Z offered the most exciting and fun ride. Only until recently will I say one car was more fun to drive and that was a Ferrari 458 Spider. Race cars in general, especially vintage ones, give such an exciting experience that stock sports cars cannot. This Z is a true driver’s car. This Z is competitive. With my little on-track experience and as an amateur driver, my second time ever at Road America Elkhart Lake I managed consistent 2:46-2:48 lap times. My instructor’s first time driving it there he was able to get 2:43 and felt multiple more seconds could be shaved off. At Autobahn Country Club Full in Joliet, IL, my first time there ever I managed consistent 2:49-2:52 lap times. My second/third times on track at Blackhawk Farms Raceway I managed consistent 1:23-1:25 lap times. I know it depends much on the driver and set up/tires but for comparison and context, when driven properly this Z will pass upgraded Cayman S, 997 911, Lotus Elise, C5 Vettes, Audi “S” models, modded BMW E46 M3’s, and plenty of other significantly more expensive, some higher horsepower, and all more technologically advance vehicles on these tracks all day. What this vintage Z can do is impressive. Most important of all though, it is an absolute blast to drive. Conclusion: This Z is a great way to get into rack day events whether it is competitive vintage racing or track days for fun. Datsun Z cars are about as economical as it gets for a track car. Parts are relatively inexpensive, plentiful, and many parts easily found on the local Craigslist. There of course is a ton of support for these cars from numerous online forums to numerous Z racing specialists scattered across the country. Historically, the Datsun Z car has been very successful racing. It is an excellent and competitive platform. This Z has a highly desired and extremely well built stroker engine. The rest of the car from suspension to brakes is well set up. As the Z sits right now, I would personally be ready to take it to the track and not have any concerns. It is good to go the way it is. I am passing this Z on to its next care taker due to having to simplify my life and find more time somehow (ex: full time career with an overload, in addition attempting to grow my own small business at the same time, multiple other street sports cars to maintain and enjoy, and the wife likes some attention too). Any questions that you have, please do not hesitate to contact me. To make things easier for you, at a competitive rate I can consider personally transporting the Z and parts to you in my enclosed trailer. This vehicle is located in Sussex, WI 53089.
