Up for auction is an ultra-rare 1988 Porsche 911 Carrera Club Sport. This Club Sport is one of just 22 Club Sports imported to North America in 1988 and retains its rare factory dark blue color. It comes with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity and was featured in an article in Excellence Magazine in September 2012 (read article for more details on the history and build). Although this is a genuine CS, it is not for the purists; this car has been thoughtfully and thoroughly modified in the direction Porsche intended, albeit with care taken to minimize any irreversible changes. Already a lightened version of the Carrera when it left Stuttgart, this particular CS, at 2470 lbs with fuel, is almost 300 lbs lighter than the standard Carrera and some 500 lbs lighter than the Turbo. Power is up handsomely too versus stock, thanks to the very professional, factory-appearing transplant (by Rothsport) of a 3.8 liter VarioRam motor out of a 993. The setup develops 321hp, resulting in some astonishing acceleration in this featherweight car. So, yes, it is not a stock Club Sport...it is better! Sounds better, runs better, handles and stops better, etc. It can be your track day/DE weapon, collectible street car, or with some updated wheels and tires and re-installation of some of the factory panels (see the list of original parts included below), it could be your version of an Outlaw or Singer. Take a look at the parts list below and you'll see best-of-the-best stuff; there is easily over $150k invested in this car to make it fast, reliable, and safe. If you're in the market for a budget 911 track car, this one is not for you. If, however, you want a well-integrated, well-sorted and safe car, professionally built with the best of everything and using a highly collectible Club Sport as its base, then this is the car for you. What is a Carrera Club Sport? Designed for the enthusiast, Porsche made every effort to eliminate every unnecessary item to create, in the Club Sport, the purest example of the 911 since the original RS. From the factory, the Club Sport was equipped as follows: no fog lights, manual sport seats, roll up windows, manual controls for the ventilation system (no A/C), no central locking, no rear seats, no sound proofing materials (except on ceiling and engine), no lock on trunk release, no passenger sun visor, and no jacket hooks. The CS was lowered by the factory and featured stiffer Bilstein shock absorbers and slightly larger wheels and tires. The original 3.2 liter engines were blueprinted during assembly and otherwise slightly improved with revised DME, new air filter, and hollow inlet valves. The red line was raised from 6,300 rpm to 6,850 rpm although the hp rating was unchanged. Porsche made 340 Club Sports worldwide during their 1988-89 production run, and imported only 29 of those to the US. In 1988, those 22 cars sent to the US received consecutive serial numbers. Simply put, the 1988-89 Carrera Club Sport was a 2.7 RS for the 1980s and they have already become very collectible, with pristine examples selling for well north of $200k. With the incredible increases in values for rare and collectible air-cooled Porsches, it very well might be the time to return this car to stock CS form, although I would recommend that the new owner enjoy the driving perfection of the car as it is before making that decision. Still, with relatively little effort, this modified CS could be put back to stock-appearing, while retaining the exceptionally well integrated Rothsport 3.8 liter VarioRam powerhouse. The 3.8 was upgraded with all new race grade pistons, rods, bolts, springs, valves, gaskets, rings, etc. When I purchased this car in mid-2014, it had covered only a few miles since a full pre-purchase inspection in March 2013 at 26,577 miles (current mileage is 26,842) by Gerber Motorsport of Seattle, including leak down/compression check. I can email that report to anyone interested, but suffice to say the car was deemed "a wonderful example of the highly sought after Club Sport variant...with no reason to pass on this vehicle." Compression was 165 psi exactly from all six cylinders and leakdown was 2-6%. It is an extremely crisp, tight machine in every way: it handles beautifully, the brakes are powerful, and the exhaust note is pure air-cooled Porsche magic. It makes a great noise and will put a smile on your face! I encourage you to watch this recent driving video; as you can see, this car remains imminently street-able despite the track-bred modifications. The original owner of this car was obviously not happy with the performance of the standard Club Sport and embarked on an open checkbook journey to modify and improve this CS in the direction intended by the factory. The major work was carried out by well known Porsche performance shop Rothsport (Jeff Gamroth, who personally owned this car for several years as well). Below is a partial list of what's been done... Details: - Rothsport 993 3.8L VarioRam motor built to Euro RS spec - Mahle pistons with temperature head sensors - 993 supersport Custom ground camshaft - Oversized intake and exhaust valves - Race valve springs w/ titanium spring retainers - Ported dual plug heads - Custom ECU reprogramming; optimized fuel and timing maps for 3.8L RS spec engine - 321.3 HP, 280.2 lb-ft of torque - 993 VarioRam intake assembly with harness and ECU, for maximum HP and torque - "Custom 1” race headers - Lightweight flywheel - Quadratrac rear axles - Flowmaster stainless steel muffler, with heat shield - Safety Devices roll cage with door bars, window net, and camera mount - Holbert brake-cooling system - Deeper front spoiler - Kevlar RS race seats (8 lbs each) - Schroth harnesses - RSR door panels and RS pulls - RSR rear wing with Gurney lip - Composite, reversible 964 RSR body kit - Momo quick release steering wheel - Tow hook - Smart Racing sway bars - Strut tower brace - Shift light (velcro'd on; no holes in dash) - Differential cooler - Dual fender-mounted oil coolers - Electric cut-off switch - Heater delete - G50 with short gears (158 mph at 7200 rpm) - Transmission cooler - Front clear bra - 993 Turbo brakes with cross drilled rotors (Big Red kit) - Lighter fiberglass pieces replaced the stock bumpers, sills, mirrors, and decklid - 17 inch HRE wheels - Fire extinguisher system - Fuel cell (17 gallon) - JRZ/Moton double-adjustable dampers - Billet aluminum Rothsport shifter - New Braille racing battery (2015) Original Parts and other stuff included with the car: - Original front blue CS valance (non fog light, CS-only) w/ splitter - Original blue rear bumper w/ extensions - Original blue leather steering wheel - Original fuel tank (satin finish CS-only) - Original CS tach (higher rpm redline, CS-only) - Original blue steel hood w/ paint code labels - Original blue steel decklid w/o Carrera tail - Original center console - Original ash tray - Original smuggler's box cover - Original copy of the September 2012 issue of Excellence - Porsche COA The original CS seats, in Marine Blue, are pristine but still in the possession of a prior owner (i.e. they are not included in this auction). The prior owner was not interested in selling them as of last year, but I will pass his contact info on to the winning bidder who may have better luck. The car comes with Racetech racing seats, as pictured. Condition: This Club Sport was used the way Porsche intended, on the track. It is modified and has seen its share of track and DE days, but was never raced. It is an exceptionally tight car. There are some stone chips here and there, but the car was never in any accidents and retains its original paint except for the later 964 front and rear bolt on bumper caps, which were color matched. The original Club Sport fender script remains in place. The Yokohama tires are past their prime and should be replaced if any serious performance driving is to be done. There's some road rash and a crack on the lower edge of the front splitter (see pix). This is a streetable track car, although whether it will pass inspection at your local DMV is at your risk. It runs perfectly: great clutch and shifter action, no overheating, starts and idles perfectly, strong oil pressure, with great power and braking. Recent PPI (within 300 miles) confirms sound mechanicals. The car is clean, but could probably use a professional detailing. You found it! This is a very nice 1999 BMW M3 Convertible, that except for the radio and rims, is not really molested or modified as other M3's of this genre are. The BMW is in great mechanical shape with no issues. The 3.2L engine starts right up and runs beautifully with no problems. There are no maintenance reminder lights or check engine lights on. The 5 speed manual transmission shifts in and out of every gear with no worn synchro issues, and the clutch grabs nice and low signifying plenty of life left on the clutch. All of the power options work including the air conditioning, or if youd like to cool down fast, just drop the convertible top and cruise around topless. The interior has some signs of wear and tear on the leather but it is not that bad and is to be expected for a M3 of this age and miles.
