This 1968 Chevrolet El Camino has been built to further blur the lines that separate vehicles: performance, great looks, and a lot of comfort. The bodywork is nicely finished and the workmanship is shown to great effect thanks to the beautiful metallic red paint, which appears to have been borrowed from a late-model color chart. These vehicles typically led harder lives than your average Chevelle, and finding a clean one, let along investing enough to bring it to this condition, is tough. Gaps are good and a lot of time was invested in getting the body panels this straight when it was repainted about eight years ago. The bed was refinished with Line-X spray-in bedliner, but has seen some work since then, which is perfectly OK, since that's what these cars are all about. Trim is bright and well maintained, with good chrome on the bumpers, a stock grille, and the trim around the bed is very nice, with no obvious dings or damage from use. I applaud the builder who was able to resist the temptation to make an SS clone, and instead presents a clean Elky with no stories that's ready to rumble. The black bench seat interior is almost entirely new and looks very fresh. Carpets, headliner, and door panels are reproduction pieces that look good and fit right, and the bench seat makes it feel spacious in the cab. The dash is original, with a fat three-spoke steering wheel framing the factory gauges, which have nice, clear lenses and sharp markings on their faces. An under-dash A/C unit was a popular period addition and works well thanks to a modern compressor under the hood and there's a newer Kenwood AM/FM/cassette stereo head unit in the dash. Tilt the seats forward and you'll discover a pair of powerful speakers in custom enclosures that sound great. The engine is the original 307 cubic inch V8, which was rebuilt about 15 years ago and still runs extremely well. It's got the usual upgrades including an Edelbrock intake manifold, 4-barrel carburetor, and long-tube headers to help build torque. The engine bay is sanitary and clean, with a few dress-up items such as those chrome valve covers and air cleaner and bright Chevy Orange engine enamel on the block itself. The transmission is a PowerGlide 2-speed automatic, likely the car's original transmission, and it snaps to attention when you dip into the throttle. There's a recent dual exhaust system that gives it a great performance sound and the 10-bolt rear end feels like it has street-friendly gears inside. Handsome polished wheels stuff the wheel wells, wearing big 255/50/17 Kumho high performance radials. With single-family ownership for the past 25 years, this is a good, clean El Camino that's ready to enjoy. Turn on the A/C, crank up your favorite tunes, and enjoy the ride. Call it a truck, call it a car, either way you're going to love this El Camino. Where else could you go to get a car that could be outfitted as anything from a bare-bones workhorse to a sophisticated gentleman's express such as this handsome Cortez Silver Elky? Recently refinished and powered by a stout small block, this El Camino delivers big. As I said, Cortez Silver is the color, and it looks fantastic on the El Camino's trim bodywork, especially when paired with a matching black vinyl top and SS stripes. Maybe it spent a previous life working on a ranch somewhere, but since the bodywork was done, it's been pampered and beautifully maintained, with a great shine that stands up to scrutiny. A cowl induction hood was added, probably at the same time the truck/car was painted, and the stripes use the factory pattern for a very correct look. Other dress-up items include a matching black tonneau cover, which hides a nicely preserved bed that's been carpeted to essentially create the world's biggest trunk. Chrome is shiny, the grille is in great shape and wears a correct SS badge, and the tailgate shows none of the usual bumps and bruises you'd expect from a vehicle that has worked for a living. This is a really nice car, er, truck. The interior is your basic black, but GM gave it an upscale look with handsome stitching on the seat covers. It's possible that the upholstery is original, and if that's the case it's in fantastic shape with just a few minor signs of use and age. The carpets are surely new, because they just look too good to be 43 years old, and the door panels are crisply rendered. The original instrument panel handles the basics, but there's also a big tach mounted on the steering column, and thanks to a column shifter, you can squeeze three abreast in a pinch. The original radio is gone, replaced by a modern AM/FM/CD unit that sounds great in the compact cab and if you need some extra indoor storage for your gear, there's a bit of room behind the seat that's actually quite useful. The powertrain is familiar, a 350 cubic inch V8 and TH400 3-speed automatic transmission, and that means you don't have to worry about having some fun. The engine itself got a once-over with a coat of Chevy Orange and a few chrome dress-up items make it look sharp. A dual reservoir master cylinder has been recently installed, and power steering and brakes were standard equipment on the El Camino so it's easy to handle with a full load out back. There's also a new alternator plus an upgraded Edelbrock intake manifold and 4-barrel carburetor, so it's plenty entertaining on the road. Underneath, it's quite original but shows well after a lifetime someplace warm, and a recent Flowmaster dual exhaust system gives it that muscle car sound. Handsome 14-inch SS wheels probably aren't original but they look awesome with fat 215/65/15 front and 275/60/15 rear white-letter radials wrapped around them. If a more refined look is more your speed, this El Camino has all the right ingredients. With a great all-of-a-piece look, it's just right to enjoy without worries, and maybe you'll even put it to work now and then. For starters, it's got a numbers-matching V8 drivetrain plus factory A/C, an awesome color combination, and a very reasonable sticker price. Looking through our records, we haven't sold many '68's, and that suggests that they're a bit more rare than the other years. For many enthusiasts, the '68's pure design has a clean, chiseled look and this one is no exception. The paint was done last year and it was changed from gray to bright red and the choice was a good one. Finish quality is quite good with a deep shine that could probably even be taken up a notch with a professional color sand and buff, but even as it sits, it'll stand out at the local cruise night. We always like the honesty of a car that wears factory sheetmetal, and this one even offers a stock flat hood and no SS stripes, so it's a pretty good representation of what you may have seen on the streets back in the day. The chrome bumpers are in good shape, the original emblems were reinstalled when the paint was dry, and the bed was treated to a very tidy bedliner so it's ready to work or play and looks great doing either one. The black vinyl interior is also pretty stock, complete with a bench seat that makes the Elky a 3-passenger vehicle. From behind the wheel, it's the same experience as a Chevelle, with an attractive 3-spoke steering wheel and big legible gauges in a wrap-around instrument panel. You'll note that this one wears new seat covers with textured seating surfaces and silver accents that helps break up the ocean of black inside. It also offers crisply detailed door panels, recent rubber mat (this was a truck, after all), and options like factory A/C, which is fully functional thanks to R134a refrigerant inside. It also offers the original AM radio, which also works properly and there's an FM unit neatly stashed under the dash so you're not limited to whatever they're playing on AM these days. With a bit of storage behind the seat this Elky is actually usable daily and it drives so well, you'll never complain about the ride. The 307 cubic inch V8 is this car's original, numbers-matching engine that was rebuilt and upgraded with things like an aftermarket aluminum intake manifold and 4-barrel carburetor and electronic ignition system. It's still very much Chevrolet under the hood, with satin black inner fenders and a bright Chevy Orange block, with a set of chrome valve covers and an open-element air cleaner to spruce things up a bit. It starts easily and idles well, and with good V8 torque it's easy to drive. The 2-speed PowerGlide automatic transmission is also original equipment and there's a 10-bolt rear with highway-friendly gears out back, so it's pleasant on the highway with the A/C cranking away. A nice-sounding dual exhaust system has just the right V8 sound and the underside is shockingly clean, suggesting someone put in a lot of time and effort here. The front end has been rebuilt so it tracks straight and feels tight and it wears fresh Rally wheels with flat hubcaps, trim rings, and big 215/70/15 white-letter radials all around. Documented with maintenance records, owner's manual, and some title papers, this is a very affordable El Camino with a good pedigree and a great look. Vehicle Information VIN: 136801B239093 Stock: 1908-ATL Mileage: 1,005 Color: Silver Trans: Automatic Engine: MPG: Drivetrain: Description This 1971 Chevrolet El Camino is 1/3 pickup truck, 1/3 Chevelle, and 1/3 Corvette, making for a very entertaining and a surprisingly practical hot rod. And we continue to be amazed by how much performance you can get for your dollar with El Caminos, because if this was actually a Chevelle, it would cost twice as much. Nevada Silver is an awesome color on an El Camino, giving it a slick style that belies the pickup truck practicality hiding within. The finish is in good order with a few signs of use but if youre really feeling ambitious and need to take it up a level, itll look awesome with a professional wet sand and buff. But in the meantime it looks great going down the road and when you show up for local cruise nights, folks will have a hard time ignoring this car. Black SS stripes and a cowl induction hood certainly help in that regard, and anything with SS badges probably deserves respect on the street. Sharing the Chevelles sheetmetal probably helps in the looks department, and there are a lot of guys, myself included, who prefer the single headlight setup of the 71s. For practical purposes, the bed was covered with spray-in bedliner material, so its still able to work a little bit on weekends, and sparkling chrome always looks awesome against silver paint, making this car look up-to-date and sleek. Theres more shared DNA inside, where youll find modern bucket seats out of a late-model, complete with SS embroidery on the seat backs. Slide in behind the squared-off wheel that isnt out-of-place in this truck/car and key it up, watching the dash alight with red Dakota Digital instruments stuffed into the original instrument panel. The headliner and carpet are new and it sure looks like the door panels were replaced at some point, because theyre just too nice to be 42 years old, and theres a factory center console complete with horseshoe shifter, which looks as cool here as it does in the Chevelle. An impressive stereo system includes an AM/FM/CD head unit powering 6x9 speakers and a built-in subwoofer behind the seats. The equipment is in place for A/C, too, so if you like to keep things cool, it shouldnt be a major chore to get it back online. Open the hood and youll see where the Corvette part comes in. Thats a 1996 Corvette LT1 V8, which makes a nice, round 300 horsepower thanks to fuel injection and computer controls. No El Camino ever ran this well in 1971 and after you try it on the road youll wonder why anyone would need a big block. Installation is neat enough to make some folk believe it was built that way at the factory and theres no need for flash when you have folks doing double-takes the moment they see it. That same Corvette also donated its 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission, so this truck/car is a fantastic highway cruiser that just loafs at highway speeds, yet feels snappy around town thanks to 3.73 gears on a Posi inside the 12-bolt rear. Four wheel disc brakes were added, which is probably a smart thing given this Elkys performance potential, and a custom 3-inch exhaust system with Flowmasters makes for one heck of a soundtrack. Shiny American Racing wheels look right and carry 235/55/17 tires that are the right size to fill the wheel wells without looking oversized. The most successful resto-mods are those that seamlessly blend old and new, and nothing succeeds like putting four decades of technology to work on your vintage hardware. Call today! Bright red, big block, bucket seats and restoration receipts, what more do you need? I could probably stop right there and the phone would still start ringing immediately, because this is obviously a super nice Elky. Just looking down the bright, shiny flanks of this El Camino, you can see that the money was spent wisely, because the sheetmetal is straight and the paint looks right on the 50-year-old truck/car. These can be challenging vehicles to restore if they've been used hard and put away wet, but this one sure looks like it lived the good life someplace warm. Panel fit and body gaps are about what you would have gotten when it was new back in 1966, and it's always nice to see a Chevrolet muscle car that hasn't been dressed up in fake SS badges or stripes. In back, it's still ready to help out around the homestead with a spray-in bedliner floor that has been painted to match the bodywork, as well as a protective panel over the tailgate. Chrome and trim is good to very good throughout, with nice bumpers and excellent stainless trim, particularly around the pickup bed where it usually takes a beating, but this one remains quite nice. Buckets seats in an El Camino is always a pleasant surprise, and the black chairs in this bright red pickup have been restored using correct seat covers that give it a very upscale look. New dash trim surrounds a comprehensive set of factory instruments, with a wide speedometer right in the center of the two-tier dashboard. A sporty two-spoke woodgrained steering wheel seems like the right choice in this car, and even the factory AM radio is still living in the dash. Carpets, door panels, and even the headliner are in very good condition, all thoroughly brought back during the restoration. The center console houses the optional factory clock in its own neat little pod, as well as the chrome T-handle shifter for the TH350 3-speed automatic transmission living behind the big block. Looking at this very nice interior, that price tag looks even more appealing, doesn't it? The big block V8 was borrowed from a '71 or '72 Monte Carlo, but looks right at home in the El Camino's engine bay. Ostensibly it's called a 396, but it's actually a CLB-code 402, which adds a few extra cubes and even GM was still calling it a 396. Regardless, it looks quite stock wearing its Chevy Orange paint, chrome valve covers, and reproduction stickers that claim 350 horsepower, suggesting it was built to L34 specs. What we know for certain is that it runs superbly and moves the relatively lightweight El Camino with genuine authority thanks to a Rochester 4-barrel carb and long-tube headers for a nice, fat torque curve. Those headers feed a recent dual exhaust system with discreet chrome tips under the rear bumper, and the system flanks a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission and a 10-bolt rear end. The undercarriage is quite clean and tidy, reinforcing the idea that this car came from someplace warm. 14-inch Cragar wheels with 215/75/14 Cocker Redline radials complete the look. This is an awful lot of big block Chevy muscle for a bargain price. Like so many other cars, it's always better to buy someone else's finished project than undertake it yourself, and this Elky is proof.
