A wonderfully wacky take on the "business" coupe? Either way, this 1936 Chevrolet coupe truck is rare, fun, and delightfully unusual. It actually came about as a result of wanting to cater to farmers who needed a vehicle that would get them to church on Sunday but to the market on Monday, and it was offered both as a production vehicle and as a dealer conversion, with this one being number 345 of only 3183 actually built by Chevrolet. And yes, it's pretty darned cool. The restoration is older, but you can't deny the fun of watching everyone do a double-take when they notice the pickup bed hanging out the trunk opening. You can tell this is a production-line car, not a conversion, because there's no lip around the trunk opening. Bright red was a great choice for a vehicle like this, a traditional pickup truck color that's perfect for the stylish coupe as well. There are signs of use and age, but the car has a wonderful patina that works rather well and we wouldn't change a thing. It has obviously led a decent life, because it wasn't worked to death and the original parts are all in great shape, suggesting that it never worked particularly hard when it was in service. Accessory fender skirts dress it up a bit, as do the jaunty yellow pinstripes, chrome bumpers, single side-mounted spare tire. This one also sports dual taillights for safety, a rather unusual back-up light, and a set of fog lamps up front, so it's well-outfitted for just about anything you'd like to do. You'll even note there's a step on the rear bumper, much like one for a rumble seat, which allows better access to the bed. The interior is standard 2-passenger business coupe, with a wide bench seat and decent room for two folks on a road trip. The upholstery is faithful to the original and uses a button-tufted pattern that is exactly right for 1936. Rubber mats are a nod to the truck/car's utility and humble origins, as is the simple painted instrument panel. It does offer a set of handsome cream-colored gauges with an auxiliary gauge under the dash and an aftermarket turn signal setup for safety. The big steering wheel makes it easy to maneuver in town and with a cowl vent and vent windows, it stays comfortable inside even on warm days. There is no radio, of course, but there is a heater that is now bypassed, since it was always on and probably isn't needed for duty today. The engine is the same 216 cubic inch inline-six that Chevy fans have called the "Stovebolt" for decades. It's smooth and torquey and offers performance that's plenty lively out on the open road. It was surely rebuilt at some point and has a great six-cylinder growl that's like the soundtrack from your favorite old movie. Up top there's an original oil bath air cleaner and 1-barrel carburetor, and it wears proper Chevy corporate gray engine enamel for a functional look. The electrical system is still six volts and by 1936, all GM's transmissions offered synchromesh, so the 3-speed manual shifts neatly. It's happy at about 50 MPH, and yes, you can still put that bed to work on weekends and get more attention than anyone else in Home Depot history. There's a new gas tank out back, but the rest of the underside is pretty stock and has some age on it, but that only means you shouldn't be afraid to drive it. Flashy 17-inch Firestone whitewalls on painted artillery wheels are a great choice for the handsome little trucklet. Rare, fun, and just plain cool, this Chevy has a neat story to tell. And with an estimated 20 or so remaining, you're practically guaranteed to never see another one at a show. This 1952 Chevy coupe, for example, was completed just a few years ago and includes upgrades like a 327 cubic inch V8 and an overdrive transmission without losing its original look. So why waste months or years building yours when this one is available for such a reasonable price? Put your own spin on it and get out there and start having fun! You're in luck with this Chevy, because the work was quite well done, which means very clean sheetmetal that has a classic early '50s look that still hadn't joined the jet age. A few body tweaks make it look unique, from the nosed and decked hood to all the shaved trim, it definitely shows the work of a talented craftsman. The finish is quite good, with a depth and shine that comes from careful prep and plenty of time invested on the back side with color sanding, buffing, and plenty of TLC since it was finished. Basic black works well on any car from the early '50s, and this one has an honest look that will certainly fool a lot of folks into thinking it's purely stock, which was probably the builder's intention all along. After all, why mess with a good thing? And the good news is that all the chrome remains in excellent shape and the stainless has been buffed up to look great, making this one smartly dressed little coupe. The gray cloth interior offers a nice contrast to the black bodywork, and nobody can argue that it doesn't look period-correct and it should wear like iron. Factory bench seats front and rear offer great comfort and support for long hauls, and pleated door panels continue the factory vibe. The dashboard got smothered in a custom stainless fascia with the instruments being modern dials that have a distinctly vintage look. There's an under-dash A/C unit that seems to fit like it was born there, and a modern tilt steering column uses a leather-wrapped wheel from a late-model. In the center of the dash there's a modern AM/FM/CD stereo head unit and a custom-built wood center console is there to hold your drinks. Pop the trunk and you'll find a very original-looking cargo bay, right down to the rubber mat and original spare wheel with bias-ply tire. Plenty of power is on tap, courtesy of a mid-60s 327 cubic inch V8, and that's horsepower that'll never go out of style. Lots of chrome and billet aluminum, an Edelbrock intake and carb, and an HEI ignition system give it modern looks and performance, and things like the alternator and A/C compressor make it reliable. Smooth inner fenders and firewall provide a great backdrop for the engine itself, and someone obviously spent some time making the plumbing and wiring look neat. The undercarriage is clean, anchored by a 700R4 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission and the stock rear end, while the front suspension is pretty stock with a Saginaw power steering setup. Steel wheels with wire wheelcovers from a later Caprice Classic complete the look and are wrapped in 235/75/15 whitewall radials all around. A fun, reliable cruiser that has a ton of eyeball appeal. It's also affordable and ready to go. Why wait? Very original-looking on the outside, a long list of upgrades underneath, an ideal combination. Turn the key, hit the road, and start having fun in one of the best '30s coupes we've seen in a long time. GM's mid-30s coupes were the talk of the industry, particularly with the all-new "turret top" that eliminated the cloth inserts that were formerly common. Sleek curves, some budding aerodynamics, and that dramatic slash through the door make the Chevy easy to spot and none of the original sheetmetal was altered during the build. In fact, it was rather nicely restored about five years ago, and while it's no longer perfect, it has a great look that stays under the radar until you look at it a little more closely. The charcoal gray finish is something that would have been on the original 1938 color chart and it's highlighted by a red beltline molding that really makes this car pop. A few bits of trim have been shaved, most notably the trunk handle, but details like the original taillights and distinctive bumpers remain in place, giving this car a very strong sense of identity. There's also a beautiful chrome grille up front, a pair of accessory side mirrors, and ornate hood grilles that are as beautiful as they are functional. The interior has been recently freshened, starting with a pair of handsome leather bucket seats with burgundy cloth inserts that match the exterior color scheme. There are also matching gray carpets, simple door panels, and a nice blend of original and modern components. The dash is beautifully finished with custom billet aluminum inserts, with a set of TPI Tech gauges in front of the driver and a polished glove box lid for the passenger, behind which you'll find the Pioneer AM/FM/CD stereo head unit. Vintage Air supplied the A/C system, which uses clean billet vents for a very integrated look and a Lokar shifter preserves the old-fashioned feel behind the wheel. And speaking of the wheel, it's a handsome banjo-style piece that looks right and it's fitted to a polished tilt column. Push a button and the trunk pops, and inside you'll find the battery and plenty of space for your gear. You don't need to go radical to have a great-running rod, and this Chevy uses a simple 350 cubic inch V8 with a handful of upgrades to make it competent. An Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor and Performer intake manifold help build horsepower and an HEI ignition system reliably lights the fires. It's functional rather than showy, but a few chrome dress-up pieces make it worthwhile to show off under the hood and a proper detail will really make it sparkle. Upgrades like power steering and power disc brakes come from a modern front subframe and the transmission is a 700R4 4-speed automatic overdrive so it's an effortless cruiser. A great-sounding dual exhaust system has a bit of an edge so it's definitely a hot rod, but it quiets down on the highway so you can take long trips with ease. And to reinforce the traditional look, steel wheels with hubcaps and trim rings are wrapped in wide whitewall radials that look pretty correct on the vintage Chevy. You couldn't come close to building this car for the asking price. Built with a lot of respect for the original design, it delivers a modern driving experience with a grate vintage look. Streetside Classics strives to perform extensive visual inspections on all vehicles we represent but we do not disassemble vehicles or components for inspection purposes and therefore it is always possible that there is hidden damage that is not readily apparent. All vehicles are sold AS-IS with no warranties expressed or implied. WE WELCOME INTERNATIONAL BUYERS As an international buyer, it is as easy to purchase a vehicle from us as it is for any domestic buyer. With a bunch of cool retro touches, it's a bargain-priced cruiser that eschews all the clichs and delivers traditional hot-rod fun that would be a deal at twice the price. Fat-fendered rods have always been about comfort as much as speed, and this car's generous proportions make it an ideal long-distance hauler. The '48 Chevy was a nicely proportioned car that was popular with guys looking for some speed, and the monochromatic red paint job is a familiar look that'll never get old. The body itself is quite straight, and just finding one of these that looks this good can be a challenge, particularly with that fender line that extends into the front doors, which was introduced in 1942. The paint was done a few years ago and shows a few signs of use and some minor blemishes, but at this price, it will have everyone thinking you got a major bargain. It has been shaved and cleaned up in the traditional style, and things like the grille, headlight, rings, and bumpers were painted to match the body, adding to its sleek look. A few bright pieces, particularly the cool hood ornament and trunk handle, add some much-appreciated contrast. Even the original split windshield remains in place, giving the car a delightful old-fashioned hot-rod vibe that everyone will appreciate. On a car like this, there is no better choice than a white interior with all the traditional styling tricks included. The original bench seat has been upholstered in light-colored vinyl that chooses simplicity over flash, with subtle patterns stitched into the seating surfaces. The door panels are upholstered in matching vinyl with traditional pleats, and all the factory hardware and window moldings remain. Even the original dash is pretty much as it was in 1948, with the instruments clustered to the left of a larger speedometer, which is mirrored by the clock over in front of the passenger. A tilt column carries a wood-rimmed Grant GT steering wheel and A/C has been neatly installed under the dash. And remember, this is a business coupe, which means no back seat but cavernous storage that more than doubles the already spacious trunk's carrying capacity. For some extra cool points, there's a 350 cubic inch V8 under the pointed hood, a very user-friendly choice for guys who like to drive. Dressed in bright chrome, the silky smooth V8 looks functional and well-sorted, with good service access and traditional horsepower-builders like long-tube headers and an HEI ignition system. Heads from a 305 bump the compression up to a cackling 11:1, so it needs premium but moves like it's got an extra 30 cubes on tap. Underneath, the chassis is solid and clean, with a Camaro front clip that includes power steering and disc brakes, while the rear end is a rugged 10-bolt with a TH350 3-speed automatic in-between swapping the gears. Handsome 15-inch chrome wheels have an old-school Torque Thrust look and carry 205/60/15 front and 225/70/15 rear blackwall radials. This little Chevy is an awesome entry-level cruiser that will generate a ton of attention and more smiles per mile than just about anything else in our showroom.
