HAMILTON HAD THE VETTE TOWED BACK TO COMMUNITY CHEVROLET. THE #8 CYLINDER WAS DAMAGED AND THE ENGINE WAS SMOKING BADLY. GM RECOMMENDED A REPLACEMENT BLOCK AND WORK ORDER #B3472 CONFIRMS THAT THIS VETTE RECEIVED A NEW BLOCK. HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU HEARD THAT A VETTE, PARTICULLARLY AN L71, HAS RECEIVED A CE BLOCK; BUT, YOU WONDER IF THAT REALLY WAS THE CASE. HERE, THERE'S PROOF. FAST FORWARD TO THE SECOND OWNER, JOHN T. LUCAS OF ORANGE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA. IT’S 1983 AND MR. LUCAS WANTS MORE POWER AND SPEED. THE ORIGINAL BLOCK IS LONG GONE SO THERE IS NO ISSUE REGARDING “ENGINE MATCHING NUMBERS”. AINT GOING TO HAPPEN!!! SO, MR. LUCAS TRADES IN THE EXISTING ENGINE FOR A SUPER RARE L88!! I HAVE THE ORIGINAL SALES AGREEMENT WHEREIN MR. LUCAS, ON NOVEMBER 29, 1983 PURCHASED A “COMPLETE” L88, 427 CHEVROLET ENGINE FROM A 1969 CORVETTE, WITH STEEL HEADS, A NEW L88 CAM AND HEAVY DUTY STEEL TIMING CHAIN. THE ENTIRE ENGINE WAS THEN SENT OFF TO DAVE’S ENGINE SHOP IN GARDEN GROVE, CALIFORNIA FOR REBUILDING AND INSTALLATION. AGAIN, I WAS NOT A PARTY TO THESE TRANSACTIONS, SO I MUST CONFESS THAT I’M TAKING THE DOCUMENTATION AT ITS “FACE VALUE”! I’VE NEVER TAKEN THE ENGINE APART OR EVEN OUT OF THE CAR TO VALIDATE THE WORK; BUT, I DO HAVE THE DOCUMENTATION FROM THE TIME PERIOD. MY VETTE HAS BENEFITTED FROM A COMPLETE AND FULL RESTORATION AND I DO HAVE THE RECEIPTS. ONLY 2000 MILES HAVE BEEN PUT ONTO THE ODOMETER SINCE THE MOTOR AND TRANNY WERE REBUILT. THE VETTE HAS SEEN LESS THAN 700 MILES SINCE 2003! SO WHAT ARE YOU LEFT WITH? A REAL DEAL 1967 L71 BIG BLOCK CONVERTIBLE CORVETTE IN FASHIONABLE MARINA BLUE WITH FULL, ORIGINAL DOCUMENTATION, STILL POSSESSING ALL OPTIONS SAVE THE ORIGINAL ENGINE AND NOW RUNNING A 427 ENGINE WITH L88 INTERNALS.
