Does it sound too good to be true? Then just keep reading about this 1955 Buick Roadmaster Riviera. Buick just seemed to have the best sense of premium style in the 1950s, and they were hardly subtle about it. The range-topping Roadmaster did it the best with painted fender wells, golden trim, more fender portholes, and those Dagmars that were truly sex appeal on wheels. It only gets better in the Riviera specification that helped emphasize the dip line in the doors by making this coupe body a pillarless hardtop. But as special as any Roadmaster Riviera is, this one has plenty of custom touches to hint at its more modern appeal. It starts with the Copper Metallic paint that's sandwiched in between the two areas of white. Plenty of Buicks of this era has the tri-tone paint effect but the precious metal shines on this one with the kind of luster you can only get from a modern and professional application. Even the door handles have been painted this color for a smoother appearance. But that's not the only place the chrome has been removed. A custom rear bumper has been created that is painted the car's colors and fits sung to the body for a sportier appearance that helps highlight the jet-inspired taillights. Lovers of brightwork still don't miss out in this Roadmaster thanks to the large American Racing wheels. The inside coordinates with the outside perfectly where the same paint scheme continues on the dash, and there's a copper vinyl used on the seats and door panels. The seats look quite new and feel as supple as leather. They have a breathable pattern that you'd expect on a BMW, but instead are applied to benches large enough to fit the whole family. The driver gets a three-spoke Nardi-like steering wheel (a hint at this custom Buick's more sporting nature) and beyond that is a stylish set of full gauges. In fact, Buick's design team really hit a home run with the entire dash. The appearance combines sporting elements like machined panels with elegant dials for a distinctively upscale appearance that still feels premium today. It's the perfect place to house everything from the factory AM radio to the power window controls. Instead of the old Nailhead V8 that came under the hood in '55, this one sports a 455 cubic-inch big block borrowed from an Electra that's a couple of decades younger than this couple. It's topped with a Moroso air cleaner and Rochester Quadra Jet four-barrel carburetor for easy breathing. The big V8 even has a nice rumble from the custom side exhaust. The transmission has also been upgraded to a TH400 three-speed automatic likely from the same Buick that donated its V8. While that makes for a powerful and smooth-shifting luxury car, that's not the whole story. This Roadmaster can handle the roads of the Riviera thanks to features like power steering, a four-link rear suspension, an upgrade to four-wheel disc brakes, and the modern grip of wide BF Goodrich TA tires. You're looking at a vintage Buick that came from the factory as something quite special, and then has been upgraded to be an even more unique coupe. It was this series that helped revive ragtops at General Motors, but these Buicks remained a rare sight (less than 50 turbo convertibles were sold in 1985) because of the exceptionally high base price. This has been a garaged treasure all it's life, and you'll know it the moment you see the original Red Firemist paint. This one has the kind of features and rarity that will make it a survivor hit at any car show. After all, these were almost like owning a custom car backed by a factory warranty. Few people were willing to pay nearly double the Riviera coupe price that it took to pluck a car off the assembly line and let the professionals at ASC do their droptop magic. That's why this special Buick has been cared for so well and the sheetmetal has stayed laser straight. You can see this in the trim running down the sides and the pinstripe that perfectly highlights the gentle curves of the 6th generation Riviera. Even the details are still right. The chrome is bright and shiny, the rubber bumper fillers are in excellent condition, and all the emblems and lenses are beautifully clear. It even still wears its more aggressive T-type hubcaps reserved for these rare turbo models. These were top of the line Buicks that reached into Cadillac territory, and so burgundy leather came standard inside. The full package still looks amazing, which tells you this was not left with its top off too long on sunny days (and the white top even looks brand new.) The handsome bucket seats strike a nice balance between armchair comfortable and individual support. The burled walnut veneer is some of the most handsome trim for any car in the 80s, and as expected with such an expensive convertible, it came loaded. This includes power windows, power convertible top, power locks, cruise control, and climate control so you can stay cool even with the roof down on a summer day. But there's something else you might have noticed. This one has a full set of auxiliary gauges, including a boost gauge...and that's for a very good reason. Under the hood is the same turbocharged and fuel injected 3.8-liter V6 that was made famous in the Buick Regal T-Type. This motor gave the Riviera one of the most admired 0 to 60 times in the luxury class and made it a bit of a secret rocket ship. Still, this Buick does not betray its luxury nature with its grand touring suspension and four-speed overdrive automatic transmission. This is the kind of classic that you're not intimidated to take on the long trips thanks to power steering, front disc brakes, and even ABS. Add in the big luxury, a big number-matching V8 engine, and air conditioning, and it's hard to believe you can get all of this for less than $40K. This Buick is not red or black like most muscle cars, instead, it's represented well in Teal Blue Metallic. This shade just seems to help emphasize the luxury aspect of this convertible, and it's brought out even further by a quality respray of the factory color over this Grand Sport's lifetime. It's great to find a car with body panels this straight because Buick's dramatic sweeping character line that neatly bisects the doors looks best when it's razor-sharp. Plus, the trunk has an amazing winged appearance that looks best when its been this well maintained. The chrome remains original and outstanding, with bright bumpers, shiny stainless, and correct badging, including the cool trunk-mounted GS 400 emblem. Buick's rally wheels are iconic and they look great matched with the redline tires. Deep, dark, and premium are the headlines of this interior. The black vinyl bucket seats have an intricate design that incorporates some '60s-cool chrome. The same idea is seen on the door panels, and it's all in amazing condition. The brushed stainless steel instrument panel is full of gauges, and like any good Buick, this came loaded. The driver gets to enjoy the power steering through a wood-rimed optional rally steering wheel. The passengers will take advantage of the AM/FM radio. And everyone will love the air conditioner that's running R-134a for easier maintenance. Of course even the A/C cannot combat all top down weather conditions, but that's a quick fix with the new and tight fitting black power vinyl top. The number-matching 400 cubic-inch powerplant had an advertised 340 horsepower (but those were days of underrating for the insurance people.) After all, this big block V8 with the Rochester Quadrajet four-barrel carburetor has an unmistakably powerful rumble from the dual exhaust. The ultra-clean engine bay has bright Dante Red paint on the block and unique ribbed valve covers everything that people love to see at the car shows. It fires up without hesitation thanks to a thorough refresh within the last 2,000 miles. That's exactly what you want from these Buick GS models because as powerful as they are, they still want to deliver the smooth performance that built the Grand Sport's reputation. The same goes for the four-speed manual transmission. A new unit was installed with a Hurst shifter in 2013 to makes sure that the power was always reliably in hand. It's connected to a 10-bolt Positraction rear end running the optional 3.42 ratio, so this GS is good for both power takeoffs and cruising. This is a rare big-engine Buick drop top that comes with plenty of documentation, including the maintenance receipts and the original owner's manual. It's a unique luxury muscle car that has been cared for to continue to deliver reliable smiles for many miles.
