Aluminum block and heads, port fuel injection. 6-speed manual trans. This example came equipped with factory-optional 19" twin-spoke wheels. Notable standard features include Xenon head lamps, auto climate control, rain-sensing wipers, on-board computer and adaptive brake lights. Standard performance features include a sport-tuned M suspension, performance M brakes, sport seats, lightweight carbon fiber roof and factory M aero bodywork. This is the fourth-generation M3, and is the first M3 with a V-8 engine. Powered by a 414hp 4.0L V8 engine that is paired with a proper 6-speed manual transmission. The V-8 is quite the sophisticate, with a version of BMW's Double VANOS camshaft control, individual throttle butterflies for each cylinder, and a lightweight forged crankshaft that helps make all that high-rpm work possible. The M3's six-speed Getrag-built manual is, as always, smooth-shifting. As you draw closer, the M3 sedan becomes a wolf in wolf's clothing. There's the power bulge in the hood, there to contain the all-new 414hp, 4.0L V-8. Enormous drilled brake rotors. You see gills behind the front fenders that actually look as though they belong, and the huge air intakes for the brakes and engine. Crank the engine, and the engine snarls to life. Run the M3 through the six close-ratio manual gears, and the snarl becomes a roaring growl as you climb to the engine's stratospheric 8,400-rpm limit. Then, like any good BMW sedan, the M3 is more than happy to lope along in the pickup line outside the elementary school. The cockpit is snug but roomy enough; instruments and controls are typical BMW, and the fat, red-and-blue-laced steering wheel feels right. The front buckets are firm and comfortable and are in excellent condition. Rear seat-space for two adults is tight but livable. Trunk space should be more than adequate. On the road, the M3 remains the template by which other European performance sedans must be judged. The brakes are progressive and linear, the handling is superb, and the ride from the driver's seat is surreal. The M3 has great stability at speed, shucks off bumps, and is a comfortable mile-eater. The BMW is lithe and athletic yet never punishing, and it comes in a package you can use and enjoy every day. The M3 marque has been synonymous with performance since the mid-1980's and this E92 is a fantastic example.
