BMW says the 2011 X5 has more than 4,000 new parts versus the 2010 model; comparatively few of them, however, adorn the exterior. Styling changes are fairly light: The standard fog lights have been moved inboard, and the grille and tail carry more body-colored elements. Like before, the headlights include BMW's illuminated rings for daytime running lamps. Changes to the rear include a reshaped lower bumper and revised tailpipes. The X5's interior continues mostly unchanged. The dash places a wide screen atop the central air vents, with navigation and other interfaces within. It's controlled by BMW's latest-generation iDrive system, whose knob controller now has various shortcut keys surrounding it for easier usage. The automatic transmission continues to employ a console-mounted electronic shifter. Seating for five is installed. Other installed options include a panoramic moonroof and power-adjustable steering column. A twin-turbo diesel six-cylinder with 265 hp and 425 pounds-feet of torque teams with a six-speed automatic transmission. Sixty mph comes in 6.9 seconds, BMW says; thanks to the higher efficiency of diesel fuel, EPA gas mileage tops the X5 range at 19/26 mpg city/highway. A new Brake Energy Regeneration system, so under most conditions, the X5's battery recharges only during braking or coasting. Overall, the system can save 1 percent to 2 percent on fuel consumption, the automaker says. Safety features include dual front-impact, seat-mounted side-impact and two-row side curtain airbags. Antilock brakes, traction control and an electronic stability system are also standard. We have no owner manuals, one key and floor mats for this car. It is very clean inside and out, Non-smoker. The styling of the 545i and its six-cylinder companions follows on the heels of the controversial 7 Series but appears to be more subtle and, therefore, perhaps less subject to criticism from an aesthetic perspective. Short overhangs and what BMW calls "lean-forward dynamics" highlight the design. A prominent twin kidney grille provides a connection to BMW tradition. Surrounded by painted surfaces, the grille is flanked by quad headlights inside luminous rings and beneath clear covers. Deeply wrapped lighting units are present in the front and rear. The turn signals have clear lenses. Amber LED front parking lights are thin and wedge shaped. The bodies incorporate BMW's traditional reverse kink at the rear door windows. The contemporary rear end features a high trunk lid. Adaptive brake lights are standard. A full aluminum suspension is installed, and all models have rack-and-pinion steering. The brakes on each 5 Series model have been upsized, and ventilated discs are installed all around. Five people fit inside the 545i sedan. Backseat passengers have 1.3 inches more shoulder room and 1.8 inches of additional legroom than that of the previous model. Leather upholstery and Dark Poplar wood trim are standard. Front occupants get 10-way power seat adjustment with a memory feature. A "double wave" theme is used for the dashboard. The tachometer now incorporates a variable warning segment that activates at lower rpm when the engine is cold. A three-spoke steering wheel holds multifunction controls. Rain-sensing wipers and a 10-speaker stereo with a CD player and twin subwoofers are standard. A simplified version of BMW's iDrive control system, which was introduced in the 7 Series, uses a 6.5-inch color display screen. The 545i's 4.4-liter V-8 engine features Valvetronic operation and drive-by-wire throttle; it develops 325 hp and 330 pounds-feet of torque and teams with a six-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. The automatic unit incorporates Manual and Sport modes. Integrated Advanced Head Protection is standard. All models have a flat-tire monitor.
