Up for sale is a restored, last year of production, 1974 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Convertible that has been enhanced in its appearance using Porsche inspired performance, styling and design elements. The car has 46k original miles, but is showing 9k on the replace odometer. It has had 3 enthusiast owners since new, always loved, well serviced, adult owned, non-smoker, no accidents, garage kept, and no rust. It is in a restored, high number 2 condition that could easily be made to be a number 1, near perfect cosmetic shape and every surface on the car is very clean. I just installed a brand new high performance 1776 engine and the car runs, drives, stops and handles extremely well; everything is working and restored to a very high standard of quality. This Karmann Ghia convertible has the So-Cal look that will turn heads everywhere it goes and will easily win top honors at local car shows. I feel confident that it can be driven to anywhere in North America reliable. You can contact me at 972-207-1115 to answer questions or arrange for and inspection. I am a firm believer in knowing what you are buying, so if you are interested in the deeper description read on. Past ownership history of the car The first owner acquired it new in Kansas City Mo in 1974. This Karmann Ghia was originally painted orange. The first owner sold it in 1996 to the 2nd owner who was a medical doctor in Kansas City area. During the doctors 20 years of ownership the car received 2 major restorations, the first restoration occurred in 1997 shortly after he acquired it and the 2nd restoration was performed in 2008. During the second restoration the cars received a very high quality base coat clear coat paint job in Porsche Guards Red with black out trim and accents, showing very few flaws, some scratches, two small dings and a 1 inch paint crack, the paint is two footer. The car also received 2 ½ inch front spindle drop, Porsche Fuchs wheels, Porsche type color keyed sport mirrors, Bosch halogen head lights with flat lenses and a Porsche inspired painted metal dash with full accompaniment of VDO gauges including the large VDO Tachometer. The VDO speedometer was also replaced in 2008 and shows 9000+ miles The 2nd owner rebuilt the engine and transmission with high quality HI performance parts and drove the car for 8800 miles with a 1998cc engine. In 2015 the engine started to softly knock and he stopped driving it and I acquired it soon after. During my ownership the third and most recent restoration I sent the car's engine out to be professionally rebuilt by our local DFW VW Guru, Doug Crotts with Qualitat http://www.qualitatvw.com/ Doug performed the tear down inspection and found that a cam keeper failed and it was ingested by the engine, damaging the crank. Doug and I came up with a logical plan to rebuild the engine based on reliability and performance using a 1776cc configured engine, using all new parts and no expense spared. this time I preferred not to build a punched out engine that is prone to premature failure, but a mild performance 1776cc engine with quality parts that should last 100,000 miles. The cost for the engine rebuild was more than $5000 and was completed in October 2016. Here is a list of the engines new and rebuilt parts: New crank, the light weight Scat Flywheel was resurfaced and a new clutch was used, new cylinders, new rockers, tappets, new push rod tubs, new aluminum push rods, new pistons, rebuilt heads, new oil sump pump, new bearing, new plugs, new air filters, new belt, new crank pulley, recent starter, new fuel pump, new fuel filter, new Bosh coil, new 009 distributor with electronic ignition, I also had the dual Solex carburetor's rebuilt. The engine also has a very beautiful, custom made, hi-performance, dual carburetor intake manifold that I left in raw metal and clear coated it, showing the perfect brass welds. It has a new motor mounts and rubber seal around the engine. I also used all new hose clamps, bolts, nuts screws and washers. All the engines stainless, aluminum, brass and bronzes parts were polished. The engine covers and air box was sand blasted and repainted in satin black. The engine has no detected leak oil leaks an when at hot idle shows 45 lb. of presser and 60 LB. at speed. It has a new EMPI Pee Shooter exhaust that sounds great. I have put less than 100 miles on the engine so far and have changed the oil twice and it running perfect, I am still in the engines brake in period and have not gone above 4000 RPM on the engine yet. Here is a list of other items that I replaced with new or recently restored: It also has newer rear axles, new KYB shocks up front, new Koni adjustable coil over shocks in the rear, new front spindle bearing, and new front brake pads. The tires are wide and low profile 15 inch in the front and 16 inch in the rear and have 95% tread life and are staggered in size, The car also has a new battery and recent generator. The interior has a nice padded dash with no cracks, nice gray carpeting and very nice door cards and interior plastic and trim. It has a new black Forever Sharp steering wheel with VW logo, The underside of the car looks like new and was wires wheeled, sanded cleaned and repainted with satin black and black undercoating. It has a recently installed a orange faced Blaupunkt Acapulco sound system with CD, player, Apple IPod interface and Blue Tooth. 2 ea. Pile Driver 3 way, 6 inch marine speakers in cases, mounted on the rear deck behind the front seats on a stainless steel bar, that sound loud and clear. Also included with the sale of the car is a new pair black RS Sport seats with a nice design that cost about $700 and a new black German Cloth convertible top with new headliner, costing over $650, but these items have not been installed. The existing top is still in good shape and so is the original seats, but with these items install the car will ne at or near number #1 condition. The car also has a usable spare tire, and some spare parts. There is an original owners manual and some of the records. Karmann Ghia History The Karmann Ghia body designed by the Italian design firm Carrozeria and hand built by German coach builder Karmann. The Karmann Ghia was an instant success. The car has had a very long and successful production run from 1955 to 1974. ("I couldn't find a sports car of my of my dreams, so I built it."-Ferdinand Porsche) The Karmann Ghia Convertible series began in 1957 and ended in 1974 In the last 2 years of production, the car benefited from later design enhancements such as, IRS rear suspension, traditional lug pattern and front disk brakes. A perfect future investment. Compare the rest, but if you're looking for the best, this is the one! I am asking $20999 or OBO for a way above average Karmann Ghia Convertible. 1973 Green Karmann Ghia with rebuilt engine approximately 50,000 miles on rebuilt engine. Last year with back seat that Volkswagen built. 1974 car was discontinued. Car has 1600cc original air cooled engine that runs. I've been asked if parts can be found, and the answer is yes, online or there are Volkswagen stores that specialize in air cooled engines. It is not tagged for Texas because of electrical short in the horn and blinker that sometimes works and sometimes does not. Odometer says 99000 but again this is part of the electrical short so sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn't work. Carbonator, engine belt replaced recently. Needs body work and paint job, plus interior needs to be redone but steering wheel and dash in good shape. Also pans are in good shape. Have all the original emblems and book from the original owner. Have purchased new lens for the car but not installed will include this with sale of car.

This 1965 Volkswagen Karmann-Ghia is restored just the way you'd do it yourself, nicely finished and with a few smart upgrades that make it worry-free summer fun you can drive any time. Karmann-Ghia coupes are none too easy to find these days. Cabriolets, sure there are plenty of them, but the sporty coupe is arguably a purer design with far lower survival rates. This is actually a 1968 body on a 1965 chassis, but there's no downside to that because of the VW's awesome parts interchangeability. It's been thoroughly freshened, with good bodywork and gaps and a period bright blue paint job that suits the sleek little VW just fine. Details are what set the Karmann-Ghia apart from other cars of the period, from the tasteful little grilles up front to the wonderfully sleek greenhouse to the flared rear fenders that give it a substantial look; it's easy to forget there's a Beetle underneath. There's also plenty of chrome which is all in great shape, along with the bullet-shaped parking light lenses and Euro-spec front bumper that's a lot cleaner than the clumsy US unit. This might be the best-looking car you can buy for under $15,000. The upright Beetle becomes the low-slung Karmann-Ghia pretty easily and the low-back buckets look very appropriate. Wearing new vinyl seat covers, they're comfortable and in great condition. There are also new carpets, door panels, and headliner, although the back seat is best used for children due to the sloping roofline. The instruments are a bit more interesting than the standard Beetle, offering a separate fuel gauge and a clock, and the 4-speed manual shifter should feel familiar if you've ever driven a rear-engined VW. There is no radio, but that means you can install anything you'd like without having to undo someone else's work. The rear seat folds down and actually gives you a huge cargo bay, which works in conjunction with a good-sized forward trunk, all of which are fully upholstered in black carpet, giving it a very finished look. A freshly rebuilt 1600 cc air-cooled flat-four should be familiar to VW fans, and with dual carbs, it's a lively performer. The engine bay is nicely finished and it's obvious that the entire car was disassembled for the restoration. Things that a lot of cars omit, like the heater tubes and original Bosch ignition coil are still in place and it runs superbly. It also offers goodies like new brakes with a fresh master cylinder, a clean fuel tank, and a new clutch throwout bearing. From behind the wheel, it feels nimble with light control efforts despite manual steering and brakes and the experience is very different from the Beetle. Chrome wheels with standard VW hubcaps are just the right look and they carry recent Firestone radials all around. From long-term ownership, this VW offers restoration receipts and photos to document the work, making it a safe buy and one of the biggest bangs for the buck in any of our showrooms. 1972 Karmann Ghia Convertible. Widely considered the best looking VW ever produced, this car has all the charm and character of a 365 Porsche. This particular model has chrome bumpers, glass rear window, and front disk brakes. Beginning in 2014, this car was totally restored. The vehicle had 30,000 miles on the odometer. The body had little rust to start with. The rear battery area, where these cars always rust, was in perfect condition! The original floor pans are still in place. The vehicle has received a new paint job, including 5 coats of clear, applied in two stages for a deep wet look reflection. The original engine was completely rebuilt, just a few months ago. Machine work performed by Randy’s VW Hobby Shop. Interestingly, when taken apart, it was noted that the engine would have run as is! Having never been apart before, the engine case is what you consider basically the best case you can use to build an engine from. In addition to being completely internally rebuilt, the engine also included a new German Bosch Generator, Empi Carburator, and German made Dansk Muffler. New clutch, pressure plate and throwout bearing were also installed. The brakes have been gone through, with new brake hoses on all four wheels, and new front rotors. A new brake master cylinder was installed as well. New steering damper and new tie rod ends where installed on the front suspension. For tires, if you haven’t noticed, this car is sporting a set of brand new Michelin XZX in size 165SR15. That is the proper, period correct tire for this car. The tires were ordered from Coker Tire, and cost about $750 installed. I chose these tires because I was trying to restore the car to original appearance and feel, and the look of the alternative tire sizes available did not appeal to me. The spare tire is also new. One the rear deck is a new, made in Denmark, luggage rack. It is completely removable, and required no drilling or marring of the paint to install. The Top is completely new, including foam pad and headliner. New seals are installed around the top side door windows. The interior has new visors, new carpet, door panels, and new seat upholstery. The stereo system installed in the car is unique. It is a Retro Sound stereo with Blaupunkt speakers mounted in the front. What is nice about it is that, not only does it sound great, it looks absolutely period-correct. With chrome dials, and black and chrome faceplate, it looks like it belongs there. It even has an auxiliary cable to directly hook up your iPod or phone. To keep the car intact, the car also includes the original factory stereo. Front luggage compartment is clean, with carpet covering a brand new gas tank. You won’t have to deal with rust clogging your fuel system. The original factory tool kit is also included.

This is a 1971 VW Karmon Giha. As you probably already know, 1971 was the best year for the K-Ghia convertible with its real glass rear window, disc brakes, the classic chrome bumpers with “towel racks” (last year) and smaller tail lights to name just a few. Included in the sale is an extensive dossier on the car with many receipts from the total restoration including full engine rebuild. INTERIORThe interior is in excellent condition. It was restored by the previous owner some years ago, not sure how long ago but it still looks really nice. The seats are a little soft and very comfortable. The faux wood instrument panel is excellent, In addition, the carpets are really nice and the headliner is in great shape as well. It still retains the stock, factory steering wheel and the horn actually works. All the lights work, including the blinkers. The visors are very nice. EXTERIOR The black paint is a repaint and done well but it does have some crazing, I took some close up pictures to show you it’s very bright and very presentable. There is one small spot of rust in the engine compartment on the outside edge were water would collect, I took a picture of it, the pans and all the rest is very nice and rust free MECHANICS:This Karmann Ghia convertible has 84k miles and runs and drives great! It can cruise down the freeway at 60 to 65 MPH all day long! The transmission, clutch and brakes all work as they should. It is simply a joy to drive, especially with the top down. Just warm it up and off you go! Ask any questions or call Rodney at 817-320-7628
