Today, the Beetle is an equally great starter hobby car, with examples like this 1971 model still available for a very affordable price. It gives you a great old car feel, unparalleled parts and knowledge support, and an undeniable appeal that puts a smile on everyone's face. Simple is good when you're a Beetle fan, and while this lovely Bug shows just the right amount of patina, it also carries a handsome color combination that's just a bit out of the ordinary. Well, light blue isn't all that unusual, but the matching blue cloth interior is seldom-seen. But before we go there, let's take a closer look at the bodywork, which remains quite good. Fit and finish on the lowly Beetle were actually above average, and while rumors of them floating because they sealed up so well were probably slightly exaggerated, there's no denying that this one fits together very well. The early Beetle styling cues such as the small taillights, chrome-rimmed headlights, and simple chrome bumpers are all present and accounted for, and still in great shape. You can tell it's an original Beetle and not a Super Beetle by the flat windshield, and the big chrome bumpers dress it up nicely. If you like the traditional Beetle look, you're going to love this car. As I mentioned, the interior makes this Bug something special, with blue cloth in place of the usual black. The interior is likely original, so it's showing some wear, but nothing critical beyond a small split on the bottom of the driver's seat back and some wear on the lower cushion, all of which I think I'd leave alone. Instrumentation is simple, with a round speedometer with an integrated gas gauge tucked above the odometer. Simple gray carpets with rubber floor mats make it durable, the headliner fits quite well, giving the car a well-tailored look. The trunk area is also correctly finished with proper cardboard liners, a full-sized spare tire that might even be original, and absolutely zero signs of accident damage. If you're looking for a clean Bug, this is it. Mechanically, the Bug is familiar to anyone who has even a passing interest in cars. The air-cooled flat-four starts with the characteristic exhaust note, and under the deck lid shows a lot of originality and recent maintenance. All the heating tubes are in place, which you don't often find on older Beetles, and it looks quite original. Beetles are famous for their bulletproof reliability, and this one is no exception, as it starts every time and drives extremely well. Performance is modest, even with the 4-speed manual transmission, but that's the whole point of an old car: to be transported to a different era. This one still carries its original floor pan, which is solid, and all the original suspension and brake components have been serviced properly over the years. Recently restored steel wheels with bright hubcaps carry skinny blackwall radials with a lot of life left in them. A very clean early Beetle with lots of personality and a great color combination. Get into the hobby today without a big investment. It's been everywhere and done everything, including, apparently, becoming a desirable collectable. This 1972 Beetle is ample evidence that the days of finding these for pennies on the dollar are long gone, and reminds us that the good ones always represent the best value. This is a lot of car for the money! Volkswagens can wear vivid colors without looking like they're trying too hard, and bright red is a great choice for the personality-laden Beetle. While they're no longer a staple on America's highways, they are still recognized instantly by everyone from tiny children to seniors. This is one of those great cars that effectively blurs the line between restored and original, and it's hard to say whether the paint is amazingly well preserved or just an older repaint. Either way, it has an honest patina to it, a gentle shine that looks right on the curvy old bodywork, and clear evidence that it's been loved. Sure, it's been driven, but what Beetle hasn't, and the overall look is quite appealing. VW fans will be pleased to see the old-style taillights that most prefer, as well as bright chrome bumpers, very nicely preserved rubber running boards (probably the last production car to use them), and just enough stainless trim to make it look right next to the flashy American iron. No major issues or faults, just a clean, honest Beetle that would really respond well to some old-fashioned elbow grease. Basic black was the standard interior for the Beetle, and the high-back buckets wear correct textured vinyl seat covers that seem to wear like granite over the years. Door panels recall an earlier era with built-in map pockets, and the dash remains simple with just a single round speedometer and integral fuel level gauge. The 4-speed gear shift falls easily to hand, and within a few miles you'll have mastered it, vague gates notwithstanding. Snug-fitting window gaskets help it seal up well, although I'm pretty sure the stories of VWs being so tight that they would float in water are an exaggeration. This one really is as basic as they come, including radio delete, but that also means that there's no questionable modifications that seem to plague older Beetles. The carpets are in nice shape, the seat covers are just too nice to be original, and it has a very nicely integrated look throughout the interior. Even the forward trunk area is neatly upholstered in black carpets that dress things up, just a little. Touch the starter and the 1300 cc flat-four springs to life and sounds like a Beetle should. The engine bay is quite tidy, showing off careful maintenance and signs that someone really cared about keeping it in top condition, and you could spend a Saturday afternoon cleaning it up to really make a difference. A single-barrel carburetor with an open-element air cleaner air cleaner is atop a recent carburetor, and all the heater ducts are still in place. It starts easily and idles well, and despite its modest performance, this one feels like it could run forever. The aforementioned 4-speed manual transmission shifts better than most, and with the modular design of the undercarriage, it's easy to replace parts that need help, as there's a brand new floor pan on the passenger's side. Standard steel wheels with shiny hubcaps and trim rings give it a traditional look and are fitted with 165/80/15 Kumho radials, a size that's ideal for the vintage Bug. Don't restore a rusty one, take this clean, fully-sorted Beetle home and just enjoy it. They've always been a favorite of car people and non-car people and if there's a more distinctive machine on four wheels, I don't know what it would be. So when you have a chance to own a nice one like this 1978 Beetle convertible, you should probably take it, simply because it's still a lot of fun for not a lot of money and a painless way to get into an old car. This one-owner ragtop was restored as needed over the course of its life, and like many such cars, the need for a comprehensive rebuilt at the molecular level was never really required. As a result, it's got a solid feeling that only comes from cars that haven't been fully disassembled and a classic look that's a little bit funky to suit the Beetle's personality. The medium red metallic paint might have been on the color pallet in 1978, but rendered in modern materials, it positively glows. It's not pink, it's not magenta, it's not bronze, but rather somewhere in-between that certainly makes it stand out, and on a Beetle, nothing looks bad. The trim is probably original and in decent shape, with a little tarnishing of the chrome that would probably buff right up with an afternoon of attention, and the Super Beetle upgrades, including shiny side moldings, gives it a detailed look. Aside from pickup trucks, the Beetle might be the last car to actually use running boards, and they're in good condition with nice rubber and a slice of bright trim to set them off. The white interior was installed at the same time the body was painted, sometime in the late 1990s. Given that the car had already earned collector status by then, it hasn't been driven much and everything still looks bright and crisp inside. The seats are comfortable vinyl that use the original patterns and show only minimal use, resulting in an inviting patina that looks comfortable but not worn. Black carpets keep it from being too bright inside, and a woodgrained dash, while not particularly convincing, adds warmth. The gauges are fully operational and there's a newer AM/FM/CD stereo in the dash with the original Blaupunkt included with the sale. The white top was new at that time, too, and fits well, folds easily, and doesn't show any major signs of age. Obviously someone loved this Bug. Remarkably, the original fuel-injected engine is still providing power. This is in contrast to most of the other Beetles of this vintage that have been retrofitted with carburetors, a strange step backwards. It starts easily and runs quite well, and thanks to that fuel injection system, it doesn't have any fussiness when it first starts or on hot days. The engine bay is pretty packed, but the equipment is correct and shows only regular maintenance throughout the past 36 years. The 4-speed manual transmission is typical Beetle, but once you figure it out it's easy and fun. The floor pans were replaced in 2003, so no need to worry about that (it's pretty much a non-issue in VW circles) and the exhaust system is recent and delivers a proper VW sound. Factory steel wheels carry newer 155/80/15 BFGoodrich radials which seem tailor-made for this application. Good VW Beetle convertibles seem to have settled in the mid-teens price range, so you can buy today and enjoy with confidence that it'll always be worth about what you have in it. Not many other vehicles can make that claim. More than just thrifty transportation, this is a fun vintage ragtop with iconic status that's the equal of anything this side of a '57 Chevy, and it's been maintained to a level that belies its affordable price tag. No, there weren't any Beetles in showrooms that looked this good in 1978. Thanks to a repaint a few years ago, it wears a glittering coat of Champagne Peach Metallic Red, which is definitely a luxurious-looking color on the rounded VW's body. The paint captures a depth and shimmer that looks expensive and takes the humble VW up a few notches in the desirability scale, and showing up in this one means attracting a crowd. Coming out of long-term ownership, you know it's had a good life and the owner reports that it has always been kept in a garage and not exposed to the elements. Super Beetles received some much-appreciated upgrades, including a curved windshield, longer wheelbase, and a revised front suspension that markedly improved ride and handling. As a result, if you're going to drive your VW, a Super Beetle is an outstanding choice. Add in some bright chrome bumpers, just a bit of stainless trim, the "Fuel Injection" badge on the engine cover, and you have one flashy Beetle. Those bright white bucket seats have obviously been restored, along with the rest of the interior. The bright white and black interior is a great contrast to the copper-colored bodywork and is a pleasant place to be when the sun is shining. Door panels, side panels, and the rear seat were all covered so it looks very OEM, and with a set of contrasting black carpets, the interior has a very high-quality feel. The controls are all still stock, including the round speedometer and traditional 4-speed shifter, although the woodgrained shifter knob is a sporting touch. An AM/FM/CD stereo was installed, along with powerful speakers in custom kick panel enclosures, so you'll have exactly the right soundtrack to match your new Beetle. You'll also note under-dash A/C, which remains fully functional thanks to good old R12 refrigerant in the system. The white convertible top fits well and hides under a matching boot, and thanks to the repositioned spare tire of the Super Beetle, there's plenty of room in the fully upholstered trunk. The 1600 cc flat-four shows signs of excellent maintenance, so any worries about reliability are unnecessary (it IS a VW after all). Everything in the engine bay has been tidied up and while it's not quite show-car perfect, it's clean and orderly with lots of new equipment. Fuel injection was a late addition to the Beetle, and while a lot of folks retrofit carburetors, a properly functioning injection system is reliable and easy to maintain. All the critical duct work remains intact and the exhaust system sounds right. One glance underneath will tell you all you need to know about how well-kept this car truly is, because everything is in very good condition with shiny floor pans, ultra-clean suspension pieces, and lots of new hardware. The final update is a set recent whitewall radials on the original steel wheels with trim rings. This is a really nice Beetle convertible, ready to go. Do you really need to know more? Guess again! This neat little Bugatti replica dates to the 1970s and uses a sturdy and reliable VW Beetle platform to re-create one of history's greatest sports cars, the Bugatti Type 35. Now obviously it isn't going to fool purists, but if you want the most entertaining 4-wheeled experience per dollar, this car has few equals. They got the proportions pretty close on this replica, starting with the traditional Bugatti horseshoe-shaped grille, long hood, and boattail-style bodywork. The original cars were as minimalist as you could be and still call it an automobile and were designed primarily for racing, and this car carries the same attitude. Note the cycle-style fenders, the low-slung chassis, and exposed hand brake, not to mention the lower cladding that's held on by safety wire for easy access. These are all details that recall the original at least in flavor if not function. It's been in the same owner's hands for 25 years, so obviously there's something to its charm, and honestly, it's pretty easy to imagine sitting behind those tiny windscreens and slinging this sportster through the turns of your favorite country road. Finish quality is decent, acceptable for weekend outings, but this isn't a show car and was never intended to be. It's mostly fiberglass, of course, but that also means it's durable and easy to maintain. You also get chrome headlights poking up over the fenders, a side-mounted spare, and plenty of lighting out back for safety. The interior is still very minimalist in the Bugatti tradition. Brown vinyl on a bench seat doesn't do much to hold you in place, so it's a good idea they added seat belts, too. The wood-rimmed steering wheel feels beefy in your hands and is directly connected to the front suspension, so you always know exactly what's going on. The matching wood dashboard has a vintage vibe and carries basic gauges to monitor the air-cooled engine's vitals. A 4-speed shifter sticks out of the floor and will feel familiar to anyone who has driven a Beetle and the seating position is pretty good for something so low. There's no top, no side curtains, no radio, no heater, so there's nothing to get in the way of the fun. Everything is in good condition considering its age and it needs nothing to start having fun immediately. And while the Bugatti sported a straight-8 under that long hood, this VW-based replica has a fairly spacious trunk area with a big gas tank up there for easy cruising. The 1800 cc VW flat-four lives under the pointed rear deck and the illusion is pretty convincing. Of course, start it up and it has that traditional VW soundtrack, but the gutsy little engine moves the lightweight roadster with aplomb. It's easy to maintain, parts are insanely cheap, and this really is more fun that you should be allowed to have with a car. The VW's all-independent suspension works especially well with the low-slung roadster bodywork and the drum brakes are powerful in this application, too. New components include the carburetor, a fresh tune up, brake drums and new wheel cylinders, so it's ready to play. And those spoked wheels with 6.00-15 blackwall tires, it has more than a passing similarity to the Type 35's original wheels. No, it's not a million-dollar find, but that's not the point. The truth is, this is just fun boiled down to its most elemental level, and for that this car is ideally suited. Yes, building a car like this costs a lot of money, but the results are worth it. This 1974 Super Beetle is perhaps the nicest VW we've ever featured and includes sensible upgrades that transform it from a pleasant, if anachronistic old VW to a legitimate car with daily driver abilities. The beautiful Polo White paint job is understated and it doesn't hit you over the head with how good it is. However, even up close you'll find that the paint is quite good and as with most well-maintained VWs, build quality is impressive. The doors and hood fit well and close with a secure feeling that is quite reassuring in the diminutive Beetle. The finish has a nice gloss, not too hard like modern cars, but just about right for a vintage machine that's about to celebrate its 40th birthday. A few chrome bits, plus the stainless trim that was part of the Super Beetle redesign gives it a bright, cheerful look, and even details like the running boards were freshened during the restoration. Open the door and be prepared to be pleasantly surprised, because the bright red interior is fully restored and a wonderful contrast to the usual black vinyl. Correct textured seat covers over high-back buckets match the new door panels for a very clean, professional look. A heavy-duty gray carpets keep it looking like it should and reduce maintenance, and the lovely woodgrained steering wheel adds some upscale elegance to a car that usually doesn't see anything like that. You'll note there's under-dash A/C, which was a rather rare option and is fully functional here thanks to R134a refrigerant, and the original radio is long gone, replaced by an AM/FM/CD stereo head unit with nicely integrated speakers in the kick panels. An aftermarket consolette around the 4-speed shifter makes it practical with a pair of cup holders, and the original gauges are really nice. The forward-mounted trunk is in good order and doesn't exhibit any of the VW trouble spots. This VW was really built to drive, and the 2110 cc flat-four gives it good power that's quite noticeable on the open road. Fitted with a Dellatoro carburetor and Pertronix electronic ignition, it starts easily and runs superbly, with a characteristic whistling exhaust note that can't help but make you smile. The engine bay is extremely clean and tidy, with lots of new components and everything in working order, including the duct work for the heater system. It is also fitted with a 4-speed "Freeway Flyer" transmission with gear ratios that are a lot more favorable to today's traffic conditions, and it happily buzzes along at speeds that would ordinarily be stressful for a Beetle. The underside is very nicely finished and you can see evidence of the high-quality restoration everywhere you look, including the floor pans and rear suspension. 4-wheel disc brakes give it very impressive stopping power and the exhaust manifolds were modified to give it two outlets under the rear valence. Painted steel wheels with proper chrome hubcaps look authentic and carry tall 165R15 whitewall radials for a period-perfect look. I guess you could call this VW a resto-mod, but it works so well and looks so authentic that it'll be easy to forget they aren't all this nice. Sure, it's still transportation, but this car was built to put a big grin on your face and nothing else. It offers lots of recent work, so it's not only great looking but also ready to enjoy. We can all but guarantee you'll be the only guy tooling around in one of these even though the look is instantly familiar. Unlike, say, the Myers Manx, this is strictly a 2-seater and that gives it neat proportions that look great, as if it were a cross between a dune buggy and a T-bucket. Long, flowing fenders contrast with the squared-off deck in back, but the whole design is very professional and well-executed so nothing looks sub-standard. Repainted two years ago, the fiberglass is in good condition with no major signs of age and a great gloss that's quite appropriate to something of this vintage. This is motoring down to its barest essence, so there isn't much chrome save for the bug-eyed headlights up front and that big, upright windshield. In back, the VW Beetle engine becomes an integral part of the overall look and it's fascinating to watch this sucker run down the road. More minimalism inside where simple pleated black vinyl looks good, wears well, and is weather-resistant enough for its alfresco duties. Hop over the side of the tub and it's easy to settle in behind the wheel and you'll find that the driving position is more early British roadster than German economy car, and with those big pontoon fenders out there, you can clip apexes more easily than you ever thought possible. Creature comforts are few and that's entirely the point here; anything that wasn't necessary for the job of having fun was omitted. That means no windshield wipers, no heater, not even a radio, simply because you'll be blasting along having too much fun to need to worry about additional entertainment. The VW's original gauge pod was neatly installed in the dash and aftermarket turn signals are affixed to the side of the steering column for safety's sake. Floor coverings are institutional and easy to maintain, which is this car's mantra. VW's air-cooled flat four needs no introduction, and this 1493 cc unit provides plenty of power for the flyweight dune buggy. Painted bright red to match the bodywork, the engine is equipped with the usual hop-up parts, including a bigger carburetor that was installed in June 2014, and exotic exhaust headers with chrome tips that are as much styling element as noise suppression system. The Beetle's 4-speed manual transmission and floor pan made the transition intact and with the low center of gravity, handling is adept. Obviously this was never someone's winter beater, so the underside remains in very good order with no glaring trouble spots. Lots of finned aluminum helps with the air-cooled engine at seed and you'll undoubtedly find that this car loves to play. Oddly enough, GM Rally wheels bolt right on and now carry 205/70/15 front and 235/60/15 rear tires that look positively gigantic on the tiny car's frame. This car also comes with a tow bar to be used behind, say, an RV, suggesting that someone has already realized that a vacation on wheels is what this car is all about. View Large Images ? ? Vehicle Information VIN: 1582050507 Stock: 2062-ATL Mileage: 58,365 Color: Burgundy Trans: Manual Engine: MPG: Drivetrain: Description VW Beetles, theyre never going to go out of fashion. Theyve always been a favorite of car people and non-car people and if theres a more distinctive machine on four wheels, I dont know what it would be. So when you have a chance to own a nice one like this 1978 Beetle convertible, you should probably take it, simply because its still a lot of fun for not a lot of money and a painless way to get into an old car. This one-owner ragtop was restored as needed over the course of its life, and like many such cars, the need for a comprehensive rebuilt at the molecular level was never really required. As a result, its got a solid feeling that only comes from cars that havent been fully disassembled and a classic look thats a little bit funky to suit the Beetles personality. The medium red metallic paint might have been on the color pallet in 1978, but rendered in modern materials, it positively glows. Its not pink, its not magenta, its not bronze, but rather somewhere in-between that certainly makes it stand out, and on a Beetle, nothing looks bad. The trim is probably original and in decent shape, with a little tarnishing of the chrome that would probably buff right up with an afternoon of attention, and the Super Beetle upgrades, including shiny side moldings, gives it a detailed look. Aside from pickup trucks, the Beetle might be the last car to actually use running boards, and theyre in good condition with nice rubber and a slice of bright trim to set them off. The white interior was installed at the same time the body was painted, sometime in the late 1990s. Given that the car had already earned collector status by then, it hasnt been driven much and everything still looks bright and crisp inside. The seats are comfortable vinyl that use the original patterns and show only minimal use, resulting in an inviting patina that looks comfortable but not worn. Black carpets keep it from being too bright inside, and a woodgrained dash, while not particularly convincing, adds warmth. The gauges are fully operational and theres a newer AM/FM/CD stereo in the dash with the original Blaupunkt included with the sale. The white top was new at that time, too, and fits well, folds easily, and doesnt show any major signs of age. Obviously someone loved this Bug. Remarkably, the original fuel-injected engine is still providing power. This is in contrast to most of the other Beetles of this vintage that have been retrofitted with carburetors, a strange step backwards. It starts easily and runs quite well, and thanks to that fuel injection system, it doesnt have any fussiness when it first starts or on hot days. The engine bay is pretty packed, but the equipment is correct and shows only regular maintenance throughout the past 36 years. The 4-speed manual transmission is typical Beetle, but once you figure it out its easy and fun. The floor pans were replaced in 2003, so no need to worry about that (its pretty much a non-issue in VW circles) and the exhaust system is recent and delivers a proper VW sound. Factory steel wheels carry newer 155/80/15 BFGoodrich radials which seem tailor-made for this application. Good VW Beetle convertibles seem to have settled in the mid-teens price range, so you can buy today and enjoy with confidence that itll always be worth about what you have in it. Not many other vehicles can make that claim. Call today! View Large Images ? ? Vehicle Information VIN: 1562108702 Stock: 2042-ATL Mileage: 36,520 Color: Red Trans: Manual Engine: MPG: Drivetrain: Description Ah, the lovable VW Beetle. Youve probably spent the last 20 years thinking you could always pick one up for pennies and just never got around to it. Well the day has finally come when nice ones like this 1976 convertible are no longer disposable transportation, theyre legitimate collectors items. And theyre still just as much fun as they were back in the good old days. Bright red is probably the best color for a VW Beetle, bright, cheerful, and highly visible, and in fact when this Bug was repainted a few years ago, they used Georgia Bulldog Red to make a statement. Its a great color, bold and vibrant without being too orange or too pink, and it would probably make a great parade vehicle in any regard. Despite their affordable price, these were always rather well-built little cars and even the convertibles like this one feel durable. Gaps are good, the doors fit with a solid feeling, and the body fits together quite well with a nice shine to the paint. Its not perfect because its hard to resist driving a Beetle convertible on a sunny day, but it looks authentic and thats really what matters. The black rubber running boards are in good condition and the bright trim appears original. The chrome bumpers could use a little attention, but theyre serviceable as-is and are easy to upgrade down the line. The interior is standard Beetle fare, with high-back bucket seats wrapped in some of the most durable man-made materials ever invented. Matching door panels were probably replaced at the same time the rest of the work was done and the carpets are reproduction pieces that fit well, although they could stand to be re-attached around the pedals. The simple instrument panel is VW engineering at its most basic, with big, clear numbers and an integral fuel gauge. Whatever the original radio may have been, its long gone, replaced by a Kenwood AM/FM/CD stereo head unit that sounds great when youre tooling around town in your bright red Bug. The 4-speed shifter will feel familiar to anyone who has ever owned a Beetle before, and with a little practice, youll be shifting like a pro. The forward trunk is largely original, but you can easily see how thorough the paint job was. And theres a newer black convertible top with glass rear window and headliner, giving the VW a far more expensive feel than youd expect at this price level. A standard 1600 cc flat-four provides power, and while performance is adequate, its the way it goes about its business that makes the Beetle such a joy. It has good torque and a peppy demeanor, and with the lightweight body, it zips around without seeming to work hard. Its pretty tight in there, but the original equipment is intact and it runs rather well, as Beetles tend to do when theyre not neglected. The transmission shifts like it should and thanks to a fairly comprehensive restoration about ten years ago, the underside is in good order and ready for another few decades of fun. No surprises await you in the floors or rocker boxes, and the suspension feels buttoned-down and well-sorted. Stock steel wheels with hubcaps are really the best choice on an early Beetle and they wear 165R15 blackwalls with a very appropriate look. Complete with manuals, receipts, and restoration photos, this is a fun, inexpensive car that delights everyone who sees it. Better move fast, though, because a lot of people are realizing how special these Bugs really are. Call today! Camper, transporter, pickup truck, house on wheels, tour guide, whatever it is, the VW bus has done it. This 1968 Volkswagen bus is just a wonderful way to grab all of that history and keep it for yourself, all wrapped in a familiar yet surprisingly stylish body. A vintage VW resto shop has obviously lavished a lot of time and attention on this bus and the results are very impressive. It's definitely low-key with its serious gray and white paint scheme, but the paint is fresh, deep and all-around great. Note the clean, unadorned lines accentuated not by graphics or art but by laser-straight bodywork and deep, shiny paintwork that only comes from pros doing their thing. The two-tone combination is quite period-correct and gives the bus a jaunty appearance despite the more somber colors. Other things like the painted bumpers and big chrome VW emblem in the center are trademarks that VW faithful can recognize from a mile away and a canvas sunroof up top makes it as bright and airy inside as you'd expect. Tinted glass also provides a modicum of privacy as well as adding to the sleek look that makes the VW so special. The interior is really where these vehicles shine. Totally restored, it offers great colors and basic accommodations for passengers, but the style is impressive. The bright orange upholstery is a wonderful contrast to the gray exterior and the original-style vinyl will last practically forever. Proper side panels and door panels give it a very finished look and the original-style headliner overhead keeps it authentic. The front seats offer a commanding view of the road completely free of obstructions, and the bus-like driving position is actually comfortable for long trips, which is really what these buses were designed to do. Basic instrumentation was provided by the factory, and this one has been augmented with much more important gauges like a cylinder head temperature gauge, an oil temperature gauge (remember the VW is air cooled), oil pressure gauge, and a voltmeter. You'll also be pleased to see an upgraded stereo system with an AM/FM/CD head unit and speakers in the kick panel ahead of the front seat. And in addition to three rows of seats, there's a reasonably large and nicely upholstered package shelf atop the engine bay in back. The new crate engine is a relatively high-performance version of the Beetle's venerable flat-four. Displacing 1776 cc, it's big enough to provide some added punch without sacrificing reliability and with twin-port heads, it breathes a lot more freely which means more power. Oversized carburetors help with power production and the engine bay is as neatly detailed as the rest of the bus. A mild cam and upgraded pistons help deliver energetic performance and a remote oil filter and Empi oil cooler are on hand for improved reliability. Headers and a performance muffler extract every bit of horsepower from the little boxer engine and it has a great exhaust note that's instantly familiar and will bring a smile to your face. The underside is in very good condition and with a 4-speed manual transmission, it is a lot of fun to drive. Standard steel wheels with color-matched hubcaps and 185/65/14 radials look traditional and custom at the same time. If you're a fan of VW buses, this is a great one that might be considered a resto-mod. Everything that was done only enhances what was already great, making it one of the best we've seen.
