Back in the 60%26acirc;??s anyone who was into cars would be hard pressed not to find an ad in the back of a Popular Mechanics or Hot Vw%26acirc;??s magazine for a do it yourself dune buggy kit. The 60%26acirc;??s and 70%26acirc;??s were a great time for outdoor leisure activities and beach buggies were all the rage. Built off of a reliable easily maintained VW pan and drive train its easy to see why these were a great choice for recreational automobiles. The 1600cc flat four VW engine was rather peppy despite its sub 70hp rating but remove all of the sheet metal and put a light weight fiberglass body on top and you have the makings of something very quick. The current trend in buggies in the 2000%26acirc;??s is no longer low power light weight sand hoppers but quite the opposite. Current buggies are being built with 2332 and other exotic CC engines while being outfitted with dual carbs or turbo chargers to make for a terrifyingly fast street machine. The fun yellow buggy we have at our Orlando showroom is a great blend of yesterdays underpinnings with todays technology. Equipped with a recently built 1600cc dual port engine and 4 speed transaxle the reliability is still up to VW standards unlike the stroker engines that have the tendency to overheat due to thinner cylinder walls. Rowing through the gears is aided by an EMPI short throw shifter with reverse lock out. The wiring harness in this buggy is all new and wired with a modern fuse panel. Why the modern fuse panel and alternator conversion you might ask? Well the answer is simple, its for the sound system. Most buggies contain a simple low wattage stereo system but ours comes with a phenom of a clarion system including 1000w 4 chanel amp, 10%26acirc;? subwoofer, 2 6x9%26acirc;??s in the rear, and 2 6 %26Acirc;%26frac12;%26acirc;??s up front all marine grade from the amp to the speakers.
