It offers high-quality workmanship all out of proportion to its price tag and definitely delivers on the fun its outrageous looks promise. VW experts will quickly spot the fact that this isn't a 1972 Volkswagen, not the body shell at least. It's a 1957 Beetle body on a 1972 chassis, combining the fantastic oval-window early Beetle look with the upgrades that came a decade or two later. Of course, the screaming orange paint, raked stance, and subtle body mods take it a few steps farther away from stock, but that's a big part of this Bug's appeal. Finish quality is remarkably good, particularly for an affordable Beetle, and the bright finish works rather well on the endearing rounded shape. Beetle fans will quickly spot the folding Webasto sunroof with black canvas lid, the modified engine cover designed to offer better cooling, as well as the visor over the windshield that gives it a period look. The rest of the 1957 details remain intact, from the cool little horn grilles under the headlights to the small taillights and sculpted tail panel. And chrome bumpers really set it all off beautifully. The first thing you'll notice inside is a set of supportive black buckets, which were definitely not on the menu in 1957. Remarkably, however, they look right at home in this Beetle, which keeps all its original flavor inside. There's a simple dashboard with a full array of auxiliary gauges neatly installed around the factory speedometer as well as a funky retro steering wheel. The center of the dash is filled with an AM/FM/CD/DVD head unit with Bluetooth and USB and a simple control panel for the balance of the car's functions, including the HVAC, which is a cool little fan down by your knees. The 4-speed manual transmission will feel familiar to anyone who has driven a Bug, although the shifter on this one seems a little tighter than most and adds to the sporty feel of the car. Nicely made door panels, billet hardware, and a fully carpeted former back seat area, which is now a massive trunk with a pair of powerful speakers in custom enclosures. The forward-mounted trunk is pretty stock, and includes a full-sized spare, just in case. The air-cooled flat four is a bit more robust than your usual VW powerplant, and has been punched out to 1835cc and inhales through a pair of 40mm Weber carbs. Inside, there are 90.5 pistons and stainless valves and it's fed by an electric fuel pump. It's neatly painted to match the bodywork and dressed with plenty of chrome dress-up, including the louvered firewall in back. It runs superbly and moves the lightweight bodywork with genuine gusto. The lowered stance looks awesome and doesn't kill ride quality, thanks to the later chassis components, all of which are in good condition. Sway bars have been added at both ends to sharpen up the handling and this Beetle also offers front disc brakes, a worthwhile upgrade. Chrome Minilite style wheels are an awesome look and wear staggered 165/80/15 front and 225/60/15 rear blackwall radials. Documented with a stack of receipts, this neat little Bug is a lot of fun to drive and has a custom look that will get attention all out of proportion to its sticker price. Finding a clean one today is not all that easy, and while they're affordable at the moment, given the way VW Bus prices have skyrocketed, it's probably only a matter of time before the Beetle joins them. This 1978 Beetle convertible represents the waning days of the Beetle. Although they were technically still in showrooms into 1980, the writing was on the wall. Fortunately, VW kept the recipe the same, and it offers the same great looks and fun attitude that had always characterized the charming little car from Wolfsburg. White is a classic Beetle color, and it accents the clean, straight sheetmetal on this particular example. It shows some patina, but no damage or signs of neglect, and for a Volkswagen fan, the look of the rounded shape is timeless, although the Super Beetle did offer numerous improvements. Chrome bumpers, oversized parking and tail lamps, and a curved windshield distinguish the Super Beetle, but it'll never be mistaken for anything else, and they're in very good condition overall, particularly for a mostly original car. Inside, there's a nicely finished black interior which remains almost entirely original. The seats are supportive buckets flanked by matching door panels that offer handy map pockets, a useful feature that disappeared way too soon. The single round speedometer with its integral fuel gauge is highly visible and fully functional, reinforcing the Beetle's quirky nature, but I don't think Bug fans would want it any other way. The carpets are much too nice to be original, particularly in a convertible, and we're guessing that perhaps the seat covers have been replaced as well simply because they're in great shape. A Pioneer AM/FM/CD stereo head unit has been fitted in the dash, which also features a burled walnut applique that seems a little out of place here in the modestly-priced VW. Overhead, Karmann's high-quality workmanship is most apparent in the fully insulated and lined convertible top, which folds easily and seals out noise almost as well as a hardtop would. The front trunk area is fully upholstered with black carpets that suggest that this little Beetle has been well-loved its entire life. At 1600cc, the VW flat-four isn't going to win any drag races, but its peppy demeanor and legendary reliability have their own appeal which Volkswagen enthusiasts understand only too well. It's neatly maintained, and offers a carburetor instead of fuel injection, as most VW fans prefer. There are signs of regular maintenance, and if you cover the basics, these cars will practically run forever. It starts quickly with that characteristic VW whistling exhaust sound, and once you master the notoriously vague 4-speed shifter, you'll discover that it's a lot of fun to drive. It's mostly original underneath and the floor pans look OK, although there's a bit of surface scale on the heavy metal parts. The Super Beetle received an updated strut suspension that actually rides and handles much better than the earlier setup and standard steel wheels wear brightly polished hub caps and correctly-sized Kumho radials. Still inexpensive and fun, the VW Beetle is an iconic car that anyone can afford. Better yet, its simple mechanicals and plentiful parts mean that you can enjoy it practically forever. This showroom-fresh 1973 VW Super Beetle is still an excellent, economical way to join the hobby, but the way the market is moving, it just might be a smart investment, too. You should buy a good one while they're still affordable! Is there anything about the VW Beetle that hasn't already been said? There's more than one reason why they have endured for decades as the world's most popular car, and this one makes it easy to understand why they've recently started taking off as legitimate collectables. The cheeky good looks impressive build quality all work together to make one fun little hobby car, especially when they wear bright colors that only the Beetles seem to be able to pull off. This Beetle has a fresh restoration with less than 200 miles on it, and you'd be hard-pressed to find one that's closer to factory-new than this. The fact that it has spent most of that life in a warm climate has certainly helped keep it looking good, and with more than $25,000 in receipts, the restoration was comprehensive. The paint is beautifully done, probably nicer than new, with a deep gloss, smooth bodywork, and nice panel gaps, which are a VW hallmark. Everything lines up neatly and the doors open and close with a precision that belies the car's affordable price tag. The Super Beetle offered a curved windshield, larger indicator lights, and subtly reshaped body panels, along with the big chrome bumpers, all of which remain in excellent condition. Like I said, if you want one that's like new, this is an excellent choice. The black interior is an excellent contrast to the bright red bodywork, and it's hard to deny that the combination doesn't look great. The Super Beetle was upgraded inside, as well, including a more stylish instrument panel, although it still embraced the single gauge motif. The hardware has a no-nonsense vibe and everything looks basic but feels expensive, typical of German cars of the period where the quality was tangible in everything you touched. The upholstery, carpets, and door panels are all in excellent condition with zero wear with so few miles on the restoration, and it's faithful to the way it came originally, including radio delete. The front trunk area is tidy and clean, and there's enough room for a few overnight bags, just in case you'd like to have an adventure in your new Beetle. The familiar air-cooled flat four engine is a big part of the Beetle's appeal, with its bulletproof reliability and familiar whistling exhaust note. During the restoration, this one was punched out to 1641 cc thanks to a set of larger cylinder jugs, but otherwise it's built to stock specs. It's beautifully detailed with a chrome air cleaner and correct details like the carburetor, oversized generator, and Bosch distributor cap. It starts easily with that distinctive VW starter chatter, idles nicely, and delivers plenty of performance for around-town errands. Stir the 4-speed manual properly and it's even entertaining to drive, thanks to a stable suspension and decent brakes. It was built to be enjoyed, with all the suspension components being powdercoated for durability and the floor pans were sandblasted bare and finished with spray-on bedliner material. Just look at the photos! Original steel wheels are nicely restored and offer a factory-correct look wrapped in skinny 160/80/15 Nexen radials. You'll probably find that everyone is your friend when you drive a Beetle, and they simply don't come much nicer than this. This nicely finished 1969 Volkswagen Beetle isn't wildly modified, but bright red paint definitely makes it stand out in the crowd. It also offers the charm of the early, pre-Super Beetle era, including small marker lights and a flat windshield, which are preferred by collectors. Bright red paint looks great on the trademark Beetle curves, but to really make it shine, you need to get a straight one. Unfortunately, a lot of folks don't think VWs are worth the restoration investment, and that's why you need a good, clean original. Even though the paint is now a few years old, it's obvious that this was always a good, clean southern car and the paint has held up quite well despite this being a car that's hard to resist when the sun is shining. This unmolested Beetle fits together extremely well and the doors open and close with just a light touch. There's a single strip of bright trim running the length of the body that dresses it up, and the rest of the chrome appears to have an excellent original patina. The interior is handsomely fitted with reproduction black seat covers on the original high-back bucket seats. Black door panels, a new set of black carpets, and a repainted dash make it feel young again, but you can't shake the wonderful vintage feeling of grabbing that big, thin-rimmed steering wheel and stubby 4-speed shifter. The simple single gauge offers speed and fuel level, but precious little else, but these cars tend to be so reliable that keeping a constant eye on them isn't really necessary. There's a JVC AM/FM/cassette unit that's probably been there for decades, and since it's a life-long warm-climate car, it has never needed a heater, which is always a source of problems anyway. Up front, the trunk has been fitted with new gray carpets, a pair of speakers, and a spare tire. Overhead, there's a recent white convertible top and matching boot, which give the Bug a jaunty, bright look. The 1600 cc flat-four has obviously been recently reworked and drives superbly today. There's a fresh carburetor, new ignition tune-up parts, and a custom pulley on the crank. It still makes all the right sounds, and the smooth-running engine easily keeps up with modern traffic out on the road. Underneath, the chassis is reasonably clean thanks to living in a warm climate, and this is one of those rare Beetles that has not been endlessly modified over the years. Instead, it has a stock suspension, brakes that are surprisingly effective given its light weight and modest performance, and even a proper OEM-grade muffler that generates the trademark VW whistling exhaust note. Bright chrome wheels look a lot like vintage Minilites, which were popular back when this car was new, and they wear rather larger 205/60/15 front and 215/60/15 blackwalls that give it a nice ride and handling boost. Beetles still represent a huge amount of fun for the money, and this lovely convertible is one of those simple little cars that has simply been properly maintained and cherished all its life and offers a lot of fun for the money. This cheerful yellow 1973 VW Super Beetle is still an economical way to join the hobby, and you'll quickly find that there's a large group of folks out there who still think these are wonderful cars. Is there anything about the VW Beetle that hasn't already been said? There's more than one reason why they have endured for decades as the world's most popular car, and this one makes it easy to understand why they've recently started taking off as legitimate collectables. The cheeky good looks impressive build quality all work together to make one fantastic hobby car. This Beetle has been lovingly maintained, and the fact that it has spent most of that life in a warm climate has helped. The 2013 repaint is pretty close to the original color and looks exactly right on the vintage runabout. Everything lines up neatly and the doors open and close with a precision that belies the car's affordable price tag, and while it's not a show car, it still looks great. The Super Beetle offered a curved windshield, larger indicator lights, and subtly reshaped body panels, but the overall look is pure Beetle. The only notable upgrade are the interesting flat taillights which look like the originals at first glance but have a very different look in profile. We've never seen those before. The tan interior is an excellent complement to the bright yellow bodywork, and on warm days it's a lot more comfortable than black. On the other hand, that might be academic, since this one enjoys an aftermarket A/C system that keeps the interior comfortable. The Super Beetle was upgraded inside, as well, including a more stylish instrument panel, although it still embraced the single gauge motif. All the switchgear has a very no-nonsense look typical of German cars of the period and the leather-wrapped steering wheel has a substantial feel. The upholstery, carpets, and door panels are all in good condition with very little wear, having been replaced in 2013, and it includes an AM/FM/CD stereo system with remote that actually sounds pretty darned good. The forward-mounted trunk is a little scruffy, but it does show the original color, carries a correct spare tire, and the car comes with a tow bar setup that makes it easy to move, even if you don't have a trailer. The engine was rebuilt a few years ago to stock specifications, and the 1600 cc flat-four still whistles along without complaints. With just a few thousand miles on the rebuild, it's an excellent runner that feels strong, especially with a rebuilt 4-speed manual transmission behind it. It starts easily with that distinctive VW whistling exhaust note, and delivers adequate performance for around-town errands. The A/C was very neatly installed to make it look almost OEM under the hood and you can see quite clearly that there's a lot of new stuff there, including the big generator. Stir the 4-speed manual properly and it's entertaining to drive, thanks to a stable suspension and decent brakes, which never seem to work very hard on the lightweight VW. It's original underneath, so it's not perfect, but it's just about right for a car you're going to want to drive. Stock steel wheels were painted to match the body and wear recent 165/80/15 radials that are just the right size. You'll probably find that everyone is your friend when you drive a Beetle, and the way the market is moving, they won't be this affordable for much longer. If you've been watching the auctions and price guides, you know that these early Beetles are on the move, and this one has the right look to make it a wonderful addition to your collection. The two-tone silver over black paint job is your first tipoff that this car is something special. Everyone paints them some bright hue, but the guy who restored this one wanted the details and the quality to speak for him, so he highlighted the bodywork with crisp masking and a modern look. Even though it's an older build, fit and finish are excellent thanks to a combination of legendary quality from the factory and a careful restoration. All the early VW design cues are there, from the flat windshield to the small marker and tail lights, and I especially like the single fog lamp up front. The shine is just right and has an attention-grabbing look that's unique without distracting from the vintage VW look that everyone loves so much. This is an extremely nice little Beetle. We'll use the word "new" a lot inside, where the interior has been completely refinished. The low-back buckets are a nice find and a welcome change from the high-back chairs that most of us are used to seeing in later Beetles, and they're covered in cloth and vinyl covers that look period but work well in the modified Bug. Factory-style carpets and matching black door panels are utilitarian but accurate, and again, it's the quality that stands out more than the design itself; the car just feels substantial. The original dash has just the big speedometer with integral fuel gauge, but that's all you need in the world's most reliable air-cooled automobile, although the custom steering wheel wheel is a whimsical addition that works with the custom pinstripe work on the dash. A modern JVC AM/FM/CD stereo lives in the dash, powering speakers in custom enclosures in the kick panels and in back. Up front there's a clean trunk with what appears to be a new gas tank. The 1641cc flat-four was rebuilt and upgraded, so it's ready to enjoy the moment it rolls off the trailer. While it was on the engine stand, it was filled with new internals that ensure long-term reliability, along with a set of EMPI big bore heads, dual carburetors, and after it was finished, the engine and engine compartment were polished up. From the shiny pulleys on the factory generator to the trick little air cleaners and original fan shroud, it has a well-planned look that is just a weekend's worth of polishing away from being show-ready. It starts quickly and the EMPI exhaust system still has that famous VW whistling exhaust note that is a big part of the Beetle's charm. The floor pans are quite good and apparently original, which is hardly a demerit in the VW world, and the suspension was lowered to give it that California look. Cool polished EMPI wheels have the look of an early Torque Thrust but use the unique VW wide-five bolt pattern and carry slightly oversized radials to really fill the fenders. Nicely finished, very attractive, and quite reasonably priced, this Beetle still represents everything that makes these cars great hobby vehicles. Early models like this 1965 coupe seem to command a premium, offering the original VW experience with a healthy dose of nostalgia. Restored several years ago, with an absolutely spectacular interior and a lot of fun period accessories, this lovely little Bug is a wonderful way to enjoy the greatest hobby on earth without a huge up-front investment. Nobody said that having fun in an old car has to be expensive, right? Finished in an attractive and period-correct light green, this bright little Beetle is perhaps the world's most recognizable car. The paint and bodywork have been done to proper standards; not over-restored, but rather about what you'd get if you walked into a VW dealership in 1965 and took it home. Assembly quality was quite good, and the stories about Beetles being so tight they can float turned out not to be 100% true, but they do fit together quite well. Door gaps are flush, the hood fits snugly and doesn't wiggle out on the road, and the rear deck lid follows the body's contours precisely. Other cool details include the accessory roof-mounted luggage rack, bumper guards, headlight visors, and the popular small taillights that make the early cars so easy to spot. For a low-priced car, the VW designers certainly gave the interior an upscale look. Materials and workmanship are extremely high quality throughout, and while accommodations are cozy, Bugs are always bright and airy inside. Beautifully fitted two-tone seat covers, tightly knit carpets, and crisply rendered door panels make is a pleasure to be behind the wheel. And speaking of the steering wheel, it is nicely restored and frames the simple instrument panel, which consists of a speedometer and separate fuel gauge, which is unique to early cars. Other cool details include the basket-like storage shelf under the dash, a newer digital AM/FM/iPod radio, and seat belts, which were still optional on many cars in 1965. The forward-mounted trunk offers decent storage space as well as a full-sized spare with correct remote inflation hose and a proper mat that shows off the VW's impressive build quality. Beetles will take you anywhere you need to go, as long as you have the time. The 1300 cc flat-four makes modest horsepower, but as everyone knows, they're completely indestructible and reasonably peppy around town. This one has been rebuilt and nicely detailed, and shows only slight signs of use. It starts easily with that characteristic VW whistling exhaust note and you'll probably that driving it feels familiar after only a few miles. The carburetor wears a correct air cleaner and not some aftermarket piece, the big generator is still making electricity, and, and the ignition components look quite authentic. The underbody is remarkably solid and tidy with a nicely finished floor pan that doesn't show any of the usual issues, the brakes are rebuilt, and it rides on a newer set of wide whitewall radials on nicely painted wheels. This high-quality Beetle is welcome at almost any vintage event, and it always puts a smile on the faces of the driver and passers-by alike.
