Instead, we suggest something more like this 1980 FJ40 Land Cruiser, which has a correct OEM look but serious V8 power lurking underneath. Fast, formidable, and still quite capable, this is the Land Cruiser you've always hoped to own. 1980 was nearing the end of the line for the Land Cruiser, making this one of the youngest trucks you can buy if you're into FJ40s. Of course, the look didn't change all that much over the decades, so it still looks like a box on wheels, but isn't that the whole point? This one was treated to one of those high-quality restorations just a few years ago and still looks great. The off-white paint is exactly the right choice on an FJ simply because that's how most of them looked when they were thumping across the plains of Africa. There are a few signs of use, of course, because this truck was built to be driven and enjoyed, but it's also obvious that it was loved and well-maintained. Most of the trim has been painted silver to add a little contrast but still keep it looking rugged and the fender flares were installed to protect the bodywork from the somewhat oversized tires. And yes, you still get the usual array of hooks, attachments, and heavy-duty hardware that made these trucks famous. It's a bit more functional inside than the usual Land Cruisers, mostly due to a set of comfortable leather bucket seats with Simpson harnesses to keep you in place. However the rest is still heavy-duty field-ready hardware, including bare painted floors and a stout-looking roll cage encircling the passenger compartment. There's also a locking center console that was a nice aftermarket addition as well as some neatly-trimmed door panels that are a little more factory-looking than some of Toyota's early stuff. And, of course, you get the cool folding side-facing rear seats that can carry another four passengers or a ton of cargo. The oversized steering wheel is authentic and the gauges are recent VDO dials that keep an eye on the strong-running V8 under the hood. No radio, no A/C, no power windows, but that isn't the point here, is it? Instead you get a clean look and low maintenance. A fair trade. The original six is gone, replaced by 350 cubic inches of Chevy crate motor. It's a neat fit in the FJ40, and when fitted with fuel injection, it's the ideal partner for crawling through the rough stuff. Painted black and white to match the bodywork, it almost looks factory, don't you think? The original air cleaner up top is certainly a nice touch. There's a giant radiator up front that keeps it cool easily and all the hardware is new, from the power steering to the alternator to the 4-wheel disc brakes. There's a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission tucked up under the skid plate, which is flanked by a pair of Flowmasters, so this one sounds unique, that's for sure! Original axles at both ends don't seem to mind the Chevy's added torque and none of the Toyota's original off-roading abilities have been compromised in the conversion. It's just faster and more powerful. Big 285/75/16 Toyo off-road radials have been installed, wrapped around a set of black powdercoated steel wheels that add to the butch look. Just as capable as ever, but with more power and speed, this is the FJ you could drive every day and which will become your go-to machine when the going gets tough. But this Japanese-American hybrid 1970 Land Cruiser successfully crosses the Pacific with its box-shaped bodywork that's instantly identifiable on six of the seven continents, plus an equally famous Chevy small block V8. This FJ was built to climb any mountain, conquer any road, and leave a smile on the face of everyone it encounters. It's hard to call the FJ "styled" because it's simply the bare minimum required to carry people and gear to inhospitable places. However, that's it's appeal, a go-anywhere, do-anything kind of vehicle that has become iconic with its abilities. The familiar desert tan paint is like a uniform for these trucks, and when combined with the proper off-road gear and oversized rolling stock, it looks flat-out awesome. Fit and finish is great on this tough off-roader, with shiny paint and Toyota build quality that you can still feel when you hit the trails. The body is quite solid with no issues in the usual places, and the truck obviously hasn't been beaten to death on the trails. There's a heavy-duty bumper/winch combo up front ostensibly designed to push large objects out of its way, as well as winch to pull you out of tight spots. Out back there's a massive full-size spare spare tire and correct M/T rim, some cool little taillights, and a 3-way tailgate. The interior is about as to-the-point as you'd expect, with wide, comfortable front bucket seats and a simple bench in back. Sure, all the hard panels like the dashboard are painted to match the body but it's easy to get comfortable in there for long hauls along the trail. For durability, the floors have been treated to a spray-on bedliner and the roll bar behind the seats is also part of the roof's support structure. All the controls save for perhaps the shifter are original Toyota, including the big steering wheel that makes it easy to put the front wheels exactly where you want them. The factory gauges are still in place, too, augmented by a white-faced oil pressure gauge under the dash that is more compatible with the Chevy V8 up front. The shifter manages the 4-speed manual gearbox underneath and it's neatly integrated into the interior, with the shifter for the 2-speed transfer case right next to it. And yes, you do get a full soft top and doors, just in case of inclement weather. A few years ago when this FJ was fully restored, the original inline-six was yanked and a crate 350 cubic inch Chevy V8 went into its place under the hood. The swap is not unusual, and the quality of the work means that this off-roader is still just as reliable as it was originally but with about twice the horsepower. Clearly a lot of thought went into the installation, as the alternator is mounted up high and out of harm's way, the reservoirs for the hydraulic clutch and master cylinder are likewise where they'll stay dry, and Wilwood four-wheel disc brakes provide impressive stopping power. A big radiator will keep things under control even during low-speed climbs and service access is still quite good. Underneath, it's still mostly Toyota, with original axles fore and aft suspended on a 2-inch lift that looks awesome and adds ground clearance. A custom exhaust system uses twin Flowmasters out back for a distinctive sound and you can see that the floors are in great shape. Shiny aluminum Mickey Thompson wheels carry giant 35x12.5-15 BFGoodrich off-road radials that look like they could climb Everest. Go ahead, take this one out and tear up some dirt, or some pavement, it won't mind. Icons are like that, and with 350 V8 power matted to a 4-speed, you'll always be the first to the top of the hill. With this one priced well-below it's market counterparts, it won't be with us too long. Well, this 1974 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 might be your last chance to get a great one for anything approaching an affordable price. With prices skyrocketing, this very well finished truck with just 945 miles on the restoration is the one to own now and in the future. The tan paint is only three years old and exactly captures the go-anywhere look that made the FJ40 famous. Actually, they probably never looked this good and if you were using it correctly, it certainly didn't stay this shiny and fresh for long. Fortunately, this one seems to have lived a pretty easy life in the suburbs rather than the Outback, and as a result the bodywork is straight (literally!). Flat-sided sheetmetal makes the FJ40 durable, easy to service, and simple to build but restoring one to this level can be a challenge. Just look at how well the hood fits, the neat flush-fitting doors, and the new weatherstripping used throughout, all signs of a quality restoration that started with good base stock. Contrasting black details like the bumpers, grille, and roof all give it a rough-and-tumble look that's instantly recognizable and while these are easy to customize, this one remains pretty much the way the factory built it. The interior has been given a wholesale makeover that retains the all-business attitude and adds a few luxury touches such as those deeply bolstered leather bucket seats. The rear benches have been upholstered to match, indicating great attention to detail and a respect for history. Spray-on bedliner material is used to make the floor tough and easy to maintain when you're playing in the dirt, and the full roll cage means you don't really have to worry if you get into trouble (although let's hope you never need it). An oversized steering wheel helps keep the wheels pointed forward in the rough stuff and a full array of gauges and simple pull knobs are all the driver needs. There's an industrial-strength heater under the dash, a surprisingly slick-shifting 4-speed manual gearbox, and an aftermarket locking center console for security. No radio (what do they listen to in Zimbabwe, anyway?), no A/C, nothing to hinder its bulletproof reliability, and that's just how true off-roaders prefer it. Toyota's trusty and torquey 3.8 liter inline-six provides unparalleled reliability and plenty of power to move the Land Cruiser with ease. Rebuilt three years ago to original specs, it's ready to work or play and with everything new inside, it should be good to go for another forty years and tens of thousands of miles. The big aluminum radiator is the most obvious upgrade, but everything else is pretty much as the factory intended and it's a very high-quality engine bay. New wiring, a heavy-duty air cleaner, and proper finishes used throughout only reinforce the idea that this is an investment-grade Landie. The 4-speed shifts beautifully and the 4-wheel-drive system works seamlessly to keep you out of trouble. The underside is protected with a dusting of undercoating, there's a new exhaust system, and a modest lift provides room for those oversized Goodyear Wrangler radials and custom wheels. We sell quite a few of these Toyotas and it's been a long, long time since we've seen one this nice. If you've been waiting for the right truck, this is it. Legendary reliability, lots of interior space, and surprisingly civilized road manners make vehicles like this 1987 Land Cruiser a great choice if you like your legends to be practical. This Land Cruiser has been under the care of just two owners and spent all but the last few months in sunny California. As a result, it looks incredible and there are no nasty surprises waiting underneath. You can also be sure that it's been properly maintained and thanks to Toyota reliability, it'll probably outlast us all. The blue bodywork has a utilitarian look that Toyota put to work as their top-of-the-line model, much the way Range Rover did, creating the luxury SUV market we enjoy today. This one isn't soft, however, and its off-roading credentials are rock-solid. The paint is brand new and shines like it did on the sales floor in 1987, panel fit is impressive, kines are clean, all making up a look that is at home on the road or in the mud. The big luggage rack on the roof adds a Daktari look that works best on vehicles like this, but chrome bumpers and tinted windows suggest civilization was never far away. Overall, this is one very nicely presented Land Bruiser. You can see the early stages of the Land Cruiser's gentrification inside, where you have handsome cloth bucket seats and all the creature comforts. The seats are freshly re-covered, carpets have been re-laid, and door panels are original and in remarkable condition for their age. The dash is typical '80s Japan, Inc., with lots of gray plastic and angular shapes, but we dig the big, round gauges and matching A/C vents that add some contrast. Features like a 4-speed manual transmission would disappear when the Land Cruiser moved up-market, but for now, this one retains its off-road superiority. There's an AM/FM/cassette stereo in the dash, the A/C has been upgraded to R134a refrigerant, and there's a tilt steering column that makes it quite easy to get comfortable behind the wheel. Second-row space is impressive and the cargo bay is fully carpeted and opens with a unique two-way tailgate that makes for easy loading. The Toyota engineers were nothing if not thoughtful. Toyota's DOHC 4.2 liter inline-six is silky smooth and perhaps that's why it stayed in service for so long. It's quite tractable with the 4-speed manual transmission and pulls the big 4x4 around without seeming to work very hard. It's not fast, but you know it'll get you wherever you're going regardless of weather or terrain. It has been properly serviced all its life, and if you're familiar with Toyota Land Cruisers, you'll shrug off any concerns of sustained usage because you realize that if you take care of it, this sucker should run for a good, long time to come. The underside is shockingly clean, offering all the evidence that you need that California is the best place to be a motor vehicle. The skid plates, axles, springs, and other hardware all look decades younger than they are and even the exhaust system looks pretty good. Chrome wheels are properly-sized for the Land Cruiser and carry 235/75/15 Dunlop off-road radials. The presentation and practicality of this Land Cruiser is really impressive, and for many of us, it offers just the right balance between luxury and rugged capability.
