The beautiful Light Gold metallic paint and contrasting white top is in great condition with no major imperfections to be found. Inside, the tan cloth and vinyl seats all look presentably original with normal wear visible including the door panels and dashboard that are matched to the exterior of the car and look fantastic. It also should be noted that this car came with a roll of NOS carpet (which is impossible to find), and has been installed to the high standards of the original. The Studebaker Golden Hawk is a two-door pillar less hardtop coupe type car produced by the Studebaker Corporation of South Bend between 1956 and 1958. The raised hood and grille were added to allow space for a 289 cid (4.7 L) V8 with the addition of a McCulloch Supercharger giving the car 275 hp. This improved the car’s top speed, making these the best-performing of the Hawks. This powerful engine in such a light car gave the Golden Hawk a phenomenal power to weight ratio (and performance) for the time. Of 1956 American production cars SPEED AGE magazine tested the Golden Hawk against the Chrysler 300 B, Ford Thunderbird, and Chevrolet Corvette finding that the Golden Hawk could out-perform the others comfortably in both 0-60 mph acceleration and quarter mile times. These well build cars also featured smooth automatic transmissions and “Twin Traction”, (Studebakers version of Posi-traction) rear differentials! From the factory, a fiberglass overlay on the hood was added, which covered a hole in the hood that was needed to clear the supercharger that is mounted high on the front of the engine. The tailfins, now made of metal, were concave and swept out from the sides of the car. The fins were outlined in chrome trim and normally were painted a contrasting color, white on this example. For 1958, the Golden Hawk switched to 14-inch wheels instead of 15-inch wheels, making the car ride a little lower. Other styling changes included a new round Hawk medallion mounted in the lower center of the grille, and the available contrasting-color paint was now applied to both the roof and tailfins. One unique feature was a vacuum gauge on the instrument panel. Padded dash boards were standard. Several minor engineering changes were made for ’58, including revisions to the suspension and driveshaft that finally allowed designers to create a three-passenger rear seat. Earlier models had seating for only two passengers in the rear because the high driveshaft “hump” which necessitated dividing the seat; a fixed arm rest (later made removable because of customer requests) was placed between the rear passengers in earlier models. This is your chance to own 1 of only 800 1958 Golden Hawks produced with far fewer existing today, your neighbors will envy you as well as everyone that lays their eyes on this masterpiece. This is a fine example of the “First American family-size sports car”, ideal for any car lover or a rare addition for any collection.. Sure, the supercharged versions were fun, but this 1956 Studebaker Golden Hawk hardtop now features a stout small block Chevy V8 and all the modern conveniences, without losing its stunning good looks. That's a win-win if you ask us! The Golden Hawk must have been something when it hit the streets in the early 1950s. Where everything else was conservative and staid, the Stude was sleek, low, and beautifully proportioned. It wasn't a sports car, of course, but an early grand touring coupe, making it perfect for a makeover. This one shows excellent bodywork wrapped in a lovely pearl white paint job that's both flashy and sophisticated, perfect for the Hawk's shape. Fit and finish are good all around, and despite a few signs of use and age, it still cuts a dashing profile and draws attention wherever it goes. Chrome and stainless trim is a big part of any '50s car's appeal, and this Studebaker is no exception, offering lots of the bright stuff to really make the details stand out. The grille was similar to other Studebaker products, the subtle hood scoop added a sporty attitude, and the cool little parking lights atop the front fenders are just plain awesome. Then there's the little kick-up behind the doors, the perfect transition into the modest tail fins, and it's finished with "Golden Hawk" script on the trunk lid, just in case you didn't know what it was. The handsome interior has been thoroughly updated, giving it a clean, modern look without losing the spirit of the original design. Bucket seats flank a custom center console, and the original dash has been extensively reworked. A tilt column with a beautiful wood-rimmed steering wheel is elegant and comfortable and the original gauges are replaced with white-faced VDO dials. Amenities like an under-dash A/C unit, cup holders, and a great-sounding AM/FM/CD/iPod stereo are all part of the package. The A/C blows cold, so this is the kind of car you can take on a long-distance haul with ease, and everything inside the car is nicely finished and showing only minimal wear, so it's sure to get its share of complements at shows. The rear seat appears to be original and is strictly for two passengers, and the trunk is definitely big enough for all your gear on a road trip. A reliable 350 cubic inch Chevrolet V8 replaces the original 289, and it likely makes roughly twice the horsepower as the factory mill. It's a clean installation, with much of the wiring tucked neatly out of sight and a lot of color-matched components. There are also some polished aluminum details and upgrades like power steering and power front disc brakes make it feel quite contemporary on the road. The front suspension is a modern Mustang II setup with rack-and-pinion steering, while the TH350 3-speed automatic transmission feeds that might be the stock Studebaker rear end that still hangs on original leaf springs. A muted dual exhaust gives the clean coupe just the right sound and it sits easily on those polished Billet Specialties aluminum wheels with 215/65/15 blackwall radials. Studebakers aren't for everyone, but it's easy to fall for a car that looks this good and runs this well. Maybe go off the beaten track for a while and see what Studebaker's best effort can do. This car was owned since 1972 and parked in an old garage for many years. The guy I bought it from said he drove it a little more than 15 years ago. I put in a new fuel pump, flushed out the tank and rebuilt the carburator but it only runs when pouring gas down the carb. The brakes need to be addressed, there is another master cylinder [not sure it's good] and new wheel cylinders for all 4 wheels. When he painted the car long ago, he patched the front floor boards and used filler to patch the rocker panels. Trunk is solid and has the spare tire. Also, the air cleaner is not in the engine picture but I have it.The outside sheet metal is mostly solid except some blistering behind the rear wheel wells. The drivers cozy wing is cracked but the other glass looks good. The seats were covered and it looks like the orginal gold but worn out factory seat covers are intact. It has a clean Ohio title. The bumpers and bright work are in decent shape for being 58 years old. The tires are about 15 years old but hold air for rolling the car around. The engine is the 289cn. supercharged V8 that was very quick in 1957. This car is mostly complete, no hard parts to find and would be an easy restoration for the Studebaker enthusiast out there. There were only 4356 golden hawks made in 1957 and this is # 429. They just don't make them like this anymore and "you can work on it too"!

This Golden Hawk has been owned and garaged since the 1970's. The car has it's original power train with the McCulloch supercharger. [The bad] The front drivers and passengers floor pan had been poorly patched some time ago. The rocker panels have been patched as well with filler. There is some blistering in both rear quarter panels, before the wheel wells. [The good] The fenders, doors, trunk lid, trunk pan, hood are all solid. Everything is there for a easy restore. No major dings or dents. Looks to be all original sheet metal. The stainless trim looks good and the chrome is driver quality. The seats had been covered in the past but the gold original trim is still beneath for the new owner to match and replace. The engine was running 10 years ago and after a carburetor rebuild, oil change, plug wires and battery it runs once again from a gas can. The gas tank will have to be drained and cleaned. No brakes at present but have an extra master cylinder and wheel cylinders for all four wheels. The car is not drive-able now but could be easily put back on the road. I do have the air cleaner and small gold trim missing on rear quarter that's not pictured.

To those that may not be so familiar, a short potted recap...After the merger of two long established automotive companies in 1955, the Studebaker-Packard Corporation looked to design their own “Finned” car with the development of the 1956 Studebaker Golden Hawk.Raymond Lowey and his design studio were commissioned by Studebaker to design a more “European” styled car. In 1953 Studebaker launched the Starliner Coupe, recognised as "one of the most beautiful cars ever made." Beautiful they were, but powerful, they were not.In 1956, top-of-the-range, Golden Hawk; the evolution of the ’53 model was launched. It also addressed the issue of under-power with the fitment of the Packard 352” engine, producing 275 BHP. Studebaker had succeeded in producing America’s fastest family car in the Golden Hawk. This car was bought in 2007. The last known time it had been “On the Road” was in 1983. The car underwent a 51/2 years body-off restoration, which was completed in April 2012. Whilst not a numbers-matching car, it’s fitted with a fully reconditioned Jack Vines, Packard 352” engine and ‘Ultramatic’ transmission with a 4588-Tru-Cool LPD unit, ensuring the transmission doesn’t overheat. The scale and scope of the restoration work is vast with labor hours topping over 1,100. NOS and Studebaker International’s re-manufactured rear lights, a complete Phantom Auto Works (Rene’ and Bonita Harger) interior – green & white with silver Mylar, black vinyl dash pad, headliner and retainers matched to Studebaker’s most often ordered exterior color combination in 1956, ceramic green & arctic white, to create a dazzling mid-50’s automobile. The glorious fully restored valve radio is linked to twin rear mounted aerials. Complimenting the interior visual aurora is a re-manufactured Shrock Bros. white steering wheel. Front and rear bumpers, headlamp rims, front grills, running and backup lights are just a few of the examples of where new chrome has been sourced. Underpinning this beauty is a stove-enamelled chassis. New components including brake system and brake servo, fully rebuilt front and rear suspensions and electrics provide a small insight to the exhaustive attention and detail driving this magnificent vehicle’s restoration program.Since the car’s complete renovation, it has covered less than 3,300 miles. This car is truly Automotive Art on Wheels!Condition Disclaimer:This vehicle is sold "AS IS" and there are no mechanical guarantees expressed or implied or any other warranties supplied or implied and should be assumed to have some degree of wear.
