While the Roots group was known for small sedans and soft sports cars, Carroll Shelby was muscling out big V8's and highly renowned racing cars. At the time, Rootes was building the Sunbeam Alpine, but was looking for a more exciting and appealing car for the blossoming American youth and performance sports car market. With a British body and American engine and driveline, Carroll Shelby's Cobra was the inspiration behind the Sunbeam Tiger. Two prototype cars were built using Shelby motors and driveline components with Sunbeam Alpine shells. Lorde Roots test drove the cars and immediately approved the project with Jensen Motors in England assembling the cars. The Tiger used a 164 horsepower version of Fords 260-ci small block engine. The combination of light weight and more power from a V8 equalled performance that far exceeded that of the Alpine. This Sunbeam Tiger in particular is a California car that has been restored to perfection. The car is a numbers matching example complete with included documents. Here's your chance at owning a piece of Shelby automotive history.This one is serial number 397 of only 1000 made. I'm the second owner of this Florida car oringanlly Purchased at Jim Peacock Dodge in Daytona. I purchased it Spring 2006 with 21,000 miles now with 29,795 miles! Comes with original documentation , window invoice etc... see pictures. This GLHS is almost 100% original except for the exhaust and the battery (I have the original battery, muffler and catalytic converter). The car was beautifully repainted (window, moldings etc... removed) with 3 coats of paint and 3 coats of clear with an extra coat on the top and hood then wet sanded and buffed to a glass like finish. Interior is in excellent condition. What needs to be done: -The A/C was working when I purchased the car but it has a leak. I removed it since I wasn't using it and reinstalled it for the sale. It will need to be converted to R134a. -The radio works except for the preset station functions. It saw European cars like the Volkswagen GTI making surprisingly strong inroads with performance-minded customers who were hungry for any sort of driving fun. What most of those cars lacked in sheer horsepower was made up for with lively, engaging driving experiences. Carroll Shelby applied that philosophy to the Omni/Charger platform to create the 1983.5 Shelby Charger and Omni GLH (GLH stood for Goes Like Hell). The Shelby Charger was normally aspirated, but the Omni GLH had a 146-horsepower, turbocharged version of Chrysler’s ubiquitous 2.2-liter four–with the Charger receiving the turbo engine in 1985.The Shelby/Dodge experiment culminated with the unexpectedly brilliant 1987 Shelby Charger GLH-S. Shelby’s company purchased the last 1,000 Chargers produced by Chrysler to turn them into the GLH-S models, each identically outfitted in basic black with silver graphics. There was a specific front air dam, and a hood that carried a heat vent and offset blister. Inside, Shelby-logo embroidery was added to the front and rear seats, and a serialized plaque was added to the right-hand corner of the dashboard. With even the plainest of plain-Jane family cars these days offering 300 horsepower, you’d think the GLH-S’s 175 horses wouldn’t be exciting. You’d be very wrong. The Charger GLH-S weighs only about 2,500 pounds, so the power-to-weight ratio is about 14.3 to 1. That’s not too far removed from a new Mustang GT, and it enabled the car to run to 60 mph in about 6.5 seconds and through the quarter-mile in the high 14s. A same-year Camaro IROC 350 ran high-6 seconds to 60, and 15-second quarter miles! There’s considerable turbo lag, but a satisfying and very fun feeling of acceleration when the boost kicks in. The car just plain picks up and goes. It’s also a reasonably smooth engine that is tractable at both high and low speeds. Unfortunately, the rest of the performance features aren’t quite as engaging: The manual transmission is notchy, and the shift feel is rubbery. The minimalist gauges are laughably small, and the steering wheel looks like something from a go-kart. On the road, the GLH-S is quite pleasant to drive. Its 15-inch wheels (which look larger on the comparatively small car) and chunky tires deliver commendable grip, with cornering quite good for an early front-driver. All production models came with air conditioning, a sunroof, and other amenities that are appreciated on long drives. And that brings us to one of the best reasons we can think of to invest in one of these quintessential pocket rockets: Cheap thrills. Buy-in prices are low, but with only 1,000 built, they’re extremely rare sights on the road or at a car show. So, you’ve got a conversation piece that’s an easy driver, and one whose value won’t be affected by adding mileage during the summer. Many of the cars have been modified with later turbo engine parts, so be wary of buying someone else’s hot rod. Also, there are basically no resto parts for the GLH-S, so many enthusiasts resort to cannibalizing wrecked or worn-out donors. The 27,000-mile, all-original example in our photos is a great example of what to look for–it’s clean, unmodified, and runs perfect. If you never thought you could afford an honest-to-goodness Shelby, this is it. In the paragraphs to follow we will give a brief description of the exterior, interior, and driveline of the Ford. We will start off with the exterior of the Mustang. The body is solid and very straight. The fit of the panels is as good as any. It has the GT Hood with proper scoop and striped. The bumpers were changed at the time of the resto as well as some of the Chrome. It has new weather stripping and the glass looks very good. The paint on this car is slick and is covered in the RED with the White Stripes that are up the hood, and down the trunk as well as the GT 350 side stripes. It has the proper mirror on the driver door. This car has slick paint that has a very good shine. It’s sitting on a set of ’65 Shelby R wheels. Next, we will take a look at the interior of the Shelby. On the inside it’s all done mostly in red and done like a ’66 Shelby with Bucket Seats. The back seat has remained within the car. When you look at the dash it has the better looking gauge package. The shifter looks stock with its automatic mated transmission. Next, we will take a look at the Engine bay of this Ford. Under the hood we have the 289 V8 Ford Engine with a New 4 barrel carburator aluminum intake. The Engine runs out very strong and starts easily enough, The engine bay has been given much to detail with many polished and chromed parts added or updated. Including the Polished Radiator to perfection. New Battery, New MSD Ignition, New MSD Coil, New MSD Rotor Cap & plugs, New Alternator, New Cobra Valve covers, New Chrome Air cleaner, New Chrome chassis stabilizer. This cobra was built 2004, and was completed in 2006, it is titled as a 2006 model. It now has 3,450 miles and the car is in immaculate condition inside and out. The car was professionally built sparing no expense under carriage and all. This car is in NEW condition, with 3K miles on its new transmission (5 speed) 3K miles on the rear end (new, Posi-trac) and 3K on the engine (rebuilt for this car, out of a 1993 Ford Mustang COBRA with high compression and upgraded ignition, rings, pistons, heads and intake). This shelby was built to specs, and utilizes custom parts and real cobra parts. The engine gets 5w-30 fully synthetic oil, and premium gas only! It had a supercharger however, it was too powerful and has since been removed. The exhaust system has little restriction hence why it is so loud. The car weights 2300 lbs and It is VERY fast. This car is TONS of fun to drive, and is an attention getter, I always start conversations because of it! The interior has rear A/C cobra style gauges NOT aftermarket cheap replicas. The stereo system is incredible, It has a subwoofer (hidden) and high output AMP in the trunk, The body is all fiber glass the interior is very clean, with custom seats, harnesses and speakers. It has all OEM style COBRA parts. This car also has dual roll bars and push start. ALL OF THE GAUGES work perfectly. This car is made to be driven so it will cruise at 80mph on the highway without hesitation, yet can launch quickly from a stand still! The center caps for the wheels came with a knock off hub option which I did not acquire. overall this car is incredibly fun to own and drive, it is built to be a nice street car but also likes to be pushed from time to time! This car has all of the amenities, looks and feels of a true sports car. The suspension is adjustable and the brakes are cobra manual brakes. The car does have power steering and a hydraulic clutch witch make the driving experience a bit easier! This is a very well built very clean replica. The paint was PROPERLY done in blue with BLUE GHOST stripes blended into the paint. I have a cover which I will include for the next owner and misc extras.
