This nicely crafted replica has all the right parts, a screaming Ford small block, gorgeous paint, and nasty performance, all for about 2/3 of what it took to build it. This particular Cobra is from Shell Valley Companies, and it nails the big block 427 look. The luscious paint only emphasizes the rounded quarters and flared fenders that make this car the most enduring 4-wheeled icon of all time, and the combination of that paint with bright white stripes gives it a vivid overall countenance. Authentic details like the hood scoop, chrome roll hoop, and late-style taillight lenses give this one a flavor of authenticity that some other kits lack. Finish quality is quite good overall, with smooth fiberglass and decent gaps, and if there's one thing these Cobras have going for them is that they feel sturdy on the road. Chrome bumperettes, wind wings on the windshield, and a flip-up gas cap also help add some sparkle that looks absolutely right on the Cobra shape. Low-back buckets with pleated seat covers are the preferred seating of choice in a Cobra; nothing looks stranger than modern seats poking up over the cockpit opening. Nicely finished door panels are a step up from the basic originals and include a functional map pocket that's rather handy. The white stripe continues inside, slashing down through the instrument panel, which uses retro-looking VDO gauges to monitor the warmed-over small block. The wooden steering wheel is matched by a nice-looking glove box lid, which is a useful addition to the Cobra's spec sheet. A stubby aluminum shifter is a lot more effective than the original reversed lever these cars wore in the '60s, and it's linked to a T5 5-speed manual gearbox that shifts beautifully. Carpets add a degree of civility, and even the trunk is nicely finished and usefully shaped. There is no top or weather equipment, but that's really not the point of a Cobra, now is it? Despite the 427 badges, I continue to believe that a small-block-powered Cobra is the nastiest machine on the track. Less weight over the nose in the form of a 351 cubic inch Windsor V8 means crisp handling without giving up that wallop of torque that you expect from a Cobra. Nicely dressed with a Cobra air cleaner and shiny Ford valve covers, the engine great in the Cobra's engine bay and there's nothing here that doesn't make it go faster, including long-tube headers and those awesome side pipes. Other upgrades include aluminum heads that shave precious weight, an Edelbrock intake and Holley carburetor, a mild cam that makes the idle sound wicked, and an electric fan to keep things cool. The box-section chassis is robust and features A-arms and coil-overs up front, along with rack-and-pinion steering, while the 9-inch rear is filled with 3.73 gears on a Track-Lok limited slip. You'll find disc brakes at all four corners, so stopping power is quite impressive and the Halibrand-style wheels look right fitted with tall-ish 235/60/15 front and 295/50/15 BFGoodrich T/A radials. Titled as a 2003, this Cobra is going to sell quickly, just like all the others. If you're an immediate satisfaction kind of guy, take this one home and have fun. The kit is from Lonestar, but it's hard to call a car that was professionally built a "kit." All-new components were used in the build, so this isn't some cadaver-hunting expedition come to life, but a car that was designed to be the best right from the start. Fiberglass Cobra bodywork always needs a little finessing, so they invested the time to get it smoothed it out and everything lined up just right. Then they laid down the silver metallic base, along with slightly darker blue/gray stripes, then buried it all under a few coats of clear. That shine tells you that they also invested a week rubbing and buffing the finish until it had an inner glow that makes people stop in their tracks to get a second look. It's also got all the proper Cobra details, ranging from the oil cooler plumbed into the lower grille opening to the jacking stubs in place of the bumpers to the flip up gas cap out back. Lucas-style taillights make it look authentic, and what Cobra would be complete without a set of side pipes and a roll hoop? The black leather buckets with matching door panels put a distinctly British twist on the usual Cobra attire, but that's entirely appropriate considering that the Cobra was based on the English-built AC Ace. Those ties are tenuous at best with a reproduction Cobra like this, but those lovely leather hides are so buttery soft that you'll find it impossible to resist touching it every time you walk past this car. The wood-rimmed steering wheel is a reproduction unit that could pass for an original and works rather well with the engine-turned dash to create a period performance look. Attractive VDO instruments fill the dashboard in a simple array, and if you think you need a radio in your Cobra, you're probably doing it wrong. However, it does have a tilt steering column so it's easy to get comfortable behind the wheel. The trunk is nicely finished with black carpets and a trick cut-off switch for the rear-mounted battery. The engine is a tried-and-true 302 cubic inch Ford V8, which seems like the right choice in a Cobra like this. Equipped with an Edelbrock intake manifold and a matching 4-barrel carb, it definitely has the blasting powder to make this Cobra move like an original. It's also beautifully dressed in Cobra regalia and the professional build quality shows up in the neat wiring, clean plumbing and race-grade parts, not to mention the impeccable workmanship throughout. It's backed by a 5-speed manual transmission and a 9-inch rear end, so it's plenty rugged and up for some fun. No longer saddled with trying to re-create a 1965 driving experience, cars like this Factory 5 Cobra roadster can now be modern-day supercars, street-legal weapons that have a vintage Cobra look but all the performance that modern technology can deliver. You already know that Factory 5 is putting out some of the best Cobras in the business and building one from scratch isn't a bad idea. But if you're the impatient type or a guy who doesn't feel like investing a small fortune in a custom build, then this car is right up your alley. It's beautifully finished and carries all the hardware that you'd use yourself, all wrapped in a professionally finished body that stops traffic wherever it goes. They spent a ton of time (AKA a big pile of cash) to get the fiberglass straight and then laid down a few coats of Torch Red paint that really makes this Cobra pop. On top of that, it got a set of black stripes that accurately replicate the original look, because a Cobra without stripes just isn't right. Details like the Lucas-style taillights, twin roll hoops, and jacking stubs out back suggest that it was built for combat, and the hardware underneath backs up this assumption. But from the look of the car as it sits today, we'd be shocked if it ever turned a wheel in anger. It's simply gorgeous! The interior definitely gets the Shelby thing right, with wrap-around buckets that look suitably vintage and a stubby shifter that's canted forward just right. So you'll get the Cobra experience from behind the wheel. But the gauges are big, handsome Auto Meter dials that watch all the vitals, including oil temperature, which is critical if you're using your Cobra on the track. Toggle switches, a fat leather-wrapped wheel, and leather check straps on the doors further blend the old and new. There's no radio, no heater, no A/C, but why would you want those in your Cobra anyway? Is it for your wife or something? No, this car is all about going fast and doing it with style, and in that regard it's a massive success. There are carpets to help control noise and heat and yes, the trunk is neatly upholstered using the same stuff. Big blocks get all the attention, but in a Cobra actually built to drive, a sweet-running 5.0 is really what you want. Less weight up front means razor-sharp handling and the 5.0's penchant for making torque is undiminished in this Cobra replica. There's a big 4-barrel carburetor up top, so it makes a wonderful intake moan at full tilt and the dress-up kit lends a bit of authenticity to the look. A big aluminum radiator keeps it cool, there's a reliable serpentine belt drive setup for the accessories, and satin black side pipes provide the same awesome soundtrack Cobra fans have enjoyed for 50 years (chrome side pipes are included with the car, but do you really need them?). A 5-speed manual gearbox provides an overdrive gear for somewhat relaxed high-speed cruising and there's a Mustang-spec 8.8-inch rear end out back. The suspension is full of upgraded components like tubular A-arms and coil-over shocks, so this isn't some cut-rate build, and massive disc brakes from a Mustang Cobra provide shockingly strong braking. Black Torque Thrust-style wheels are the perfect touch and they're wrapped in 275/40/17 front and 315/35/17 rear performance radials. So forget building your own, this one is available right now. Get in, turn the key, and be competitive at almost any level, show or track. That's what this Cobra does best. The finish quality of the fiberglass is superior to most kits, and thanks to the exceptionally strong methods of construction Shell Valley uses, including Kevlar reinforcements, it's as solid as a rock. Midnight Blue with white pearl stripes is iconic on the sleek little roadster, and without knocking your knuckles on the bodywork, there's just no way to tell if this is a reproduction. There are zero signs that this snake has been driven, with the paint showing extremely well; even the rocker panels and areas behind the rear wheels are devoid of road rash. Other details include front and rear jacking stubs, a real LeMans-style fuel filler, and a roll hoop behind the driver. If you've wanted a Cobra, this one is put together just the way you'd do it yourself. Inside it's standard Cobra fare, with basic black leather buckets, simple black carpet and minimalist door panels. The whole point is simplicity and distilling the driving experience down to its barest essence, and at that the Cobra excels. Simple VDO gauges keep an eye on the engine and look suitably old school, and there's a Hurst shifter and cue ball knob in the center of the compartment. Yes, it's basic, and that means no A/C, no heater, and no radio, but on the other hand you get exhilarating performance and that old-school performance feel. The wood-rimmed Shelby-style wheel looks gorgeous and telegraphs the front tires' activities directly to your palms and the pedals are arranged so the heel-toe dance is easy. And unlike many replicas, this one offers a very neatly finished trunk with black carpets and a gel cell battery tucked into the corner. If you want to drive a Cobra regularly, a small block will make it insanely fast without feeling bulky. The 351 cubic inch Ford Windsor V8 is plenty stout, with a wide torque curve and a willingness to rev. But it's also easy around town and very user-friendly thanks to an electronic ignition that lights it up almost instantly. Ceramic-coated headers lead to a set of side pipes that look and sound right and Cobra finned valve covers and a matching air cleaner give it a period performance look that's totally appropriate here. The transmission is a 5-speed manual and the overdrive fifth gear is a welcome addition, making this a car that can genuinely be driven anywhere, anytime. The suspension is a modified A-arm arrangement with coil-overs up front and a 9-inch hanging on trailing arms out back. A heavy-duty frame, 4-wheel disc brakes, and a minimum of frills make this a potent car on or off the track. Gorgeous 17-inch Halibrand-style wheels look pretty authentic but offer a huge performance upgrade in the form of 235/45/17 front and 315/35/17 rear Goodyear radials. I'd call that a pretty good deal. Professionally built, this Daytona coupe is a very accurate representation of the original, right down to the Kamm-back tail and color combination. The body is fiberglass, not aluminum, but that also means it's durable and easy to repair and to be honest, it's a lot easier to live with if you actually want to drive the car. Fit and finish are great, worlds better than any of the real Daytona coupes back in the day. Details like the covered headlights, white side pipes, and heat extractor in the middle of the hood are all authentic details that make this replica really pop. The stripes and gumballs give it a track-ready look and even the sliding Plexiglas side windows accurately capture what driving these cars was really like back in the mid-60s. It's pretty accurate inside, too, with '60s style bucket seats and a minimalist approach. The bright blue harnesses are a good idea in a car that generates this much speed and the wood-rimmed steering wheel is a nod to '60s sensibilities, even on the track. The flat-faced dashboard is just how they did it on the real cars, although this one offers a full set of AutoMeter dials that look a bit like vintage Stewart-Warner gauges. One feature you'll be thrilled about is air-conditioning, which wasn't available in the originals, but was sorely needed with those minimalist windows and almost zero insulation. This one is nice and comfortable even on the hottest days, making it a supercar that you can drive anywhere, anytime. The forward-canted shifter looks correct and manages a 5-speed manual, so there's a fairly deep overdrive gear for easy highway cruising. There is no radio, but you'll hardly miss it with those bellowing side pipes at full blast and there's even reasonable storage behind the seats. Believe it or not, the original Daytonas were powered by Hi-Po 289s (not 427s as commonly believed), so the 331 cubic inch 5.0 stroker motor here is the right choice. The engine is dressed appropriately with a Cobra dress-up kit, including a finned air cleaner and matching valve covers. The rest is heavy-duty hardware that makes it reliable as well as comfortable. There's a big radiator up front, a serpentine belt drive system, and hydro-boost for the 4-wheel disc brakes. Underneath, the custom-built chassis offers A-arms with coil-overs up front and razor-sharp handling. It starts easily, idles well, and doesn't get hot or cranky on warm days, so it's a lot more livable and useable than the original, and heck, despite the 17-inch Halibrand style wheels and low-profile 275/40/17 front and 315/35/17 rear tires, it rides pretty darned well. This 1999 Series I represents his vision for a no-compromises performance car, one that combines modern technology with the visceral thrill of the original Cobra. This car is 1 of only 249 units produced in 1999 and thus it carries a correct 17 digit production Vin# versus the cars that were built later on. Exotic, expensive, and with a fascinating story, these cars are a fantastic monument to an extraordinary man. Unlike a lot of builders, Shelby stayed current with technology and didn't marry himself to any brand or style. Just because the Cobras were aluminum, that didn't mean he had to build a 21st century version. Instead, he specified a carbon-fiber body for light weight and strength, and gave it dramatic curves that were not only spectacular to look at, but aerodynamically functional. The big oval air intake feeds the radiator, which vents through the hood, not underneath. Side gills add interest, while the rear view resembles nothing so much as a Ferrari Daytona. It shows 12,761 careful miles and is virtually new in every way. Of note, it has the stripe delete option, which gives it a relatively low-key look, and the way the paint is finished, there's no question this is a collector-quality automobile. The cockpit was engineered around the driver, and from the 2-tone leather seats to the gauges, it's suited to life on the street or the track. These cars were outrageously expensive to start and went up from there, so you know finish quality is exemplary, with neat stitching on the seats, sculpted door panels, and a highly functional dash. But it's much more polished than a Cobra or any small manufacturer's product has a right to be, approaching OEM levels in every way. The investment was impressive and the price tag was breathtaking, but few owners complained. Everything works as it should, and although this is a performance car first, there are no compromises, so it carries A/C, power everything, and a substantial stereo that sounds awesome. A black canvas top stows under the rear deck, but like the Corvette, there is no trunk, save for what you can reach from between the seats. Shelby chose a 4.0 liter Oldsmobile Aurora engine to power his new supercar, and with its aluminum construction and 32-valve architecture, it was truly state-of-the-art. With suitable tweaks, it makes enough horsepower to fling the roadster to the far side of 180 MPH, yet happily idles in traffic without getting hot, try that in your Cobra. The chassis is a tube frame design, full-race, of course, with wishbones and coil-overs at all four corners, along with massive disc brakes. It starts, drives, and idles like an OEM effort due to serious tech help from GM, and it has been properly maintained and serviced from Day One. Custom 3-piece alloys enhance the race look and wear staggered 275/35/18 front and 335/30/18 rear Michelin radials. An incredible effort whose cost-no-object build was both its greatest feature and ultimate downfall, but there's no denying that there are few more potent 2-seaters available for this kind of money.
