In about 2010 the car received an all-encompassing, ground-up restoration, with European specialist Igor Boun of Northern California carrying out the high-quality paint and bodywork. The Wagons exterior sports a Mercedes-Benz code, deep wine metallic finish and the interior has been redone in Palomino MB-Tex weave with bamboo rattan pattern accents in the cargo area.The V-4 engine has been rebuilt; the transmission seals, gaskets, and bearings were replaced as needed. All front-end components and bushings were also replaced, and the front and rear brakes feature new rotors, pads, wheel cylinders, and calipers. The carburetor, wiper motor, brake and clutch master cylinders, starter, alternator, water pump, steering rack, and CV joints were also rebuilt. To complete the look, SAAB Sonett soccer ball alloy sports wheels were added, featuring body-color inserts and polished details. Period whitewall radials add to the 95 Wagons deluxe, vintage look. This brilliantly original 96 comes from long term ownership of a Vintage Saab Club member and the odometer shows a believer original 40,600 miles. The V4 engines runs a Weber 34ICH carburetor and Pertronix ignition, but is otherwise stock. The transmission is a 4-speed manual with column-mounted shifter. The brakes are disc up front and drum rear, and Saabs unique freewheeling feature can be engaged or disengaged.The Saab 96 was manufactured from 1960 to 1980, initially with Saabs three-cylinder, two-stroke engine. But later cars, like this, were fitted with the Ford Taunus four-stroke V4 for better performance and to dispense with the need to mix oil with the gas. The 96 featured an aerodynamic two-door body with styling and details that could only come from Saabs aircraft manufacturing heritage. The Saab 96 was driven most famously by Erik Carlsson, in many international rallies. His most famous successes were first in the 1960, 1961 and 1962 RAC Rallies and first in the 1962 and 1963 Monte Carlo Rallies. It was these successive, top-level victories that put the Saab 96 'on the map' and established its reputation for reliability and toughness.Our car is reported to have had one very high quality respray in the original Polar White, but the car is otherwise original. The car sports a pair of Hella driving lamps and factory mud guards, and it still has the original radio. The original window sticker is present.
