Greetings to All!! imotors is quite pleased to offer possibly one of the nicest 1986 Rolls Royce Silver Spurs available. I am handling the sale of this Rolls Royce, and also a 1959 Bentley R Type for a close lady friend whose husband passed away back in mid 2014. Jim was an English car guy, and loved Jaguars and Rolls Royce's. These folks were long time members of both clubs, and participated with the cars for many years. Jim was also a JCNA Concours Judge!! We were good friends for many years! I will do the best I can do describe them accurately, but my information is limited as to what I have personally learned and observed. I have no long term history or documents. If she finds anything, I will pass it along! I sold them this car back around 2008 or so. It was driven sparingly over the years, due to Jim's illness, and along with the fact that he had several other collector cars that he drove. This one had a major service done in 2009, when ALL of the soft parts(belts, hoses, and seals etc.), along with tune up parts and injectors etc. I am not sure of the mileage that has accrued since then, but it certainly couldn't be many! I retrieved it from the house garage in late September. Our expert mechanic did an oil and filter change, along with a safety inspection, and an A/C service. The tyres were replaced about 3 or 4 years ago, and are still very close to new. It was professionally detailed, and is just Gorgeous!! This is a very nice running and Driving Rolls Royce that is ready for the next lucky owner to enjoy! The photos below will tell the cosmetic story quite well. There is no weather or rust damage, and the everflex top appears to be bump free. the leather is gorgeous as is the wood which has some light cracking present on a few panels, but not all. Notice the rear entertainment system that was installed at the factory when new. Jim had it updated to a modern DVD player!! Please do not request donations: The following is only part of an article featuring this car in Car Collector Magazine plus a Rolls Royce book Featuring this car on the cover and great details in the chapter about it. This one-off example was designed and bodied by H. J. Mulliner for Mrs. Sybil Rhodes, an American married to British industrialist Frank E. Rhodes. In the prewar years, and for many years after, Rhodes made his fortune in concrete, paving the motorways crisscrossing Great Britain. It is believed that Sybil owned a French sports car when she lived in the United States; however, it was never shipped to the Rhodes estate in England. One person suggested that Frank Rhodes was not happy with the French after the war and would not permit anything French on his property (thus we would assume his wine cellar was stocked with bottles from the White Cliffs of Dover). With Sybil’s affection for French styling one can see the influence of esteemed Paris salons such as Franay and Saoutchik in the H. J. Mulliner design, particularly the rear deck (boot) with its beautiful chrome fin. The entire body is aluminum under which is the early, whisper-silent, Rolls-Royce straight six coupled to a four-speed manual transmission. A close-coupled design, the rear is taken up by a wonderfully British traveling cocktail bar. The Long Road to Restoration Owned today by a renowned Pennsylvania collector , the car has been restored to its original H. J. Mulliner design and color scheme. The owner, who is known for his meticulous restorations had spent years and over 5000 hours producing a most magnificent car to it glory, admitted that he had not intended this car to be quite such a project. “I got it from Florida and started working on it, cleaning it up; I figured I would just turn it into a nice driver,” he recalls. But as is often the case with a restoration, one thing led to another. There was more to this car than originally met the eye. “Along the way, I acquired original plans and other documents that made me more and more interested in this new project. A lot of times with coach built cars changes are made that never get noted in the original plans. This car was originally supposed to have a dickey seat (rumble seat) behind the passenger compartment. At some point this was changed and a full length trunk was put in its place. Also, they had designed the spare tire to be inserted through the license plate door, but that would never have worked based on the size of the spare, so that design was changed as well. But the most significant factors about the car were masked under years of old paint and restoration work.” As the restoration team began prepping the car they discovered original details that may have been covered over for as long as 30 years. While stripping the paint (many layers including the visible coats of blue, yellow and then the original black) they found holes running down the center of the trunk, as well as along the trailing edges of the rear fenders. “These were details that had been removed and the holes filled,” says the owner. “At about the same time we discovered a few rusty pieces of metal in a box in the trunk. We didn’t even know that there was a built in box in the trunk, but found it recessed far forward of the rear axle and covered over. It was then that we started to realize maybe we had something even more special than we already knew.” Those rusty pieces of metal turned out to be parts of an original deck lid fin. There were also a couple of threaded bolts that matched the uncovered holes. By placing advertisements on the Internet, and in British newspapers both in and around the area of the old Rhodes Estate, letters started coming in. “During our research we found out that there were more than the one set of plans at Hunt House (storage of Rolls-Royce records). The second plan showed the elimination of the Dickey seat and a different arrangement of the refreshment (liquor and wine) cabinet. Later there was a note that was in conflict with the original plans. The note called for the placement of the spare tire forward in the boot behind the passenger seat. The prior plan shows its placement to the aft of the trunk, in a well. The measurement for the opening to house the spare was actually several inches shorter than the spare tire!” The owner managed to contact the son of the Rhodes family chauffeur who had lived at Thorpe Underwood Hall, the Rhodes’ palatial country estate. Further letters and calls noted that sometime in the late 1950s or early 1960s Mrs. Rhodes had an accident with WGC48 that damaged the left front fender, left rear fender and rear of the boot. The car was disposed of shortly thereafter. It is believe that the damaged Silver Wraith was sold to Myers- Brunell, which handled Rolls-Royces and had an extensive fabricating shop. The car was repaired; however, the side trim and center boot molding were not replaced. The holes were filled in and the sections sprayed in black. It was shipped to the United States where it found a new owner. Since then this French influenced Silver Wraith has remained in the U.S., the country where its original owner was born. Entire Agreement - The terms and conditions memorialized in this Sales Agreement comprise the complete, entire and final agreement between Buyer and Seller. No other terms, negotiations, proposals, representations, commitments, understandings or agreements between Buyer and Seller, either written or oral, shall be valid or enforceable, unless expressly contained in the Sales Agreement. The Sales Agreement may be modified or amended only upon express written consent of both parties. 2. "AS IS" - Buyer acknowledges that the automobile contemplated by this transaction is a used automobile and is offered for purchase in its current state, or, "as is." Seller makes no guarantee as to condition, mileage, year, model or any other circumstance regarding the automobile. Buyer acknowledges that the actual condition of the automobile may vary from any photographs, statements or representations made by Seller. Buyer represents that he/she had an opportunity to inspect the automobile prior to purchase and acknowledges that Seller has no responsibility for any defects or repairs, regardless of any representations (oral or otherwise) made by Seller. Furthermore, Buyer acknowledges that Seller will not provide a warranty of any type with regard to the automobile and, therefore, depending on the status of the manufacturers warranty, there may be no warranty of any type covering this automobile. 3. Purchase - Buyer is deemed to have purchased the automobile upon satisfaction of each of the following events: (1) Buyer and Seller have executed this Sales Agreement; (2) Seller has issued the registration (either Pennsylvania or in transit registration); (3) Buyer has executed the "Buyers Guide"; (4) Buyer has paid, in full, for the automobile; and, (5) Buyer has taken possession of the automobile. Buyer shall be deemed to have taken possession of the automobile, and therefore, any and all risks associated with possession, at the time the automobile is removed from Sellers premises, either by Buyer, Buyers agent or shipper (regardless or whether Seller arranged shipping on Buyers behalf). 4. Limited Warranty - THERE ARE NO WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, WRITTEN OR ORAL, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR ANY PARTICULAR PURPOSE. SELLER HEREBY DISCLAIMS ANY AND ALL REPRESENTATIONS AND WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND (WHETHER ARISING BY IMPLICATION OR BY OPERATION OF LAW). THIS SECTION SURVIVES THE TERMINATION OR CANCELLATION OF THIS SALES AGREEMENT. 5. Limitation of Liability - SELLERS LIABILITY FOR ANY LOSS OR DAMAGE ARISING OUT OF OR RESULTING FROM OR IN ANY WAY CONNECTED TO THIS TRANSACTION OR THE AUTOMOBILE CONTEMPLATED BY THIS TRANSACTION SHALL NOT EXCEED BUYERS PURCHASE PRICE, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER SUCH LIABILITY ARISES IN CONTRACT (INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, FAILURE OR DELAY IN PERFORMANCE OR DELIVERY DUE TO ANY CAUSE WHATSOEVER), TORT (INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, NEGLIGENCE OR STRICT LIABILITY) OR OTHERWISE. IN NO EVENT IS SELLER RESPONSIBLE TO BUYER FOR ANY INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, EXEMPLARY OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, ALL DIRECT OR INDIRECT COSTS, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER THOSE DAMAGES WERE FORSEEABLE. Force Majeure - Seller shall not be liable for failure or delay in performance hereunder due in whole or in part to (i) acts of God, (ii) strikes, lockouts, or other labor disputes, (iii) civil commotion, sabotage, fire, flood, or explosion, (iv) acts of any governmental agency or authority, (v) unforeseen circumstances (vi) inability to obtain or delay in obtaining any necessary governmental approvals, permits or licenses, (vii) mechanical failure, (viii) or any other cause which is not within the reasonable control of Seller, whether or not of the kind specifically enumerated above. 7. Choice of Law, Jurisdiction & Venue - The transaction to which this document relates shall be governed by the substantive laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. In the event of any dispute between the parties arising out of this transaction, the parties agree and consent that the exclusive jurisdiction and venue for the resolution of such dispute shall be Pennsylvanias Court of Common Pleas, Montgomery County, or the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. 8. Notices - No notice or other communication is sufficient to affect any rights, remedies or obligations of either party unless the notice or communication is in writing and (as elected by the party giving the notice or communication) is (i) personally delivered, (ii) transmitted by facsimile (with a receipt acknowledgment), (iii) transmitted by electronic computer mail, (iv) transmitted by a recognized courier service or (v) mailed in registered or certified form, to the party to which notice or communication is being given. Notice shall be delivered to the address specified below. 9. General - In the event that any provision contained herein is held to be invalid or unlawful, such provision shall be severed from the remaining provisions, which shall remain in full force and effect. 1929 ROLLS ROYCE 20 Twenty Tourer H.J. Mulliner with documentationI took this car out today for a 10 mile drive! Temp up to 70C on an 80F degree daywith no troubles. Drives straight and stops as it should. Oil pressure in engine is good is at 20 - 25 psi as you go down the road. Gauge only goes to 30psi. I have Docs (chassis Gen 77 engine and oil pan U3K) supporting that this is the original engine with chassis and dyno charts from the factory. Chassis also has a plate that says gen77 underneath at the foot pedal area. Frame is rust free, fenders and body are factory aluminum, engine compartment is gorgeous, and the doors open and close excellent. Interior is nice and has tan leather seats with no rips. It is a 4 speed, right hand drive car that is a beautiful piece of history. This car can be enjoyed as is or a perfect candidate for a full restoration. I have detailed documents from the Rolls Royce Enthusiasts Club (RREC) located in the UK and from some previous owners. The history is as follows (the best I can determine): This unique car was originally ordered by Vacuum Oil Company for Charles Kearley Esq. (1929)with a special discount of 2 ½% because of the association with Colonel R.G. Bloomfield. Coachwork was originally to be performed by Weymann to become a limousine. Prior to delivery to Weymann it was changed to become an open air Tourer by HJ Mulliner. The car was sold to Albert Hall Mansions in Kensington in 1931. The documents say that in 1944 it was owned by Squadron Leader R. Mottram RAF. Mottram was a WWII Britsh Flying ACE from squadron 92 and 54. Mottram was shot down in 1941. For whatever reason the car was not recorded in RR records until 1944 but his name is in the RR club as a owner. The next owner I have on record is Paddon Brothers to M.Dudley in 1958. Paddon Brothers was the king of reselling Rolls Royce cars in England and eventually worked in part with RR. At there shop brakes were rebuilt and the car inspected. The car was titled here in the United States in 1970. The owner at this time was Alex B. and was in communication with John Fasal who is known for the writing of the book “Twenty”. I have a copy of a handwritten letter to Fasal dated 1974. I am the current owner and there is paperwork and invoices through the 70’s on this car. This is a unique one of a kind RR, as some of them are, with a complete open air design without a top or provisions of one at any time. The door design is such that I have not seen on any Rolls Royce to date. 1976 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow , stored in a garage for 20 years runs needs work, was a Texas car originally, so the body good. wasn't run for years , the brakes are sticky, and would need a brake job. and a tune up. looks like it needs shocks and struts, most of the exhaust looks good but there rust spots. lights, power windows work , and the other electrical systems work. the original paint has crazing, from the texas sun, but still looks good, has a scratch on the left quarter, shown in a pic. moth damage to the carpets. air conditioning , fans work dose not cool. will at least need a recharge, and it is a English car , if there's not oil under it, there's not oil in it, needs a engine seal and a trans seal. shipping , runs enough to get out of the garage , will need towed
