Get into a great looking Carrera convertible for a low price. Only asking 18k, which is well below market, because it will probably need some transmission work at some point. The transmission is a Tiptronic (automatic) and 1st and 2nd will slip under firmer acceleration. 3rd through 5th are solid. It is driveable, you just have to go easy on it as it shifts through 1st and 2nd. I’ve had it into a dealer and they checked the transmission ECU and found only Fault Code 70 for solenoid valve for torque converter clutch. I’m fairly mechanical but transmissions are a weak area for me so I don’t know if a new torque converter clutch will fix it or if there is more involved. The dealer (as do most everyone of them from what I’ve researched) immediately go to the replace the transmission stance because they don’t know how to fix them. Which in their terms is like a 8000 for the transmission and a day’s labor. Ridiculous! With a little bit of research I’ve found remanufactured Transmissions for $2900 that come with a 12,000 mile warranty and reputable indy shops that will do it for about half the labor of the dealer. Please note that as soon as I saw the slipping, I immediately changed my driving so that it didn’t slip when taking off and then drove it very little (basically to dealer and back) mainly because I didn’t want to do further harm. So anyway, I’m at a cross-roads with this car. My Options Purchase the $2900 transmission, drop the engine/tran myself (believe it or not, it is not that difficult on these cars) and put in a new warrantied transmission. I would also go ahead and apply the ~300 IMS bearing repair kit (for piece of mind), and do some other maintenance. This would give me my tip-top ride back which I would feel good knowing that it needed no major repairs for quite some time.Just get the torque converter for (~700) and see if that takes care of it.Along with #2 get a new transmission valve body (~600) and put that on.Take a hit on selling it and let someone else make it right. (what I am trying to do for now)Part it out. From my estimates it’s probably 22,000 or so in parts. It just takes time to do. My gut tells me #3 fixes it…since I only allowed it to slip just a very few times, I don’t think the clutch pack for 1st and 2nd are bad but I really don’t know for sure. Everything else on this car is solid, the wheels are really nice and worth around 3-4k on the used market. The tires only have maybe 4k on them. This car sold for around $80,000 new in 2001. Parts alone are worth more than the asking price. Will also consider partial trades involving motorcycles such as GSXR CBR, or Ninja, Speed Triple, or a 3/4 ton truck. Title is clear and registered in the State of Washington. Make me a reasonable offer and it's yours.
