RARE and most likely the Only 1988 PORSCHE 944 TURBO S for Sale in US 1988 with the M44/52 Motor Showing 37,780 MILES ALL ORIGINAL unmolested looks like it was in a Time Capsule. Needs very little attention to make concourse grade. a little interior work on dash and Dash Knee pads discolored leather needs dying. fog light lens on passenger fog light small crack needs, AC could probably be charged up Has been serviced and I just drove it from Wilmington NC to Richmond Hill GA with no issues. Super fast these cars are faster than the 1988 930 Turbos. Lindsy Racing has Kits to Obtain 300, 400 and 500 HP at the Rear Wheel for these Cars. Presently this car is all original and stock I purchased this car a few weeks ago in hopes to use as a track car for HPDE events and eventually work up to the level I can take my GT3 out for track days. After driving car back to Richmond Hill GA from Wilmington NC, noticing the phenomenal condition and speaking to some enthusiast I was advised and soon realized that this car belongs to a Collector or some one wanting an asset investment and not appropriate for some one like me wanting a track beater as this model is very Rare and escalating rapidly in value especially only 1 owner me being the 2nd owner.. Car shifts, Stops, accelerates great with a very tight and rigid handling. What I see this car needs in Order to be in "Perfect New Condition"Dash needs Leather replaced and Dash Knee pads needs leather to be dyed or replaced as it is a little discolored. Passenger side fog light lens has very small crackAC could probably use a little Freon its cold but not like cold cold or maybe that's how cars where back then Small place in Head Liner near back window could use a little attention maybe just some headliner glue.Cruise Control was not functioning during my road trip maybe a fuse not sure.Stereo comes on but I cant get a radio stationPulls a little to the Left so maybe a front end alignmentSmall crack about 1/2 an inch on Spoiler Passenger side. Only has 1 key these are non chipped so inexpensive This Rare investment opertunity is for sale Locally so I reserve the right to end auction at any time. “Sizzle”, was Motor Trend’s Jeff Karr’s most fitting adjective to describe Porsche’s 944 Turbo S. Car and Driver’s Tony Assenza ran his article with the heading “A bargain at $48,350.” Automobile’s Georg Kacher put it simply: “Move over, 911.” However described, the Turbo S represents the pinnacle of the evolution of the 944 series’ genes, first established with the release of the 944 at Frankfurt in 1983. Universally praised, the S was officially the fastest 4-cylinder powered production car of its era, and possessed everything a true Porsche ought to: superior handling, an uncompromising power plant, and exterior lines whose form followed function. The 944 Turbo S fit that description superbly. Those who had never considered a 944 to be worthy of adorning the Stuttgart badge were silenced by a car which by all accounts not only outperformed the 911 Turbo, but set the benchmark for what a sports car could be. The Porsche 944 Turbo had a North American production run of four years. For most of that time, the 944 Turbo enjoyed a 217 horsepower engine with a KKK K-26 #6 turbocharger. However, in 1988 Porsche unveiled the coveted 944 Turbo S, a retuned version of the Turbo which sought to inject staggering performance into Porsche’s premium 944 model. The S version was claimed by Porsche to be based on the Turbo Cup car, a race version of the 944 Turbo which ran in a racing series of the same name. “I couldn’t help but think,” it was noted in the Rothmans Porsche Turbo Cup “Competitor’s Information” in 1987, “that [the Turbo Cup car] would make a great street car… [with] all the power of the 911 Turbo, the behavior of a 944, the stopping power of the 928S4.” It was therefore unsurprising that in 1988 a special S version of the 944 Turbo, based on Porsche’s successful Turbo Cup spec cars, was unveiled. The 2.5 liter power plant, based on the race proven European Turbo Cup engine, was “hand assembled in Zuffenhausen alongside the 911 Series and the 928 S4 engines”. Although the S shared the same displacement as the standard Turbo, it boasted 247 horsepower thanks mainly to its larger KKK K-26 #8 turbocharger. Indeed, Porsche vastly improved the S’s turbocharger technology. Along with the larger turbocharger unit, which subsequently increased boost pressure to 1.82 bar, output increased thanks to a modified DME system, improving air and fuel mixtures, among other things. Resulting engine power translated into significant performance improvements. Said internal improvements prompted Car and Driver magazine, in 1989, to remind its readers that the 944 Turbo was “by far the most potent 4 cylinder engine in the world”. Standing runs to 60 mph as well as the top speed of the car improved accordingly. On paper the performance variation between the Turbo S and the standard Turbo could not have been more obvious. In improving on the 944 Turbo’s already respectable performance standings, the S relied on its horsepower and on its torque, which now reached 258 ft-lbs. The S’s performance was thereby improved upon, especially in terms of standing acceleration and top speed (0-60, for example, now took 5.5 seconds as opposed to the 6.1 achieved by the standard Turbo). However, the 30 minute factory bench tested engine was merely a portion of the race-inspired design of the 944 Turbo S. The car was undoubtedly similar to its Turbo Cup counterpart in other aspects besides engine output, and although it weighed significantly more than the Cup car, the Turbo S boasted the same race-bred genetic code. The famed suspension package, internally designated the M030 option, allowed the S to cut the road in ways that, by comparison, made the standard 944 Turbo appear sloppy. Although the package was different than the Bilstein setup used on the Cup cars, the S’s Koni “yellow” height adjustable shocks, among other components, were designed to mimic its aggressive handling characteristics, although the setup took driving comfort into consideration whereas the Cup cars, obviously, did not. With a combination of the M030 suspension package, lightweight Club Sport forged alloy wheels, and a larger 928 S4 braking system, which according to Car and Driver stopped the car seventeen feet sooner than the standard Turbo (169 feet compared with 186), Porsche rightfully proclaimed: “Not since the 911 Turbo has Porsche transferred a race car so directly into a road car.” The strengthened transmission (engineers hardened first and second gear to accommodate the power increase) of the Turbo S was complimented with an external oil cooler “for longevity and reliability under very demanding conditions”. The car’s 258 ft-lbs. of torque was handled well by the car’s new high friction clutch, which allowed for strong launches and quick, precise shifts unknown to the standard 944 Turbo. The car also received a limited slip differential (with 40% lockup), similarly necessary for managing the high output of the S. Considering its special “limited production” status, the Turbo S was originally intended for a production run of no more than 1000 units. “The new “S” suffix”, said Car and Driver, “denotes an options package added to a limited edition of a thousand 944 Turbos; 700 will be available [in the United States].” However, desirability, relative affordability, and blinding performance allowed Porsche to initially stretch its production figures to 1653 road going Turbo S units, most of which made their way to the United States. The Turbo S, in its original “1000-unit” form, was most notably distinguished by its burgundy “sport cloth” interior and exclusive silver rose exterior. It’s unique Club Sport wheels, headlight washers, protective side moldings, and rear window wiper were all fitted as standard. These features were coupled with a host of premium options such as a powerful air conditioning system, and other creature comforts like power steering, electric windows, a central locking system, a ten-speaker stereo sound system, and individual folding rear seat backs, all of which Porsche admitted “belie[d] the racing heritage of this very exclusive Porsche.” By the latter half of 1988, however, it became clear that Porsche’s intended limited run would not be sufficient in satisfying the growing demand for the undoubtedly superior Turbo model. It was foremost for this reason that Porsche decided to expand production of 944 Turbo S. Simultaneously, the model was opened up to the full range of Turbo options, which among other things no longer limited the Turbo S to its silver rose paint scheme and burgundy cloth interior. At the same time, Porsche essentially ended production of the standard Turbo; for the rest of the 944 Turbo’s production run (1989 in North America, and 1991 in Europe), the “S” package became standard equipment. For the rest of the 944 Turbo’s production run, the car was known simply as the 944 Turbo; the Turbo’s “S” designation, however, was dropped after the Turbo S was fully integrated in 1989.[*] Although the 944 Turbo S is visually identical to its 217 bhp predecessor, the results of Porsche’s retuning of the already superb 944 Turbo are undeniable. “The 944 Turbo S is merely a rolling testimonial to just how effective the right improvements can be in transforming an already excellent car into something genuinely remarkable.” The performance of the car significantly increased on all fronts; the S was truly a thoroughbred, and a world-class sports car whose performance was undeniable. The genius of its design is in the minute details which ensure dynamic, unparalleled spontaneity during high performance driving, but which do not betray the subtle nature of a truly comfortable sports car. Few super cars can lay claim to such duality, to comfort and styling with virtually no sacrifice to bleeding performance. The 944 Turbo S is one of those uncompromising sports cars.

The production numbers of these 951S models are extremely low, with only 1,915 models entering the U.S. market. Compared to the earlier Turbos, the Turbo S models were boasting a larger turbo, more powerful engine with 250 hp, higher boost and reworked DME. They also came with an external oil cooler. These engines were hand built in Zuffenhausen, and bench tested for 30 minutes, before installation. The suspension, was no less the M-030 Sport suspension, with adjustable Sport Bilstein's, larger front and rear sway bars, and sport suspension bushings. The transaxle, was the race version 5-speed, with the M-220 40% locking differential, with its own oil cooler. Brakes were right off the 928 S-4, ventilated rotors with 4 piston calipers, and hooked up to the most advanced generation Bosch ABS. They also were built with a larger 63 amp/hr battery. This 1989 Turbo S is in pristine condition, with service records from day 1. Emanating its red glare, the original paint is absolutely gorgeous. All the rubber seals and trims are fresh, and there is not a ding or scratch anywhere on the paint. The black interior is gorgeous as well, with the leather seats still retaining their crisp appearance. All the electrical instruments and gadgets work, and the A/C blows cold as it has been recently fully recharged. Performance wise, this Turbo S is one of the best balanced high performance cars of its era. At full throttle, it’s an absolute rush mixed in with a satisfying feel of the whole car working. It sits firm on the road and corners with ease. The braking is solid and the car stops right on cue. There is no question that the 944 Turbo S is one of the best handling Porsches of all time! They're usually cars with high sticker prices that depreciated quickly, like the Mercedes SL. Porsche's 944 is another: everywhere on Craigslist for $5000 with worn paint and not running, spectacular specimens are few and far between. This car is one of the exceptions, with a nice service history, good cosmetics, and only 69,575 original miles. Study this car's lines, and consider its contemporaries: The 300ZX, the RX-7, the Mitsubishi Starion...and notice how relevant the 944 still is today. There aren't any tacky add-ons, the wheels are nicely placed in their wheel wells, and the shape is surprisingly contemporary. As for condition, the burgundy finish has been repainted at some point and looks great, giving Porsche's wedge-shaped sports car an elegant look that disguises its intentions. It's not perfect, of course, but you don't see cars this nice very often and Porsche's build quality stands out with the deep shine and good panel gaps. The taillights are a deep red, indicating proper storage indoors and the rear hatch hasn't de-laminated (a common 944 issue). Even today, folks will look at this car and assume that it costs thousands more than it does. Inside, you'll be amazed at the amount of room up front. The rear seats can handle medium-sized kids for short trips, but put the fronts all the way back and six footers can stretch their legs out straight. There's even helmet room should you decide that autocrossing or doing track days is in your future. An AM/FM/cassette Blaupunkt looks to be original equipment, since Porsche was only offering tape decks in 1987. The original steering wheel has a thick leather covering that matches the interior and shows only modest signs of use but no dryness or cracking. The upholstery is burgundy leather with grippy cloth inserts all in great condition and matching the exterior. The shifter boot shows some wear, but otherwise the interior remains in first class condition and remarkably, the center console is in perfect shape with no extra holes, since many original owners had car phones installed. In back, the hatch area is fully carpeted and doesn't show fading, a remarkable feat given the red carpets. And while you're back there, check out the original tool kit, air compressor, spare tire, and jack set, extras that rarely survived the years, especially in such great shape. Under the hood is nothing but good news. The 944's 2.5 liter all-aluminum four cylinder has timing belts, and it's bad news when they fail. The good news is that this car's belts were done recently, so it's ready to rock. Properly maintained, these engines will run for hundreds of thousands of miles, and this one is a good one with a smooth idle and plenty of torque from the rather large displacement. The engine bay looks like someone cared about maintenance and while it appears complex, you'll find that taking care of a 944 isn't all that difficult. The undercarriage is dry, dry, dry and with just under 70,000 actual miles on the clock this 944 feels years younger thanks to solid engineering and the entire package feels a lot more contemporary than you'd expect. The wheels are proper 15x7 "phone dial" aluminum pieces surrounded by correctly-sized 215/60/15 Pirelli P4000 radials. The 944 is forgiving for beginners and a real treat for seasoned drivers. A slick-shifting transmission, great steering, nimble power, amazing build quality and classic lines adds up to a truly great package. 1986 PORSCHE 944 TURBO I am selling my Turbo, I'm the 2nd owner of the car, first guy had it for 29 years. It has been maintained and protected its entire life. It has lived in a heated garage, never seen winter or snow and seldom seen city driving. It is in VERY nice shape. It is totally factory original, never modified and has never seen a race track. The car has about 78,500 miles on it, of which 90% is county or freeway driving. In the last 10 years it has been driven less than 500 miles per year. This year I changed the cam and balance shaft belts,( a maintenance requirement ), radiator hoses, charged the AC, replaced the the battery and installed a new dash. The leather seats have been covered by a custom made sheep skin covers since day one. Thus the seats are like new and show no ware. If you would like to look at the car I will make time available.

Few cars represent bigger bang for the buck, and this immaculately maintained car still commands respect wherever it goes, never mind the fact that it's also a blast to drive. Maybe some 911 guys look down at the front-engined, water-cooled 944, but one drive will convince anyone that this is a serious driver's car. The Guards Red bodywork is a little "Miami Vice" but still looks fantastic, a testament to the care it has received for the past few decades, including a very high-quality respray about 15 years ago. There's no evidence that it was ever raced or abused, and unlike many of its siblings, it hasn't been chopped and gutted to make a track day special. The Turbo's special front fascia carries large fog lamps and extra cooling ducts, but no scuffs or cracks from steep driveways. Fit and finish are typically Porsche excellent and even the black rubber trim like the rear spoiler and weather stripping is smooth and supple. There's a small scuff on the passenger's side, but you need to look pretty hard to find demerits on this car. Check out the overall condition then look at the price and be prepared to be impressed. The interior is as pure a driving environment as you'll find. Designed by the same guys who win at Lemans, it avoids the quirks of the 911 and delivers all the gear you need to get the most out of the hardware. Supportive leather buckets are grippy but all-day comfortable, and the textured surface seems to be defying the years with its condition. Clear analog gauges put function over style and the 5-speed shifter is the best one this side of a Mazda Miata's joystick. Just about everything was standard (this IS a Porsche, after all) including A/C, power windows and locks, and cruise control. The original 80s vintage stereo has been replaced by a great-sounding Alpine AM/FM/CD head unit and there's a Momo steering wheel, but otherwise it's as the factory built it. The 944 is also practical, with a large hatch area and two rear seats that are useful in a pinch. The 944's turbocharged inline-four cranked out a robust 217 horsepower from just 2.5 liters. Canted over at an angle for a lower center of gravity, it makes big torque at low speeds, yet its light weight means that the car has almost ideal 50/50 weight distribution. While these cars are ridiculously easy to modify, this one remains completely stock, and given Porsche's impressive durability it should continue to run for years and years. The 5-speed manual transmission has its own oil cooler for track use, and the fully independent suspension is race-bred yet supple and everyone knows Porsche's binders are legendary. Expert maintenance means that it's turn-key ready, and the impressively clean undercarriage is more proof that this car has led an easy life as a fair-weather toy. The exhaust system is an aftermarket stainless setup that sounds spectacular, but that's the only notable mechanical upgrade. Wheels are later polished Porsche Cup alloys which wear big 225/40/18 performance radials. Go ahead, give this one a try. At nearly 30 years old, it's still impressive on the road and it should be no surprise that these are still incredibly popular track day toys. This one is so clean and well-maintained, there's still a lot of fun awaiting its new owner. ****Please do not contact me with offers. I don't have any wiggle room on the price. This is a solid 951 and I'll just continue to improve it until it sells.***** This is a 1986 Porsche 944 turbo. It is not modified and has 161,243 miles on it. The AC doesn't work. It has a 5 spd manual transmission with an open diff. Nice clean interior but there are some cracks in the dash. It has a power sunroof and power door locks. The tires are newer with lots of tread. Clean title with no issues. This car appears to have all original paint and no damage repair - just the issue on the rear bumper. I have another rear bumper and end cap and will include them in the sale as well as some other random parts. There is a still a little body work needed. The Porsche 944 turbos have a 4 cylinder 2.5 liter motor. They are rated at 217hp and have a top speed of 150. There were 7513 turbos brought into the US and Canada in 1986 and this is the 6224th one. I don't have any maintenance records - just bought it four months ago from a friend but changed my mind on keeping it. With the exception of the AC all of the systems seem to work ok right now - engine cooling, brakes, transmission etc. However these cars take a lot of maintenance to keep on the road! Oil has just been changed and the coolant system flushed. The transmission fluid was changed as well. I have two keys and the spare tire and owner's manual and jack and tool kit are present. The radio works great and has the HD feature and is Bluetooth ready. I just did a compression test at the request of an interested party. The results were 1-138, 2-146, 3-142, 4-145. Those are pretty good results from my experience.
