To commemorate the continuing success of the Trans Am on its 10th Anniversary, Pontiac released the Y89 “Silver Special Edition,” with production limited to 7,500 examples. Exteriors were finished in metallic silver with dark charcoal and pinstripe accents, enhanced by silver-tinted T-roof panels and an enlarged, five-color “Firebird” hood emblem. These cars received virtually every factory option, and interiors featured distinctive silver leather upholstery, matching deep-pile carpeting and beautifully embroidered tri-color “Firebird” emblems. Just 1,817 examples were fitted with the Pontiac 400-cubic inch V8, rated at 220 hp and mated to a four-speed manual gearbox, while the remaining 5,683 cars received a 185 hp, 403-cubic inch Oldsmobile V8 with a three-speed automatic transmission. As expected, handling and braking characteristics were outstanding thanks to the standard WS6 performance suspension, which included eight-inch wide turbine-style alloy wheels, four-wheel disc brakes and upgraded suspension. 220 hp, 400 cu. in. Pontiac T/A 6.6 V8 engine with Rochester four-barrel carburetor, four-speed manual transmission, independent front suspension with unequal-length A-arms, coil springs and stabilizer bar, live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs and stabilizer bar, and four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes.
