So it's almost irresistible to find one like this 1973 Plymouth 'Cuda that blends original style with enough modern upkeep to be a daily driver. Owing a 'Cuda from this era is a bit like entrance into an exclusive club. By 1973, higher insurance premiums were killing muscle car production numbers, and Chrysler always had lower figures then the rest of The Big Three, so these are rare. Combine this with Mopar's traditionally long option list, and the 'Cuda camaraderie is often about the few ways owner's cars are alike because most are even so much more rare and unique. But one piece that everyone looks for on these classics is Chrysler's famous High Impact colors. The Sublime Green carries a great glow-in-the-dark vibrancy that comes from a professional and modern application of this iconic hue. Still, it's not so bold that you miss out on this E-body's little touches, like the hood scoops, or the red grille accents that look like the glowing eyes of a hungry wolf. In the rear the black accent stripe, rear panel, and spoiler also add an extra touch of that great aggressive feeling. This one has led the life of an enjoyed weekend driver, including the wheels being upgraded to larger 15-inch American Racing Torq Thrust units for better street performance. All of this makes for a coupe with an original pedigree, but not so preserved that there is any apprehension about taking it out on the road. The moment you slip into the high-back bucket seat, it feels like 1973 all over again. Every inch of the black interior feels original and near pristine from the door panels to the carpets to the headliner. You've got the desirable center console with the T-bar gearshift sitting boldly in the middle of the wood veneer. The wood rimmed three-spoke sports steering wheel feels simple, direct, and effective. The same can be said for the original heat/defrost controls and radio, which are prioritized for the driver in these classic E-bodies. In fact, the only piece that doesn't feel factory-correct is a set of newer aftermarket gauges, but these are always welcomed because you're happy to know about what's going on in the engine bay. The optional 340 cubic inch V8 was a vital upgrade because it symbolizes the end of an era. Not long after this coupe left Chrysler's Detroit/Hamtramck factory, the first energy crisis began to close the book on powerful American V8 cars. So, just to make sure this swan song motor is running at its full potential, there are performance enhancements such as an Edelbrock carburetor, Edelbrock Performer Air-Gap intake, Davis Unified Ignition (DUI) electronic ignition, and a Be Cool aluminum radiator. All of this presents extremely well in the engine bay, with the motor and intake painted the correct light blue, and the dark Mopar performance air cleaner and valve covers standing out against the bold green fenders. You better believe this one make a menacing noise with the power adding long-tube headers that connect to a stainless dual exhaust. But more than just an intimidator, this 'Cuda is a fine driver with its three-speed automatic transmission, front disc brakes, and grippy modern Nitto Extreme ZR performance tires. There were less than 10,700 'Cudas built in 1973, and far fewer have survived today as nicely as this one. Buying this speedy Plymouth means you're a member of a rare Mopar club, and considering the exclusivity and performance you receive, the dues seem quite reasonable. The Formula S package gave Plymouth its first V8 pony car status. Today that means you can be just as powerful as a Mustang, but much more distinctive at the car shows since these cars were rare...and best of all, it's even more affordable too. There's nothing else on the road that looks like an early Barracuda, with that massive wrap-around rear window (largest ever of its era), and crisp creases along the tops of the fenders. Clearly derived from the popular Valiant, the Barracuda received its own sheetmetal and was an awesome first shot in pony car wars. This one was restored a few years ago, and it included a respray of the factory red. It looks good simply because the foundation is very solid and straight. Of course, there are no reproduction panels available, so you know it's all factory steel, and the shape of the body leaves few places for any second-rate workmanship to hide. Panel gaps are excellent, which means the doors close with the unique classic Chrysler authority. For those few who know their Formula S coupes, this one does not disappoint, with the right features such as the aggressive full-length triple stripe, blacked out grille, and super shiny upgraded wheels. The Barracuda had a true sporty design, and this black interior shows it off perfectly. The bucket seats have been recovered in the factory's cool intricate pattern, so you can feel it tickle your back as you slip behind the wheel. Your left hand goes on the thin wood-rimmed steering wheel, and your right one rests on the illuminated center-mounted shift lever. As you look across the dashboard, the sea of black is artfully broken up by plenty of stainless and chrome that's on everything from the heat/defrost controls, to the original AM radio...it's truly '60s. Best of all, this Formula S still retains the large factory tach that was mounted to the left of the driver gauge package. The true appeal of the Formula S package was the drivetrain. They received the 273 cubic-inch Commando V8, topped by a 4-barrel carburetor, which advertised 235 horsepower but felt nearly like a rival for the HiPo Mustangs. This high-winding small block is a great choice in the lightweight Barracuda. Chrysler wasn't doing the matching numbers thing in 1965 so its impossible to verify, but this one appears to have all its correct factory-issued components, including the engine and TorqueFlite automatic transmission. The engine bay is very nicely detailed, from the tall, chrome air cleaner, to the trick finned valve covers. Underneath, the Formula S package offered upgraded springs and shocks, delivering a much more European feel. In fact, this is one of the most agile cars of the period, which is only aided by the modern BF Goodrich tires. It's time to be as quick and cool as a Mustang in a coupe that's far more rare and interesting. And, for all you car show fans, this Formula S even comes with the Factory buildsheet and restoration receipts to show off. So, it's irresistible to find one like this recently restored 1972 Plymouth 'Cuda, that blends big block 440 muscle car style with enough modern upkeep to be a daily driver. Owing a 'Cuda from this era is like entrance into an exclusive club. By 1972, higher insurance premiums were killing muscle car production numbers, and Chrysler always had lower figures then the rest of The Big Three. Combine this with Mopar's traditionally long option list, and the 'Cuda camaraderie is often about the few ways owner's cars are alike, because most are so rare and unique. Keen Mopar eyes will have already spotted a few differences on this coupe. For starters, it turns back the clock a few years to take away the federal impact bumpers. And while this was being customized, the front grille and rear panel were switched out for 1970s style pieces to complete the correct look. It all gives this 'Cuda a distinctive minimized chrome appearance that lets you focus on the awesome original shade of Rallye Red paint, and its accessories such as the hockey stripe down the side, hood pins, and of course, the highly desirable bold shaker hood. Open the door, and it's everything you want to see. High-backed black vinyl bucket seats, new door skins, and a center console with the cool original "slapstick" shifter. Then you slip behind the wood rimmed three-spoke wheel and you see some serious upgrades. There's an AM/FM/CD stereo so you can play your modern tunes while cruising. More importantly there is a full custom set of AutoMeter gages that makes sure you have a clear picture of what's going on under the hood. The fender callouts, and hood shaker, did not disquise what lies beneith in this 'Cuda. Power comes from a 440 cubic-inch V8. You may already know these engines were not available from the factory in '72, but this car was just too good not to get a big block. So a '71 motor was completely rebuilt less than 300 miles ago, and installed in this racy red Plymouth. While they were upgrading the motor, it also received performance goodies like an Edelbrock carburetor, Edelbrock intake, and long tube headers. So now you can just imagine how well this one barks at other cars from its dual exhaust system. Delivery of all this power is quite good thanks to the A727 Torqueflite three-speed automatic transmission that's connected to the Sure Grip limited slip differential rear end, with a versatile 3.23 ratio. Control is well in hand with power steering, front disc brakes, and modern BF Goodrich grip, masked by period-correct painted steel wheels and dog dish hubcaps. This 'Cuda is fresh off a restoration from earlier this year, and we even can show you all the receipts to prove it. Rarely do you get this level of quality in a Mopar for such an affordable price. I have relisted the car because I received an offer and the individual couldn't come up with the cash. I took it out for a drive around town last night. I stopped at a local restaurant and had about 20 people come up and drool over the car. I live in a resort/retirement type part of the country and they all had stories about someone that had a car just like it back in the day. It may not be a "muscle" car but it sure turns heads. Everyone loves the color because you just don't see many that have the original color. It was big back in the late 60's and it looks awesome in person. I have a number of extra parts (chrome parts, turn indicators, Barracuda chrome script, knobs for radio, A/C controls, armrests, fasteners etc.) The only item I don't have is the chrome running along the passenger side lower rocker panel. I've seen it on eBay from time to time for about $75.00. The tires are new, new battery, alternator and exhaust (which sounds great!). All the glass is original and has no chips, cracks or scratches. There is no rust anywhere! The carpet is really nice and the seats look like they just came off the showroom floor. Seatbelts all work and buckles are very nice. Radio works but it's only AM. There have been no modifications to the sound system. I have owned it for six years but I just haven't had the time to do any tinkering with it. When I went to start it last night it started right up! Not only is it a real looker it runs great! It stays in my garage and only comes out once or twice a month, when there is no rain in the forecast. The interior is outstanding! The only significant modification to the vehicle is that somebody added power windows (not sure why) at some point. It's a numbers matching car! This has been my dream car and the the color since I was about 12 years old. Unfortunately due to health and financial reasons I must sell it quickly. I had two strokes about 2 months ago and need to pay some medical bills. Everything is straight and works with the exception of the factory air (which just needs to be recharged). I tend to like the fresh air especially on this car because it looks really cool with the windows down. Send me a note and if you have any questions. I do reserve the right to cancel the auction because I have the car on display locally. The car is located in the Southwestern North Carolina, North Georgia area. (I really don't want to sell) but am forced into it! There aren't many of these around and certainly not in as good a shape as this one. I've seen a few around that have had new motors dropped in or completely redone interiors, hood scoops added, and other things modified. If you like an "original" and don't want someone's resto project this is the one. I'm not a car dealer and everything is exactly as I've stated it.

[email protected] 5527 Lakeview Road, Charlotte, NC, 28269, US 1971 Plymouth 'Cuda Documented Restored Investment Grade Black Velvet 'Cuda 383 V8 A833 4 Speed Year: 1971 Type of vehicle title: Clear Primary color: Black Mileage: 92183 Transmission type: 4 Speed Manual Engine: 383 V8 Interior color: Black Vehicle Info It doesn't take long for car guys to put 383 and 1320 together. While Chrysler may have intended Mopar-branded pony cars to be small block-powered curve carvers, their conservative proportions and relative light weight equaled lethal stoplight potential that just couldn't be ignored. And this 383 'Cuda is one of such 'balanced' performer that trades a nose-heavy Hemi for something a bit more rounded. Dressed in some of the most sinister livery Auburn Hills has ever created, this striking Plymouth has a bold look that presents as new thanks to a professional, ground-up restoration. The car is fully documented, retaining a numbers-matching drivetrain and all-original sheetmetal. And, with an excellent combination of provenance and personality, it presents the perfect opportunity to kick off a serious muscle car collection! Speaking of provenance and personality, here's a detailed look at this 'Cuda's glossy fender tag:E65: 383 cubic inch V8D21: Heavy duty 4-speed manual transmissionB: Plymouth BarracudaS: Special23: 2-door hardtopN: 383 cubic inch V8 that utilizes 1 4-barrel carburetor to create 300 horsepower1: 1971 model yearB: Assembled at Dodge Main in Hamtramck, Michigan272782: Production sequence numberTX9: Black Velvet paintH: High trim grade6: Vinyl bucket seatsXW: Black & White interior000: Full door panels125: Assembled on January 25th, 1971E33171: Order numberV1X: Black vinyl topC16: ConsoleC55: Bucket seatsJ45: Hood pinsJ54: Sport HoodM21: Drip rail moldingsM25: Wide sill moldingsM31: Belt & hood moldingsM88: Quarter panel tape stripesN41: Dual exhaustN42: Chrome exhaust tipsR11: Music Master AM radioEN: End of codes2: Assembly line 2 With most classics, a single element usually catches your eye long before anything else. But with this Plymouth, EVERY piece works together to create a virtual symphony of automobilia. With a solid hardtop body that features 100% original sheetmetal, this is the kind of car that would turn heads in primer; and what better way to ensure sore neck muscles than covering it in correct Black Velvet two-stage? That paint coats fit and finish which puts factory-original cars to shame. That fit and finish is augmented by slick white accents which recreate traditional Mopar markings. And to ensure this 'Cuda isn't just another fish in the sea, every one of its facets was buffed to a show-stopping shine! Unlike most dressed and decaled cars, which tend to throw good taste out the window, this awesome E-Body seamlessly balances a serious demeanor with flashy good looks. At the front of its broad shouldered body, a stainless-trimmed, 1971-exclusive grille hangs four halogen headlights above a showroom-fresh bumper and clear, sculpted parking lamps. At the top of that grille, a "'Cuda 383" branded hood props two stainless lanyards and a small "PLYMOUTH" script in front of like-new glass, clean stainless trim and Black Velvet mirrors. At the sides of that hood, satin door handles and stylish fender vents ride above fresh wheel lips, straight rocker trim and a trademark Chrysler pentastar. And at the back of the car, a Satin Black valence hangs a cool "'Cuda by PLYMOUTH" emblem between clear tail lights, a second chrome bumper and correct exhaust tips. Hoist this Mopar's awesome hood and you'll find an original, 383 cubic inch Magnum V8 that hangs a familiar 2468130 casting number between an October (10) 7th (7) of 1970 (70) casting date and matching partial VIN. Almost as popular Plymouth's famed Super Commando, and just as storied, Chrysler's mighty Magnum V8 was designed to be a great combination of thrift and performance. At the top of the stout mill, an American-made carburetor breathes through a correct air cleaner that's covered in a striking combination of fresh Organisol and traditional lettering. Below that carburetor, a spotless orange block wears familiar steel valve covers and professionally restored exhaust manifolds. The big engine's fires are lit by 7mm Standard wires, a reproduction Chrysler voltage regulator and a proven points distributor. And cooling is provided by a beefy Chrysler radiator, which is augmented with authentic squeeze clamps and pliable Chrysler hoses. Take a second to refocus your eyes on the clean engine bay and you'll find details like a correct washer tank, a bright green throttle spring and a familiar red cap battery. And the entire set up, from its fenders to its firewall, is coated in the same TX9 black as the car's glossy exterior panels. As expected, this 'Cuda's fully sorted chassis is every bit as clean and road-ready as its solid body and throaty engine. A rugged A833 4-speed, which is branded with a matching partial VIN, churns power to a tough Chrysler rear end. Included in the restoration was a completely rebuilt suspension that, when combined with correct manual steering, helps the car hook up quick and perform great. Braking, which is surprisingly competent for a 43 year old design, comes courtesy of four beefy drums. Spent gases are escorted rearward by aluminized, true-dual pipes that roar through deep turbo mufflers and fantastic resonators. At the corners, 14-inch steelies spin fresh F70-14 Goodyear Polyglas Custom Wide Treads around stainless center caps. And, aesthetically, the bottom of this super cool Plymouth is cased and ready to roll, with over-restored floors framing a roster of proven components. Swivel this 'Cuda's solid-closing doors and you'll find a correct two-tone interior that's functional, straightforward and very livable. The front bucket and rear bench seats are covered in crack-free vinyl that displays very few signs of wear. Below those seats, stain-free carpet centers thick rubber floor mats on a wood-trimmed console and Hurst pistol grip shifter. At the sides of that carpet, sculpted panels proudly hang the Cuda name above traditional window cranks, integrated door handles and cool chrome locks. In front of those panels, a clean black dash props rebuilt factory gauges above a familiar Chrysler Solid State. Above that dash, a fresh headliner frames a fully functional courtesy lamp. In front of the driver, an attractive, wood-rimmed steering wheel mixes subtle form with major function. And behind the passengers, a fully restored trunk hangs a correct decklid decal above a new mat, new jack and new spare tire. This impressive coupe's sale includes two original broadcast sheets, original marketing materials and an album of restoration photos. Thanks to its solid restoration, exceptional performance and classic good looks, this 'Cuda is poised to please even the most discerning muscle car enthusiast. Fully sorted in every way, you can drive it, show it and take home a few trophies, all for about half the price of a 'ropes and red carpet' Hemi. [email protected] 5527 Lakeview Road, Charlotte, NC, 28269, US 1971 Plymouth 'Cuda Rotisserie Restored 'Cuda Convertible 426 Dual Quad HEMI V8 4 Speed Dana 60 Year: 1971 Type of vehicle title: Clear Primary color: Yellow Mileage: 234 Transmission type: 4 Speed Manual Engine: 426 HEMI V8 Interior color: White Vehicle Info Correct Chrysler muscle cars have fetched big money for years. There's just something about brash, big block MoPars that makes them universally appealing and highly collectable. Thanks to their excellent combination of power, style and exclusivity, offerings like this awesome 'Cuda have some of the fastest sell-through rates of anything in our showroom. In fact, with its storied Hemi, tough A833 4-speed and wicked color combination, this is the kind of metal that'll sell almost as fast as it's posted. If you're looking for a spectacular classic that you can show, enjoy and build a little equity with, it's time to seize the day! Spending most of its life as a clean daily driver, this awesome MoPar was the perfect starting point for a high quality, ground-up restoration. The car's arrow-straight body, which includes solid-closing doors on top of better-than-factory alignment, was stripped to bare metal and massaged into spectacular surfaces. Once those surfaces were completely clean and fully prepped, a flashy coat of Lemon Twist base was detailed with bright white billboards and sealed in glossy clear. And today, this positively vivid Plymouth sits as one super slick road warrior that features a perfect combination of no-nonsense looks and vicious street manners. Thanks to a 1970 redesign, the 'Cuda lost all commonality with its Valiant stablemate and finally traded its lowly economy car lineage for the square-jawed muscle car image we all know and love. At the front of this sinister stoplight brawler, a stainless-trimmed, '71-exclusive grille hangs crystal clear headlights above an elastomeric bumper and familiar, sculpted parking lamps. At the top of that grille, a "hemicuda" branded shaker rides in front of like-new glass, straight stainless trim and Lemon Twist mirrors. At the sides of that shaker, satin door handles, stylish fender vents and a trademark Chrysler pentastar highlight a smooth, professionally finished profile. And at the back of the car, a traditional black valence hangs like-new tail lights and a cool "'cuda by PLYMOUTH" emblem above a bright chrome bumper and correct exhaust tips. Toss the car's light hood and you'll find a 426 cubic inch Hemi V8. As Plymouth's top option for power hungry gearheads, Chrysler's legendary elephant block utilizes cast iron heads, an oversquare bore, a forged steel crank, forged steel rods, forged aluminum pistons and a hydraulic cam to twist stout 10.25 to 1 compression into a stated 425 horsepower and 490 lb./ft. of torque. All that high performance hardware spins in a traditional Hemi Orange block that hangs attractive, Organisol-coated valve covers over correct, low-restriction exhaust manifolds. A perfect mixture of fuel and air is supplied by coated Edelbrock carburetors and a correct aluminum intake. Compression is sparked by MoPar Performance Premium Magnetic Suppression cables, which are snapped onto a correct points distributor. And resultant combustion is cooled by a big radiator that's fitted with pliable hoses and modern screw clamps. Aesthetically, the entire engine bay looks great, from its gray latch and Lemon Twist fenders to its old school fluid reservoir and MoPar battery topper. And functionally, a quick turn of the car's ignition results in a rumbling, high-performance idle, hot or cold. Park this 'Cuda on a lift and you'll find a solid chassis that's no stranger to sunny miles and good times. At the center of the car's floors, a tough A833 4-speed applies power to a rugged Dana 60 rear end that spins a posi-traction differential around friendly 3.54 gears. Below that proven drivetrain, a familiar torsion bar/leaf spring suspension has been completely rebuilt to include factory power steering and manual disc and drum brakes. Exhaust is handled by 2.5-inch, free-flowing tail pipes that jettison cooked dinosaurs through Pypes Street Pro mufflers and square stainless tips. Power flows to the pavement via Chrysler Rallye wheels, which spin authentic looking F60-15 Goodyear Polyglas GTs around stainless trim rings and Graphite center caps. And naturally, the car's clean, body-matched undercarriage is rounded out by fresh stainless fluid lines and a new stainless fuel tank. Pop this Plymouth's clean top and you'll find an elegant interior that plays well off the car's bright paint. The front bucket and rear bench seats are wrapped in virtually new covers. Below those seats, stain-free carpet centers heavy duty, "'cuda" branded floor mats on a sculpted console and Hurst pistol grip shifter. At the sides of that carpet, White door panels hang small "'cuda" emblems above traditional cranks, integrated handles and small chrome locks. In front of those panels, a "Barracuda" branded dash props requisite Chrysler Rallye gauges above a Chrysler Solid State radio. In front of the driver, a wood-rimmed steering wheel spins aluminum spokes around a cool Barracuda horn button. And behind the passengers, a nicely finished trunk centers a correct jack and new space saver spare between a correct mat and new decklid decal. Hemi-powered MoPars are an excellent place to park your cash, and they haven't become any less amazing to own. With incredible paint, an era-correct powertrain and the ability to make the most of summer drives, this 'Cuda is the car that completes your collection. If you're looking for an old school Plymouth to cruise, cherish and enjoy, you're search is officially over! About This Auction Please note that all sales are binding and final. And, unfortunately, a lot of times it's used as a catch-all phrase for builds that have so many modifications they aren't considered stock but don't go far enough to fall in to any specific category. Thankfully, we have cars like this killer Plymouth 'Cuda, which provide a literal definition: take a solid factory cruiser and bump the dial to 11! The beneficiary of a spotless, ground-up restoration, this coupe wraps hot Black and Limelight aesthetics around a custom suspension, five forward gears and 400 Hemi-sourced, rear-wheel horsepower. If you like your MoPars mildly modernized but pure in spirit, step right up and take a look at your new muscle car! BODYWORK/TRIM This E-Body's thorough restoration began when its solid fuselage was meticulously stripped, lightly massaged and carefully coated in correct Limelight 2-stage. Once cured, that urethane was detailed with flamed war paint, purple pin stripes and appropriate "6.1 HEMI" callouts. And, with everything fresh and ready to roll, the car was buffed to a clean and substantial presence. Take one look down the profile of this sweet Plymouth and you'll see tough, slab-sided panels that have been straightened and finessed far past anything that rolled out of the factory. Pull the car in to the sunlight and its glossy glow accurately reproduces Chrysler's planar, straight lines while offering a level of showmanship that can only be achieved with today's advanced paint technology. And, in summary, it all adds up to one super slick, all-American muscle car that benefits from what its restorer likes to call 'reversible restification' terminology that means anything changed could be taken back to stock if a future owner decides he wants to trade his one-of-a-kind show-stopper for a 'Cuda that looks like everyone else's. Unlike many striped and decaled creations, which tend to throw good taste out the window, this awesome MoPar seamlessly balances a cool personality with flashy good looks. At the front of the car, a glossy, "PLYMOUTH" branded grille hangs green ghost flames and a purple pin stripe between bright headlights, a smoothed bumper and a familiar, sculpted valance. At the top of that grille, a pinned Rallye hood rides in front of like-new glass, straight stainless trim and clean, body-matched mirrors. At the sides of that hood, satin door handles, a power antenna and small marker lamps highlight a smooth, professionally finished profile. And at the back of the car, a flamed valance hangs LED taillights between color-keyed louvers, a second smoothed bumper and polished exhaust tips. ENGINE In the name of 'reversible restification', the builder tapped Chrysler's resurrected Hemi to continue this coupe's role as a small block barnburner. Measuring exactly 6.1 liters, the car's nouveaux elephant utilizes a revised block, a forged crank, lighter pistons, strengthened rods, new oil jets, variable cam timing and increased flow heads to turn stout 10.3 to 1 compression into 425 horsepower. The pros at Indy Cylinder Head decided to make the engine their own by boring and stroking the block, installing CNC-ported and polished heads and bathing everything in a familiar coat of Hemi Orange skin. At the top of that skin, eight Hilborn-style velocity stacks mix modern fuel injection with reliable F.A.S.T. programming. At the sides of that skin, coated TTI headers flow in to custom, mandrel-bent pipes. And, at the front of that skin, a Synister Serpentine system spins modern power steering, modern air conditioning and a polished alternator at the sides of a coated Edelbrock water pump, which is hooked to a large aluminum radiator and, by extension, two electric puller fans. Visually, the body-matched bay comes together every bit as well as the outside of the car, with its smooth firewall and bright green fenders providing a perfect frame for the tough Chrysler mill. There's a host of first-class ancillary components, like ARP studs, an Auto Gage fuel pressure gauge, "HEMI" branded coil covers and a Wilwood Hydratech brake booster. And the exceptionally installed motor twists 400 horsepower and 426 lb./ft. of torque directly to the car's beefy rear wheels. DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION Take a peek under this buff E-Body and you'll see the sorted chops that back up the car's handsome looks. The smooth-revving engine is hooked to a Keisler-supplied Tremec TKO600 5-speed, which stacks a proven McLeod clutch in front of a polished driveshaft. Not surprisingly, the car's old-school torsion bars have been completely replaced by a polished AlterKtion front-half, which includes: tubular controls arms, modern coil-over shocks and power rack-and-pinion steering. Out back, Heidts Superide technology provides a polished independent setup, which plays well with the car's polished 9-inch rear end. Naturally, that pavement-ripping suspension is augmented by first-class Wilwood braking, which pinches vented and slotted rotors via 6 and 4-piston calipers. An intimidating engine note comes courtesy of 3-inch exhaust, which, thanks to the techs at Arvada, Colorado's Rocky Mountain Street Rods, follows an X-shaped crossover with beefy Magnaflow mufflers. And power flows through polished and color-keyed American Racing Torq Thrust IIs, which spin 245/45ZR17 Nitto NT555 Extreme ZRs in front of 295/45ZR18 Nitto NT555 Extreme ZRs. As you might expect, this 'Cuda's over-restored floors are sprayed in a nice coat of Limelight Green urethane. And everything, from the car's polished sway bar to its coated fuel tank, is fully sorted and ready to bank some curves! INTERIOR In many heavily modified classics, builders are content leaving the interior just as the factory designed it. And, in the case of most MoPar muscle cars, that's a very good mindset! Like the aforementioned body panels, which subtly blend old and new, this Plymouth's cockpit takes everything great about Chrysler design and builds on it. Note the Barracuda emblem at the center of the custom steering wheel and tilting Flaming River column. Original seats, accompanied by modern shoulder belts, are churched up with clean ostrich inserts. The car's simple door panels, which found factory power windows, are now wrapped in tight leather. At the front of those panels, a padded dash anchors green-lit Auto Meter Pro-Comp Ultra-Lite gauges above crisp Pioneer audio and controls for Classic Auto Air conditioning. At the base of that dash, fresh carpet floats "Barracuda" branded floor mats between a Hurst Pistol Grip shifter and stainless-trimmed foot pedals. And behind the passengers, a matted trunk features plenty of storage space. OUR SALE INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTATIONPhotos of the car taken prior to its restorationA small pile of restoration receiptsA stack of component paperworkAn official dyno sheet A lot of builders set out with the intention of making their vintage project best newer cars in as many ways as possible. That sometimes causes their muse to feel a bit boring or watered down. Thankfully, this Cuda stayed true to form with its 400 horsepower Hemi, tough, row-it-yourself gearbox and absolutely outrageous aesthetics. Virtually spotless and ready to roll, this classic is an impressive build that's sure to please any hardcore MoPar fan who enjoys grabbing gears and sliding sideways. That means all those catchy sayings you've heard about North Carolina country boys being brave, polite and simple are absolutely true. See, gearheads in the Tar Heel state know all it takes to have a good time is something with an engine, something with bullets or somewhere with a little bit of land. And that basic outlook on life is probably why we've built such a great reputation as fun-loving, free-spirited adventurers. The all-original time capsule 'Cuda you see here was custom-ordered by one of North Carolina's most fearless backwoods daredevils, and spent most of its life sitting in his world-class car and motorcycle collection. Not only is the car packed full of rare and unique options, it's also equipped with a top-of-the-line, high performance drivetrain, still covered in original paint and still cradling a 2,010 mile original Hemi V8. We all know time travel, however desirable it may be, as a phenomenon that's only found in fiction. But when you take one look at this untouched Plymouth survivor, the ultimate, lowest mileage reference-grade Hemicuda in existence, you'll begin to question both your sense of time and perception! There's a reason, per auctions results, the 1971 Hemicuda is the most valuable muscle car of all time: they were unique and exclusive cars even when new. And, as with any hand-picked hobby car, you really can't get a feel for this Plymouth's significance until you thoroughly understand its owner. Zachary Taylor Reynolds, born in 1938, lived a life most people only dream about. He was the grandson of the world's biggest tobacco tycoon, the son of a prominent political figure and the heir to seemingly unlimited money, fame and intelligence. By the early 1900s the Reynolds family's penchant for reckless behavior was already a subject of national conversation. But in the midst of the roaring 20s Zach's dad Dick Reynolds, and the uncle Zach was named for, sealed the deal by becoming well-known members of New York's Gotham club scene and transporting Mafia bootleggers on their personal planes. Eventually that risky lifestyle gave way to Zach's uncle dying under mysterious circumstances, and Dick moving back to Winston-Salem to become a pillar of the community and the Mayor of the city. But Dick was a natural wonderer, and although he wanted to settle down and raise his young family, he just couldn't resist a chance to sign up for the Navy and rediscover adventure. Unfortunately his combat service in World War II did not quell his appetite for new acquaintances, and it wasn't long until his wife Elizabeth learned of her pending divorce via a popular radio news show. Now charged with raising four kids by herself, Zach's mother decided he and his younger brother would eschew the prominent private educations of her two eldest sons in favor of public schools and summers on the family's 12,000 acre estate. A few years later, with only one parent in the house and 22 miles of fenced in property at his fingertips, nine year old Zach had already become an avid gun enthusiast; a skill that would later net him a national marksmanship title. And by the time he attended R.J. Reynolds high school, Zach had already established his first motorcycle club and become a race winning rider. Unfortunately the unscathed survival of a few serious wrecks slowly convinced young Zach of his perceived indestructibility, and he began spending most of his nights terrorizing the streets of the town his family essentially founded. The police were none-to-happy about Zach's penchant for blatant street racing and daredevil trickery and, at his mother's urging, made him spend many nights in jail and eventually revoked his license. Not to be outsmarted, and knowing North Carolina doesn't require a license to operate a tractor, Zach simply re-geared one of his family's rigs and happily chugged up and down Winston-Salem's quaint country roads at speeds approaching 60 MPH. Fortunately all those growing pains weren't in vain as Zach ultimately wanted to become an engineering undergrad student. However, his mom insisted he attend Wake Forest University, a nearby college that was devoid of engineering programs, and Zach eventually swapped educational ambition for enlistment in the Navy. After four years honing his mechanical prowess in a Virginia ship yard Zach came home to find that his absentee father, who was displeased with his daredevil lifestyle, had disowned him AND his three brothers. But Zach, already substantially wealthy thanks to several independent family trusts, had no intentions of changing for anyone and began building one of the world's largest private motorcycle and muscle car collections. The Hemicuda you're currently looking at was special ordered from Ed Owens Plymouth in Winston-Salem, North Carolina to be a centerpiece of his amazing collection. Serviced and inspected by Zach's friend Lonnie Maines, it's not only one of the highest optioned 'Cudas ever built, it's also a fully documented, reference-grade survivor that still has many traces of its original owner ingrained in its octane-rich DNA. Zach knew actions speak louder than words, and he also knew there wasn't one single person on this planet he had to impress. That laissez-faire outlook and subsequent freedom from societal norms allowed him to pull off a certain flamboyance and creativity that ONLY someone of his presence and stature can. I mean, do you know anyone else who can don a red jumpsuit, wrap up in a black cape, ham-fist a skull swagger stick and be taken remotely seriously; let alone look straight badass while doing it? No. That's because Zach possessed a perfect balance of danger, charisma and youthful charm that was as intriguing as it was welcoming; and all that character and personality certainly flowed into his cars and bikes. Being the heir to the Reynolds tobacco empire, and having an avid love of Winston cigarettes, Zach predictably ordered his brand spankin' new 'Cuda in Chrysler's FE5 Rallye Red, a V1X black vinyl top and V6X Hemi billboards. When the car arrived at Ed Owens' dealership a few touch ups were performed on its hood and fenders, 70s assembly line quality being what it was, and the black billboards were automatically accented with white Hemi letters and white outlining stripes that continued onto the car's profile. As any decent daredevil knows, you can't be good at cheating death unless you taunt death; so in addition to having his name painted right above both of the car's door handles Zach commenced decorating its fenders, hood and trunk with his typical array of skull decals, ace of spades decals and American flag decals. For the first 30 years of its life, this is exactly how the car would remain. It was only after a high caliber Mopar collector Steven Juliano bought it from a North Carolina museum that it was returned to 100% factory luster. Steven determined the only way to safely separate the vintage decals from the vintage paint was to carefully scrape them with his finger nails. The painted "ZACH" letters on the doors were whittled to a mere outline using a mild buffing compound. And the entire car was treated to a through polish and shine. Today, 16 years after that cosmetic freshening, this 'Cuda sits as one fantastically straight head turner which possesses new car solidity and looks as if it could have rolled out of Dodge Main yesterday. And lest you think Zach's spirit isn't still with the car, one careful look at its doors reveals the faint outline of his official brandings! Of course, even without Zach's unique aesthetic tweaks, this sinister stoplight brawler is still very easy on the eyes and STILL some of the meanest looking muscle to ever grace American roads. At the front of the car, an optional Rallye Red multiport grille hangs four 1971-exclusive halogen headlights above a showroom fresh chrome bumper, original chrome road lamps, flush-fitting parking lights and optional wing spoilers. At the top of the car, a fresh air hood props stainless hood pins, a small chrome "PLYMOUTH" script and a "hemicuda" branded shaker in front of original tinted glass that's cleared by turtleback wipers and framed by original stainless trim. At the sides of the car, original Hemi Fender's hang small turn signal indicators and 1971-exclusive fender gills in front of optional body-matched racing mirrors, satin-finished door handles, optional door edge guards and dent-free rocker mouldings. And at the back of the car, a traditional flat black valence centers a cool silver "'cuda by PLYMOUTH" emblem and 1971-exclusive tail lights between original rear window louvers, an optional decklid wing, a second showroom fresh chrome bumper and correct stainless exhaust tips. Despite his loved ones' constant attempts to dampen his desire for fast cars with storms of personal threats, Zach always drove the most impressive metal in town. There was the infamous Catalina 421 Super Duty he purchased for "family transportation". There was the 140 MPH NASCAR-built Cobra he bought to outrun a few specific loudmouths. There was his custom-built, rocket powered Ford Galaxie that made a 200 MPH pass down Interstate 40 and became unofficially known as The Tobacco King. Hell he even had five planes, including one custom-built Pitts, which earned him both a national aerobatics title and the nickname Cigarette City Flash! The point is: Zach ALWAYS had a need for speed and an appetite for the very best. And given how well he and his friends maintained his lust-worthy collection, the engine bay of this top-dog 'Cuda is exactly how you'd expect it to be. There's an all-original, low-mileage Hemi which wears a correct 2468330-2 casting number above a matching 295999 partial VIN. There's a gracious amount of original Hemi Orange overspray that creeps onto the engine's closest ancillary components. And there's original Rallye Red paint covering a firewall and inner fenders that look so fresh they've likely never seen a mechanic's cover. Fuel and air are supplied by two 4-barrel Carter AFB carburetors which are bolted to a high performance intake manifold. Compression is sparked by high quality Chrysler Electronic Suppression wires which are snapped onto an original dual point distributor. Spent gases are expelled through original low restriction exhaust manifolds which seal tight below an obviously vintage set of Organisol coated valve covers. And resultant combustion is cooled by a 26 inch heavy duty radiator that comes complete with original hoses, original squeeze clamps and an original fan shroud. Visually, this reference grade engine compartment is clean and understated... Well, as understated as an all-original, matching numbers HEMI can be. The engine cranks immediately and runs just as well today as when it rolled into Ed Owens showroom. And there are tons of little details like specific fuel lines, original carburetor hardware, original brake booster hardware, original coil wiring, mild weave hoses and original factory-fill fluids that can't even be duplicated by today's nicest NOS and concours cars. Ace stunt pilot or not, I don't think Zach ever got the wheels of this solid Plymouth off the ground. But if you decide to do just that, hopefully via a conventional lift instead of an actual flight plan, you'll find a clean original undercarriage that appears so untouched it could have been teleported straight from 1971. The high powered big block spins an original A727 TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic transmission that's branded with a correct 3515849 Barracuda code and a matching 295999 partial VIN. And that heavy duty gear slinger churns torque through an optional Dana 60 rear end that's still equipped with a tough Sure Grip differential, killer 4.10 gears and an original factory paper strap that's branded with a build sheet matching 026 part number. At the front of the car an original torsion bar suspension, which is complete with a thick sway bar, specially tuned shocks and original control arms that still display a thin layer of factory Cosmoline, helps increase both drivability and track times. At the back of the car, the aforementioned Dana pumpkin utilizes original leaf springs and a second pair of specially tuned shocks to ensure tight turns and drama free launches. Stops come courtesy of an optional power brake system that employs optional front discs and traditional rear drums. Turns feels firm and responsive thanks to a factory optioned power steering. Spent gases are whisked away by an original true dual exhaust system which features an H-pipe crossover, rear-mounted resonators and Chrysler branded turbo mufflers. And all this first rate hardware proudly stands on original 15 inch Rallye wheels which wrap original F60-15 Goodyear Polyglas GTs around pristine center caps and spotless trim rings. Aesthetically, the bottom of this Super Track Pack 'Cuda is just as reference-grade as its engine bay. And all its original details, including optional undercoated floors, hasty paint drips, standard chalk marks, steel chassis hardware and an old school stainless gas tank are precisely where the factory left them. Ever hear the old southern saying "I told you this story to tell you another story"? Well, I'm going to tell you a short story to tell you an even shorter story. While recovering from a motorcycle accident that landed him in the hospital, Zach ordered a small Ham radio to stave off boredom. That little bit of exposure to the hobby excited him so much he built an entire two-room system in his house that could broadcast worldwide. Among other people, Zack often talked to the Shah of Iran and Arizona native Barry Goldwater; and his signal became so powerful the FCC would regularly visit his house to complain about his interference with local radio stations. Now, I told you that story to highlight a very rare option in Zach's 'Cuda. Because he was such an audiophile, he was one of the few guys to actually check the order form for a premium factory stereo that came complete with a microphone jack and a recorder. Of course, when it comes to most Hemicudas, there are two things to consider: 1) They were bought mainly for performance, and 2) The addition of Chrysler's almost $900 Hemi usually didn't leave much room for frivolous extra-cost luxuries. But I guess one of the many perks of being a millionaire heir to the world's largest tobacco company is checking the box for pretty much anything you want, anytime. Inside the car a rare split bench front, full bench rear seat combination displays virtually no signs of wear at all. Opposite those seats, a fresh black dash hangs and a fully-functional Rallye instrument cluster above a standard Music Master AM/FM radio, an optional locking glove box and a lit ashtray that still conceals butts from Zach's beloved Winston cigarettes. On the doors, sculpted panels proudly hang bold "'Cuda" emblems above optional power window switches, integrated door handles and chrome lock latches. The driver interfaces with the road through an optional three-spoke Rim Blow steering wheel and a chrome column shifter. And the passengers stow their cargo in a virtually untouched trunk that props an original mat and an original Space Saver spare tire below optional rear window speakers, an optional rear window defroster, and factory wing springs. Just in case this world class Tar Heel survivor's amazing story isn't enough to impress you, it also comes with extensive documentation and the provenance of being part of high profile Mopar collector Steven Juliano's ultimate collection. According to the car's Mopar Action spread Steven, who exclusively buys Mopars "the hardest of the hardcore collectors can only dream about", wanted to find the ultimate Hemicuda and subsequently put the word out in his inner circle of Mopar aficionados. An associate of well-known restorer Roger Gibson mentioned Zach's 2,000 mile survivor and, after a few leads, Steven finally got a number and made the call. The owner promptly told Steven the car wasn't for sale but did eventually agree to let him look at it. So Steven grabbed fellow Mopar aficionado Tony D'Agostino, landed in the piedmont of North Carolina and, after two hours of crawling all over this 'Cuda, realized he had actually found the kind of survivor that's usually reserved for car guy fantasies. Upon asking Tony his thoughts, he received the response "If you don't buy this car right now, I will. And I'll never need to own another Mopar as long as I live." And that's all Steven needed to hear to blurt the word "DEAL!" before the owner even finished naming his price. Here's an itemized list of this one-of-a-kind Hemicuda's documentation:The original broadcast sheet outlined aboveThe car's original factory punch cardThe car's original two page window stickerEd Owens original bill of sale for the carA small stack of Ed Owens original warranty and dealership paperwork pertaining to the carA copy of Zach's original title for the carThe car's original owner's manualProof of the car's insurance that dates back to 1971One of the car's original vehicle registration cards that's dated to 1973A small, hand-written maintenance logA 1985 North Carolina state inspection that shows the car had only racked up 1,928 miles at that timeAn extensive write up on Zach Reynolds and his passion for all things mechanicalA copy of the car's cover spread in the June 2005 edition of Mopar Action. Throughout his life "Dr. Zach" was in the company of celebrities, rock stars and what most considered the upper crust of society. But no matter who visited him, or who he traveled to see, he always called Winston-Salem his home and Winston-Salem residents his closest friends. Unfortunately time waits for no one and Zach, now pushing his 40s, had suffered a series of accidents and was beginning to have premonitions of dying in a plane crash. At the behest of his wife, he decided to quit flying altogether and settled into being a mentor and friend for community kids who had long admired his daredevil spirit. One of those kids, a local 18 year old, had just gotten his pilot's license and was eager to take Zach up to show him a few moves. Given his premonitions Zach was secretly reluctant, but his kind nature would never allow him say no to a kid. On that fateful evening in 1979, the tenth anniversary of Zach's national aerobatics championship, he would take off from his namesake uncle's regional airport and perish in a terrible plane crash. His friends and fans in Winston-Salem remember him as someone that, despite his privileged status, was always magnetic, warm, welcoming and exceedingly generous. And one friend described his perpetual youth by saying: "When we were 10, Zach was 14. When we were 19, Zach was still 14". As an avid gearhead, it seems only fitting that Zach Reynolds would pass his gift of perpetual youth to his amazing cars. Flashy, unique, scary and possessing the best of everything this car, the ultimate reference-grade 1971 Hemicuda in existence, is a refreshing reminder that extraordinary things ARE still possible and extraordinary things DO still exist. If you're looking for the absolute ultimate muscle car that's guaranteed to please the most discerning collector and serve as the perfect centerpiece to any collection, here's your ace in the hole! It's part of why they were some of the first heavy hitters in the muscle car marketplace and remain strong sellers today. And, while the term "matching numbers" certainly carries a lot of weight, it's not the only mark of a desirable E-body. Take a look at this well restored Plymouth 'Cuda convertible. With a 472 cubic inch Hemi V8, this car certainly has the exclusivity factor. That uniqueness is supported by a performance-oriented options list and sinister factory looks that are some of the best in the hobby. And, if you're looking for a spectacular classic that you can show, enjoy and build a little equity with, those looks are the perfect way to brighten your summer! BODYWORK/TRIM Spending most of its life as a clean daily driver, this awesome MoPar was the perfect starting point for a high quality, rotisserie restoration. The car's arrow-straight body, which includes solid-closing doors on top of better-than-factory alignment, was stripped to bare metal, fitted with new quarters and massaged into spectacular surfaces. Once those surfaces were completely clean and fully prepped, a flashy coat of Lemon Twist base was detailed with Satin Black billboards and sealed in glossy clear. And today, this positively vivid Plymouth sits as one super slick road warrior that features a perfect combination of no-nonsense looks and vicious street manners. Thanks to a 1970 redesign, the 'Cuda lost all commonality with its Valiant stablemate and finally traded its lowly economy car lineage for the hard-edge muscle car image we all know and love. At the front of this sinister stoplight brawler, a stainless-trimmed, '71-exclusive grille hangs crystal clear headlights above a body-matched bumper and familiar, sculpted parking lamps. At the top of that grille, a glossy, "hemicuda" branded shaker rides between stainless hood pins, a small "PLYMOUTH" header emblem and like-new glass that's framed in mirrored trim. At the sides of that shaker, satin door handles, stylish fender vents and dent-free wheel lips highlight a smooth, professionally finished profile. And at the back of the car, a black, stainless-trimmed valance hangs like-new taillights and a cool "'Cuda by PLYMOUTH" emblem between a prominent spoiler, a second body-matched bumper and correct, square exhaust tips. ENGINE Toss the car's light hood and you'll find a 472 cubic inch Hemi V8. Straight from the factory, Chrysler's legendary elephant block utilized cast iron heads, an oversquare bore, a forged steel crank, forged steel rods, forged aluminum pistons and a hydraulic cam to twist stout 10.25 to 1 compression into a stated 425 horsepower; and that was before this monster mill received its new displacement. That oversized volume lives in a traditional Hemi Orange block, which hangs attractive, Organisol-coated valve covers over correct, low-restriction exhaust manifolds. A perfect mixture of fuel and air is supplied by coated Edelbrock carburetors and a correct aluminum intake. Compression is sparked by loomed plug wires, which are snapped onto a correct points distributor. And resultant combustion is cooled by a big radiator that's fitted with pliable hoses and old school squeeze clamps. Aesthetically, the entire engine bay looks great, from its gray latch and Lemon Twist fenders to its old school fluid reservoir and reproduction MoPar red cap battery. And functionally, a quick turn of the car's ignition results in a rumbling, high-performance idle, hot or cold. DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION Park this 'Cuda on a lift and you'll find a solid chassis that's no stranger to sunny miles and good times. At the center of the car's floors, a tough A833 4-speed applies power to a rugged Dana 60 rear end that spins a posi-traction differential around friendly, 3.54 gears. Below that proven drivetrain, a familiar torsion bar/leaf spring suspension has been completely rebuilt to include factory power steering, power front disc and rear drum brakes and KYB Gas-a-Just shocks. Exhaust is handled by 2.5-inch, free-flowing pipes that jettison cooked dinosaurs through an H-shaped crossover, clean turbo mufflers and factory-spec resonators. Power meets the pavement via traditional Chrysler Rallye wheels, which spin 245/60R14 BF Goodrich Radial T/As in front of 255/60R15 BF Goodrich Radial T/As. And naturally, the car's clean, body-matched floors are rounded out by fresh stainless fluid lines and a fresh stainless fuel tank. INTERIOR Under this Plymouth's black top you'll find an elegant interior that plays well off the car's bright paint. The front bucket and rear bench seats are wrapped in virtually new covers. Below those seats, fade-free carpet centers vivid, "'Cuda" branded floor mats on a sculpted console and Hurst pistol grip shifter. At the sides of that carpet, black door panels hang tasteful "'Cuda" emblems above integrated handles, chrome power window switches and small lock tabs. In front of those panels, a "Barracuda" branded dash props requisite Chrysler Rallye gauges above an AM/FM radio. A wood-rimmed steering wheel laps a fixed column and behind the passengers is a nicely finished trunk that centers a correct space saver and tire inflator kit between a new jack, a correct mat and a new decklid decal. OUR SALE INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTATIONEight restoration photos Few phrases grab the attention of enthusiasts quite like "Built Hemi 'Cuda", and that's exactly what you're hearing with this impressive E-Body. The factory-spec crowd can eat their hearts out while they watch you pull away in an upgraded version of their 'perfect muscle car'. [email protected] 5527 Lakeview Road, Charlotte, NC, 28269, US 1971 Plymouth 'Cuda Rotisserie Restored Hemicuda Arruzza 426 HEMI Dual Quad 536 HP 5 Speed Dana 60 Year: 1971 Type of vehicle title: Clear Primary color: Blue Mileage: 3462 Transmission type: 5 Speed Manual Engine: 426 HEMI V8 Interior color: White Vehicle info We've sold, and actually built, a ton of Hemi 'Cuda tribute cars. Not real Hemi 'Cudas, but exact replicas for folks who can't exactly afford the six-figure price tagof an authentic, numbers-matching piece. That said; I have to say this '71 'Cuda might be the coolest Hemi 'Cuda resto-mod we've ever had. Not stock, and never intended to be confused for a real Hemi 'Cuda like some uninspired imitators, this MoPar was built to drive and drive HARD! This is where I would ordinarily give you some fender tag information, but because this car is so heavily modified from stock (plus the tag isn't there anymore), what's the point? Instead let's talk about what this Plymouth is today. It's powered by a fire-breathing, 536 horsepower Hemi - assembled by John Arruzza, equipped with a 5-speed Tremec transmission and fitted with giant, vented Baer brakes. If you're a true performance fan, that's surely more interesting than a fender tag with codes for a 318, tinted glass, and an AM radio, right? This car showed up a few years ago as a fully finished piece with just a handful of miles that was already 100% ready to rock. But instead of simply taking photos and putting it out on the floor, we decided this brute deserved to go to the next level and sent it into the RKM Performance Center for a few choice upgrades. What came out was this B5 Blue killer. Today, that 2-stage paint still features an incredible shine and, as you can see from looking at our high resolution photos, its founding panels are still incredibly straight. On top of those panels, HEMI billboards, supplied by Phoenix Graphix, are clean and blemish-free. And all the Argent Silver pieces on the car have been refinished in the correct shade and texture. Yes indeed: this is one sharp-looking 'Cuda! The devil is certainly in the details, and this coupe doesn't disappoint. The car's white vinyl top is tight and looks excellent. There's a lot of fresh chrome everywhere. The fender gills are new, and someone spent a lot of time polishing stainless. Naturally, that stainless frames glass that's in excellent condition, with pliable weather stripping and felts. And lenses and other plastic items look factory-fresh. Okay, enough about cosmetics; let's talk about performance and horsepower! The engine is a 426 cubic inch Hemi that was built by John Arruzza. If you don't know John's work, you just don't know Hemis. He's built over 600 Hemi engines in his career, and still builds each one himself instead of farming things out or letting some underling do his work. He's even built Hemis for Richard Petty! The Arruzza mill in this car produces a claimed 536 horsepower at 6,200 RPM and 471 lb./ft. of torque at 4,500 RPM. As you know, that's considerably stronger than any stock Hemi ever was. The big block is topped by two 4-barrels and an authentic shaker hood. Exhaust is handled by a set of gigantic long-tube headers dumping into a 3-inch, true-dual exhaust which makes it sound like an angry God is chasing you. Up front, a March serpentine system drives a large pulley fan and a polished PowerMaster alternator. An MSD ignition system lights the fires, including thick Taylor wires and a Blaster coil mounted in the stock location. For the right look, the car's original 26-inch radiator was retained. A set of polished Hemi valve covers provide some nice dress-up, and the entire thing is painted a correct shade of vintage Hemi Orange. Translating all that power into motion is a Keisler/Tremec 5-speed manual transmission. We've installed a lot of these and they're an incredible upgrade for classics, combining eyeball-flattening acceleration with relaxed cruising. And that's despite the relatively tall 3.73 gears in this 'Cuda's Strange Dana 60 rear end. That Tremec accompanies a requisite hydraulic clutch that provides improved feel and reliability. The car's suspension is pretty much stock, with upgrades like adjustable QA1 shocks, heavy duty springs and a fat sway bar. Spent gases flow from an H-shaped crossover to throaty Dynomax mufflers and traditional stainless tips. And, of course, there's the aforementioned Baer brakes, which feature 13-inch rotors up front, 12-inch rotors out back and high quality PBR calipers. If you're sharp, you've also noticed those trick billet wheels that were designed to look a lot like the original Rallyes. Measuring 17-inches in diameter these rims are considerably lighter than originals, and they wear sizable 255/45ZR17 Sumitomo HTRZs and 275/50/17 Falken Ziexs. Climb inside this Plymouth and you'll discover more of the RKM Performance Center's outstanding work. The seats are fresh buckets with clean covers sat inside a like-new driving environment. The dashboard is stuffed with original-style Rallye gauges with trick white faces that add a unique twist to the original look. The Tremec is stirred by an original pistol-grip shifter, now topped with a correct 5-speed shift pattern. You've probably noticed that the car's ubiquitous R11 Music Master AM radio has been replaced by a high-tech Alpine head unit that feeds scattered speakers for a vastly improved listening experience. Floor mats with blue 'Cuda logos embroidered on their faces keep fresh carpet nice and clean. And the trunk features a fresh mat, a matching alloy wheel and a third Falken tire. So, if real Hemi 'Cudas are just out of your price range and a clone is, well, just too ordinary, take a good, long look at this awesome MoPar. This car takes the rule book and throws it out the window, instead focusing on building a classic that's a party to drive and incredibly potent on the street. With a few smart upgrades, like the Tremec 5-speed and a high-end stereo system, it's a very capable cruiser that can devour vast stretches of interstate. With those big brakes, killer shocks, and modern rolling stock, it can go around corners with the best of them. And best of all, it's wrapped in a very stock-appearing package that'll fool all but the sharpest of viewers. If that sounds like your kind of fun, this is your kind of car! [email protected] 5527 Lakeview Road, Charlotte, NC, 28269, US 1967 Plymouth Barracuda Formula S Magazine Featured 1 of 9 Barracuda Formula S 383 4 Speed Convertible Year: 1967 Type of vehicle title: Clear Primary color: Yellow Mileage: 31622 Transmission type: 4 Speed Manual Engine: 383 Magnum Interior color: Black Vehicle info In 1971, Plymouth built nine examples of the most valuable muscle-car on the planet: the Hemicuda Convertible. And, as many of you know, these incredible rare cars have sold for upwards of three million dollars over the past five years. And rightly so: they were Chrysler's parting shot at the muscle car era. Massively over-powered and stuffed with ultra-cool options like Shaker hoods, billboard stripes and 8-track players, these were cars which, if you could afford the gas back in the early 70s, made just about any muscle-car fan weak in the knees. To the best of my knowledge, all nine Hemicuda convertibles have been accounted for, with a fake or two thrown in for good measure. Most have been restored and have traded hands for insane amounts of money. Now what if I told you about a Barracuda convertible that is just as rare as a 1971 Hemicuda convertible? In fact, they made exactly nine. And, in fact, it had the hottest power-train combination available for its model year? And, what if I bet you a case of Sam Adams that you've probably never heard of one, let alone seen one up close? Would you take me up on that bet? If I can get enough of you to take me up on it without reading, I believe I am going to have a very large beer truck pulling up to our Charlotte showroom next week! So sit back and learn about the RAREST Barracuda Convertible ever built and, most likely, one of the only two or three left in existence. In fact, if any of you out there know where any of the other eight cars are, let us know. Our story begins on June 10, 1967. On that day, Barton W. Quarm of Kirtland, Ohio took delivery of a 1967 Plymouth Barracuda Convertible from Walton Chrysler-Plymouth of Painesville, Ohio. We're not sure if Barton ordered this car brand new or if Walton Chrysler-Plymouth just happened to take delivery of the car for showroom stock and Barton saw it while shopping for a new car and purchased it. What we DO know is that Barton was the original owner of the car, as evidenced by the ORIGINAL factory warranty booklet issued by the dealer on June 10, 1967. Along with the warranty booklet, we also have the original Chrysler Sound System manual, an original Chrysler Crew boat accessory booklet, an original California clean air package insert and the original Chrysler Airtemp manual. This isn't stuff we picked up off of Ebay; these items are original to the car. We also have the original Chrysler Certicard that was issued to Barton by Chrysler. I've seen quite a few Certicards and this one is in mint condition. It doesn't appear that Barton ever put the Certicard in the engine compartment and, instead, placed it in the original plastic manual bag for safekeeping. Now I'm going to skip forward a bit. We found this car back in 2007 supposedly sporting 31,223 actual, original miles. A backyard restoration had been started some years before and he had quite a ways to go in the process. Apparently, he had run out of both time and money, and fortunately for us, a deal was struck. When we located the car, we had no idea how rare it was, but we quickly found out. I managed to track down Barton Quarm's son, who recounted that he remembered the car quite clearly. He filled us in on some of the car's history, which verified the car's low mileage status. Apparently, in 1971 the Barracuda needed a brake job. Barton put the car up on jack stands in his barn, with the intent of doing just that, but simply never got around to it. The car sat on jack stands until 1974 when Barton told his son he couldn't afford gas for the car and, since it was a lousy winter driver, was content to let it sit. So the car sat until September 12, 1983, at which time Barton signed the title over as a gift to a relative, James W. Ablanalp of Willoughby, Ohio, with exactly 31,223 miles on the odometer. We have a copy of that title which documents the transaction. From here, the history of the car gets a little fuzzy. Local legend is that the car sat outside a small body shop for a few years and changed hands a couple of more times. And when we found the car, it had been very poorly repainted by a local Chrysler/Plymouth dealer that's no longer in business. After purchasing the car and determining just how rare it was, we knew that we had to restore it back to its original glory. That started with a thorough review of original build specs. Thankfully, the pristine original Chrysler Corporation Broadcast Sheet had been pulled out at some point in its past, so we had a complete roadmap of how this Barracuda was originally constructed. As well, we wrote to Chrysler Historical and received a copy of the original IBM punch card for the car. Since we had the original Broadcast Sheet, the punch card wasn't so crucial, but it was nice to have independent verification direct from Chrysler. Lastly, we reviewed a Galen Govier report on the car. Because it's a 1967, Galen has an accurate count on how many of a particular make/model of a car were built and, as he pointed out in his report, only NINE 383 Barracuda Convertibles were built in 1967, and our car was number six. We don't know how many were four speeds and how many were automatics, but if history is any judge, we'd be willing to bet that perhaps only four or five of the cars were of the four speed variety. Here's a breakdown of the original fender tag, as supplied by Galen: BH Car Line: Plymouth Barracuda27 Body Type: Convertible62 Engine: 383 1-4bbl 280hp 8 cylinder Dual Exhaust3 Transmissions: A833 4-Speed Manual Inland Shifter28 Tires: D70 x 14" Red Streak5 Quantity: 5 Includes Spare425 Scheduled Production Date: Tuesday April 25, 196702219 Shipping Order Number Plymouth A4 Ratio: 3.23:1 8.75" AxleX8 Axle: Sure GripTH Trim Grade: HighR6 Front Seat: Vinyl BucketsMX Interior: BlackPR Roof Paint: YellowNR Body Paint: YellowT1 Paint Style: Mono-toneUB Upper Door Frame Color: BlackB No Buffed Paints Stripes: noneD9 Front Disc BrakesF7 Formula S Package M2 Designated Line 2 Build After 118 SPDR1 Music Master AM RadioT4 Performance GaugeX2 Tinted Windshields OnlyY1 Convertible Top: BlackA6 ConsoleB4 Bucket Seats So there you have it: a 1967 Plymouth Barracuda Formula S Convertible, with bucket seats, console, disc brakes and powered by a 383 and 4-speed. No, it's not a 1971 Hemicuda, but as '67 cars, this is the ultimate A-body. When we made the decision to restore this car, we had mixed emotions. First, we knew it was going to be a difficult job. 1967 A-body cars are simply hard to restore. There are very few reproduction parts available and good original parts are expensive. Thankfully, the original drive-train was present and the incredibly rare and impossible to find 1967 A-body big block K-member was present. Second, we knew this would be a money loser for us. Like most businesses, there is a financial common sense standpoint that must be present in any project. And this one made little sense. To properly restore this Barracuda to concours standards would mean a final price tag with parts and labor right around the $150K mark. Of course, we knew the car wouldn't be worth this when we were done, but, in the end, we decided that this was a Mopar that simply needed to be restored. It was simply too rare and too cool to let it languish for another 36 years. After spending a good 18 months scouring swap meets, the Mopar Nationals, and Carlisle for all the original parts we would need, the restoration process began. The entire car was disassembled to a bare shell with all parts inventoried. All of the original chrome, including the bumpers, emblems, fish symbols, and interior chrome parts were sent to Custom Chrome Plating in Grafton, Ohio for triple chrome plating. If you've ever seen Custom Chrome's work, you know how good it is. National show-winning good! Likewise, we gave them all of the stainless steel trim for expert polishing. We sent off the original and impossible to find two-piece grille to King of Trim in California for re-anodizing and restoration. After the body was taken down to a bare shell, we knew we would need new inner quarter panels and a new trunk floor. After about six months of searching, we located original pieces. While we were searching for parts, the body and all panels were dipped and e-coated. This process assures that you are dealing with 100% solid metal, with nothing hidden anywhere. After the replacement panels were expertly installed, with all factory welds replicated, the Barracuda's body was primed and block sanded to straight perfection. While this work was being done, we scoured the swap meets for a complete set of correct 1967 14 Sport wheel covers. As some of you may know, these wheel covers are difficult to find in good condition. In most cases, they are cracked and un-restorable. Eventually, we were able to create a set of five expertly restored wheel covers after purchasing three complete sets. At the same time, restored parts started to trickle back in. The original Barracuda emblems, front and rear bumpers, Formula S emblems, fish insignias, and interior chrome parts came back from the chrome shop, along with all of the newly polished stainless steel. We located NOS rear tail lights for the car, and the restored grilles came back looking like a million bucks. The original engine and transmission were torn down for complete rebuilds. The original 280 horsepower 383 engine was fully rebuilt and sports its original air cleaner, exhaust manifolds, intake, carburetor and distributor. Because the Barracuda only had 31,000 original miles, an overbore was not necessary. The original A833 4-speed manual transmission was also rebuilt and restored to factory specs and appearance. With the body and drivetrain complete and restored parts showing up on a daily basis, it was time to turn our attention to applying a world class paint job. Using our paint of choice, the guys at our restoration shop laid down an absolutely flawless application of factory Yellow PPG base coat/clear (DBC/2002). With countless hours spent sanding, the end result is nothing short of spectacular. 100% metal, without an ounce of filler to be found in the completed body, this Barracuda has a perfectly straight metal body with blinding paint. Underneath, we replicated the factory primer process, with blown overspray. Truth be told, we were a little neater about it than Mopar was in 1967. After the body and paint were complete, final assembly began. All new weather-stripping, body bumpers, grommets and seals were used throughout this Barracuda. The convertible top frame and hardware, with every single nut and bolt restored and properly repainted was reinstalled. New date coded glass was installed, both sides and windshield. Underneath, the original 8 axle, fully rebuilt, was put in place, along with new reproduction leaf springs. A new fuel tank was installed, along with fresh stainless steel fuel and brake lines. The completely restored front suspension was reinstalled as well. A correct reproduction dual exhaust system that's complete with OEM -style mufflers and correct chrome tips finished off the show quality undercarriage. The restored drivetrain was carefully dropped into the Barracuda and connected to the brand new wiring harnesses. The rebuilt steering box was installed. The restored radiator was reinstalled, along with a restored wiper motor. The 10" front disc braking system and rear 10" drum braking system were rebuilt to factory specs and capped off by the restored 14" wheels, restored wheel covers and reproduction 14" red streak tires. Now it was time for all of the exterior trim, including the restored grilles, the tail light bezels, the emblems, stainless steel moldings, the re-chromed original door handles, and original bumpers. After these items were installed, we could see just how special this car was going to be. Most Mopar guys have never seen one of these before and this one was going to be the best in the world. We wish we had some period pictures of the car back when it was new to compare the original with the restored. With the exterior of the car coming together nicely, it was time to finish off the interior. The restored dash went into place perfectly, nicely hiding the restored heater box and controls. The fresh dash pad and rebuilt instrument cluster are simply stunning. The original Inland shifter was rebuilt and nestled into the restored console beside a hidden CD player that's complete with a modern MP3 dock. Both the rear seat and front seats were expertly recovered, with new foams for good measure. The seats were installed over the new carpeting and sound deadener, which are topped with new floor mats. The door panels are new and the door handles and window cranks are re-chromed originals. Whenever possible, we used original 1967 parts for the restoration of this Barracuda and it shows! Our expert interior restoration specialist, Ralph Farinacci, installed a brand new black vinyl convertible top, along with a correct black vinyl top boot to finish off this rare Barracuda. With the interior complete, we turned our attention to the trunk, where a correct reproduction trunk mat was put into place, with a correct spare and jack assembly. This amazing and rare Barracuda was complete! If you are a classic car collector, there are cars that are rare (1 of 7 built with a 440, a four speed, with blue paint, a black top and a white interior) and then there are cars that are RARE. We have sold a 1 of 17 1971 Pontiac GTO Judge Convertible for $280,000.00. Guess what? Chrysler made half as many 1967 Plymouth Barracuda Formula S convertibles with a big block. And how many are still with us? One? Two? In fact, there are fewer 1967 big block convertibles in existence than 1971 Plymouth Hemicuda convertibles. Are they as valuable? Heck no. But if you are a Mopar collector with just about everything else in your collection, you need this car. This Barracuda is special, and it belongs in the hands of someone who has just about everything except this car. Outside of a 1967 HEMI GTX or Coronet, what other 67 Mopar is worth having? Flawlessly restored, numbers matching, documented, with a near complete owner history, this is an extremely significant and rare car that you will most likely never see for sale again.
