Extremely Rare Car. One of 10 Known to Exist. The Subject of a Chapter in a Well-Known Book. LB6A/50/503 Burgundy with Tan Leather Interior The 2.6 Litre was Lagonda’s first postwar model, and was a technically sophisticated clean sheet design that owed its existence to some of the best and brightest names in British motoring: Frank Feeley, Walter Owen Bentley, and David Brown. The exterior coachwork was designed by Frank Feeley, who also designed the Aston Martin DB2, while the mechanical components, particularly the lovely twin-cam inline-6, were designed by W.O. Bentley, and David Brown provided additional technical refinements and the backing to put the car in production. The heart of the car and its story is famously W.O. Bentley’s 2.6 liter dual overhead cam inline-6 that also powered the DB2. W.O. Bentley had joined Lagonda in 1935, after his three year obligation to Rolls-Royce was met following their absorption of Bentley Motors Ltd. in late 1931. In the 1930s, he was Lagonda’s chief designer and was responsible for their sophisticated V12 engine and several other sophisticated cars during the interwar years. After World War II, he designed the 2.6 liter twin cam inline-6 for the Lagonda 2.6 Litre, and it is reportedly this engine specifically that motivated David Brown to purchase Lagonda in 1947 since he had purchased Aston Martin earlier that year and was still utilizing the pushrod actuated inline-4 that Aston had on hand. Ultimately, the 2.6 Litre became W.O. Bentley’s last car design. When Brown bought Lagonda in 1947, they were already working on the 2.6 Litre, which, in addition to Bentley’s inline-6, had a host of other sophisticated features. This included independent suspension all round (including coil springs and dual wishbones at the front), inboard rear brakes, and X braced chassis. While prototypes had a Cotal pre-selector gearbox, David Brown supplanted this with the “David Brown” synchronized 4-speed gearbox, also shared with the DB2. The cars were available in open, closed, and saloon forms, and were sophisticated, luxurious, and expensive. Just 550 examples of all body styles were built in all, of which perhaps 50 were dropheads. This particular car was restored from the ground up some years ago by its previous owner, who was an aerospace engineer and professor at Cornell by the name of John L. Lumley. Lumley purchased the car in Scotland needing restoration from a fellow who owned another 2.6 Litre Drophead and brought the car back to the United States where he embarked on a thorough restoration. He discusses the restoration at length in his book, “Still Life with Cars: An Automotive Memoir”, and devotes an entire chapter to this particular car. There are also photos of the car from 1970, when it was seen parked on the street in 1978. While in the UK, the car wore registration number GKW 769. Today, it remains in sound overall condition and is a nice driving example that presents well overall but has some patina. The paintwork was done to high standards and is glossy, but shows some checking in places and the occasional chip or scratch. The body is straight and solid with good panel fit and operation. The chrome is very good, with minimal pitting and only light surface scratches. The lights and glass are very good throughout, with no major signs of wear or deterioration. The car is equipped with Lucas fog lamps. The top is high quality canvas and is in very good condition. The interior is in good overall condition. The leather has been redyed and is in good shape, with some creasing and minor cracking in evidence. Lumley comments on the impressive condition of the upholstery when he purchased the car, and it is likely that he opted to keep what may be the original upholstery when he restored the car. The wood dashboard is in great shape, as are the various switches and instruments. The carpet is high quality wool and in very good condition. The engine compartment has been beautifully restored and is nicely detailed and quite clean. The valve covers are polished and the various accessories have been attractively refinished in semi-gloss black. The glass washer fluid reservoir is in place, as is the factory air cleaner and heater system trunking. The trunk has a rubber mat in place which is in excellent order and the jack and a tool roll are in place. The car runs and drives well, with a great exhaust note and properly tuned engine. The controls are positive throughout, with a substantial and confidence inspiring solidity for all inputs. The gearbox is a pleasure to use with good synchromesh. The brakes are effective although they pull the car to the left somewhat. The steering is tight and it is easy to place the car accurately. This is an extremely rare opportunity to acquire a sophisticated and rare car that embodies a fascinating point in British motoring history. The result of a collaboration of some of the great engineers and industrialists of the time, the car has a sophisticated driveline and chassis which makes it feel more modern than its build date would suggest. This particular example has been well-restored and is a pleasure to use. Mileage assumed to be actual. Please call (206) 467-6531 for additional information. LB6A/50/503 Transmission 4-Speed Manual 1950 Lagonda 2.6 Litre Drophead Coupe s/n LAG50/112, engine no. 1964 Daimler SP250 Dart / A FULL SUB-FRAMED & RACE READY AC COBRA ALTERNATIVE ...fun to drive on street... Track or Strip ready! A real unique performance built car & head turner you can hear coming your way. RACE READY: This is a vintage FRAME OFF Rebuild as a true Street & Track Racer, an AC Cobra alternative. This light 2,200 lb. fiberglass car has gone from the small factory rated 140HP V8 to a newer built vintage HP Chevy 307 Racing Small Block V8 engine (stroked Chevy 283 race block with 327 crank, forged pistons & aluminum heads) aluminum free flow heads, air-gap torker aluminum manifold, Demon carburation & direct side pipe racing style exhaust… now producing close to 400HP! ALL STREET LEGAL & fun to drive! The HP V-8 is backed by a new 5-speed (4-speed+overdrive gear) stick, manual transmission coupled to a newly done Austin Healey Racing 4:11 differential; rear end. It now has a fully built square tube & rigid X-pattern full sub-frame assembly, racing springs & full disc brakes. Slotted aluminum racing style knock-off wheels and new high performance radial tires, 70 series 14" front and 15" rear. Racing seats, racing harness belts & dual roll bars make this Daimler ready to go on the street or track. Underneath is all new. Professionally built by a noted race shop with square tube X-Type sub-frame, all new springs, stiffened racing suspension, braking & exhaust systems… no expense was spared on the build of this rare breed of car. Only 1,200 of these LHD models were imported to the USA market as they were very expensive in their day. Many of these were lost over the years or returned back to the European market due to their popularity. It is estimated that less than a hundred or so now remain as drivers in the USA. There are no other Daimler SP-250’s built like this one… this is not a kit car or AC Cobra clone… this is the real thing! A street legal driver that is race ready to take on anything and everything. This is a very rare breed & investment grade vehicle that turns heads wherever it goes. The car only has 282 miles since full rebuild completed about 2002. The original body documentation shows that car had 64,000 actual miles when it was redone. The owner that had this done professionally and spent tons of money at a race prep shop to do this right! You cannot buy a fixer car and replicate this thype of work for such a low price as now offered. Unfortunately he passed right at time of completion of his dream car. The car then sat for years before being transferred, sold by a nephew who did not know much about this car. This has got to be one of the quickest, and most fun street machines I have ever driven. It is well balanced, tight and handles amazingly. It was built with professionally mounted frame integrated dual roll bars. It has racing harness belts to hold you in secure. The car still has the old original soft top which is rarely used. With the new sub frame & pro-build, this car is solid in and out. The doors do not sag, close with a solid click to fit flush & tight when fully closed. The trunk holds a large lightweight 10+ gallon center mounted racing style fuel cell leaving tons of storage space for those fun weekend drives. I have driven this car at full freeway speeds, and out of area car shows. There are no overheating or other issues, all lights work well, you can see everything is fresh and new under this car. It runs smooth and strong all day long. Some of the photos with top up are from a day out with a magazine photographer, professional model & car shoot that used this rare car as the feature car. I have a few framed & signed photos from that featured shoot. "http://www.youtube.com/v/zXSjkyoYl4I?fs=1&hl=en_US" CLICK VIDEO LINK: Here is a link to a video I did after pulling the car out fresh from the garage. I had to use a stationary tripod... so this video does not do the car justice. If desired, this car could easily burn rubber through all of the gears! I was told that car was clocked and estimated after first build as an 11 second street machine, but actuall pro-built for handling & the track. What is nice is that it can also be a very tame weekend cruiser... it idles and cruises around town very nicely. The 4:11 gearing can get it going quick, yet with the overdrive this car runs smooth drives the streets and highways at full speeds & lower RPM cruising...it stays cool and smooth all day long. Probably the quickest, and most fun, yet street legal car I have ever driven around town! Fire it up and it does turn heads! Thanks for looking & Good Luck Bidding! THIS rare Daimler “DART” SP250 is VIN 100789… the 798th SP250 produced in England. It was given title in the USA as a 1964 vehicle, but actual production numbers show it was produced about 1962… with body number 737-1310. TERMS OF SALE: $1500.00 deposit due upon purchase and balance due seller within 5 days, unless prior arrangements approved by seller. Please do not bid unless you have funds in hand. This is a 50+ year old vintage vehicle that has been mechanically rebuilt from the frame up as noted. As such it is sold as is shown, and no car on the road is perfect so do expect further restorations. I would not rate it as a #1 show car. This is a rare and investment grade vehicle, with clear title in hand. Do bid with confidence as I maintain a high rating and have sold numerous collector type vehicles over many years. Buyer is fully responsible for all transportation costs; with possible moving or storage fees if car held much more than 2 to 3 weeks after purchase. Daimler SP250 (1st known as the Daimler Dart) 1959 - 1964 During the late 1950's, Daimler introduced a pre-production they named the Daimler Dart, at the New York Auto Show at the beginning of 1959, but renamed it after the Chrysler Company let it be known that they had already registered the name for Dodge, which had used the Dart name on a concept car. They planned to launch the name on a Dodge production car in 1960. Consequently Daimler renamed the car "Sports 250.'' This name was soon changed to just "SP250''. SP (for sports) 250 (2.5 litre engine). Launched in 1959 the Daimler SP250 was impressively fast, mainly thanks to the new engineer, Edward Turner, who previously worked for Triumph motorcycles. The SP250 only weighed 2,220 pounds, so its engine provided very lively. It developed 140 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 155 pounds-feet of torque at 3,600, enough to propel the 1,025 kg (2,220 lb) car from zero to 96 km/h (60 mph) in a very respectable 9 seconds. this compared favourably to it’s contemporaries of the time, the TR3 (13.2 sec), the Austin Healey Mk1 (11.4 sec) and the MGA (14.6 sec). The top speed for the SP250 was 196 km/h (122 mph). It’s front coil springs and A-arms were the same as the Triumph's, and the four-speed manual transmission was similar. The SP250 was later offered with a three-speed automatic gearbox for the US market. Some British police departments even bought the car as a high speed traffic pursuit car. An advanced Dunlop all-disc brake system provided necessarily good stopping ability. The car was configured as a two-seater convertible. The SP250 was designed with roll-up windows instead of the awkward, leaky plastic side curtains. And the SP250 could be purchased with a lift-off hardtop or the removable folding fabric top which gave it a classic British sports design. Today the SP250 is one of the most sought-after post-war Daimler, with buyers paying extremely high prices for relatively 'ordinary' examples. While it’s unusual styling enhances its interest and appeal as a true icon of the sixties. Due to rarity and iconic styling, these are poised to be a great investment of a rare breed. Great Britain produced only from 1959 – 1964. Total built: 2,648 with USA LHD Market only 1,200 sent. Thanks for LOOKING and GOOD LUCK BIDDING!
