This included success in both the marketing department and making the performance package more powerful than it had been the year before. One reason there was a jump in popularity was the increase in marketing to begin and that marketing was far more youthful to market the cars to younger drivers. Another, and perhaps bigger factor was that the package was faster for the year. The new 400 CID V8 was reserved solely for use in the Oldsmobile 442 package. The engine produced 345 horsepower, beating the previous 442 package s horsepower by 35. The engine also produced an impressive (for the time) 440 lbs./ft. of torque, which was 85 more than the year before. The engine was now part of the trio of features that provided the 442 its name: the 400 CID engine, 4-barrel carb and dual exhaust. Despite the performance improvements, the 442 package kept the reputation it had developed the previous year as being relatively mild-mannered and one of the best handling mid-sized cars in all of General Motors. Most of this was achieved through a carefully tuned suspension that included front and rear anti-roll bars that was much stiffer than the standard suspensions available for the models. The 442 was available with an automatic for the first time, offering the two-speed Jetaway automatic. This particular Olds 442 is in very nice shape an is, for the most part, a well preserved, straight original car that has had some light cosmetic restoration along the way to keep it looking as nice as possible. The engine, transmission and the rest of the running gear is in excellent shape, running and driving perfectly in line with one might expect with a well preserved classic Muscle Car. The power steering and brakes make the car easy to maneuver. The body is remarkably straight with no modification visible with close inspection and no signs of rust issues in the past or present. VERY UNIQUE TO GM FREMONT,CALIFORNIA BUILT CARS IN THE FIREWALL DATA PLATE. ONLY CARS BUILT THERE COME WITH THE STAMPING, MAGIC MIRROR ACRYLIC LACQUER BODY BY FISHER STAMPING AT THE BOTTOM OF THE TAG. 442'S BUILT AT OTHER GM ASSEMBLY PLANTS WERE STAMPED WITH 4V IN THE LOWER RIGHT CORNER. CARS BUILT IN FREMONT,CALIFORNIA DO NOT HAVE THIS STAMPING. THIS IS A REAL 442, WITH ALL CORRECT FRAME STAMPING, AND A COPY OF THE ORIGINAL CALIFORNIA TITLE, WITH THE ORIGINAL BLACK LICENSE PLATE NUMBER.THIS IS ALL INCLUDED WITH THE PAPERWORK AND HISTORY OF THE CAR. I PURCHASED THE CAR FROM THE SECOND OWNERS DAUGHTER. APPROXIMATLY SIX YEARS AGO.HE HAD PASSED AWAY AND LEFT THE 442 AND SEVERAL OTHER VEHICLES TO HIS DAUGHTER, UPON RECEIVING THE CAR IT UNDERWENT A NO EXPENSE SPARRED, GROUND UP RESTORATION. ALTHOUGH THE ENGINE WAS DYNODE IT WAS BROKEN IN AT MC BETT'S, AND ESTIMATED HORSEPOWER IS BETWEEN 400-425. This is a really rare car and its numbers all match, Cutlass Calis Hurst Olds W30 with 70K orginial miles. Only 2,499 made and only a handful left on the planet. Only a short time ago, the car received a nice restoration. Here is a partial list of some of the things done to it. Mechanical: The carborator was professionally rebuilt by Custom Carbs Complete tune up New belts New hoses New fuel pump New valve cover gaskets New heater core New shocks New brakes New catalytic converter New partial exhaust Body: All moldings and chrome removed Paint stripped to bare metal Quality base coat clear coat pain refinish All gaps are perfect along with the body which is nice and straight. Never any rust repair. Interior: New carpet New bucket seat upholstery (NOS vinyl) All gauges work. The car also has been fitted with new BP Goodrich TA radial tires, the original wheels are in excellent condition. Overall the car is in very nice shape inside and out. More about the Hurst Olds in 1979: However, in 1979, during the second gas crisis, when prices shot up to about $1.25 a gallon from around 70 cents, Oldsmobile brought back the famed Hurst/Olds name in the new Cutlass body and based it on the Calais model. In the January 1980 issue of Super Stock & Drag Illustrated, an article by Mike Rowell almost apologized for featuring a 1979 car in a 1980 magazine, but he had good reason. In 1979, the G-body GM cars all had small, anemic engines, ranging from a V-6, a 260 V-8, or the 305 Chevrolet V-8. But the Hurst/Olds used the 350 engine from the larger cars to add performance. In fact, the 1979 Hurst/Olds was the only A-body GM car to use this engine. Rowell went onto say that the Hurst/Olds was the kind of car that some racers like as a daily driver. While some drag racers drive hot, semi-race cars on the street, and some rattle around in pickups, a sizable number want a sharp-looking, comfortable luxury car with above-average performance and perhaps a little extra something to set it off from the crowd. The Hurst/Olds fills these specs. While the '79 Hurst/Olds was the first of its breed not to offer an engine of more than 400 cubic inches, it was a performance car, when, in 1979, even the top Corvette engine wheezed out 225hp. That year, the 170hp Hurst/Olds held its own against similar performance cars of the day like the Turbo Buick and R/T Dodges. The 350 Olds that year featured a 700cfm Rochester Quadrajet and offered decent response and fuel mileage. The Hurst/Olds also featured a dual exhaust system consisting of a single pipe leading from the Y-pipe through a single-inlet catalytic converter and into a dual-outlet muffler with twin tailpipes. Nevertheless, Olds engineers insisted that the system offered reduced back pressure, even if it had a single catalytic converter. The engine was hooked to a Turbo Hydra-Matic 350 transmission (because the stronger Turbo 400 was discontinued) that was stirred by the already legendary Hurst Dual Gate shifter, which was last available on the '79 cars and came with a lifetime warranty. It has power windows, power steering, power brakes, power top (not functional), super deluxe radio, padded dash, parking brake light, stainless steel three-spinner wire wheel covers, courtesy light package, windshield washer, deluxe steering wheel with horn ring, wide white wall tires, and a rare conventional kit. MOST AUCTIONS END EARLY DUE TO EARLY SALES The engine is a good running 324CI 185HP overhead valve V8 with an automatic transmission, which the shifter has been relocated to the floor (I will say it does take some practice getting it in and out of gear with the modified shifter, this set up is less than ideal). The car runs and drives pretty nice. Its a driver quality car, and it appears that way; this is not a concourse Amelia Island car, rather a nice cruiser that will gain respect every show it attends. The bumpers are EXCELLENT, which is HUGE money to restore. They must have recently been replaced because they look great. One of the rear bumper guards needs to be replaced or rechromed. The body is pretty straight and the paint looks good. I would rate it a 6.5-7 out of 10. The finish resembles an original 1954 Oldsmobile color, Etna Maroon. The doors shut nice and you don't have to slam them. The bottom of the passenger door has some bodywork at the bottom, where the original seam is. The windshield has two dime size stars/chips which were hard to photograph. The trunk lock is not installed but I do have it and there are keys with it. The continental kit wheel cover does not fit too well, I couldn't get it to strap around the tire, maybe its too big? I recommend taking the maroon tire cover and stainless band off while driving. It has a good Coker white wall for a spare. The trunk pan has had some work done which I have photographed. The frame is solid. The floor braces have had some work done in the past which I tried to photographed. It is pretty solid underneath. There is a new fuel tank. Door handles, hood ornament, and stainless trim are in great shape. Im not sure whats defective with the convertible top, but it does operate manually and its in nice shape. All the power windows operate with the exception of the driver rear window. The interior is clearly not original but is in nice shape. The carpeting is OK and so are the sill plates, they are not perfect. The padded dash is in great shape. The steering wheel has a couple big cracks. The glove box does not have a liner. The silver interior trim piece on top of the passegner rear panel is missing, please see photos. I have described this car VERY accurately, as I always do. If there is something I left out, please let me know and feel free to ask any questions to make you comfortable bidding or buying. MOST AUCTIONS END EARLY DUE TO EARLY SALES The engine is a good running 324CI 185HP overhead valve V8 with an automatic transmission, which the shifter has been relocated to the floor (I will say it does take some practice getting it in and out of gear with the modified shifter, this set up is less than ideal). The car runs and drives pretty nice. Its a driver quality car, and it appears that way; this is not a concourse Amelia Island car, rather a nice cruiser that will gain respect every show it attends. The bumpers are EXCELLENT, which is HUGE money to restore. They must have recently been replaced because they look great. One of the rear bumper guards needs to be replaced or rechromed. The body is pretty straight and the paint looks good. I would rate it a 6.5-7 out of 10. The finish resembles an original 1954 Oldsmobile color, Etna Maroon. The doors shut nice and you don't have to slam them. The bottom of the passenger door has some bodywork at the bottom, where the original seam is. The windshield has two dime size stars/chips which were hard to photograph. The trunk lock is not installed but I do have it and there are keys with it. The continental kit wheel cover does not fit too well, I couldn't get it to strap around the tire, maybe its too big? I recommend taking the maroon tire cover and stainless band off while driving. It has a good Coker white wall for a spare. The trunk pan has had some work done which I have photographed. The frame is solid. The floor braces have had some work done in the past which I tried to photographed. It is pretty solid underneath. There is a new fuel tank. Door handles, hood ornament, and stainless trim are in great shape. Im not sure whats defective with the convertible top, but it does operate manually and its in nice shape. All the power windows operate with the exception of the driver rear window. The interior is clearly not original but is in nice shape. The carpeting is OK and so are the sill plates, they are not perfect. The padded dash is in great shape. The steering wheel has a couple big cracks. The glove box does not have a liner. The silver interior trim piece on top of the passegner rear panel is missing, please see photos. I have described this car VERY accurately, as I always do.
