That’s right, it has every base 442 option including the 455 big block that in the 1971 production year was built to the same specs as the 442. In 1971, the difference between the SX and the 442 is simply in the “presentation”. Basically it’s a “stripe & badge delete” 442 that was conceived and built for a very specific, well heeled target market. The target market for the SX was bankers, lawyers, doctors and corporate types who could afford a top of the line luxury “high performance” car but did not necessarily want all the “showmanship” that came with stripes, spoilers and emblems. It was kind of a factory “sleeper”. The ONLY outward sign that this was something special was the SX emblem on the fenders and of course the signature 442 rear bumper and trumpet exhaust. Options, Options & more Options This particular SX convertible is a LOADED luxury muscle car with every standard 442 option PLUS many options above & beyond the 442 package. 442 performance package options - 4bbl / 455 - Turbo 400 automatic transmission - Special Suspension - Dual Exhaust - Sport Mirrors - Special Bumper with cutouts for Trumpet exhaust tips Options beyond base 442 package: - Air Conditioning ..... COLD (updated to modern R34) - Power Top / Power Steering / Power DISC brakes - Rally Pack Gauges / Tachometer / electric Clock - Ram Air Induction Hood with special Air Cleaner - Bucket seat / floor sifter Console - AmFm STEREO Radio (NOTE – only working intermittently) - Rally Steering Wheel - Tilt Steering Column - Electric Trunk Release button in glove box - Rally II Wheels - Special Interior under dash remote Hood Lock - Optional heavy rubber trunk mat - etc, etc Mondello Performance Estimated at 365hp with 500 ft lbs of torque 442 folks will instantly recognize Dr. Olds and Mondello Performance as the “go to source” for the Olds 455 power plant. When rebuilding the original motor in this car the goal was to achieve a power output that was more in line with 1970 specs. The motor was bored .030 over and a Mondello camshaft, special lifters and Flow Master exhaust were selected based on “direct consultation” with Mondello Performance. Additionally, a very mid stall was added in the turbo 400 tranny rebuild. The end result is that “smooth” on demand power and torque that made the 442 and its 455 power plant legendary. Ultimate road trip car It has a TALL 2.73 highway gear that allows for low rev highway driving …. this car is the ultimate road trip car. NO high revs at highway speeds, NO annoying aggressive lope, NO overheating and NO bad habits of any kind. Just boat loads of civilized long legged power from the Olds 455 torque monster. Great History 2 Texas owners since new Sold new at Medor Olds in Fort Worth Texas to its first owner, James Ward who, prior to his death, sold it to the 2nd owner and a personal friend of mine, Mike Wisdom. Mike purchased the car approximately 16 years ago. This same friend (Mike Wisdom) and fellow Texan does high quality car restoration work and has done some work for me over the years. The original owner loved this car and after logging 130k miles he parked it some time in late 1992, early 1993 (…. see the last Texas Inspection Sticker in photos above dated 5/29/92). After retiring the car, Mr. Ward held on to it with dreams of restoring it to its former glory. In the late ‘90’s he ended up taking to my friend for a full restoration but, due to failing health, ultimately ended up selling his dream machine to my friend. Restored by 2nd owner Mike Wisdom rebuilt virtually everything on the car. His goal was two fold. To bring the car back to show room new condition and to boost the performance to be more in line with the 1970 442. The restoration was completed about 1 year ago and has less than 500 miles since completion (most of these 500 miles have been logged by me). It shows no evidence of wear and looks show room new. While the original miles on the car are just over 131k, I have listed it at 500 miles which is the miles on the car since a total restoration. In any event the car will be sold as mileage EXEMPT due to its age. NOTE: The top currently on the car is serviceable, however it does not present as nice as the rest of the car so it is currently scheduled to be REPLACED along with a new windshield as the current windshield has one rock chip. The top on the car is white and will be replaced with a white top. These items are scheduled and will be done prior to shipping the car to the new owner. Good condition PRIOR to restoration Prior to restoration the car was in good condition (never wrecked, no rust issues and completely unaltered). It had been in a dry Texas climate since new and driven by one adult owner who cherished the car. However, after 130k miles and 21 years of service, it was tired and in need of some love. I saw this car many times BEFORE it was restored. In fact, on numerous occasions I tried to purchase it in its un-restored state from my friend. His answer was always …. “No, I am going to restore this one for myself”. That day finally came and the results are most impressive. Lucky for me, Mike’s focus is now turned to his next restoration project and I ended up with the car. This history is now documented for the lucky new owner in the above VIDEO. A copy of the video and these photos along with the Broadcast Card and old inspection sticker will go with the car. PRICE Like all my cars, I have priced this car very fair for what it is. I do NOT have to sell this car. This is a very special car in every way that actually matters. I believe it would be impossible to duplicate at this price. If you were lucky enough to find a high quality survivor 1971 SX convertible with these options and paid a restoration shop to bring it to this level, the restoration cost alone would easily exceed the price I am selling it for. REAR CENTER BRAKE LINE REPLACED AT TOP OF REAR END, AIR CLEANER RECONDITIONED WITH NEW STICKERS. FINALLY EXHAUST MANIFOLDS WERE SAND BLASTED AND CERAMIC COATED MANIFOLD GRAY. BODY PAINT IS A REPAINT OF THE CORRECT OCEAN TURQUOISE DONE BEFORE I BOUGHT IT. IN PREVIOUS AD I WAS ASKED ABOUT RUST......THESE CARS WERE PRONE TO RUSTING IN A HARSH CLIMATE. THIS CAR CAME ORIGINALLY FROM TENNESSEE. SO TO ANSWER THE RUST QUESTION. WHAT WAS DONE TO THE CAR WAS THE TOP OF THE COWL WAS REPLACED WITH NEW PANEL, AND A NEW FLOOR PAN REPLACED IN THE DRIVERS FLOOR. THERE WAS SOME RUST ON THE SIDES 5 OR 6 SPOTS ON BOTH SIDES ABOUT 3 INCHES ABOVE THE CHROME TRIM LINE UNDER THE VINYL TOP. WAS TAKEN TO BARE METAL AND TREATED AND PAINTED BEFORE INSTALLATION OF NEW TOP. NO FENDERS, QUARTERS WERE NOT REPLACED OR REPAIRED . THEY DID NOT NEED IT. ALSO ASKED ABOUT THE A/C AND WHAT I THINK IS WRONG. I REPLACED THE A/C HOSES ON THE CAR BECAUSE THEY HAD LEAKED OUT FREON AND OIL. THERE IS CURRENTLY NO LEAKS IN THE AC SYSTEM. THE A/C WAS MORE THAN LIKELY CHARGED AT ONE TIME , AND NO OIL ADDED WHICH CAUSED INTERNAL FRICTION. IT COOLS BUT IS NOISEY. I DID REPLACE THE A/C CLUTCH IDLER BEARING. IF THE CAR IS SOLD I WILL FURNISH ENOUGH R12 FREON TO RECHARGE THE SYSTEM. ALSO TRANSMISSION QUESTION. EXCEPT FOR CHANGING THE TRANSMISSION FILTER AND REAR TAIL SHAFT SEAL , THE TRANSMISSION AS FAR AS I KNOW HAS NOT BEEN INTO. BECAUSE OF THE AGE OF THE CAR (46 YEARS) I WOULD ADVISE REBUILDING THE TRANSMISSION. I DON'T CARE HOW FEW MILES ARE ON A CAR THE RUBBER PRODUCTS IN TRANSMISSION WILL HARDEN AND GIVE PROBLEMS AFTER A SERIOUS AMOUNT OF YEARS. THE CULPRIT IS MOST LIKELY A FRONT PUMP SEAL. THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTS FINE BUT , THESE CARS WERE KNOWN FOR THERE TORQUE, AND I WOULD NOT RISK DAMAGING THE MATCHING NUMBERS TRANSMISSION BY NOT DOING THE REBUILD. TO REPLACE THE FRONT PUMP SEAL THE TRANSMISSION HAS TO COME OUT ANYWAY AND IT MAKES SINCE TO GO AHEAD AND REPLACE CLUTCHES AND WHATEVER ELSE IT NEEDS. ALSO IN THE PHOTO WITH THE RED ARROWS. THE TWO TRIM END PIECES ARE PLASTIC AND WERE BROKEN , ALSO THE REAR WINDOW WINDLACE NEEDS REPLACING. A LOT OF THINGS I DID OR REPLACED I DID NOT MENTION IN THE ORIGINAL AD. I HAVE MANY RECIEPTS IF SOLD FOR THE NEW OWNER. THINGS THAT WILL NEED TO BE ADDRESSED BY NEW OWNER . A/C COOLS BUT HAS A WHINE WHEN TURNED ON. TRANSMISSION HAS A MINOR LEAK. PHOTOS OF BUBBLE IN PAINT AND SCRATCHED CHROME TRIM AT BOTTOM OF BACK GLASS. TRIM HAS SOME DENTS NOT PERFECT. CRUISE CONTROL HOOKED BACK UP. AND LAST DEFROSTER IF WANTED BACK IN CAR REINSTALL IF DESIRED. I AM A RETIRED AUTOMOTIVE MECHANIC AND WORKED ON THESE CARS WHEN THEY WERE NEW AND WILL SAY THAT THE INSIDE OF THE ENGINE DURING MY INSPECTION WAS VERY CLEAN. THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THE CAR WAS 52 YEARS OLD WHEN HE PURCHASED THE CAR , SO HE DID TAKE CARE OF THE CAR AT THE TIME AND THAT IS PROBABLY WHY THERE WERE SO MANY OPTIONS ON THE CAR. I WOULD SAY WITH CONFIDENCE THAT THE ACTUAL MILEAGE IS 100,644 MILES..HAS CURRENT TEXAS STATE INSPECTION STICKER AND REGISTRATION THROUGH NEXT YEAR , WITH YEAR OF MANUFACTURE PLATES.
