With a massive aftermarket and knowledgeable enthusiast network, buying one is like going to summer camp. These are reliable, and easy-to-repair cars that are ideal for the hobbyists who likes to drive their hardware. This 1953 MG TD is an extremely nice example that's ready to take the long way home today. An MG TD represents the old world style of craftsmanship. There was a lot of Detroit iron being produced in the 1950s, but this roadster is proudly supported by an ash wood frame. Because of this, owing an MG stands out in the crowd, and this one even goes one step further. Most of these roadsters have either been painted British Racing Green or red. This one doesn't totally skip the crimson, but it uses it as an accent color on the wheels to complement the factory-spec black paint. These cool little roadsters are best for sunny day outings, but if the weather does turn wet, the folding roof and side wind deflectors will help keep your dry for the drive home. Inside the motto should be, "No radio. No windows. No problem." These MGs are a great lesson in purist motoring. A grippy steering wheel, clear gauges, and a manual transmission - that's all you get because that's all you need. Your senses will go into overload as the wind whips through the interior and you help create the wonderful soundtrack from the motor. Being a minimalist does not mean lacking in style. Attention is guaranteed when you park this British invasion among the big Detroit metal at car shows. This TD is especially nice as the red vinyl interior matches the painted red wheels on the exterior. The engine is a 1250 cc inline-four, and it helps the car really shine. It's an overhead valve unit with twin SU carburetors. The motor was built for you to go out and row through the gears of the four-speed transmission and get the most out of this little motor. Just like the legs on a little dog, the MG's engine has a peppy attitude that's happiest when it's kicking just about as fast as it can. The light body weight, and independent front suspension, all contribute to this sporting attitude. But to get the most fun out of this roadster, it requires you. That's what makes these MGs so popular, you are connected with the machine. This car needs you to get to the destination, and so when you arrive, it feels like an accomplishment. It's tough to deny yourself this classic fun when it's this affordable. Even more importantly, there are plenty of people who will see the investment potential, and so it won't last long in our showroom. There's a reason why cars like this 1952 MG TD were brought home by the hundreds by GIs returning from Europe, and why they remain wildly popular today. The look is pure pre-war, with separate fenders and a long hood, but the energetic handling and performance were quite contemporary. This original MG has been nicely restored, but not to the point where you're afraid to drive it, which misses the point entirely. The body construction was traditional, but that also means that it's light and easy to repair, and this one shows no signs of serious damage or the MG's arch-nemesis, rust. Hood and door fit are quite good, and the Nissan A20 Red paint is a very correct-looking finish that's got a great shine but no metallic, so it looks right on the diminutive little roadster. It shows only a few light signs of use, but the overall presentation is what endears MGs to their legions of fans, and this car looks very crisp and sharp thanks to all the recent work. Of course, things like the chrome grille, stand-alone headlights, and simple bumpers give it an old-fashioned look, and they're all in excellent shape, too. Inside the cabin, there's adequate room for two once you settle into the low bucket seats and assume the proper driving position. In actuality, you'll probably find it's easy to spend hours behind the wheel without fatigue and there's plenty of room for two normal-sized folks, so no complaints about long road trips in this neat little roadster. Well, maybe your cheeks will be hurting from grinning so much, but the driving experience is involving without being exhausting. The interesting split bench seat has been properly reupholstered in pleated black vinyl, which does a pretty good impersonation of leather without the added maintenance. Matching door panels are the essence of simplicity and black carpets complete the ensemble. The padded dashboard houses an array of modern instruments that retain the vintage British look, and we're particularly fond of the bright metal center panel with the secondary controls. The original three spoke steering wheel now wears a leather wrapper that makes it comfortable to grab. And since MG lovers are serious about their cars, this one offers a collapsible convertible top and side curtains as weather protection, which quickly sorts the men from the boys. The point of an MG isn't brute power, but they're plenty peppy with the 1300 cc inline-four, and it has a wonderful baritone exhaust note that's half the experience. This one is a wonderful runner, firing up easily through dual side-draft SU carburetors with chrome air cleaners. The whole engine is scarcely bigger than a briefcase, but all the parts are easy to get at and maintain, which is very convenient. The engine's linked to a slick-shifting 5-speed manual transmission whose light action and progressive clutch are the cornerstone of performance driving, and the overdrive gear makes long-distance touring comfortable and relaxing. The chassis is a simple ladder frame with an independent front suspension, a stainless steel exhaust system, and steel wheels with chrome hubcaps that look right and wear appropriately tall 165/80/15 radial tires. One drive and you'll see why it's so easy to love an MG and why the market on these cars is on the way up.
