1983 Mercury Cougar Base / LS 2-Door 3.8L This car for it's age is really clean of heavy rust surface rust has been seen. Under the hood are rough areas of surface rust. The dent on the right side behind the door is a minor repair. The door jams are solid,trunk lid all around the drip channel where the rubber seal is located. Solid int. floor trunk floor all the panels around outside ext. of the car look to be solid. All lights int. ext. headlights turns signals brake lights running light and dash lights are in working order. Ac blows cold when charged, fan blows smooth with low to high control switch. The heat work also.. The dash is perfect, no cracks. The whole dash looks brand new. The sun visors are stuck place lack of use I guess. Headliner and sun visors are little discolored. The center console has piece of sheet metal rising up on the corners. The seats in the front are little dirty could use a steam cleaning. The back seat looks to be clean no rips in int. seats. The seat belt sleeves are crack or half missing. Driver side door int. panel is a dirty. Windows crank up and down tight and solid. No water leaks. Doors do not hang they both close with ease. Trunk closes nicely. Trunk light works. Spare tire good shape holding air. Car and trunk smells clean. New pin stripe. The engine is a V6 3.8l that looks to have everything original. Never saw any smoke coming out of the tail pipe at start up or while idling or driving it. I have never checked the compression. Transmission shifts fine brakes work fine. The engine has always had a rough idle sometimes hard to start. We did find fuel leaking under the carb. I replaced the gaskets and base plate. Replaced fuel filter, accelerator pump,valve cover gaskets,coil,voltage regulator, wind shield motor,spark plugs repaired broken vacuum hoses, changed oil & filter. I worked on it trying to get to idle smoother but never could figure it out. I have drove the car it drives smooth and shifts smooth. I have own the car for a year now. I wanted a project car to play around with. I believe was either carb. or stretched timing chain, I'm know expert. The engine will need some work most likely something simple that I'm over looking. The car is really clean and well kept for it's age. 83 Cougars are hard to find. Hopefully someone will give this car a new home. I don't see anything leaking from under the car like anti freeze,oil, trans. oil. Muffler is quiet, good battery, tires will need to be replaced if you want to make safe for the street. All four tires are holding air. Shocks seem to be good. All part boxes will be left in trunk so can see what was replaced. Two repair manual books included. You see the mileage from one of my pics. I'm no expert on describing cars but I'm a honest person working with what I know of this car. I'll be glad to answer any question you may have. I bought this car from a wrecker company in Sarasota,Fl where my girlfriend use to work. The title is open. A bill of sale will be given and signed to both parties.

This car marks the end of the 60's muscle car era. A lighter body and a slightly longer wheel base than the 71 and the reintroduction of the convertible option and XR7 are part of this two year production run, after 73 the Cougar was moved to a bigger sedan like chassis. 1979 Mercury Cougar XR-7 Special Edition- Chamois Decor - ONE OF ONE !!!!! We are selling this car because we have bought another, and need the garage space. We are not a dealer and own one too many Cougars. We discovered this car in Avon Park, Florida. It was custom ordered from the local dealer, and remained with the elderly owner until his death. He sold it to his neighbor, who later died, and we bought it from his estate. We have the paperwork and receipts from new. We obtained the Marti report and found that this is One of One Cougar XR-7 and only one of twelve with the moonroof / Chamois Décor option. It has the special color-keyed factory styled steel wheels in chamois. The car is in impeccable condition. It is like a time capsule to 1979. It is perfect in every way and everything works and runs as it should. It has one small scratch in the original paint shown in the photos. That’s it! It has not been repainted, and we detailed and cosmetically restored it by cleaning. It has no power seats or windows, as the car was special ordered this way. It has all new brakes and rotors. The tires have perhaps 1000 miles on them. We replaced the radiator, condenser, drier, compressor, fan motor. The a/c is ice cold. The carburetor has been rebuilt. The 302-2v runs and purrs perfectly. We installed a dual exhaust on the vehicle. We replaced all of the shocks. The only two things is the clock does not work and the temperature cable needs adjustment at the heater control box. That is the extent of anything this fine car needs! There are no signs of wear or discoloration on the carpets or upholstery. The moonroof opens and closes and seals perfectly as it should. This car is laser straight and never been in any accidents. The paint shines and glistens everywhere. The chrome is great. The underside photos show it appears like a brand new car. There are no defects. Everything is as original except the dual exhaust. Every sticker is where it is supposed to be from the factory. The vinyl roof is in factory new condition. The glass is perfect. We added a wind deflector on the moon roof that is easily removed.
