Fortunately, this Merc is also a wonderful car in every way, so the flathead definitely went out with a bang. With all the focus on vintage hot-rodding, it's easy to forget that your parents and grandparents drove cars like this to work every day. With that in mind, you shouldn't be surprised that this one works as well as it does or that it looks so polished. The Mercury brand was hitting on all eight cylinders in 1953, boasting impressive sales and a rejuvenated image thanks to cars like this. The bright red paint is pretty close to the original Siren Red, and with that contrasting white roof, it has a high-profile look that fits the Monterey's upscale status. Coming out of long-term ownership (something like 60 years!), it's important to note that this car has never had a frame-off restoration, so it has looked this good pretty much its entire life. It's been repainted, but the super straight bodywork comes from clean Texas living not a restorer's tools, and it still fits together with a precision that feels authentic. Heavy chrome bumpers are in very good condition, and it appears that most of the stainless trim is original, so it could be easily buffed and polished to really stand out. The two-tone red and black interior was probably freshened at the same time the car was painted and shows almost no signs of use since then. The vinyl upholstery is durable and comfortable, stitched into factory-correct patterns that value simplicity over flash. The dashboard, however, is a different story with its futuristic look, floating instrument panel, and aircraft-style control levers for the secondary controls. Handsome door panels with contrasting off-white window moldings are in excellent shape and the headliner remains taut and wrinkle-free. Auxiliary gauges are neatly installed under the dash, the better to monitor the warmed-over flathead up front, but that seems to be the lone modification inside. The factory AM radio is still in the dash, and this car offers spacious accommodations in the back seat. The sanitary trunk is neatly finished and includes a full-sized spare tire. The 1953 Mercury flathead V8 is the one all the hot-rodders want, and for good reason: it's the biggest and most powerful of the bunch. With 255 cubic inches to work with, it's ripe for upgrades, and this one has been recently rebuilt. The most obvious tweaks are the Edelbrock aluminum heads and headers, but it's also got a mild camshaft inside and a 12-volt electrical system. It's not exactly race-ready, but it moves the tidy Merc effortlessly with that characteristic flathead burble. Part of the joy of a flathead like this is the way it goes about its business with great torque and a fun exhaust note that'll have you blipping the throttle as you go through tunnels. It's painted bright red, as it should be, and still carries neat little details like the mechanical fuel pump up top and Ford script hoses with correct clamps. The dual exhaust is recent and sounds exactly right, and the 3-speed manual transmission is a pleasure to slip through the gears. New 215/70/15 whitewall radials retain a certain vintage look but deliver modern handling that you'll definitely appreciate. A neat 2-door Merc with flathead power, this Monterey is a no-disappointments car that proves you don't need a roadster to have fun with a flathead. Well, aside from being an awesomely affordable V8-powered ragtop, it's the Mercury version of the Torino. This 1968 Montego convertible has a lot going for it, including a great color combination, 302 cubic inches of V8 power, and room for the whole family inside. This is the car that spawned the awesome Mercury Eliminator, although this is its more user-friendly sibling which is a very handsome mid-sized convertible. The white paint would be called Wimbledon White if it were wearing a Ford badge, and it shines up beautifully. It was likely repainted not too long ago and it has a very correct look overall; no stripes, no add-ons, and all the original trim was retained so it looks right. The car's proportions are excellent and the bodywork disguises its size rather well, but make no mistake, this is a big, comfortable luxury car. It doesn't appear to have ever been rusty or wrecked, and replacement panels for this car are virtually non-existent, so you know the sheetmetal is OEM-grade. Factory trim includes big chrome bumpers that are in excellent shape, contrasting trim along the rockers, as well as a unique woodgrained insert on the trunk lid to make it stand out in a crowd. The red interior is quite possibly original and shows extremely well. Bench seats mean there's plenty of room for everyone and details like the door panels and dash pad are in excellent condition, particularly for a car that's spent its life in the sun. It's possible that the carpets have been replaced, since they're in very good condition with no fading, and the upscale Mercury also includes a simulated burled walnut dash applique that warms things up a bit. Five round pods house the gauges, indicator lamps, and controls for the heater and defroster, and it's a cool look. Underneath, there are secondary controls as well as the original AM radio, which is due for an upgrade. If there's any single item showing its age, it's the steering wheel, which has a few cracks in the rim but is otherwise serviceable as-is. The black power convertible top is in good condition and offers a glass rear window and a matching red boot for when it's folded. The trunk is pretty original and could stand to be cleaned up a bit, but there's plenty of room as well as a full-sized spare tire. The 302 cubic inch V8 under the hood is smooth, torquey, and ready to rumble. Recently rebuilt, it runs superbly with a great eight-cylinder sound and the easy competence that only full-sized American luxury cars can deliver. It was correctly detailed with Ford Blue paint, original air cleaner, and fresh decals, so it looks great against the satin black inner fenders. All the ancillaries are new, too, including plugs, wires, radiator, master cylinder, and a rebuilt carburetor. The front suspension was rebuilt, there are new springs and shocks all around, and the 3-speed automatic transmission was recently serviced so it shifts properly. 3.00 gears out back make it a great cruiser that never seems to work very hard and a fresh alignment ensures that the 225/70/14 BFGoodrich T/A radials track straight. Look at the quality of the car and then the price and you'll have to admit that this is a heck of a lot of ragtop for not a lot of cash. Unusual, fun, and attractive, this Mercury offers a great alternative to the usual cars you see at the cruise night. With a subtle color combination, a remarkably handsome interior, and a thrifty drivetrain, it's a hobby car you can enjoy without guilt. The idea of the economy car isn't a new one, and even upscale Mercury was getting in on the act with the Comet. It offers styling cues taken from the full-sized machines sitting next to it in the showroom, but thanks to compact proportions, it was easy to drive and reasonably peppy even with its gas-sipping inline-six engine. This one shows straight sheetmetal thanks to a lifetime in the south, and while the code M Sultana White paint job is subtle, this one gets all its attention simply by being unusual. Dramatically carved sheetmetal topped by tiny fins that were the '50s last gasp give it a lot of visual interest and are actually helped by the low-key paint. Chrome and trim are quite good, and even on the budget-oriented Comet, there's quite a bit of it, including some rather massive-looking bumpers, a simple grille that should look familiar to Ford fans, and that stainless strip that outlines the car's profile and accentuates the kick-up behind the doors. This is a small car that looks big, which was entirely the point. The jewel in this Comet's crown has to be the beautifully reupholstered interior. For an affordable car at this price, you wouldn't expect it to be this nice, but they spent good money re-creating a period look with comfortable black cloth and white vinyl. Two-tone door panels are remarkably stylish for a basic car, with only the armrest showing its age after nearly 50 years of elbows resting on it. The instrument panel is a piece of '60s sculpture in bright metal and clear plastic, and offers both a temperature and a fuel level gauge in addition to the speedometer, all of which are in original condition and showing their age. There's a 3-speed manual transmission with column shift, but there are no options on this basic Merc: no radio, no power assists, no extras. However, you do get clean carpets, a taut headliner, and excellent use of colors give it a bright, airy feel inside, so it certainly doesn't feel like Mercury's lowest-priced car that year. Even the trunk is nicely finished and comes complete with a correct mat and a full-sized spare with matching cover. Code S means this car carries Ford's trusty 144 cubic inch inline-six fits neatly with the Comet's economy-based mission. But in the small car, it's reasonably peppy at the same time, with a suitably vintage grumble from the single exhaust system. Bright yellow on the valve cover and air cleaner works well with the basic black on the engine itself, making the machinery stand out against the white engine bay. Given the condition of the car, it should be no surprise that the engine bay is equally well-preserved with plenty of evidence of proper maintenance over the years. It starts easily and using a 3-speed manual transmission, pulls the car around with aplomb and pulls down remarkable fuel economy that's a boon to hobbyists today. The gas tank is relatively new, and original steel wheels wear a set of dog-dish hubcaps and recent 185/70/13 blackwall radials. Unusual yet eminently practical for today's times, this Comet is a great entry-level hobby car that won't cost you much now or on the road. Designed to bridge the gap between the Ford Deluxe and the Lincoln Zephyr, the Mercury was introduced in late 1938. Although the Ford family resemblance is clear, it rides on a unique frame, shares no body panels with any Ford, and is powered by a larger 239 cubic inch flathead V8 that made an extra 10 horsepower. Finished in correct and traditional Sahara Tan, this gorgeous Merc shows you why original colors always look best on old cars. Showing a lovely soft glow that is entirely appropriate, the paint and bodywork on this car are very good throughout, with the only real demerits being simply age-related. It's got a very period-correct look, with paint that shines up but isn't too perfect, excellent panel fit, and details that make the car look upscale, including pinstripes along the belt moldings. It is also loaded with accessories, including grille and bumper guards, fog lights, and a driver's side mirror, which ,believe it or not, wasn't on the standard equipment list. The running boards have been restored using the proper textured rubber, and all the chrome remains excellent. This is a car that will get a lot of appreciative second-glances, one because it's not quite a 1940 Ford, and two, because it's just so beautifully executed. Light tan leatherette upholstery gives the Mercury some of its elegant appeal, and the restoration that made the body look so good also addressed the interior. Correct materials and patterns were used throughout, and it shows only minor signs of use since it was completed. Tan carpets are a plush upgrade compared to the rubber floor mats in the base Fords, and this would be the first year for a column-mounted shifter, was sweeping the industry in an effort to increase legroom. The unique instrument panel is one of the earliest examples of driver ergonomics, with the full array of gauges angled upwards along with the steering column to face the driver. All the gauges are operational, and it includes a correct AM radio, which, as is typical, is sadly not working. A snug-fitting tan canvas convertible top is manually actuated, but folds easily into the well behind the seats where it's hidden under a matching tan boot. Even with the top down, the trunk is commodious thanks to the 4-inch wheelbase stretch compared to a Ford, and it has been fully carpeted for a luxurious look. Ford's justifiably famous flathead was heavily revised for use in the Mercury, effectively bridging the horsepower gap between the standard V8 and the Zephyr's V12 without added complexity. Steadily upgraded over the years, the 1940 flathead in this Merc offers insert type bearings for longevity and an improved cooling system to eliminate the early flatheads' overheating woes. Finished in proper olive green paint, the flathead is nicely detailed with a correct carburetor and oil bath air cleaner, a recent fuel pump, and a proper generator up top which still generates six volts. Underneath, the chassis appears to be pretty original, but it's in good order and sports a great-sounding exhaust system that gives it a wonderful flathead burble. 16-inch wheels wear gorgeous hubcaps and trim rings, plus a set of BFGoodrich wide whites for a period perfect look. With an interesting history, including a movie appearance, this is a very rare pre-war Mercury convertible that's also one of the best-driving of all flatheads. There are a few superficial rubs on the bumper and the interior is really pretty clean without damage or repairs. The leather shows some wear on the driver's seat and less on the passenger's. The back seat looks like is saw little use. Under the hood is dusty from sitting for the last few months. The repairs that took it off the road have been made and the car runs great. There are no engine lights on and the air blows cold. Everything seems to work. I think it could use a good cleaning, tires and shocks to make it a comfortable, safe and reliable daily driver. The car belongs to a friend, who only drove it a few thousand miles before parking it with need of repair. His recent illness prevents him from fixing the car, so it sat for a few more months. He needed help putting it back on the road. So, the intake manifold was professionally replaced yesterday and now it's for sale. With a unique body and interior, the Cougar is instantly recognizable, and nice ones, like this 1967 coupe, are an absolute pleasure to own and drive, especially with a sweet-running 289 under the hood. Originally painted Burgundy, this big cat now sports a bright red finish that's a lot more aggressive than the original hue, but perhaps more in tune with the performance side of the big cat's current configuration. Refinished several years ago, the paint remains in good condition, and all appearances suggest that this car was never rusty or a basket case. Instead, it appears to be a nicely maintained car that has never needed major surgery, and the factory-style panel gaps and alignment bear this out. The color isn't what it was born with but nobody can argue that bright isn't just as handsome on the upscale Cougar. The chrome is similarly nice and may be original, and the stainless fender moldings and window surrounds are still bright and shiny. The Cougar offered unique lighting, with folding headlights up front and sequential turn signals out back, and they all work properly and look awesome. Interior design in the Cougar was clearly inspired by aircraft, and it has a very cool '60s vibe that makes you think of Steve McQueen and Sean Connery movies when you're at the wheel. The front buckets have been reupholstered in black, and the vinyl is a close match to the original patterns used. The vast dashboard features round gauges with delicate markings and needles, reminiscent of the Smiths gauges found in British sports cars and the Shelby Cobra. Especially cool are the toggle switches for interior lighting and the very aircraft-like levers for the ventilation controls to the driver's left. An AM/FM/cassette stereo has been fitted in the original location right above the "garage" storage compartment, and there was no cutting, so it looks like it belongs and can be returned to original without worries. The surprisingly roomy trunk is outfitted with a plaid mat that fits well and looks right. Lift the Cougar's unique hood and you'll find what looks to be the original 289 cubic inch V8, similar to those found in cousin Mustang. It's had a nice makeover, with the usual Ford Blue paint on the engine itself, plus chrome valve covers and a cool air filter for the Edelbrock 4-barrel carb underneath. Power steering is suitable to the big Cat and the Flowmaster exhaust system sounds very healthy. It's backed by a C4 3-speed automatic transmission and one look around underneath will convince you that this is one heck of a nice original car, because there's even proper overspray on the floors. 3.25 gears out back mean that this Cougar is your next road trip machine and beautiful 14-inch styled steel wheels wear perfectly-sized 215/70/14 BFG radials.
