This incredible Mercury kustom! With the universal appeal of high dollar eye candy, and the road going prowess of a fully sorted cruiser, this slick Monterey is a unique, well built classic that provides its owner the best of both worlds. And what's better: you can have your show stopper and drive it too for a fraction of the money and time it takes to complete a ground-up build. If you're an anxious buyer who's tired of the 'garage furniture' culture that seems to pervade the classic car hobby, this stunning Merc is one of the coolest road-ready customs your money can buy! BODYWORK/TRIM Purchased in 2008 as a fully restored driver, this slick hardtop has been carefully finessed into a one-of-a-kind piece of art. Of course, every work of art needs a solid canvas, and under the car's many modifications you'll find solid steel that, based on appearance, has never been botched or wrinkled in any significant way. That smooth surfacing makes for a super clean profile that's been laboriously block-sanded and covered in a stunning combination of Ford Red Candy Metallic and Jet Black 2-stage. And ultimately, the car debuted as an excellent looking classic that walks a fine line between traditional street rod swing and outrageous SoCal flair. A kustom in the truest sense of the term, this Merc gets cues from a variety sources both literal and figurative. At the front of the car, a lightly massaged grille frames frenched headlights, a factory-spec bumper, and a '50 Ford hood that's been nosed and louvered. Behind that hood, factory-tint glass founds mirrored wipers and straight stainless frames beneath small vent visors and a modified, NOS windshield visor. Beneath that glass, '55 Pontiac profile trim perfectly complements factory rocker guards and factory fender skirts. At the edges of that trim, Buick-style portholes and correct Monterey badging add a little form while traditional door handles and classy mirrors instill a little function. And at the back of the car, dualed '95 Cadillac taillights frame a decked trunk and an Impala-branded fuel filler above a snazzy '55 Pontiac bumper. ENGINE Many Dearborn kustoms get by on traditional flathead power. And I do mean "get by" in the most literal sense of the phrase. While extremely cool, and chock full of character, flatheads aren't particularly known for earth-shaking performance when strapped to heavy '50s metal. Sourced directly from GM Performance Parts, this Merc's sprier personality comes courtesy of a 350 cubic inch ZZ4 crate engine that twists stout 10 to 1 compression into 355 horsepower and 405 lb./ft. of torque. The mean motor's energy mixture is supplied by a coated Holley carburetor, which is sandwiched between an Edelbrock Performer intake and polished, transverse air cleaner. That mixture travels in to aluminum L98 cylinder heads, which hang polished valve covers and polished breathers over stamped rocker arms and hypereutectic pistons. That valvetrain combusts thanks to a forged, internally-balanced crank, powdered connecting rods and a billet cam. Fire for that combustion comes courtesy of a modern HEI distributor and Autolite Professional Series plug wires. That fire is kept in check by a beefy radiator, which is mated to chrome flex hoses and a polished expansion tank. Traditional V-belts spin a rebuilt alternator opposite a modern AC compressor while spent gases are cycled through iron GM manifolds. And first-rate details include: an Optima battery, a small pressure gauge, a Wilwood proportioning valve and a Holley fuel regulator. DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION Every good street rod has a solid foundation. Flip this polished classic upside down and you'll find a roster of mechanical improvements that mix vintage looks with modern mobility. Behind the small block, a tough 700R4 4-speed features an adjustable lock-up converter. That gearbox drives a sturdy, highway friendly axle, which rides on traditional leaf springs and small lowering blocks. Opposite that axle, an independent front-half features power rack-and-pinion steering. Power front disc and rear drum brakes are a welcome addition and big performance upgrade. There's a true-dual exhaust system that mixes throaty Magnaflow mufflers with polished stainless tips. And everything rides on old school steelies, which spin 215/75R15 Dean Alpha 365 whitewalls around what appear to be '50s Dodge hubcaps. INTERIOR Like its solid mechanicals and striking body, this Monterey's interior is an eclectic mix of bests. A '59 Chevy dash hangs modern air conditioning, clear Dolphin telemetry and a crisp Sony CD player between a Guide traffic light viewer and 12-volt power outlets. In front of that dash, '66 Thunderbird seats feature power adjustment for the car's driver. Between those seats, a custom oil pan console tops premium carpet, which is protected by piped and color-keyed floor mats. That dash, seat and carpet trifecta is cased in a tight headliner and classy factory door panels. In front of the driver, a modern tilt steering column bridges the gap between a '59 Impala wheel and digital gear selector. And behind the passengers, a fully finished trunk hides a small spare tire. OUR SALE INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTATION AND ACCESSORIESA trophy awarded to the car at a local cruise-in This striking Merc is a nicely finished classic that was built to be driven AND seen. It uses top-notch components from some of the best names in the business to create a unique kustom that mixes killer personality with awesome curb appeal. Some builds are dated and need to be modernized, while others are so thoroughly modern they'll be dated by next year. One of the best bets you can place is on a timeless creation like this impressive, all-steel Merc. It's a fully sorted masterpiece that was carefully planned and bolted together by someone who definitely knew their way around a garage. The parts list includes familiar items like a big block V8, a smooth shifting 4-speed, brilliant paint and a custom-stitched interior; but the execution of those items is what sets the car apart. If you've been searching for a super cool street rod that can be driven and shown with pride, this impressive kustom is the perfect solution! BODYWORK/TRIM Carving a mid-lux niche with grand proportions and classic good looks, the '40 Mercury has always been a highly desirable car. And not surprisingly, gearheads, customizers and 75 years' worth of fans have elevated it to one of hot rodding's greatest cultural icons. A chopped cruiser that benefitted from an extensive, 5-year restoration, this awesome coupe began its new life as a show stopping head turner back in 2012. That restoration, conducted by Sports Car Collision of McAdenville, North Carolina, saw the car's voluptuous body stripped all the way to bare metal. Once that metal was super solid and virtually flawless, shaved doors were complemented with a pancaked hood and power operated decklid. That thoroughly tweaked profile was sealed in a custom coat of pearl 2-stage. And today, this razor-sharp kustom is one sizzling classic that looks cooler than pretty much every car at any show its owner chooses to attend! The styling of Mercury's first generation Eight was fairly successful in differentiating the brand from its comparable Ford cousin; a virtue that continues to fuel to the car's timeless desirability. At the front of this clean custom, a polished grille rides between a nosed hood and frenched tri-bar headlights. Behind that hood, creased and stainless-trimmed glass rides between capped wipers and polished mirrors. Beneath that glass, filled fender seams ride between polished trim and color-keyed fender skirts. And at the back of those seams, a decked trunk rides between small, chrome-trimmed taillights. ENGINE Like it or not, sometimes it's good to break tradition. And breaking tradition is one thing that makes this Merc so impressive. Lift the car's domed hood and you'll find 454 cubic inches of big block muscle that mixes miles of power with mountains of torque! At the top of the fully detailed mill, a finned and polished air cleaner feeds a coated Holley 770 that's throttled by a quality Lokar linkage. The resulting energy mixture makes its way from a coated Weiand intake to cast iron Chevrolet heads. When those heads flood the cylinders, a Delco-Remy HEI distributor sequences fire through loomed Taylor plug wires. Resultant gases are jettisoned through ceramic-coated block hugger headers. Cooling is provided by a beefy Walker radiator, which rides behind a giant electric pusher fan. Charge comes courtesy of a polished alternator that, along with a coated AC compressor, spins behind aesthetically pleasing pulleys. And overall, the car's smooth engine compartment is exceptionally clean, featuring details like a chrome brake booster, MQQN Equipment breathers, proven Haywire wiring, and polished and finned valve covers. DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION Every good street rod has a solid foundation. Flip this channeled classic upside down and you'll find a roster of mechanical improvements that mix vintage looks with modern mobility. A tough 700R4 4-speed drives a sturdy Ford 9-inch, which pushes a fully boxed chassis. At the nose of that chassis, a Fat Man front-half centers power rack-and-pinion steering between pliable air bags. At the back of that chassis, a modern 4-bar setup utilizes two more air bags to increase grip and maintain ride height. Power front disc and rear drum brakes are a welcome addition and big performance upgrade. There's a free-flowing, true-dual exhaust system that makes good use of Flowmaster dual-chamber mufflers. And everything rides on red steelies, which spin 185/70R15 front, and 225/70R15 rear, BF Goodrich Silvertown Radial whitewalls around mind-bending covers. INTERIOR Installed by Car's Classic Interiors of Lincolnton, North Carolina, this coupe's stylish cockpit is a sea of plush Vanilla. A '48 Ford dash hangs VDO telemetry, Maxi Kooler air conditioning and MP3-compatible Sony Xplod audio between billet foot pedals, a tilt steering column and an old school "V8" branded wheel. In front of that dash, broad bench seats feature aviation-quality leather surfaces. At the sides of those seats, Juliano's power windows frame faux leather side panels, billet door pulls, polished door handles and Sony Xplod speakers. That dash, seat and panel trifecta is sandwiched between monochromatic carpet and a color-keyed headliner. And behind the cabin, a fully finished trunk provides ample storage space. OUR SALE INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTATION AND ACCESSORIESBuild receiptsComponent manualsA pair of wiper arms Truman-era Mercs have aged with more grace than most, wearing a design that's still capable of turning heads even in its basic factory form. The restorer's decision to take those basics and make proven, time-tested adjustments is a huge part of why this kustom works so well. With its massaged motor, smooth-shifting 4-speed, comfortable interior and vintage swagger, you'll never tire of finding this sled in your garage. Stop watching opportunity pass you by. This 1973 Mercury Cougar XR7 convertible gives you all of this with V8 power and a value price. The Cougar was built to be a Mustang in a dinner jacket, and this red exterior convertible, with a refined white convertible top, just seems to deliver on this sporty sophistication. This car has spent a life as a cherished driver, so you can see evidence of a nice restoration to the paint and the body to keep the panels super straight. Ford/Mercury people know the significance of the 1973 Cougar. The following year would switch platforms where the Cougar would grow in size, weight, and there was no convertible option. The Cougar was no longer the Mustang's upscale companion, which is why a final-year XR7 convertible has a forever-coveted place in vintage car crowds. Besides, there's just something exceptionally cool about cruising around in a Mercury where the full bright trim (from the waterfall grille to the stylized bumper/taillight combo) is complete and pristine. The XR7 package was the top of the line for the Cougar, so you can certainly expect this one to be loaded. It starts with the high back bucket seats that are as virginal white as the power folding roof. And you can drive with the top down much further into the warm seasons thanks to ice cold air conditioning. The original AM/FM radio is still in place, but it also has an iPod hookup so you can look retro while still listening to modern tunes. Those who have driven Mustangs from this era will find something familiar about the layout of this Cougar, except there's an added premium feel. For example, you still have the same sporty sloping center console and dashboard setup, but now there's more wood trim and a substantially larger gauge package with tachometer. Open the hood and you'll see an engine bay that looks factory-fresh. The first thing you'll notice is the big blue air cleaner on the Cleveland 351 V8 motor that still has its original-style tags. Often this would have been replaced with a chrome unit, but that wouldn't be right on the last of the cool Mercury cats. You might love the power and rumble this motor makes, but that's far from the whole story. This has a three-speed automatic transmission that connected to a Ford 9-inch rear end running a 2.75 ratio. So this one is set up for all-day highway cruising whenever you want. Add in power steering and front disc brakes, and this is the convertible you won't hesitate to drive any day of the week. This is a cool XR7 that fires right up, and is eager for a drive whenever you're ready. Best of all, you can pick up this sharp, valued vintage convertible today for less than the price of any new droptop. This 1970 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler tribute car has all the right features to grab attention on the outside and coddle you on the inside. And wait until we get to the engine! The Cyclone was Mercury's version of the Torino GT. That meant it shared some seriously large power, while having its own unique styling and Mercury's lower production numbers. Competing with the likes of the Buick GS and Plymouth GTX, the Cyclone had to look the part, and this is one mean muscle car. From the aggressive hood scoop and gunsight grille, to the semi-fastback profile with subtle fender flairs, it was built to intimidate. This car was restored less than four years ago to an exceptionally high standard. The bodywork is laser-straight, panel fit is outstanding, and the paint has a brilliant orange glow that looks hot to the touch. True to the "Spoiler" name, this tribute has aggressive spoilers in the front and rear. It even has the package-correct striping and exposed headlights. This one was built so well it won the Best of Show award from the Ford Club meet at the 2011 Charlotte Auto Fair. Inside, it's all about Mercury's blend of luxury and performance. The black vinyl seats are a must for any good muscle car, but these also have gray textured inserts that give it a much more upscale look and feel. The driver gets a Cyclone-specific three-spoke sports steering wheel. Plus, you have a B&M Quicksilver shifter to rest your arm or even bang your way through the automatic gears when you really want to takeoff from a stoplight. But this is more than just a driver's coupe. This is a big car with the space and seatbelts to seat five other people. So all your passengers get to enjoy the comfort of cold-blowing air conditioning, and modern tunes from the new AM/FM/CD player that was installed during restoration. A car this mean needs a monster motor, and you won't be disappointed when you pop the hood. It's Ford's big-block 429 cubic-inch V8 engine that's famous for eating up everything on the streets. While the rest of the car has been restored a few years ago, this powerplant had its entire top end rebuilt just a few weeks ago. That's why everything looks so fresh and pristine in the engine bay, including the valve covers, tubes, wires, Edelbrock chrome air cleaner, four-pass radiator, and MSD Blaster coil. With all these upgrades, the dual exhaust has a heightened rumble that will scare lesser cars even at idle. Just in case that sound wasn't enough, this Mercury has no trouble getting its power to the ground thanks to Ford's stout C6 three-speed automatic transmission, linked to their nine-inch rear end. But there's more to this car's story. The rear end ratio is a highway-friendly 3.55. Combine that with the power steering, power brakes (discs up front), and modern BF Goodrich T/A Radial tires, and this is the kind of muscle car you won't mind taking on road trips. Rare, beautiful, and impressive, this Mercury Cyclone Spoiler packs an upscale punch that will make Ford fans smile everywhere it goes. These haven't lasted in our showroom in the past, and we dont expect this one to either, call now!! 1970 Mercury Cyclone Tribute for Sale 1970 Mercury Cyclone Tribute for Sale Stock # 3078-CHA Charlotte Showroom 5400 West WT Harris Blvd Charlotte, NC 28269 Local/International: (704) 598-2130 Toll-Free: (866) 542-8392 Hours: Tues - Fri: 9AM - 6PM EST Sat: 9AM - 5PM EST Email: [email protected] Atlanta Showroom 213 Thornton Rd Lithia Springs, GA 30122 Local/International: (678) 279-1609 Toll-Free: (877) 367-1835 Hours: Tues - Fri: 9AM - 6PM EST Sat: 9AM - 5PM EST Email: [email protected] Dallas/Fort Worth Showroom 5400 Sandshell Dr Fort Worth, TX 76137 Local/International: (817) 764-8000 Toll-Free: (855) 877-2707 Hours: Tues - Fri: 9AM - 6PM CST Sat: 9AM - 5PM CST Email: [email protected] TERMS OF SALE 1. This is a big, beautiful drop top that came loaded in the 1970s, which means it's a time machine that's still relevant today. The Cougar was built to be a Mustang in a dinner jacket, and 1973 was the last year Mercury fulfilled that promise. By the next year it would grow in size, weight, and there was no convertible option. So the Gold Glamour paint on this one almost seems like a tribute to the last of the great Mercury cats. It is amazing how everything still looks so good on this car from its 40+ year of remaining virtually unmolested. The chrome is complete and keeps its mirror shine. It's hard to find where a wayward stone has damaged the lenses or trim. The paint still sparkles in the sunlight, while it does show some minimal signs of its age, we think you'll want to leave it just as it is. It is that nice. In the same way a modern custom or original patina vehicle attracts a crowd today, people at car shows will be asking you about this convertible's story because its paint tells you how absolutely original this Cougar really is. XR7 was the top of the line for the Cougar, so you can certainly expect this one to be loaded. It starts with the high back leather bucket seats that are perfect for all-day cruising. Plus, there is power everything - power seats, power windows, power steering, power convertible top, etc. There's even provisions for air conditioning. The original AM/FM radio is still in place, so you can look retro while still listening to modern tunes. Those who have driven Mustangs from this era will find something familiar about the layout of this Cougar, except there's an added premium feel. For example, you still have the same sporty sloping center console and dashboard setup, but now there's more wood trim and a substantially larger gauge package. The original feel is capped off with an interior-matching convertible boot-lid that is a handsome cover when you decide to take down the white vinyl top and let in some sunshine. Open the hood, and you get a true lesson in survivor cars. Often the big blue air cleaner on the Cleveland 351 V8 motor would have been replaced with a chrome unit, but that wouldn't be right for this car. The numbers-matching engine stays true to its first day out of the Dearborn factory. When you pop the hood at a car show, you'll be surprised how many people will want to take a picture of the original stickers all around this engine bay. But that's only if you ever decide to stop driving this convertible. Not only does the motor fire right up and idle smoothly, but this also comes with a three-speed automatic transmission, power steering, and power brakes with discs up front. So you know this Cougar is the perfect vintage car to take on the kind of aimless wandering drives that will have you crossing state lines. This XR7 is a survivor, and a driver. There is evidence of a lot of care that went into keep this car originally pristine. The next owner is even positioned to be the proper custodian of this history by also receiving everything from the original owner's manual, to a spare convertible top. Whether it's the fault of James Dean, Sam Barris or just stellar design, 49-51 Mercurys seem gifted with universal appeal that few classics possess. This first class Mercury Kustom is the recipient of a complete, frame-off restoration that combines epic paint with excellent design, a potent Chevy big block and a clean custom interior. With fully sorted mechanicals, the car easily navigates the line between awesome weekend warrior and show-stopping crowd pleaser. And if you're the kind of buyer who's searching for a stunning, old school masterpiece that features a roster of top-notch equipment, no hot rod offers more style for less money! BODYWORK/TRIM Officially baptized in to the Kustom world just a few years back, this slick sled has been carefully finessed and expertly finished to the absolute highest standards. The smooth surfaces that make up the car's sinister profile are entirely comprised of clean fiberglass that's been chopped, channeled and laboriously block-sanded. That lightweight shell is dressed in 10 coats of Porsche Basalt Metallic base that's been splashed with a hint of pearl, sealed in thick clear and lovingly buffed to a trophy-winning shine. And today, this Merc rolls as one excellent-looking custom that's completely devoid of filler, questionable seams, strange bulges or anything else that might demerit its otherwise superior construction. The styling of Mercury's second generation Eight was successful in both ending the monotony of warmed-over pre-war designs and differentiating the brand from its comparable Ford cousin: a trick that spelled BIG sales success. Those newfound sales made the car immensely popular with customizers, and in 1949 the first lead sled, built by Sam Barris, pioneered what would become hot rodding's definitive '50s custom. At the front of this clean sedan, a color-keyed DeSoto grille rides between a nosed hood, frenched tri-bar headlights and small LED parking lamps. Behind that hood, tinted and creased glass rides inside a smoothed cowl, a small mirror and shaved, electronically actuated doors. Beneath that glass, a simple, monochromatic profile showcases the car's classic Mercury lines. And at the back of that profile, a decked, electronically actuated trunk rides between small LED taillights. ENGINE Like it or not, sometimes it's good to break tradition. And breaking tradition is one thing that makes this Merc so impressive. Lift the car's domed hood and you'll find 454 cubic inches of big block muscle that, thanks to a sweet set of polished valve covers, does a great impression of Chevy's 502 cubic inch monster motor. At the top of the fully detailed mill, a polished, open-element air cleaner feeds a coated, 750cfm Edelbrock that's plumbed with braided fluid lines and a polished, canister-style filter. The resulting energy mixture makes its way from an Edelbrock Performer 2.0 intake to cast iron Chevrolet heads. When those heads flood the cylinders, a familiar points distributor sequences fire between a chrome-capped coil and loomed Taylor Thundervolt wires. Resultant gases are jettisoned through powder-coated, long-tube headers. The orange block's cooling is provided by a custom aluminum radiator that's fitted with chrome flex tubes, two SPAL puller fans and a sleek, fiberglass shroud. Charge comes courtesy of a polished Powermaster alternator that, along with a polished AC compressor and aluminum water pump, spins on an aesthetically pleasing March pulley system. And overall, the smooth, body-matched engine compartment is exceptionally clean, featuring details such as polished breathers, polished fluid tanks, polished dipsticks and a proven Wilwood master cylinder. DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION Take a look under this incredible custom and you'll find a bent-tube Art Morrison skeleton that's been augmented with a series of excellent upgrades. Opposite the car's channeled and tubbed floors, a RideTech Shockwave suspension utilizes modern power rack-and-pinion steering to combine pleasant road manners with a killer stance. At the center of that suspension, a 2,500 RPM stall converter jerks a beefy 700R4 4-speed, which spins a familiar Ford 9-inch around 3.55 gears. At the sides of that awesome driveline, the aforementioned headers roll spent gases through large stainless pipes and throaty Magnaflow mufflers. At the corners of that exhaust, bright red calipers and 11-inch discs provide solid, predictable stops. And, on the outside of those discs, 20-inch DUBs spin 255/35 Mickey Thompson Street Comps in front of 275/40 Mickey Thompson Street Comps. INTERIOR Like its drivetrain and body, the car's supple interior is a completely custom creation that highlights technology while honoring heritage. 2-tone ultraleather seats, which are both soft and supportive, ride on clean gray carpet that's stretched between handsome aluminum sills. In front of those seats, a '49 Merc dash anchors Classic Instruments All American telemetry beside custom lettering. At the base of that dash, a custom console centers remote-controlled Pioneer audio and lighted Vintage Air twist knobs above small accessory switches and a classy Lokar shifter. Opposite that console, flamed side panels hang hidden courtesy lamps and modernist armrests in front of power-operated windows. Above those panels, a billet mirror leads a stitched headliner. In front of the driver, a polished and half-wrapped steering wheel laps a tilting column, a billet accelerator pedal and a cool, Mercury-branded brake pedal. And behind the blue-lit cockpit, a fully finished trunk reflects cool Mercury branding in a small, polished fuel filler. OUR SALE INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTATION AND ACCESSORIESA small book of build photosA copy of the car's shout out in the June, 2014 edition of Street Scene MagazineThree trophies This razor-sharp sled is one of the coolest cruisers on the planet! Sure, this drop-top's been to shows and proven its place among the best antiques in the country. But as it sits, the car, with its proven flathead, tough 3-speed and Dearborn steel body, is undoubtedly built to cruise and enjoy. So, if you've been shopping for a cool old hot rod to parade up and down Main Street, it looks like you've found your next car! BODYWORK/TRIM The beneficiary of a detailed, frame-off restoration, this slick sled was completely disassembled, carefully finessed and expertly rebuilt to the absolute highest standards. As you can tell from our photos, the car retains all of its original proportions, resulting in a balanced profile that's exclusive to unaltered Dearborn steel. Take a close look at that profile and you'll find buttery surfaces that have maintained a solid faade for close to 70 years. That faade creates a super clean fuselage that's been laboriously block-sanded and covered in a rich coat of Jet Black paint. That glossy pigment stays vibrant thanks to a first class finish that's been carefully buffed to a crowd-pleasing shine. And today, this Mercury rolls as one excellent classic with no filler, no bulges, no questionable seams and nothing that would otherwise demerit its exhaustive rebirth. ENGINE If Henry Ford perfected one aspect of his automobiles, it was the Ford V8. Introduced in 1932 as a durable, torque-rich competitor to more expensive and labor-intensive 8-cylinders, the 'flatty' has established an unmatched reputation as the go-to mill for classic and custom car enthusiasts. And, in keeping with tradition, this stellar Merc is powered by a correct, 239 cubic inch 69M block. Spinning smooth 6.75 to 1 compression into 100 horsepower and 180 lb./ft. of torque, the throaty engine growls with the help of a roster of vintage parts. Air enters through a Satin Black oil bath cleaner and, juiced by a small Ford 59 carburetor, exits through correct, cast iron exhaust manifolds. Ford-branded belts turn a traditional generator while a beefy radiator cycles water through Ford-branded hoses and tight screw clamps. Aesthetically, the mill, which perches a Satin Black oil canister on 24-stud heads, has been painted a familiar blue hue. Cool details, like a glass fuel bowl, a 6-volt Ford battery, an Autolite voltage regulator and a Dura Hydro Lectic convertible top motor, add enough shine to sit at the show. And overall, this classic's body-matched engine bay is a charming and 100% functional step back in to a much simpler, and some would say better, period of American automotive history. DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION Take a look under this solid cruiser and you'll find a fully sorted chassis that, despite its road-ready mechanicals, is exceptionally clean and displays very few signs of wear. While its body was off and being refinished, this Mercury's factory bones were treated to an equally comprehensive makeover, and, given their railroad trestle level of engineering, are probably one of the main reasons the sled rides so smoothly. Satin Black floors make a suitable backdrop for a Satin Black frame and factory-accurate suspension. A correct, 3-speed manual transmission sends power to a familiar Ford axle. In front of that drivetrain, a transverse leaf spring remains just as it looked back in 1946. And the same holds true behind that drivetrain, where a second transverse leaf and the aforementioned pumpkin add integrity and grip. 4-wheel drum brakes are a welcome addition and big performance upgrade. There's a quiet, single-pipe exhaust system. And everything rides on pinstriped wheels, which spin fresh 6.70-15 B.F. Goodrich Silvertown whitewalls around slim trim rings and Mercury-branded center caps. INTERIOR Inside this exclusive Merc, a tasteful red interior appears much more upscale than its age would suggest. Broad leather seats, which are both soft and supportive, ride on durable rubber flooring that's backed by clean carpet. In front of those seats, a classy, "MERCURY" branded dash anchors clear gauges in a stylish mix of wood and chrome trim. At the sides of that dash, coved door panels hang correct chrome handles over small armrests. In front of the driver, an artful Mercury steering wheel spins a full horn ring around a long chrome shifter. And behind the passenger's, a fully restored trunk features a full-size spare tire. Cool and classic, this '46 Mercury Eight is a vision in post-war authenticity. You really can't ask for a more impressive blend of old school style and solid driving characteristics. And you certainly can't build this nice of a ride for the time or money it takes to drive out of our RK Motors Charlotte showroom. Ready to step up to something different? With a subtle color combination, an appealing black interior, and a strong V8 drivetrain, it's a hobby car you can enjoy without guilt. The idea of the small car isn't a new one, and even upscale Mercury was getting in on the act with the Comet. It offers styling cues taken from the full-sized machines sitting next to it in the showroom, but thanks to compact proportions, it was easy to drive and remarkably quick when equipped with a V8 engine. This one shows good straight bodywork thanks to a lifetime in the south, and while the color is subtle, this one gets all its attention simply by being unusual. Dramatically carved sheetmetal topped by tiny fins that were the '50s last gasp give it a lot of visual interest, and are actually helped by the subtle paint. Chrome and trim are quite good, and even on this budget classic Comet, there's quite a bit of it, including the big bumpers and ornate grille up front. The stainless strip running the length of the body and two trios of taillight lenses give the Comet a lot of visual pizzazz that make it look more expensive. The attractive black interior is another way in which the Comet looks like it should cost way more than it does. One look at the tasteful black vinyl with its square stitching instantly reminds you of the other more expensive cars in the Mercury lineup, and that's completely on purpose. Matching door panels are remarkably stylish for a basic car, with about only the armrest showing age after nearly 50 years of elbows resting on it. The instrument panel is a handsome and functional design that includes wood appliques for warmth and to match the woodgrained steering wheel. The 3-speed manual transmission with column shift makes the Caliente feel quick around town and feels more involving for the driver. Tidy carpets, a taut headliner, and an accessory AM/FM radio under the dash, it certainly doesn't feel like Mercury's lowest-priced car that year. Even the trunk is nicely finished and comes complete with a full-sized spare and jack assembly. Ford's trusty 302 cubic inch V8 fits neatly with the Comet's economy-based mission. It's a 1968 engine, but thanks to the interchangeability of the small block engines, it slots right in without modifications. It transforms the lightweight Mercury and you'll recall that the 1965 Mustang was based on this same platform. Ford Blue on the engine itself makes the machinery stand out against the satin black engine bay, and while it's not yet detailed for show, it does have a factory look that helps it blend with the engine bay. It starts easily and has a bit of a muscular voice thanks to a brand new exhaust system. With highway-friendly gears out back, the stout V8 pulls the car around with aplomb and might even make it a bit of a sleeper. Original steel wheels with hubcaps and 195/75/14 whitewall radials certainly help with that impression. Unusual yet eminently practical for today's times, this Comet is a great entry-level hobby car that won't cost you much now or down the road. [email protected] 5527 Lakeview Road, Charlotte, NC, 28269, US 1950 Mercury Coupe Frame Off Built Led Sled 468 Dart V8 700R4 Vintage Air Year: 1950 Type of vehicle title: Clear Primary color: Burgundy Mileage: 2581 Transmission type: 4 Speed Automatic Engine: 468 V8 Interior color: Tan Vehicle info There's nothing like assuming the helm of a lights-out lead sled. Whether it's the fault of James Dean, Sam Barris or just stellar design, 49-51 Mercurys seem gifted with universal appeal that few classics possess. This first class Mercury Kustom is the recipient of a complete, frame-off restoration that combines excellent paint with epic metalwork, a potent Chevy big block and a clean custom interior. With fully-sorted mechanicals, the car easily navigates the line between awesome weekend warrior and show-stopping crowd pleaser. And if you're the kind of buyer who's searching for a stunning, all-steel masterpiece that features a roster of top notch equipment, no hot rod offers more style for less money! Officially baptized in to the Kustom world a little over thirty years ago, this slick sled was carefully finessed and expertly freshened to the absolute highest standards in the summer of 2011. At that point in its life, the car was a tired, small block resto-mod that had, fortunately, found its way to well-known car enthusiast Ron Meis. Meis began by working the body's contoured panels into buttery planes that'll maintain a solid faade for years to come. Those smooth surfaces make for a super clean profile that's been laboriously block-sanded and covered in a stunning coat of Corvette burgundy. That glossy paint stays vibrant thanks to a tough layer of clearcoat, which was thoroughly dried and carefully buffed to a trophy-winning shine. And today, the car sits as one excellent looking custom with no filler, no questionable seams, no bulges, and nothing else that would be any kind of demerit to its otherwise superior restoration. At the front of this clean coupe, a short grille hangs clear parking lamps between frenched headlights, a wraparound bumper and a nosed hood. Behind that hood, tinted, chrome-trimmed glass rides inside stainless wipers, traditional spotlights and a professionally chopped roof. At the sides of that roof, a shaved profile floats requisite fender skirts between small mirrors and faux side pipes. And behind those skirts, a second wraparound bumper reflects a shaved decklid and pure Mercury tail lights. Like it or not, sometimes it's good to break tradition. And breaking tradition is one thing that makes this Merc so impressive. Lift the car's domed hood and you'll find 468 cubic inches of big block Chevrolet muscle that, thanks to A&A Restoration in Rapid City, South Dakota, creates roughly 600 horsepower! At the top of that monster mill, air flows from a K&N X-Stream-style filter element in to a big Holley 4-barrel that's piped with braided fluid lines and a simple Holley pressure gauge. The resulting air/fuel mixture makes its way from a Weiand aluminum intake to Dart Pro1 heads that are topped with chrome, "CHEVROLET" branded valve covers. When those heads flood the cylinders, a quality MSD distributor sequences fire between an MSD Blaster 2 coil and tube-loomed Taylor plug wires. Resultant gases are jettisoned through ceramic-coated Sanderson block hugger headers. The black block's cooling is provided by a beefy radiator that's fitted with a shrouded Cooling Components puller fan. Charging comes courtesy of a polished alternator that, along with a polished AC compressor, spins on an aesthetically pleasing Zoops pulley system. And overall, the smooth, body-matched engine compartment is exceptionally clean, featuring details such as polished breathers, a polished overflow tank, polished water tubes and a prominent MQQN Equipment temperature gauge. Take a look under this all-steel custom and you'll find a traditional Ford skeleton that's been augmented with a series of excellent upgrades. At the front of that skeleton, a nice mix of Fat Man and Heidts suspension components makes good use of power rack-and-pinion steering. At the back of that skeleton, simple traction bars and proven lowering blocks combine strength with stance. At the center of that chassis, a line locking 700R4 4-speed spins a familiar Ford 9-inch around 3.70 gears and Moser 31-spline axles. At the sides of that awesome driveline, the aforementioned headers roll spent gases through large stainless pipes and throaty Flowmaster mufflers. At the corners of that exhaust system, power disc brakes provide solid, predictable stops. On the outside of those discs, painted and stainless-capped steelies spin 215/75R15 Coker Classic wide whitewalls. Naturally, items like fresh hoses, clean lines and a dual-reservoir master cylinder round out a sound cast of supporting ancillaries. And, in case you like to play with pressure, most of the car's original air ride system is present and fully wired. Like its engine, the car's supple leather interior was fitted during its 2011 freshening. Modern, power seats, which are both soft and supportive, ride on clean tan carpet that's protected by piped and color-keyed floor mats. In front of those seats, a tan dash anchors rebuilt gauges above hardware for modern climate control. At the base of that dash, a custom console centers an MP3-compatible VBA head unit and Vintage Air twist knobs between small courtesy lamps and VBA speakers. Opposite that console, custom side panels hang subtle trim and broad armrests between seamless quarter speakers and billet door hardware. Above those panels, a custom headliner flows through a billet Center High Mount Stop Lamp to an intricately detailed package tray. In front of the driver, an Ididit tilt steering column spins a Lecarra-branded wheel around a stylish billet shifter. And behind the passengers, a fully finished trunk features ample room for luggage. The sale of this exclusive Merc includes restoration receipts and component manuals. This razor-sharp sled is one of the coolest cruisers on the planet! And at only $79,900, it isn't just a fully restored classic that's attainable for a fraction of its build cost; it's a unique hot rod that sets itself apart from a virtual sea of chopped, diced, smothered and covered street rods. If you're ready to own the very definition of American cool, don't miss out on this incredible Mercury Kustom! To do so, contact Donald Bernard at (704)596-5211 or (781)773-4648. Donald's email address is: [email protected]. For those of you who need to fly in, we can provide transportation to and from Charlotte Douglas International Airport. We can also recommend accommodations within a short distance of our facility. RK Motors takes pride in delivering road-ready cars to our customers. That's why every car we sell comes with the assurance of our Seal of Approval process - a comprehensive inspection performed by our sister company, the RKM Performance Center. From major visual defects to basic functionality issues, our Seal of Approval checklist covers the basics so you can feel confident about your purchase. For international buyers, note that we've shipped cars to collectors and classic car fans world-wide for years. We can provide you with a firm quote for transport to any shipping port in the world in a sealed container and handle the process for you from start to finish. Our domestic and international ground transport solutions are enclosed only. If you wish to use an open carrier, you will need to arrange that. Our Transportation Manager, Gregory Smith, stands ready to help you with your transport & shipping needs. Gregory can be reached at: [email protected]. A common question we receive is: "do you accept trades"? We do accept trades, but will only consider #1 or #2 condition vehicles. If you would like us to review a trade, please send recent, high resolution pictures of the entire car, including the underside. Also send a detailed description which includes all specifications, facts, figures, history and documentation present with the car. Lastly, give us a clear idea of what you are seeking in trade value. If you are a MyClassicGarage user, you can send us an Evaluation file for review. Our MCG virtual garage name is: RK Motors Charlotte. Email information and pictures on your trade directly to Donald Berard. Donald's email address is: [email protected].
