Detailed item infoModel OverviewMercedes-Benz is in the process of upgrading and improving its engine lineup, and the S-Class is a perfect example of the direction the company is going. It offers two eco-friendly engines -- a diesel and a hybrid -- two V8s and two V12s. The new kid on the block is the S350 BlueTEC turbodiesel, a 3.0L V6 that makes 241 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque. The S400 hybrid introduced in 2010 continues with a mild hybrid using a 3.5-liter V6 with 275 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque and a mild hybrid system to assist the gasoline engine for 30 percent better fuel economy than the S550.The S550 motors on with no changes to its V8 engine, which makes 382 hp and 391 lb-ft of torque. The V12-powered S600 also has few changes to its powerplant, which makes 510 hp and 612 lb-ft of torque. At the top end, the S63 AMG gets an all-new 5.5-liter V8 with 536 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque, plus stop-start technology and a 7-speed AMG transmission to keep fuel use relatively reasonable. The S65 AMG continues to utilize its V12 engine, which this year makes 17 more horsepower for a total of 621 hp, plus its 738 lb-ft of torque.Across the board, the S-Class gets some new technology upgrades. Some are safety-oriented, such as Active Lane Keeping Assist and Active Blind Spot Assist, both of which can trigger automatic brake intervention. Attention Assist detects drowsy drivers and is standard on all but the hybrid, and the standard Adaptive High Beam Assist monitors approaching headlights and dims its own to avoid blinding oncoming drivers. Some of the new technology is less about safety and more about creature comforts, like the available Splitview screen, which allows the driver and passenger to watch different things, like a navigation system on the left and a movie on the right. A salvage title is issued to indicate a vehicle that had damage and had been purchased from the insurance company. Vehicles are generally sold to salvage yards or rebuilders by the insurance companies. Some are the result of accidents, flooding or stolen recovery. When a vehicle with a salvage title has been repaired or rebuilt, it can be titled and registered for road use again. The vehicle must first pass an inspection by a specially-trained law enforcement officer. After the inspection, a new title is issued with the legend “REBUILT SALVAGE.” This legend alerts future owners the vehicle was once a salvage title. A license plate can be issued when the "rebuilt" title application is processed. Ironically, only our cars get inspected. Under Michigan law, no roadworthiness test is necessary other than salvage inspections. This means that only our cars are inspected. Clean title cars, whether sold on E-Bay or otherwise, have not been inspected.I thought salvage title cars are “totaled”? “Totaled” means an economic total loss. This doesn’t usually have much to do with the extent of the damage. Regardless of mileage, the older the car is the easier it would be for an insurance company to write them off. The less expensive the car is the lighter the damage would have to be for an insurance company to write it off rather than repair it. The salvage industry is huge in this country. We have access to thousands of cars a week through salvage auctions. The majority of those cars are, indeed, not worth repairing. But a lot of these cars have minor damage or none at all. We pick and choose cars that have light damage. We never buy anything with severe damage. If nothing else, it would not be economical for us.How common are Rebuilt Salvage Vehicles? The fact is that nearly all retail dealers have body shops on site. The vast majority of used cars get bodywork. The difference is that we disclose all of our repairs. Most dealers do not. They are what Mercedes-Benz calls Drive-Dynamic Multi-contour Seats -- computerized seats that "anticipate" how the bodies of the driver and front-seat passenger will shift in turns and other driving maneuvers. If you are making a sharp right-hand turn, for example, the contour of the driver's seat automatically changes, bolstering and hugging the right side of your torso, thus mitigating the shift of your body's weight. The idea is to keep you firmly planted in the seat. It's disconcerting at first. But you get accustomed to it. You start loving it. You start hunting for curves. Both front and back leather-covered power seats offer both heating and ventilation. But the fancy seats are just the tip of the iceberg. Let's talk about two high-tech features. Distronic Plus adaptive cruise control with Brake Assist Plus is a long-winded name for a safety system that comes very close to making this a drives-by-itself machine. With the technology, you can set your speed (just like normal cruise control) and set your comfort distance for the car ahead of you. Then, on the highway, it'll react to nearby traffic, slowing the car when the car in front slows and accelerating back to speed when the lane is clear. The German automaker said its tests show this technology reduces rear-end collisions by 75 percent. The other head-turner is the S600's infrared night-view assist.
