2008MERCEDES-BENZGL320 CDI 4MATICALL WHEEL DRIVE ULTRA QUIET V6 TURBO DIESEL There are truly no disappointments with this suv. It is such a pleasure to drive with the Airmatic suspension its like riding on air on the highway and in town. Since this is a V6 engine it gets good mileage especially with the Diesel, with the engine being a turbo charged engine it has loads of power. There are Fog lights front and rear front to help you see better at night and rear so others can see you. The tires are new Continental's and they also help the ride. Inside and outside this suv I can find no issues to tell you about. It has every option available and still runs and rides and drives like it was new. It has just been serviced and will take you anywhere to want it to on or off road. We have a local Mercedes dealer thats about 20 minutes away and if you are interested in this suv you are welcome to make an appointment for inspection for your piece of mind and we will gladly take it to them for you, we do ask that you pay ahead of time and make the appointment. They seem like the ideal powerplants for large and heavy vehicles such as the SUVs that Americans crave when fuel prices are reasonable. A favorite of ours in this category is the Mercedes GL, so when a diesel V-6 was added to the lineup with the 2008 models, we decided to see how it would work in the U.S.The GL320 CDI, as the diesel is designated, was the least expensive model in the GL line, with a base price of $53,775 when it was delivered in August 2007. At that price it comes equipped nicely, but we also specified several options to make it even more comfortable. The Premium 1 package ($6400) added a rearview-backup camera, parking sensors, a glass sunroof, a navigation system, satellite radio coupled to a better sound system, and a power passenger seat, steering column, and liftgate.We also selected the rear-seat entertainment package ($2670) with dual second-row screens to pacify children on long trips and the Keyless Go package ($1110) to relieve us of the burden of having to fish for the car’s key fob in order to open the GL’s doors and start its engine. The Heating package ($895) let us warm the steering wheel and the rear seats (front-seat heaters are standard). “Barolo” paint added $710. We also ordered the $510 Towing package, along with a $510 voice control to make it easier to program the nav system, and finally, a $375 iPod-integration package. It came to $66,955—far from cheap but within the range of competitive large luxo SUVs.Curious about this car’s key feature, the crew here quickly found the diesel engine to be very satisfying. Overall, we averaged 22 mpg with the GL, which is terrific for a vehicle that’s about the same size and heft as a Cadillac Escalade. It didn’t much matter whether we drove the GL320 in town or on the highway, the mileage stayed consistently in the low 20s, rising to the mid-20s if we kept our highway speed below 75 mph.When the GL first arrived, we were concerned that finding the requisite ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel might be a problem, but it turned out to be everywhere. It was even in supply at one particular gas station in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where the diesel pumps did not carry the ULS label and the humanoids at the gas stations had never heard of the stuff.The characteristic diesel rattle and smoky exhaust are minimal in the GL. At startup in the morning—which never required a long glow-plug wait—we noticed that the oil-burning V-6 is a little louder than a gasoline engine, especially if you’re in an enclosed garage. But once under way, the rattle quickly fades. The objective test results of this Âdiesel SUV are not likely to impress anyone—especially owners of a 403-hp Escalade—with its 8.6-second 0-to-60 time and its 16.5-second quarter-mile slog (both times deteriorated slightly in tests after 40,000 miles). But on the road, we were universally satisfied with the GL’s pickup. Though there is a slight amount of turbo lag when starting from rest, after this machine has gone 10 feet, it accelerates smoothly up to its 130-mph top speed. And there’s plenty of thrust for passing on back roads, even with a heavy load onboard.There were no complaints about the GL’s road manners, either. Although nothing could disguise the big SUV’s 200-inch length and 5555-pound curb weight, we all liked its precise and responsive steering and its comfortable and well-controlled ride. A firmer brake pedal, however, would have been appreciated by most of us.As large as it is, we expected to be able to pack plenty of things into the GL, and we weren’t disappointed. The front seats are roomy and very comfortable, and the second-row seating is also good, but the third row is a little tight on kneeroom. That said, the last row will accommodate adults on a short haul.Of course, if all three rows are filled with people, there’s not much room left for luggage. However, that third row of seating folds perfectly flat with the flick of an electric switch. Presto! Luggage room is plentiful.If its overall package is not quite as efficient as a minivan’s, the GL is at least as efficient as competitive SUVs. And what it does offer is sure-footed four-wheel drive in slippery conditions. When winter arrived, we installed four Bridgestone Blizzak DM-Z3 snow tires, which inspired confidence even in blizzard conditions.As are most modern high-end vehicles, the GL320 CDI was equipped with a host of electronic conveniences, many of which could serve as challenging intelligence tests. Prominent among these was the GL’s COMAND system, which is Mercedes’ first-generation version of a combined navigation system and LCD-based electronic controller. No one found this system intuitive to use, and the tiny little knob that controls it requires the dexterity of a pediatric surgeon. The optional voice-control system didn’t help—it misunderstood at least half of our spoken commands.The GL’s optional iPod hookup worked well but could only be switched from track to track using controls on the steering wheel. With all of the buttons and soft keys incorporated in the COMAND system, it seems that Mercedes could have used them to provide iPod controls for the GL’s front passenger.Other picky passengers complained about the lack of wireless headphones for the onboard DVD system, though kids had no problems with the included wired headphones. The Sirius satellite radio also helped the miles fly by on transcontinental jaunts. Other than a free initial service anytime between the first 1000 and 3000 miles, the schedule of maintenance began at 10,000 miles and thereafter at every 10K. At that first scheduled visit, the dealer replaced nine quarts of synthetic oil ($53) and the oil filter ($30), performed various inspections, and handed us a bill for $262. The right-side power mirror, which had stopped working, was fixed under warranty.We made a dealer stop at 17,738 miles, after several drivers reported that the Keyless Go system was no longer unlocking the driver’s door with the touch of the handle. The dealer diagnosed a failed sensor in the door and ordered a spare from Germany.At the 20,000-mile service, that sensor was replaced (under warranty) along with all three wiper blades ($96). We got an oil change, a more rigorous round of inspections, and a bill for $480.Soon thereafter, our luxury diesel SUV went back to the dealer because the power-operated tailgate wouldn’t close all the way and a number of noises in the luggage area were becoming bothersome. Both problems were fixed under warranty.A third routine service at 30,897 cost $263. The final stop came at 41,116 miles and was a whopping $1244, which included the more rigorous inspections we’d experienced at the 20K mark, along with replacing the fuel filter ($105) and the air filter ($151) and changing the transmission fluid and filter ($220).Other than the failed door sensor and the problem with the power tailgate, the GL had only one other glitch. It mysteriously neglected to start toward the end of its time with us. The engine cranked but wouldn’t fire in several attempts over the course of an hour. But with a tow truck on its way, the GL suddenly started and never repeated this curious behavior.All told, service was $2115—about 10 times the $210 our long-term Cadillac Escalade [November 2007] cost us. The GL also went through $1084 of tires and wipers in its 40,000 miles, whereas the Cadillac went the distance on the originals.On the other hand, the Mercedes burned 1818 gallons of diesel fuel at a cost of $7218, while the Escalade, at today’s prices, would have set us back more than $14,000 for gasoline. While the Caddy was burdened by a lot more towing than the GL, the Mercedes diesel scores a significant savings.Arriving at the bottom line, this is a terrific luxury SUV that delivers the features, comfort, space, and inclement-weather capability that big-SUV buyers seek.
