It's difficult to find an original elegant color with an interior that matches so well and finished with a sharp contrasting Navy Blue soft top. The MB-TEX parchment interior shows no rips or tears and shows in very presentable condition. Paint is largely original with some respray done with good quality craftsmanship. Body panels appear to be straight. There are no paint or rust bubbles anywhere. There is no rust on this vehicle including the undercarriage that's clean and dry. Lots of preventative and regular maintenance work has been done on the vehicle in last 5 years including timing chain, tensioner, rails, plugs, cap, rotor, AC, servo replacement and the list goes on. Service records available. Recently had the AC serviced and fully recharged. AC Conversion has already been changed to 134 and it really blows strong and ICE COLD, something you do not find often on 450's of this age. Motor runs strong and shifts smooth through all gears. The previous 3 owners took care of the vehicle and it shows as it was garaged and covered. The original owner had it for the majority of time and passed it down to his daughter. This is a rare low mile original time capsule 450 SL with just 39,770 original miles on the odometer. It comes with the original factory hard and soft top. In excellent high quality condition, the vehicle has virtually been in the same owner's hands since newly purchased in May of 1979.Always garaged and kept out of weather and sun the car is beautiful and shows in excellent condition. The paint is largely original with proper depth thickness. There does not appear to be any indication of accidents or bondo as the body panels all show factory even gaps and straight even lines. There are a few minor imperfections to be expected on a vehicle of this age (such as a minor scratch here and there). All the glass, rubber, brightwork and trim are in very nice preserved condition. There is absolutely NO RUST anywhere on the vehicle. It drives like Mercedes intended with a very tight suspension, no play in the steering and tracks incredibly smooth and straight down the road. This is not your ordinary loose and shaky 450SL with excess miles and typical vibrations you'd hear on a high mileage car. You don't get the usual outside air blowing in through the window rubber seals and cracks. The transmission shifts accurately and smooth through the gears. The motor starts right up and idles steady. It drives with full power top to bottom on this strong-young motor. New plugs and wires were recently installed. Additionally the AC/Heat servo was just replaced. The 14 inch factory alloy non-chrome wheels do not have curb rash or damage.The blue leather interior is in stunning like new original condition with no sagging on the seats, separation of seams or leather fade. Truly, it resembles a time capsule it is so nice. The carpet shows very nice, wood is in beautiful condition and the dashboard is all original free of cracks, fading or damage. The instrument cluster gauges all work as they should. The needles still have their orange/red color. All power windows, electric switches and lights are in working order. It comes with the original factory Becker AM/FM radio that still operates. The trunk has the original spare and tool roll kit. The soft top is original and Navy Blue in color - without any cracks, rips, tears or foggy/dirty windows. It is amazing how well preserved the original soft top is and the compartment where it is stored is extremely tidy and neat, free of any moisture or dirt. All original books and manuals are present and accounted for including the original delivery date and matching numbers data card. Huff key and valet key included for the central locking system. 1971 Mercedes-Benz 200-Series Remarkable Survivor!

(See in Scottsdale - January '17) We will have this car and other quality classic Mercedes in Scottsdale from Jan 15 - 22, about 2 miles from the Gooding auction site. Prior to that date you can see the car in L.A. County. Introduced for 1970, the Mercedes 280SE 3.5 Coupe was fitted with a powerful V-8 engine. Referred to as the 'engine of tomorrow' by Mercedes, they put much of their effort into making the engine both powerful and smooth. Featuring electronic fuel injection and transistorized ignition, the power output was a robust 230hp. And no American car of that time could match the new Mercedes' mix of engineering, design, performance and quality. In a review of the car in the September 1970 issue of Car & Driver they said "You'd have to say that sustained high speeds are just about the name of the game with the Mercedes-Benz. We went out Interstate 80 a solid 20 miles, and returned, and ran all the way flat-out (well, maybe lifting just a touch for the long, sweeping turns.) Zoom! Out, and then (zoom!) back. and the car never gave any indication that it was doing anything strenuous. There was no rise in water temperature; no drop in oil pressure. That was a fairly convincing demonstration of high-speed capability, with the speedometer (which proved to be quite accurate) reading up around 125127 mph on the level. Impressive, too, for the quietness at those speeds ". Mercedes produced a total of only 3,270 coupes and 1,232 cabriolets of the 3.5 between 1969 and 1971. Other than the 600 Grand this was said to be Mercedes' flagship model, made to compete with the Rolls Royce Corniche (and priced within $500). At around $14,000 with options (almost everything came standard on the North American version), it was priced at almost twice that of a 280SL roadster. You really have to drive one of these unique cars to be able to describe the difference between the two. This very original 52,000 mile 3.5 coupe has the same beautiful color combination that was displayed in the sales brochure for the car in 1970, dark red paint (542G) with cognac leather interior. And it is complimented with beautiful burlwood on the dash and "A" pillars. The cognac leather interior is original and has the "proper patina" as one would expect on a car of this caliber. The chrome really tells the story of the car. (To re-plate chrome to look like this you would have to pay about $25,000). Personally, I have never witnessed original chrome of this condition on any other 3.5. The previous owner of this car had it in Arizona for approximately 15 years, and it is believed to have been in a similar climate most of its life. I have had a few of these 3.5 coupes (including top award winners) and yet nothing quite compares to the way this car feels and drives. It still has a hi-gloss shine that illuminates incredibly in the sun. The body panels are laser straight with factory shut lines. There are no paint blemishes or bubbles. Paint depth is even and smooth showing no indications of accidents, incidents or bondo. The bolts appear to be unturned and original. The interior is the original Blue Leather that came with the vehicle and it does not have any rips, tears or fading. All of the surfaces including the middle consul are like new. The buttons don't have finger marks. As mentioned earlier this vehicle is like a time capsule so well preserved and looking like a 20,000 mile car would that has always been garaged and sparingly driven after 40 years. The vehicle features 4 power windows all the way around and does not have a middle pillar separating front and rear windows. Equipped with a sunroof that's controlled by a push button motor. The cruise control works and so do all the electric switches and dashboard lights. Interior dome lights and gauges are all in proper working order. The needles are still bright orange. It comes with a Blaupunkt AM/FM cassette stereo. The factory AC works and blows cold air. The fluids were recently refreshed. All original factory MB glass is in place. The bright work, rubber and trim are in very good condition. Comes with the original 14 inch bundt cake rims. On the highway is where this young engine truly performs. The 4.5L V8 starts right up and idles smooth. Shifting effortlessly through all 3 gears, it revs right up to 80 miles per hour with plenty more room on the throttle. With full power top to bottom on this motor, it's amazing this car is 40 years old. The suspension rides exactly as Mercedes intended driving firm and tight down the road. The steering tracks straight and tight without play. The engine bay is very neat and tidy. You will not find rust anywhere on this vehicle including the underside. All of the trunk pockets, jacking points and wheel wells are clean and rust free. The SLC was born from road rally racing. The chassis is 14 inches longer than the SL convertible roadster. With a sightly longer body and the fixed head roof that's a few inches taller than the SL, a road performance improvement is quite noticeable. SLC was the flagship Mercedes car during its production run. The USA version had only the V-8 engine available with leather seats, wood trim, AC and sunroof all standard. This is a rare low mile original time capsule SL with just 39,770 original miles on the odometer. It comes with original factory hard and soft top. In excellent high quality condition, the vehicle has virtually been in the same owner's hands since newly purchased in May of 1979.Always garaged and kept out of weather and sun the car is beautiful and shows in excellent condition. The paint is largely original with proper depth thickness. There does not appear to be any indication of accidents, issues or bondo as the body panels are all factory even gaps, straight lines and laser fitment. There are a few minor imperfections to be expected on a vehicle of this age (such as a minor scratch here and there). All the glass, rubber, brightwork and trim are in very nice preserved condition. There is absolutely NO RUST anywhere on the vehicle. It drives like Mercedes intended with a very tight suspension, no play in the steering and tracks incredibly smooth and straight down the road. This is not your ordinary loose and shaky 450SL with excess miles and typical vibrations you'd hear on a high mileage car. You don't get the usual outside air blowing in through the window rubber seals and cracks. The transmission shifts accurately and smooth through the gears. The motor starts right up and idles steady. It drives with full power top to bottom on this strong-young motor. New plugs and wires were recently installed. Additionally the AC/Heat servo was just replaced. The 14 inch factory alloy non-chrome wheels do not have curb rash and damage.The blue leather interior is in stunning like new original condition with no sagging on the seats, separation of seams or leather fade. Truly, it resembles a time capsule it is so nice. The carpet shows very nice, wood is in beautiful condition and the dashboard is all original free of cracks, fading or damage. The instrument cluster gauges all work as they should. The needles still have their orange/red color. All power windows, electric switches and lights are in working order. It comes with the original factory Becker AM/FM radio that still operates. The trunk has the original spare and tool roll kit. The soft top is original and Navy Blue in color - without any cracks, rips, tears or foggy/dirty windows. It is amazing how well preserved the original soft top is and the compartment where it is stored is extremely tidy and neat, free of any moisture or dirt. All original books and manuals are present and accounted for including the original delivery date and matching numbers data card. Huff key and valet key included for the central locking system. We only have some recent service records unfortunately as the previous owner passed away and the file was never located.
