G And S Motors LLC WeLoveCoolCars.com +1 828 654-3222 1939 Mercedes 170V Cabriolet Successor to the W15 six-cylinder 170 model, the 170V, internal code W136, was slightly larger than its predecessor, more powerful and fitted with a 1,697 cc inline L-head four-cylinder engine, four-speed manual gearbox, four-wheel independent suspension, and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Introduced in 1936, it had a more streamlined body than the 170 and was sold at a lower price. The “V” signified vorn, German for front, distinguishing it from the rear-engine 170 H model, with the “H” standing for heck, or rear. The 170V’s reliability and ease of use meant that it fell naturally to taxi work, which is a role that Mercedes continues in Germany to this day. THIS CAR This 170V, delivered in August 1939 through the Daimler-Benz Königsberg branch, has the unusual cabriolet saloon body. It is essentially a four-door with a fold-back black fabric roof that gives open air to all passengers when opened. The side rails and windows, however, remain in place, providing shelter from the wind and cold. The 170V was the most popular Mercedes model in its day, with more than 70,000 built from 1936 to 1942. The Cabriolet Saloon, however, is one of the more unusual variations, and it is seldom seen today. Certainly, they are rarely seen in this condition. This is a stunning car and looks every bit of ten times the actual price! This beautiful 170V was part of a substantial European Mercedes collection for many years. It sat proudly next to 300SL’s and pre-war 500K and 540K Roadsters, until 2013 when I purchased it and brought it to America for the first time in it’s long life. This isn’t one of the fastest cars in my stable but it certainly is one of the most appreciated. The black paint has a deep shine and very few blemishes. The brightwork has all been recently re-plated. The car is upholstered in tan leather, which is all in excellent condition. The dashboard is painted gloss black and presents very well, whilst tan carpet lines the floor. A day-night mirror is mounted above the windscreen. The rear of the car has an exposed spare tire with a fitted black fabric cover. The engine compartment and undercarriage are finished to an excellent standard and fully functional. HERE’S A SHORT VIDEO OF THIS 170V STARTING AND DRIVING This beauty will turn heads and get the “thumbs up” wherever you go. People love it and it will be very much appreciated at any concours event. I purchased this car last year from a large European Mercedes collection and brought it to America for the first time in it’s long life. It isn’t the fastest car in my stable but it certainly is one of the most appreciated. The previous owner had this car inspected in 2010 by Norbert Shroeder of Kleofactum in 2010. (see this Bloomberg article about Norbert Shroeder). Here is a scanned copy of the inspection from 2010 (minus pics). It was written as an “appraisal”, but values were not given to any of the cars. G And S Motors LLC WeLoveCoolCars.com +1 828 654-3222 1935 Mercedes 170 Sedan Mercedes’ bread-and-butter car in the 1930s was the 170, which was introduced in 1931. As a six-cylinder model, it was compact yet advanced. The wheelbase was a scant 2,600 millimeters but, on this modest chassis, the manufacturers fitted a 1.7-litre six, fully independent rear suspension (twin transverse leaf springs at the front and swing axles at the rear), four-wheel hydraulic brakes and central lubrication, which kept the chassis in excellent condition. Nearly 14,000 were built through 1936, but few survive to this day and fewer still in this amazing condition. THIS CAR This smart looking saloon was delivered through the Daimler-Benz Dresden branch in October 1935 to Herr Karl Harlüng, of Pirna, Germany, as per a copy of the factory data card. Included is also the original owner’s manual, as well as Harlüng’s original registration documents. It has since been the recipient of a restoration, where it was finished in maroon with black wings. The roof has a black vinyl insert that is outlined in aluminum moldings. The original owners manual and original German registration. I’ve never seen a pre-war car with these docs before! The body is by Mercedes-Benz Karosserie at Sindelfingen, the same location where Mercedes were producing the iconic 500K and 540K Special Roadsters. This stunning sedan carries it's emblem, as well as trafficators, which are mounted to the front door posts. The headlamp bar has a medallion for ÖAMTC, an Austrian motor club that was founded in 1896 and is apparently equivalent to the Automobile Association. SEE OVER 100 PICS HERE!!! The interior has tan leather seats and matching door panels in vinyl. They show some careful use but no excessive wear. The beige carpets are in very good condition and the headliner is unblemished. There is a boot at the rear, with a spare tire mounted behind it. The engine compartment is nicely detailed. I purchased this car last year from a large European Mercedes collection and brought it to America for the first time in it’s long life. It isn’t the fastest car in my stable but it certainly is one of the most appreciated. Here is a scanned copy of the inspection from 2010 (minus pics). It was written as an “appraisal”, but values were not given to any of the cars. This car is a very nice example of an early model 170 that's ready for your next pre-war concours. It turns heads and gets the "thumbs-up" wherever we go.
