Euro 1970 Mercedes Benz 300SEL 6.3 ~Rare Two Tone Paint~~Rebuilt Air Suspension Valves~~Powerful Euro High Compression Motor~~New Leather~~Toolkit~~Original Dunlop Spare~~Original Gemi Glamps still present~~Upgraded Headlights~~New Door, Trunk and Sunroof Seals~~Just Serviced~ This 1970 Mercedes 300SEL 6.3 was ordered new in Hamburg, Germany and was imported in the late 70's by a United Airlines pilot who owned the car until 2007. In 2007, a well known 6.3 enthusiast purchased the car from the Pilot, who had the car in Southern Oregon. I purchased the car from the enthusiast and proceeded to restore it cosmetically. The car has a number of rare options in addition the the highly desired 9:1 high compression european model 6.3L V8. The car's options include a factory two tone paint scheme, sunroof, orthopedic driver's front seat backrest, two tone horns (fanfare horns), rear fog lamp (now missing), front fog lamps, rear heated glass, Becker Grand Prix, rear headrests (quite rare!), first aid kit and fire extinguisher (missing). Please scroll down to the bottom to see over 100 enlarged photos or click HERE to see the online album. Drivetrain: The car runs and drives impressively. I've driven over 40 6.3's over the years and this car has easily separated itself from the pack. I can confidently say it is one of the top 5 best driving 6.3's I have ever driven. It starts up immediately and idles great. You can drive it anywhere with confidence. The transmission shifts crisply and the motor is extremely strong. The 9:1 high compression euro motor puts a smile on my face every time I drive this car. The car is in fantastic mechanical condition and I would not hesitate to drive it anywhere. The only thing I would do prior to an extended trip is replace the tires as they are older. Suspension: The air suspension on the car has just had freshly rebuilt air valves installed. There is only a very small/slow leak from the front left air bag. Paint: The re-spray on this car is extremely nice and I can comfortably say it is just a tad below a show quality job. There is one small chip on the front right fender that I noticed. There are a few other tiny flaws including one area in the rear passenger door jamb that has chipped. The paint shines beautifully and is overall in great shape. The two tone scheme really pops and makes the car look elegant. Electrical: The sunroof, windows, A/C, heater controls, lights, radio, antenna all work excellently. Radio: The radio is a freshly rebuilt Becker Grand Prix stereo with a modern replacement (classic look) power antenna. Both work perfectly. The radio has a iPod/aux input so you can hook up your phone and play your jams. The car currently has two nice rear speakers installed. The front speaker was removed and was never replaced. Headlights: The headlights and driving (fog) lights have all been upgraded to more modern higher output bulbs. The low beams are Hella H4's, the high beams are Hella H1's and the round fog lamps have been upgraded to Hella Classic 160's with H1 bulbs. It is literally night and day between the stock bulbs. The drivability and night has improved ten fold. The old stock lights just don't cut it. Headlight upgrades are one of the non-original upgrades that are a must. Most people won't even notice the upgrade. Wood: The wood was almost all excellent and original when I bought the car so I left it as is. The front door panel strips have begun to show cracking of the finish. The dash bow is very nice besides the typical sun exposure and mild finish damage. Those three pieces are really the only ones that show damage. I would leave the wood as is, but some people may want to refinish those. No re-veneering is needed anywhere on the set. The dash fascia wood is beautiful to look at. You can't beat the original look. All the modern restored wood is far too shiny and cheap looking. Carpets: The carpets in the car are quite nice, but being original, show some wear and staining. The majority of the carpets are fine, but the front entry sills and an area below the AC unit on the passenger side show signs of age and wear. I left them as is and installed nice heavy duty custom floor mats in. Dash: The dash pad has no cracks! The heater controls are also present and all work properly. The AC motor works and blows nice and strong, but the AC will need recharging. Leather: The car originally had blue velour in it that had become very faded and had a few rips on the drivers bolster. I replaced the entire seat setup with leather and it came out fantastic. The blue leather goes great with the door panels and matches the vinyl on the panels excellently. The door panels are near mint so I left them as is. Bodywork: The car has had the front rockers replaced at some point and it was not the most ideal replacement. The metal work, when stripped down to bare metal for the respray, showed some small issues on the front passenger rocker area, but nothing of any great concern. There is just a small amount of surface rust in that area now. Whoever replaced the front of the rockers didn't smooth out the welds all the way. The rest of the car is excellent, the only sign of rust repair in the past is that spot on the front rockers. Everything is completely solid. See pictures below. Chrome: The chrome is extremely nice around the doors and windows. The lower chrome moldings that run on the fenders and doors is brand new. The bumpers have a few areas of small pitting and a couple of small dings, but nothing out of this world. I left them original because they didn't bother me. Exhaust: The exhaust had a few repairs in the last year or two and is great. One thing I never got around to doing was replacing the exhaust tips with some factory ones. I don't like the aftermarket ones currently installed. Brakes: The brakes are excellent and work great. One thing I did not was a tiny amount of seeping from the rear left caliper. So sometime in the future that will need new seals. Other than that everything is excellent. Steering: The is excellent and has just been serviced. I had new tie rods, a center drag link and a new steering damper all installed. After that was done I had the car aligned. It drives and steers wonderfully. Door Locks: The door locks and trunk lock all work perfectly and hold vacuum properly. Recent Service: When I had the car last serviced I had my mechanic, replace the sunroof seals and lubricate it, replace the dual points, clean the cap and rotor, install an new coil, install new plug wires and plugs, installed a new fuel pump, install new wiper blades, adjust the belts, tie rods, drag link, steering damper, oil change, coolant flush, shift linkage bushings, new flex disc and replace exhaust donuts. Freshly rebuilt air valves have just been installed in the suspension. Known Issues:Chip in paint on front right fender and chipping in door jambSmall, slow air leak in left front bagFront dome light needs clip adjusted, it keeps popping out of place randomlyCarpets show some wearPrevious hole filled on center console to the right of shifter gateRight Rear Door needs adjustment forward as it is catching the rear 1/4 slightly and scratched jamb paintFuel tank vapor vent needs 3 inch flex hoses replacesTires are older and should be replaced soonSmall dings on bumper and pittingSmall glued patch on rear headliner less than square inchFirst Aid Kit Contents are gone I have a clean and clear Oregon title in my name. 1972 Mercedes Benz 300SEL 4.5 This sunroof 300sel 4.5 has spent the majority of its life in the Pacific NW. The last two owners have lived in the greater Portland area and drove the car around once per week. I bought the car thinking I was going to have the time to restore it cosmetically, but I have become too busy. The car is currently registered and runs and drives very nicely. The car definitely needs a cosmetic restoration and various small mechanical fixes, but its bones are quite solid. Interestingly, this car was ordered in 735 Astral Silver instead the standard 180 silver. It is a bit more brilliant and quite rare to see. Please scroll down to the bottom to see 70 enlarged photos or click Here to see the online album. Drivetrain: The car runs and drives very well. It starts up immediately and idles great. You can drive it anywhere with confidence. It was being driven regularly before I bought it. The transmission shifts excellently and the motor is still very strong. The drivetrain makes the car worth restoring. Suspension: The air suspension is another bright side to the car. I have left this car parked for 4 months and the darn thing didn't drop an inch. The air suspension has been maintained excellently and is in proper condition. It will hold air indefinitely. Paint: The paint on the car has become oxidized and has lost its luster. It is an older repaint and will need to be redone. There are various scratches and small areas of bubbling you can see in the pictures below. Electrical: The car has a few noted electrical issues including one of the rear reading lights needing to be reconnected and the drivers side headlight needing to be connected properly. When the low beams are turned the drivers side low beam does not turn on, but on high beams all come on properly. There will need to be some connections fixed on that. I would also adjust the lamps because they are not leveled properly. The emergency lights work great, the radio works, all the windows work excellent except the drivers window (drivers window won't shut the last inch or two: it will need a new regulator arm), sunroof works but needs lubrication and new sliders as it tends to get stiff and needs a little push on the last inch when shutting. Wood: The wood needs restoration. All of the wood is solid except the dash bow. The ends of the dash bow are delaminated and you will probably want to replace it with a more solid piece to restore. Everything else can be refinished and won't need re-veneering. Carpets: The carpets in the car will need replacing. They are worn out and some original pieces are missing, now covered with more modern mats. Dash: The dash pad has no cracks! The heater controls are also present and all work properly. The AC motor works and blows nice and strong, but the AC will need recharging. Leather: The leather will need replacing, the rear seat backrest is not terrible but it does have cracks on the top from sun exposure. The front headrests are missing. Bodywork: The car has various dings and small dents. The rear panel looks like it has been pushed in slightly by a fender bender. The drivers door has seen the worst over the years. There is a good sized dent on the lower portion seen in the pictures. There are also a handful of small dings around the car. The car itself is very solid besides the typical areas where rust starts to rear its ugly head. The sides of the trunk have surface rust starting to show and there is a very small pin hole on the left side near the factory drain hole. There is also a small little rust through spot on the passenger side footwell. Besides that the car is completely solid underneath. The only other serious rust I noted can be seen in the pictures of the bubbling rear 1/4 panels and some surface rust on the front rocker panel pieces. Being an Oregon car it is not nearly as far gone as some of the East Coast ones you will see. I also noted a small amount of surface rust starting to show on the rear lip of the sunroof. Chrome: The chrome is average and has some areas of pitting and small surface rust dots on the rear bumper. Some of the anodized aluminum trim is starting to oxidize a bit and get that hazy look. There are a few scratches but for the most part the chrome is free of dents and quite decent. Exhaust: The exhaust seems fine besides some small leaks. It sounds a tad louder than it should be so there may be a pin hole or two that needs fixing. Brakes: The brakes are excellent and work fine but do squeak a bit. Steering: The steering is nimble but slightly loose feeling. I am guessing some tie rods will need replacing in the near future. Known Issues:Tie rod replacement neededDrivers window regulator needs replacingAntenna mast needs replacementCar needs Complete cosmetic restorationVacuum door locks work (except for passenger side door) but need adjustmentDrivers side rear door latch seized shut so will need door panel removed to get open and lubricatedAC needs re-chargingBrakes pads need anti-squeel lubricant Headlight wiring needs fixingSmall exhaust leaks need fixingSunroof needs lubrication and new slidersCar needs new front glass, rear glass and door gasketsDoor moldings have a few dingsHeadlight doors missing original screwsWindshield has a light scratch from bad rubber wiper (may be able to polish out)Hood release cable needs replacing or adjustment, currently using pliers to pop hoodTires are old and worn out, need replacingCigarette lighter missingWiper arms need attachment properly, motor works excellent at both speeds DO NOT BID IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THE MEANS TO PAY!
