In 1971 Maserati introduced its first mid-engine car; the Bora. The Bora was to be Maseratis flagship model utilizing the V8 engine that had been used on the Ghibli and Indy. During this time Maserati was owned by the French company Citroen. Citroen had purchased Maserati to develop a V6 engine for their flagship car. That car was the Citroen SM. To expand their offerings in 1972 Maserati introduced the Merak which was essentially a “baby Bora”. The Merak uses many of the same body panels as the Bora, especially in the front of the car. The power on the Merak was the V6 engine which had been developed for the SM. In order to reduce costs the Merak was to use the interior dashboard of the SM and leather interior was optional. By 1977 the Bora was ending production which left the Merak to fill in the void of Maserati’s flagship sports car. The Merak received a major overhaul and was renamed Merak SS. The engine increased in power and was upgraded with better chain tensioners. Leather interior was now standard. More significantly, the very attractive Bora dash layout replaced the previous.Another significant change was that the Citroen hydraulic system which controlled the brakes was replaced with brakes similar to those used on the Ghibli. This particular Merak SS was sold in October 1980 and has only 14,000 original miles and essentially two owners (the third owner only drove it 20 miles). The paint and interior are original and, as can been seen on the photos, the car presents itself very well. Upon close inspection there is some cracking of the paint on the two front fenders. I was tempted to have a body shop repair these areas but there is something to be said about a car having original paint so I decided to leave it alone. Needless to say the car is accident and rust free. Mechanically the car is very strong. Compression on all cylinders is excellent: 1 – 150psi 4 - 145psi 2 – 155psi 5 - 155psi 3 – 150psi 6 - 155psi Oil pressure is over 100psi at 3,000 rpms with oil at normal operating temperature. 5 speed gearbox shifts very smoothly. All gauges in working order, including the clock. The AC fan is working but does not blow cold. Interior lights, headlights, wipers, radio, electric antenna, electric windows are in working order Undercarriage is clean and you can see most of its original gold cad plating still intact in the suspension and brake parts. The following service was recently done: - Carbs were overhauled - New Euro exhaust manifold installed (USA thermal reactors are really bad) - New distributor cap and spark plug wires - Engine oil and UFI filter - New air filter - New fuel filter - New Continental tires - Replaced fuel lines - New battery - Top chain tension checked - New radiator fans thermo switch - Oil sump checked and cleaned Car comes with original User manuals including the Warranty booklet and window sales sticker. Car was priced at $40,775 in 1980; which is over $122,000 in 2015 dollars. Also included are the original jack and its complete tool kit in like new condition. I have most of the parts needed to convert the bumpers to the more attractive European spec metal bumpers. This includes new front and rear bumpers, new license plate lights, new front turn lights, rear valance and Euro quad pipe rear muffler. The buyer of this car will have first right of refusal to these parts, if not interested in the conversion I will sell the parts separately. If you like low mileage unmolested cars then this Merak SS might be for you. The car was in the process of being restored when it came to me. There are some rust areas that will need to be addressed but the frame does not show any signs of collision nor are they rusted. Brightwork is all present and in nice shape. The interior is original and most can be salvaged. Engine is all apart and will need a rebuilt. Block liners look very good. Glass is good. Brake and suspension were not disassembled and are still on the car. The good news is the car appears to be complete. Needless to say it will take time and work but it is a very doable project. According to Maserati factory records this Indy was built August 1972 and delivered in Bologna, Italy. It is a Euro version with the more powerful 4.7 liter engine (many were 4.2), 5-speed and optional power steering. The Euro version came with a more attractive steering wheel and none of the power robbing emission equipment. The original color combination was Grigio New Market with black interior. Grigio New Market is between a silver and dark grey ... very attractive color for an Indy. Car comes with extra right side door, new rear exhaust and side glass rubber. Car is just north of Atlanta, Georgia and can be viewed by appointment.
