General History:The Defender first entered UK military service in 1985, in both long and short wheelbase forms. Early vehicles were all powered by the '12J' 2.5 non-turbo diesel engine, and available as either General Service (GS) or Fitted For Radio (FFR) versions. Over the following ten years very large numbers of these basic variants were purchased by the MoD. There followed much smaller quantities of more specialised Defenders - 127 inch Rapier missile carriers, lightly armoured 110 V8s (the now infamous 'Snatch'), GS 110 V8s for the RAF and Special Forces, 110 ambulances and a few other specialised vehicles. In 1997 the next generation military Defender entered service, officially known as TUL/TUM and unofficially as the Wolf. This was based on the Defender 300TDi but extensively redesigned for military use, with strengthened chassis and axles, and 24 volt electrical system throughout.Around 2007 it was decided to refurbish some of the better 110 Defenders to extend their service life, the result being the 'Tithonus', with a new Wolf-style roof and rollover protection, better seats, internal soundproofing and a light mechanical overhaul. Mechanical specification remained unchanged. The idea was to extend the life from twenty to thirty years. Over the last couple of years the Army has been phasing out all the older 90 inch vehicles and is now starting to dispose of the Wolf 90s (apparently they are unable to carry all the radio kit the Army now require). A few older Nineties are still coming through the system, but if you want one you should not wait too long. The older One Tens are being steadily sold off, and Tiithonus vehicles are now starting to be released in some quantities, despite being only half way through their projected life. The 110 Wolf remains very much part of the core fleet: only a tiny number of these have been disposed of.? Turbo Diesel 300 TDI Engine:The 300 TDi had an all new block, internally strengthened to allow the cast strengthener to be dumped. All the external ancillaries were moved around: the oil filter housing now occupied the space previously taken by the offside engine mount, a piston-type vacuum pump was fitted where the fuel lift pump had been, and the engine mounting brackets (a totally new design) were moved much further back along the block. The cylinder head was redesigned with recessed combustion chambers and a modified valve rocker assembly. At the front, a single flat ribbed 'serpentine' drive belt replaced the 200's two V-profile belts, the water pump was moved to a much higher position (and made much smaller) with the power steering pump just below it. He was transferred to Minot , ND this winter . He had the vehicle shipped over and soon learned the harsh weather conditions can make it tough on a vehicle. Instead of letting the harsh weather take a beating on his baby he decided to sell it and get a new FJ Cruiser. You are looking at a 1989 Land Rover Defender 110 12 Passenger 4x4. It is powered with a turbo diesel engine and five speed manual transmission . It is equipped with many standard options and includes an am/fm/cd player. The interior of this Land Rover overall is in good shape, but natuarlly shows some 25 year old age here and there .The seats are in good shape. The floor overall is in good shape. I took some pictures of where there is some rust around the foot well area . This is about the only significant rust I noticed and it really is an easy fix. I also noticed the headliner is sagging throughout. The exterior of the Land Rover overall is n the shape you would expect for it's age. There is some character here and there, but I didn't notice any signifcant rust or anything.The windshield is in good shape. Mechanically, this Land Rover starts right up and runs good.The transmission shifts smooth. The four wheel drive functions properly .The front end is tight. The tires are in average shape. The thing I would point out is I noticed an oil leak that can leave a good puddle at times. Overall opinion: This is one of the more unique vehicles we have posted on Ebay . We are not Land Rover experts at all. Howver, we wil try to answer any questions you might and also encourage a good walk around if you are serious about purchasing it. I would venture to say since this vehicle was driven across the country to its current destination it probably will go anywhere , but I would check the oil and other fluids occasionally.
