Available again with less than 400 additional miles! Last month I was high bidder in a popular eBay auction for this '96 Moss Green Jeep Cherokee. I had been searching since mid-March for a low-mileage, rust-free, five-speed XJ and, according to the description and 100 photographs on eBay, this was it. Representation and reality, however, are not necessarily one and the same, and this Cherokee once again finds itself on eBay. So that I can provide you with the most comprehensive and truthful description of this vehicle, please: Read my description and view my photographs carefully. Then, if you are interested in making an offer (or even if you want to tell me that my Buy It Now price seems high) click on "Ask seller a question" and enter "more info." I will reply promptly. * 1996 Jeep Cherokee XJ Sport, Rare Manual Transmission, Gorgeous Moss Green Pearl, ~98K Miles This 1996 Cherokee has an AutoCheck score of 56 with a similar-vehicle range of 13 to 37: zero accidents, zero title or odometer discrepancies, zero negative events. The transmission is a smooth-shifting five-speed manual with, according to the Philadelphia-based eBay dealer who sold it to me, a new clutch and pressure plate. Although the shifter knob is loose, the rubber boot is clean and crack-free. The paint is original; its overall finish is very handsome. On three of the four doors there are scratches that appear to have been caused by a key or some other sharp object; they have been traced with the correct-color touched-up paint (not by me). These scratches are not severe, but they can be seen whether or not someone points them out.* There are assorted lighter scratches in other areas appropriate to the vehicle's age and mileage. There are two minor hood defects, both filled in with touch-up paint. There is a very shallow (approximately 1.25" wide x .1" deep) dent on the lower portion of the front passenger door. Photos are available and will be sent promptly upon request. The roof's clear-coat shows the effects of weather and UV exposure, not only at the rear by the liftgate but pretty much across the entire surface.* The factory-installed protective cargo strips are peeling off;* the rack cross bars are slightly bent. There is a crack adjacent to the left-side liftgate hinge* (pre-'97 Cherokee liftgates are fiberglass). Since this vehicle has low mileage and is from a region where the sun shines only half the year, I suspect it was parked primarily outdoors. Were I to keep this Cherokee I would remove the rubber strips, sand the surface smooth, and apply new paint or another coating. The interior of this Jeep is odor-free save for the aroma of black spray paint and brush-on undercoating recently applied (not by me) to the undercarriage. There is no indication of cigarette-smoker use. The carpeting is original and very clean; there is no damp-carpet-caused rust around the seat bases. The upholstery is original and, except for a few stained areas* (that can probably be shampooed out), looks good. The dashboard has no cracks. (There are two small patches of residual adhesive foam, probably from a stick-on accessory holder.) The door panels and headliner are secure and look good; the glove-box door latches properly. The center-console lid is a bit rickety, but only because it is missing two screws. The driver's door-check bracket is worn where the pin sits; a replacement is available on eBay for $10. The original Jeep owner's manual is included. The power door locks do not work; this may merely be a fuse or relay problem, and I will gladly check for power if asked. There is a 15”-high by .75”-wide scrape on the outside of the front passenger-door window glass (perhaps caused by an abrasive object that got stuck between glass and squeegee).* The clip that retains the driver-door squeegee is detached at the rear; on the driver-side rear door the clip and squeegee are bowed outward,* allowing for water penetration. The power windows work well and all gauges seem to function as designed. The engine compartment is beautiful. The cooling system was, I was told by the dealer, recently flushed; the serpentine belt is new; all hoses appear sound and both cooling fans seem to work well. The hood-prop retaining clip is missing; it is available on eBay for $7. I am unaware of any fluid leaks, but will gladly check if asked. This vehicle has not been driven since I returned with it from Philadelphia and parked it at my home in Pittsburgh on May 3rd, so if leaks exist they should be apparent by now. The 4.0-liter I6 engine has lots of power: it starts immediately, accelerates powerfully, and maintains 75 mph quietly and effortlessly. My scheduled afternoon pickup was delayed by the dealer until after dark, so the only thing I could tell at first about my purchase (other than how it was described on eBay) was that it drove as well as I had hoped. And that I immediately got a headache from fresh-paint fumes. The AC compressor is, I was told by the dealer, new. It looks new. The system, however, blows warm air. The Dayton tires match but are not new; they appear to have between 5,000 and 8,000 miles on them. The driver-side front tire has damaged center tread, as if it rubbed against something rough for quite a while.* The full-size spare, which I have not inspected but will if asked, is under a very nice cover. This Cherokee tracks straight on the open road at highway speed, and brakes efficiently and true. The steering has minor play, appropriate to the mileage. I was told by the dealer that the brakes are new and that the hydraulics were recently bled. The undercarriage of this vehicle is a combination of healthy-looking sheet metal and components, recently applied spray-paint and rubber-undercoating, and rust that varies from inconsequential surface oxidation to rot. The passenger-side steering knuckle is very corroded, as is the rear drive shaft.* The anti-sway bar is a study in flaking rusty layers;* the bump-stop mounts are almost gone;* the brake lines appear to be corroded, although I did not test them for soundness;* there is at least one part of the cargo-area floor rusting through* (I chose not to push on it). The disc-brake shields are barely recognizable.* The area above where the left leaf-spring shackle attaches to the monocoque frame is severely rusted and ineptly half-covered (not by me) with brush-stabbed rubberized-undercoating.* The opposite-side shackle-attachment area is rusted to a lesser degree;* there has been no undercoating applied to conceal it. My Gino Vannelli cassettes sounded good through the original Jeep stereo. If I outbid you when this Cherokee was first listed from April 16 - 21, now is your chance for a second chance with full disclosure from a seller who has complied to the letter with eBay's written instructions: "Include details that may not be evident in your pictures, such as any dents or dings . . . ." Buy this Cherokee "NOW" for what I paid or, if my straightforward, honest description suggests it is worth less, send me your best offer. By all means feel free to ask me any questions. In my original (Sunday) listing for this Cherokee I did what eBay tells sellers to do, namely "Indicate if you are the original owner or where you purchased the vehicle," but my listing was removed for specifying where I purchased the vehicle.
