This stunning early E-Type is offered for sale on the classic car market for the first time. I have owned this special car for 28 years. I rescued it from a Los Angeles scrapyard in 1987, it then received a proper full restoration and was placed back into service in 1990. I have shown, driven, and maintained it ever since. The car is now located in Madison, Wisconsin. I am not a dealer, this is the only classic car I own, and I have put an untold amount of my own sweat, blood, and money into it over the years. Due to the rate at which this early and beautiful E-Type is increasing in value, I have reluctantly decided it is time for me to sell it and find a new project. In its current condition (Condition 2 if not better, in my estimation), it has won numerous trophies and people’s choice awards. I have been asked to bring this car to multiple invitation-only concours d'elegance, the most recent being the Milwaukee Masterpiece in August of this year (as seen in one of the photos). With a small additional investment (compared to its ultimate value), I believe this car would be a JCNA or concours winner at any venue, if that is the buyer's desire. It is incredibly beautiful to look at, but this car also has been kept in proper tune and maintained for spirited driving. It has lived in a temperature controlled garage since its restoration, with about 10,500 miles driven during those 25 years. This car showcases the timeless lines and performance of the E-Type as beautifully as any example you will ever see. I fully intend to sell this car and would like it to go to the buyer it deserves. I believe I have set a very fair Buy Now price, and I expect the car will sell at that price. Again, I am not a dealer, and I have no desire to play games. For anyone interested in purchasing or making an offer, I strongly encourage you to call me first, as I will only sell to a buyer I feel comfortable with. If you have a history of bid retractions or other eBay problems, please don’t bother trying to purchase this car, as I will not sell to you. I will happily answer questions, and I expect potential buyers will do the same. I have included many photos in this listing (and others are available upon request). Please examine them, read the description below, and feel free to contact me if you are interested or have questions. I would love to discuss this car with any serious buyer. My telephone number is (608) 848-5333, please ask for Tom. At my full discretion, this listing may end early. Please read the description and terms of sale below BEFORE making an offer or purchasing. DESCRIPTION: This is an early E-Type, car number 885444, the 444th left-hand drive coupe to leave the factory, manufacture date January 9, 1962. It has flat floors and square rear bulkhead, along with other less obvious features of early E-Types. This car does not have outside bonnet locks or welded bonnet louvers. I have a personal letter (dated 1988) from Jaguar at Browns Lane confirming the car’s history, as well as the car’s Heritage Certificate. I have traced the car’s history back to its original owner in Seattle. All historical documentation, restoration records and receipts are included with this sale, along with a tool roll (non-original but including some period tools), jack, two car covers, and a large assortment of small spare parts. Engine: After its initial rebuild by a local shop in 1989, a valve failure led to a second major rebuild of this car’s 3.8 liter engine in 2004, only about 3,500 miles ago. It is possibly the last XK engine to be rebuilt by the late John Miller of Straight Six Jaguar in California, one of the truly iconic Jaguar men. He rebuilt this engine to stock 9:1 specifications. It is really just coming out of its break-in period and pulls very strongly. I have fitted a modern spin-on oil filter conversion, as well as a gear-reduction starter, but still have the originals. I do not believe the block and head to be original to this car, numbers do not match. This car has what I consider a typical amount of oil drip from the usual places. Gearbox: The original Moss box has been very reliable. Synchromesh is strong on third and top gears, solid on second if the driver knows what he or she is doing. I have noticed no inappropriate noises. Suspension, Rear Axle & Steering: This car is fitted with 3.31 rear axle, as far as I know it was shipped from the factory with this option. Koni shocks on all four wheels. The rebuilt steering rack is precise and responsive. Exhaust: Exhaust system is stock configuration, upgraded with stainless mufflers. The exhaust manifolds were recently coated by Jet-Hot, an attractive and durable compromise for a driven show car, compared to the poor quality porcelain coatings now available. Cooling: A high volume puller fan has been fitted, with remote switch under dash. The heater core and bulkhead pipes have been bypassed as I have had no need for a heater. I do not know if the heater core or fan motor are serviceable, as I’ve never examined or tested them. The original alloy radiator was functional when I originally restored the car, but I have since fitted a more modern replacement that looks proper and has worked very well for me. The rare original radiator is included with this sale. Fuel System: Rust-free system, sealed fuel tank, all fuel lines recently replaced. The original immersed fuel pump is in place (serviceability unknown) but the car uses an external SU pump which has been fitted inside the right rear quarter panel. The triple SU carbs are in excellent and reliable tune. Brakes: Stock system, upgraded with stainless steel brake lines and Green Stuff pads. The brake and clutch systems use silicone fluid. Wheels & Tires: At the time of restoration, four new chrome wire wheels were fitted, sealed for tubeless tires, with polished stainless steel spokes and nipples for strength and a deep luster. The car is currently fitted with four Michelin XWX 185/70VR15 (very high speed rated) tires, which give superb grip and performance. Paint & Chrome: During restoration, this car received extensive professional sheet metal repairs on a rotisserie jig using proper new panels. It left the factory with cream paint and a red interior. Now, the classically beautiful paintwork is a modern, clear-coated Opalescent Silver Gray blend. This car has a deep silver-gray luster in the shade and shines with a stunning and elegant yellow, blue and green opalescence in the sunshine. At 25 years post-restoration, the paintwork and chrome appear shockingly fresh. An excellent professional repair (and respray) of a small dent was performed in the bonnet center section this summer. Interior: Gray leather seats, vinyl, moquette, hardura and carpet. Proper polka-dot alloy dash and console. Original toggle switches. Electrical: Converted to negative ground to accommodate an electronic tach generator (original instrument body retained for appearance). Upgraded with LED bulbs in gauges, instruments and panel. This car is beautiful, but no car is perfect. In addition to the description above, the following are several of the car's known imperfections. Note this is not an exhaustive list or assessment of the car's condition. All interested parties should thoroughly read the description and terms in this listing, contact me with questions, and inspect the car before making an offer or Buy Now purchase:The door courtesy lights are not wired. The windshield wiper park switch is not wired (the rebuilt wiper motor does work at both speeds). There is a small dent and a sealed paint chip at the rear of the car. This occurred in the paint shop shortly after painting. Since it is essentially covered by the right rear bumper blade, I have never bothered to fix it.There is a small dent on the bottom of one lower front sub-frame member, caused by a jack-stand.There is a light ripple in the bodywork near the upper front corner of the passenger door. There is an intermittent click in the front suspension when turning at creeping speed. I presume it is due to uneven wear in the upper wishbones, which were one of the few components not replaced during the initial restoration (due to unavailability at the time). I ignore it, as I have never heard it at any driving speed and it does not affect steering precision or stability. The front floor carpets are new but not correct. This car is beautiful to look at, tremendous on the road, and a piece of early Jaguar history. I welcome serious enquiries only. PLEASE READ THE TERMS OF SALE BELOW.
