Offered here is a 1955 Jaguar XK140 Fixed head coupe (FHC). The Jaguar XK140 was produced between 1955 and 1957 as a follow on to the XK120 which was produced from 1949 to 1954. The XK120 was introduced in 1949 as an instantly successful sleek two seated short wheel based roadster. The car was called ax XK because it included the then experimental double overhead cam 6 cylinder engine that produced 160 horsepower. It was called a 120 because each car was a replica (exact copy) of the original test car that was driven at 120 mph. Customer demand caused the later addition of a fixed head coupe (FHC) and a convertible (called in British speak) a drop head coupe (DHC) The XK140 received a larger 190 horsepower engine, rack-and-pinion steering, and more interior space. Interior space was gained by the repositioning of the engine and firewall, thus keeping the chassis dimensions identical to the XK120. This car was also a replica of a test car. That test car was driven at 140 mph. Both the XK120 and the XK140 were well suited for racing both in the US and Europe. The type C race car, based n XK120 mechanics, won the La Mans (a test of speed and endurance) in 1951, 1952 and 1953. The type D race car, based XK140 mechanics, won in 1955, 1956 and 1957. This car was bought from the heir of the previous owner who had begun restoration by having the engine rebuilt and disassembling the entire car. The car came to my shop in a shipping container as a true basket case.A frame off restoration began in 2012 and was finished in 2014. The car has been driven less than 200 miles since completion. The front suspension was rebuilt with new shock absorbers, new rubber bushings, new ball joints and new tie rod ends. The carburetors and fuel pump were rebuilt. The fuel tank was replaced with a lighter aluminum tank. The flywheel was machined smooth and the clutch and throw-out bearing were replaced. The transmission was replaced with a rebuilt overdrive transmission to provide more comfortable touring. The universal joints were also replaced. The exhaust system was replaced with a new stainless steel dual exhaust muffler and pipe system. The brake master cylinder was rebuilt, Brake hoses were replaced, the brake shoes were replaced, the rear wheel cylinders were rebuilt and the front wheel cylinders were replaced. The taillight housings, bumpers, over-riders, were all restored and rechromed. The painted wire wheels were replaced with 60 spoke chrome wire wheels and 5 new radial 6.00x16 tires for better handling characteristics. The body was painted “British Racing Green” with an expensive base coat/clear coat system. All interior surfaces were also painted with flat black enamel. The seats were rebuilt with new rubber foam and a complete upholstery kit was installed, The selected color was “Biscuit” which is an appropriate color for a British Racing Green car. the kit included new Connolly leather seat covers. Wilton wool carpets, new door panels and a new headliner. The Burl Walnut dash board and all the wood trim was refinished. This car is not a 100 point concours show car, but it is a competitive show car or daily driver. Hagerty lists the value of a concours car of this age and type as $123,000 or an excellent example as $83,000. This car has all the options of an XK140MC except the C-type head. The value of a concours K140MC FHC is $142,000. Our buy it now price for this car is $80,000. It is an exceptional value at that price, It could be upgraded to a 100 point car for less than $5000.
